The studio itself was very nice, and our instructor Melissa was very, very positive. How she was able to maintain that level of energy at 7am on a Monday morning is beyond me, but I definitely appreciated her enthusiasm! I don't think barre class itself is for me. I like more active workouts-- running, weights, skiing, biking, boxing-- and barre felt very passive to me. The isometric exercises and tiny movements didn't make me feel like I was truly strengthening anything, and some of the exercises seemed to put a lot of stress on the ankles/hip flexors (although I'm not super flexible, so that may be part of the issue!) I've heard great things about their cardio kickboxing class, Brawl, but according to their website there's a waitlist for all upcoming classes. I'll be keeping an eye on it-- I might have to try it out. read more

I love Amanda's classes! I signed up for her brawl session and was not disappointed. This class was more on the likes of a fitness boot camp. I was sore for a couple of days after that. Barre class with her was also great! I really liked her choreography. Barre session with a different instructor did not feel so great in terms of choreography. The people who work at the studio are friendly. However, the barre room itself may feel like a dungeon until you get used to it. Regardless, I would recommend to give barre code a try! read more

They have classes starting at 6 AM. I can think of nothing better than being able to go to a class and then make it to work on time. The studio is always clean and they provide lockers free of charge to store your belongings in before you make your way down to work out. I enjoy these classes a lot. I mean, no one really likes to work out and if they say that, they are a lying, lying, liar. But the Barre Code allows you to work out in such a fun, motivational environment that it doesn't matter that you are sweating like a pig and shaking like a leaf you are having fun and that is what is good about these workout classes. The music is always newer and makes you want to get up and get moving and the instructors are really great. I love the instructors and their little sayings, "YOU CAN DO ANYTHING FOR 8 SECONDS!" Hell yes I can. Their motivation allows me to sink just one inch lower and hold my pose for 8 more seconds. This work out will leave you sore, but you will feel accomplished for sure. I invite everyone to try Barre Code out, at least once, men included! I am sore the next day and can feel like I accomplished a lot before the day and work even started!! Book a class and see how great you feel afterwards! There are different classes to pick from I recently did the Barre Code class which is: A full-body workout that consists of isometric holds and heavy repetition, working muscles to fatigue to develop muscle stamina and endurance. Different props and routines are used in each class to challenge the body and engage the mind. And boy those props can really get your heart rate going! I want to try Barredio: A choreographed sequence of dance-inspired cardio moves interspersed with strengthening sections for the arms, abs, and glutes. beause tht seems like fun, even if I am totally uncoordinated. There has to be a class that you might like, so try it out! read more

I went to Core Fusion a lot when I lived in New York, so I have a pretty specific idea of what a barre class should be. The class I attended here was okay -- not wonderful, not terrible, really just smack in the middle. For a barre class at a place with "barre" in the name, I would have expected more barre work -- but in the class I attended, we spent maybe 5 minutes out of the hour at the barre. We also barely used our weights -- the class focused mainly on crunches and pushups, which, while they left me sore the next day, didn't really incorporate anything I couldn't have done at home. The space is a bit puzzling, too. Upstairs is bright and airy, but the class is downstairs in a dank and dark basement with mirrors in only half the room. I am glad that the first class was only $8, though. read more

I tried this studio a few times through class pass. i was new to pittsburgh and wanted to see what was around. i liked barre code so much i cancelled CP and just bought the unlimited month here--a great deal at only $89 for your first month! Even when i was just coming through CP I always feel extremely welcomed and encouraged, and sore afterwards, lol. I really like that every class, even if it's the same "theme"--like the regular barre code class or the "burn" class--are totally different. I'm always afraid to join just one studio because i might get bored of the same routines over and over, so i really appreciate how this studio works hard to mix it up and make every class it's own experience!! As a runner, i also like that this studio gives my knees and joints a break and is so gentle in that way while still giving me an INSANELY good workout. read more

