I moved to Pittsburgh a few months ago and wanted to find a local gym. I've lived in MANY cities…read moreand been a member at MANY gyms, so I know what I want and need. As I researched nearby gyms prior to my move, Altus stood out - they had great reviews online and their philosophy/program offering seemed to align with what I was seeking. John was very responsive to my initial inquiry and after I got settled, I went to meet him for an initial consult. Our conversation gave me full confidence this was the place for me. I love strength training, so I wanted to work with a trainer to get me back into the routine of lifting weights, but I need flexibility - I travel frequently for work and often have to book trips last minute. During our conversation, we talked through everything - my history with strength training, my work and travel schedule, nutrition, injuries, goals, expectations, budget --- it was the most thorough consult I've had with any gym. I also had a preliminary session to determine my baseline (strength, range of motion, etc.) and get all the data measurements, which we use and remeasure to track my progress over time. Now that I've been going to Altus for a few months, I can genuinely say the entire experience - and Altus team - have been amazing. I immediately felt welcome and I appreciate the trainers so much. I've been working with Aaron for my individual sessions and squad sessions and it's been great. He's truly a 'coach' in that we're always talking through each set (about my form, the muscle groups we're focused on, how I'm feeling after each set, why we're doing certain things, etc.) -- it's educational, engaging, and fun. And he's always flexible with my crazy work schedule - accommodating changes when I have to go out of town, providing workouts through the mobile app that I can do virtually when I'm gone, squeezing in sessions when nothing about my availability is 'normal', and checking in regularly between sessions to see how I'm doing. I've also joined several classes and they're always fun - Heather, Cheri, Brandi --they'll kick your butt, but you'll love every minute of it. :) the Versa climber was a new piece of equipment for me --- it's killer but awesome! If you're looking for a gym that will focus on what you need and trainers who will champion you every step of the way to reaching your goals --- head over to Altus. They're the best!

I signed up for a Versa climber 45 minute class (FYI - you can sign up for your first class for free). When I walked up the steps of the studio, I was blown away by the entire gym setup, in addition to the classrooms. They truly have something for everyone! When I signed in for class, I was given a heart monitor to track my workout and taken back to the climber room. The instructor, Cody, was so welcoming and full of energy! I was a little worried since this was my first time taking this type of class, and he made me feel so comfortable and continued to motivate us throughout the entire 45 minutes of class. This workout was HARD, but I felt so good after and would definitely come back to Altus to check out their other options in the future

My training buddy also just moved and I needed another inspiration to help me along. Located in a bright pink building, this box is hard to miss. Walking in, it's a simple and unexpecting gym. Usually people who are intent on starting can email the owner Mike directly from their website, however I personally walked in before one of their WOD [Workout of the Day] sessions and talked to one of the trainers. Tara was great at explaining the process working through the On Ramping sessions [3] before getting going. She's a powerhouse in a small package. Very inspiring. I love that this gym does not uphold the reputation that Crossfit has gathered over the years. True to being one of the first boxes in PA and the country, this box focuses on proper form and safety rather than fiercely competitive pushing and unnecessary injury exposure, which is great. You want to push yourself and keep motivating yourself to get stronger, but keep form instead of doing dumb headstands and not being able to move your neck for a day. [that's happened] Also, it's a fantastic schedule there are several coaches and sessions throughout the day, on Saturday's it's a partner workout at 10:00 am, a totally reasonable time to get there and a lot of encouragement. Great people. I totally recommend.

In my opinion it's a great deal and if you are an early riser like me you need the time in the morning after a good work out. I had been eyeballing this place since we moved here and really just had let Cross fit go because I knew they didn't have any 0500 am classes, plus I hadn't really got into my schedule. I finally decided to give something with them a try. When I reached out I was invited to my first class, I was more than willing to pay, however they will let you try your first class for free I was in love!! Bootcamp is literally everything you would do at CF minus the Olympic lifts. I love Emily, she is super cheerful at 0500 and her WV accent is adorable, Ashley is awesome too:) I do plan on getting into CF, however I think that doing the bootcamp is a great introduction to CF. The work outs will make you sore, and yes they are hard. The classes that I am doing now in my option are Great! The instructors are awesome and truth be told I can't wait to start Crossfit! Friendly owners and a great facility! I will update when I do my first week of Crossfit:)

I AM SO HAPPY I DID. I discussed with Gina my goals of where I wanted to be. I was finally ready to take the jump for myself to get fit. She was respectful and realistic. I have hip and knee problems and she was able to customize a workout that listened to my body while making me feel like I was getting stronger. Thanks to her guidance I am now experiencing less knee and hip pain. Every week I get stronger and the pain is less. I even ran my first 5k which I never thought possible. I have continuously felt my progress. Week by week I am able to do more exercises, increased weight, or able to go from an assisted version to doing it myself. My mind and body feels wonderful. I am being pushed hard, but not too hard that I can't function in normal life and encouraged at the right moments. She asks for feedback on how my body feels. If and where I am sore. Shes an amazing trainer who really listens to you and your bodies needs. In three months I dropped two inches around my entire body. I am starting to see muscle definition. I have new motivation because my sister is getting married in a year, which means I want to be toned and feel confident as the maid of honor. Matt the owner is a great guy, with the addition of Gina, it is a great team. Gina and Matt are great individually and in small groups. I highly recommend this gym and the trainers that work there. This gym changed my life, I hadn't had the same results elsewhere.