Such a great barre studio! I popped by here for the first week unlimited for $7: I'm sometimes a little nervous or cagey about trying out a new place, especially when it's relatively pricey, so this was a great way to check it out. I'll be back! + The classes are great and challenging. Even though barre is low-impact, I love how I walk out of each one feeling stretched. It all comes from the instructors egging you on, calling you out when you're not pushing yourself, and the upbeat tempo that makes you think anything is possible, just until the end of this set. I wish the instructors were more consistently engaged in correcting your form or checking on you -- it really varies depending on the instructor, and I definitely needed that as a relative newbie to barre. I appreciate that there're classes both late in the evening and early (6am, 7am). From the week that I went, the early or late (730pm) classes were much less crowded and more pleasant to stretch out + The studio is clean, well-lit, and the staff & the community are all super friendly and approachable. None of that snooty vibe you sometimes get at boutique studios. I had some issues booking classes using the website and they were happy to help! Generally they aren't contactable when there aren't classes going on, so note that if you're trying to call. Honestly if this were cheaper I'd go regularly without a second thought! read more

Barre Code provides an excellent work out. In an hour you work your entire body and core. Fast, upbeat music and the instructor's motivation fills the room to keep you on track. It's a bit intimidating at first when you aren't familiar with the exercises, but the instructors help you out and correct your form. Don't compete or compare yourself with anyone else but yourself. You'll have a great time and feel really good (but sore) after. The only drawback is the price...it's a tad pricey :/ read more

I wanted to wait until I had formed a solid opinion about Barre Bee before posting a review. Tonight I finished my tenth class and I think now is a good time to talk about my experience so far. By way of some background information, I was introduced to Barre Bee via Groupon. I purchased a 3 class package in December and was surprised that I enjoyed the workout enough to keep coming back to the studio. This was quite unexpected because I succumb to boredom easily; however, boredom hasn't yet been an issue at BBF because every class is different. Here are some of the factors that encourage me to return at least twice a week for hour-long classes. First, the workout itself is great. I'm in pretty good shape, but I leave every class with some soreness. The micro-movements that Barre Bee uses are fantastic. They really target those typical "problem areas" (i.e., triceps and thighs), which is great for me. Second, the instructors are all really nice. I've had classes with three different instructors over the past couple months, and have been impressed at how encouraging they all are. More importantly, they observe everyone during class to ensure that all of the exercises are being performed safely and correctly. Finally, the music is great and I can sing along the entire class. The tunes are upbeat and fun and keep me motivated to work hard. Overall I've been really pleased with my experience and I will continue to go back as long as I'm enjoying myself. read more

Do not let the barre fool you...this stuff is HARD. Get ready to work those long muscles. Parking. If you can't find any in the lot, you'll find some on the next street over. A single class costs $8. There are lockers for your belongings and you don't wear shoes while working out. What? Yes! After checking in at the front desk, you take off your shoes, put your belongings in a locker, and make your way downstairs. The barre room is in the basement. The room has some serious mood lighting (like you're at the fanciest steak dinner), which I appreciated because I looked a fool while I was jumping around. Meredith, instructor and owner, was great. I took an express class (45 mins instead of a 60, I believe) and it stood by it's name-- it went by incredibly fast. Lots of "let's squat and hold it, hold it, now pulse" and my muscles wanted to pop out of my skin and crawl under a bed. Also lots of planking and pushups. It was totally different than my normal workout routine and I enjoyed the change. I'll be stopping by for classes whenever I'm in town. read more

i absolutely love this studio and all of their instructors. I have been coming here for 2 months now and have enjoyed every minute of it. They offer several different types of classes - Barre Code is the typical barre strength training, Burn is Barre in a heated room, HIIT which is mostly cardio, TBC which is a combination of cardio and barre, and Brawl which is kickboxing combined with Barre. All the classes are challenges and the instructors are motivating, encouraging, and kind. They offer classes at great times, whether you are a morning person or evening worker outer. From day one of walking into the Barre Code I couldn't have felt more welcomed and inspired. The studio owner and all the instructors are so sweet, motivating, and make you feel completely at home. Their offerings of classes are totally off the charts. You would be hard pressed not to find a class time to fit into your schedule. 6 AM, noon, 5:30 PM and even 7:30 PM, classes are offered around the clock all throughout the week. They also offer a variety of different Barre classes. The standard Barre Code consists of four sets of strength training - arms, abs, glutes and thighs. Then they have an assortment of cardio Barre classes from a kickboxing style (Brawl) to HIIT, to a heated Barre Code class requiring you to bring a yoga mat (Burn). The music is incredibly motivating, upbeat, and changes monthly, alwaying keeping your interest. The instructors are on the mic for 50 minutes shouting and motivating you like you've never experienced before. They challenge you and push you to your limit each and every class. You feed off the energy of the girls next to you, it truly is such an incredible experience! Aside from the classes being the best offerings of Barre classes I've ever tried, the studio is impeccably clean, and signing up for classes is an absolute breeze. The Mind Body Connect app allows you to sign up for classes about 7 or so days out, which allows for planning and insures you get yourself to the studio. I couldn't be more grateful for this place, the commitment of the instructors to make each class better than the last, and the incredible community of women that choose to come here. I cannot recommend this place enough! They also have an incredible new client special, which is the perfect way to test out all the classes and see how the Barre Code can truly bring so much good to your life. This is by far one of my favorite places. I have tried several work out studios and this is the only one that still has me excited and coming back after several months. THE WORKOUT: Every class is different and often incorporates different props. You will never get bored here or be able to expect what is coming next. It also continues to challenge- I thought that after working out here for a few months it would become a piece of cake. Wrong. I still find myself shaking and pushing my body every class. One of my favorite things about this place, and what makes it different than other barre studios in the area, is that it offers a variety of kinds of classes. I love that for one membership I can get strength focused barre classes as well as cardio ones, too. It really allows you to get a complete workout. THE INSTRUCTORS: These are the nicest girls ever. They are all extremely friendly and wiling to help you. I always seem to be injuring some part of my body (via walking my dog... he loves squirrels :/... or at work.... I'm a nurse, on my feet all day long, lifting heavy patients), and the instructors are extremely helpful. They will tell me about exercise modifications before the class, check on me during the class, and then give me extra tips for stretching/things to do at home after the class. They are very knowledgable, understanding, and motivating. THE PLACE: It's quite adorable. Bright colors, cute workout apparel for sale (I have my eye on an awesome tank and sweatshirt now), and an even cuter pup to greet you! The parking lot is small, which drives me crazy sometimes, but then when you realize that most of the workout places in Shadyside don't have a parking lot at all, it puts it into perspective. Plus, I never have trouble finding a spot a street over if I can't get one in the lot. YOUR BODY: This is probably the best part. I'm extremely proud of the change in my body, and love when other people notice too. My arms are really getting toned and look great- but I really love how STRONG I feel. Alright let me be 100% honest here -- I HATE working out. Despise it. Loathe it. I'm still waiting on that weight loss miracle that lets me get toned and taut while laying on my couch. In the meantime, I've tried a variety of workout classes to hold my interest but nothing has really stuck with me... Until now. I always thought the barre studios had some cute clothes with fun sayings on them, but after taking two classes at The Barre Code, I see what those mottos are all about! You will shake. You will push yourself. You will feel it for a day or two (or three) after, but you will love it. So far at The Barre Code Shadyside I've taken classes with Claire and Meredith. I love the variety of classes this studio offers and the schedule works perfectly for a working woman like myself. I have only taken the original Barre Code classes so far, and they have incorporated sets of light weights, ankle weights, and a "loop" resistance band. This will vary depending on your instructor and which class you're taking. When you head down to the studio, take a look at the front of the room where there's usually a clipboard and the props the instructor is using for that class. You can then retrieve your own from the prop room and prepare to work. it. out. There will be points in the class where you push yourself beyond what you've ever thought possible, but you will be glad that you did. The instructors are fun and upbeat and there is a great soundtrack playing throughout the warm-up, workout, and cool down. The 50 minute class flies by in no time! I can't wait to get back here for my next class. I noticed little changes in my butt (or "seat" as they call it!), abs, and arms after just one class. Pros: Nice sunny lobby and cute dog Nice person at desk OK workout Maybe it means more people are getting in shape? Cons: Workout studio is in a dark grey basement. Why they didn't put it in the sunny upstairs space is puzzling. I tried the Barre Interval class. The teacher shouted loudly into her microphone which was already turned way up the entire time, while throbbing loud exercise/rave music played. She spent more time looking at herself in the mirror than actually helping anyone in the class, with the exception of berating us with the standard "Keep it up ladies!" It was a fair class but not so different than any step aerobics class minus the step. No one seemed to be enjoying it, no smiles. All that said, a regular Barre class might have been better. Having initially tried Barre Method in San Francisco, I was shocked to find that the places in Pgh more expensive even than there. I liked going to a place where the instructors seemed to care a little bit about instruction and where it was a bright welcoming studio. Alas I'll try Pure Barre next, but I still can't understand the crazy prices. read more

This was my second trip to the Barre Code...as I'm a little bit of an exercise junkie...variety is key and a challenging workout is my constant motivation. I have only taken two Barre classes in my life, and both have been here at Barre Code. I've chosen the Community classes because well...I think the cost of personal fitness shouldn't be the same as my copay at physician's office. Both workouts were high energy and calorie burning! I took TBC and Brawl, and while my coordination from my kickboxing days has definitely subsided, I still loved it and viewed it as something to grow on. There is a lot of repetition in both classes, and I definitely needed and appreciated the repetitive movements in Brawl, as a first timer. I was a little disappointed when the goal of the next sequence was to eliminate "mistakes." but she was so nice that I'm sure it wasn't the intended message. After all...isn't the goal to get people up and active...there can be no mistake in that! Now for some quick facts: It's freezing in the room in the beginning so layer up...you'll be a sweaty mess in no time. :) You wear socks, on a padded floor, and there is a lot (A LOT) of hopping, bouncing, jumping, running in place etc. So if you have any issues with ankle stability, or balance, I wouldn't avoid it, but I'd be cautious and I'd let an instructor know so they can hopefully provide modifications. Some classes are fast paced and you may seem lost...but the repetition helps so don't give up! It's a great workout! Lastly...realize that this is a trend...and with most trends and small boutique fitness centers, people naturally form friendships and "groups" quickly. It can be intimidating walking into a center for the first (or even second) time and realizing that the other five people in the room all know each other...and after the obligatory "hi" you're kind of on your own. As a frequenter of many gyms, crossfit boxes, spin studios, yoga studios, and other boutique fitness facilities, I will say that making new clients feel welcome and less awkward unfortunately seems to be a strength for more men than women. I found that to be true here at TBC as well. I hope in future visits, if I see a newbie or anyone who looks a little lost like I did, that the women who run the show aim to empower and motivate every single client who walks through the door...so that we are all as excited to come back as if we were friends. read more

Fun, challenging workout! Every summer I try something new for exercise (rowing team, hip hop dance class, etc). This is the summer of barre. I'm two classes in and it's great! So far, I've taken Erin and Vanessa's classes! Excellent instructors! Motivating while not berating. Both instructors offers advanced options as well as modifications. In addition, there routines were very different which will keep it interesting. The studio is lovely and clean. The barre studio is in the basement but it's very clean and doesn't smell like a basement at all! Honestly, I'm ok with the public not seeing my face o pain :). read more

I recently revisited this studio, it had been a few years since I had been. I took some classes around the time they first opened, and decided to check them out again because I'd hit a plateau with my current workout routine. It had been years since I had been here, so a lot of the workouts had really changed. Don't expect tons and tons of barre work only, similar to Pure Barre. Most classes here combine HIIT or cardio sessions with barre and strength. All of the classes are HARD. I workout regularly, and I consider myself to be in pretty good shape, and there were times where I was literally mad at the instructor because class was SO HARD, haha. Expect to be pretty sore after your first class or 2 as well. Even though the workouts were hard, I always felt like I got a great workout after class was over. I liked the combination of cardio with strength, I need both to stay toned. I had a month unlimited pass, so I took all of the classes I could for that month. The standard Barre class is barre work, strength, and you are usually using weights, bands, or have ankle weights on. I regularly do strength training and I still found this hard. There were times during my first couple of classes that I felt like the beginners should have been told the weights could be optional, because I was really struggling to keep my form and complete some of the exercises with the weights. The next class I took was Brawl, this class is a kick-boxing style cardio workout. You really move in this class and there aren't really any breaks. I found this class to be pretty good cardio, however I found it a little boring. There are a couple other classes that include cardio, HIIT and TBC. HIIT was HARD. I hated it, however I forced myself to continue to take it because I knew it was a great workout. I preferred TBC over the HIIT class because it felt less intense to me, however it didn't seem to be offered as much as a class whenever I was able to schedule one, so I only took it once or twice. There used to be a Barre-dio class that I enjoyed that incorporated dance, however it looks like that is no longer an option. To break it down here are some of the pros and cons I found: Pros: - Lots of class times, friendly staff - Free parking, although the lot is very tiny and hard to get through at times - 50 min workout is a tiny bit easier to fit into your day than 60 - Cardio combined with strength will get you better results - All classes were challenging - Variety of classes are good, I was able to take a different class each day - You will work until your muscles are fatigued - I didn't always absolutely need a shower after the Barre classes - There's lockers and changing rooms available - Classes are fast paced, so class FLYS by Cons: - Some of the classes felt TOO hard for beginners, not any or many modifications given - Not many instructors gave adjustments on form - For some reason there were times when my feet would cramp during cardio sessions and there was not a lot I could do about it. I don't usually have issues with this, so unsure why it happened. Maybe too much jumping on tip toes? - There needs to be WAY more stretching at the end. There's about 2 - 3 min of stretching, which never felt like enough. Instructors gave you the option of stretching after class on your own, but there is only 10 min between classes - Instructors often said things like "last set" or "last one" when that was NOT true! haha - Equipment isn't cleaned in between classes - Most women who come here are already in really good shape, so could be intimidating to some - A little pricey at $18 a class, I can't afford to go regularly read more

I attended regularly & loved it! I recently moved out of Pittsburgh and haven't found anything to compare to the full body strength & cardio routine the barre code offers. In 50 minutes you get an intense workout worth every penny. Each class is different, so try out a few before you decide whether you like it or not. I think interval & TBC are the most challenging classes. Every instructor has a very unique style, so be sure to try different instructors. Be prepared for loud music & instructors counting down every move. In any of Shannon's classes you will work every second you're there & she will be working just as intensely right along with you. I have been to this studio over 50 times and have taken all of the different classes they offer. The entire staff is friendly from the front desk to the instructors, and they continually change the routines which makes it interesting. The instructors are all well trained as they walk around to ensure all participants are using the right form so they don't get hurt. The workout space is in the basement - it's a nice clean space and it's perfect for what we are doing. They utilize different pieces of equipment which makes it interesting and mixes it up a bit on your muscles. I always leave with a little pain (the good kind!) As I've been doing the workout I can see a noticeable difference in my body, so their classes really do make a difference!! I have had a lot of friends and colleagues comment that I look very toned all over. Another final comment is that I think that the owner does a very nice job running this business - if there is ever an issue she and her staff take care of it professionally and go above and beyond. I was at a class where an instructor was late - like 5 minutes...we took the class then they proceeded to refund the entire cost of the class. That was unexpected and appreciated!! read more

I love BBF! The workouts are great, they are always changing. Every time you go in for class there is a new sequence or a different prop to use. The staff is friendly and warm, always welcoming. The location is great in Shadyside. There is plenty of parking around the area. It's a short walk to Walnut Street to get errands done before and after class. I've been going to Barre Bee Fit Pittsburgh since they opened and I'm completely addicted. I've tried other barre studios in Pittsburgh and found the classes to be extremely repetitive and, frankly, boring. I would leave those classes and would still feel like I needed to go running to get a real workout - that is not the case at BBF! I sweat my butt off in every single classes. All of the instructors are motivating and encouraging. Although I don't think the classes have gotten easier, I do feel like I've gotten much stronger and better at the workouts. read more
