Quarter chicken with Yuca Fries
Kenny N.

Since moving to NC, I've seen several Alpaca locations and have been curious about the Peruvian Rotisserie Chickens. I stopped by one day for lunch and got their quarter chicken meal which comes with a quarter of a chicken (choice of dark or white meat) and two sides. I ended up getting fries and their yuca fries to compare. The yuca fries were an additional 50 cent upgrade, but definitely worthwhile. If I had to describe yuca fries, it would be a fluffy, almost golden potato fry texture. For the price I paid, I thought it was very reasonable for a generous portion. Be sure to grab the green and yellow sauce. The yellow sauce is almost like a tangy mayonnaise, while the green sauce reminds me of a very spicy aguacate sauce. Both pair really well when drizzled on the chicken. Pros: Fast, friendly service. Reasonable prices. Cons: Parking lot gets really dark at night since the area is not well-lit. But with plenty of open spots, there shouldn't be any issues finding parking.

"The rice and beans is super super good" - my 9 year old. Alpaca is one of the few spots in Chapel Hill where everyone gets a meal that they are happy with, including my super picky kid. My go to is always the dark meat chicken with black beans and green beans. And it's absolutely worth it to pay for an extra side of tostones for everyone to share. Everything is fresh but also feels like an indulgence.

Super good! The staff here is SO kind, so friendly. My main complaint is the portion size- especially for the chicken! The piece of chicken I got with my chicken plate (dark meat) was very very small, especially since about half of it was bone! The food itself was very good, the chicken came right off the bone, the green beans had a good sauce on top of them and the plantains were really good! I placed my order on the app and it was ready within 10 minutes. They have a good amount of seating inside, but I seemed most popular to order ahead and pick up or order to-go. I first really heard about this place through their sponsorship with UNC athletics, so wanted to give them a try, and I would definitely go back- just would see options for more chicken, etc!

Alpaca's chicken is delicious! We got yucca fries and plantains for sides- all freshly made! The yellow sauce and green sauce are also both well made, lighter than some of the other sauces I've had but still flavourful nonetheless. The restaurant setup and pricing is similar to a chipotle/cava (quick instant service) but with more emphasis on the chicken. Restaurant ambience is also very fun and artistic! Will definitely go here again.

My family got takeout from Alpaca and it exceeded my expectations! I got a quarter chicken and for the sides i got coleslaw and fries. The chicken was so juicy and flavorful and not dry at all. Everything was very reasonably priced with great portion sizes. I will definitely be back if i'm in the area and I would recommend it!

Easy to order and quick to arrive, good for a convenient and fairly tasty meal. At $30, it's a little hard to justify though especially when it gets you a single leg quarter and some fried rice. The chicken is tasty and cooked right but I could do with a lot more smoke. The rice was the standout. I didn't know I liked my rice Smokey but now I know. We sat outside on this nice day and although it's just a strip mall, it's nice to have the option for outdoor dining.

This place is always consistent and delish! The chicken is moist and soft. It's never chewy or dry. I really like the side of green beans and tostones. They really have subtle flavors that I enjoy. The black beans and rice are cooked well and they have are seasoned just right.

Delicious peruvian chicken here! I got sweet plantains and yuca fries for my sides - the plantains were nicely caramelized and tender, and fries crisp with a soft center. The green and yellow sauce were yummy, and are self-serve so you can get as much as you like!

Really good food. Really worth the money. Employees were nice ok letting us have to go containers and separating the bean and rice (I don't like my beans mixing and I was sharing with my mom). Overall clean and welcoming would come again and cute little alpaca there you can take a pic with.

Came here with some friends and I'm always a fan of Alpaca since the food is always very fresh, delicious, and service is outstanding. This is my third time here and always look forward to it. Food came out promptly and did not disappoint! This is a great restaurant in the area. Would come again.

Lenoir Dining Hall

Amazing food, nice workers, store is always very clean! They also have a spot in the bottom of Lenoir dining hall and it's the best food on campus @ UNC! The green sauce is to die for and I love their green beans

Alpaca is always consistent with quality and flavor! The chaufa was solid and the lomo was over the top. I also enjoyed the Chi cha! The tostones have such a good seasoning and I recommend getting the Large portion which comes with 10. This was perfect for three of us. I loved the ample patio seating but the inside was the most beautifully decorated Alpaca I've been to in the area. Great job, Alpaca team - keep it up!

I think I liked the chicken a little bit more, but both of them were very good and the plantains were also very good. Not overly sweet, but also not super dry. I will say the parking is kind of annoying without parking space directly nearby. Had to park in the parking garage across the street. The server was very nice and mindful of waters and when we needed things. I will say almost $20 for a regular dish seemed very expensive but the food was pretty good so I would probably come back - just for the cheaper empanadas as they were pretty filling as it was. The one thing that kind of threw me off was how they set the table with their water cups upside down, touching the table. I wouldn't say that I'm a clean freak, but also that seems kind of gross to me because that's where my mouth is going to be... I'd probably do something different there myself. This definitely is more of a Chapel Hill / Carrboro money type of dining experience $$ but I'd be back on nicer occasions. The pastry on the empanadas were very good. Really liked the yuca Frits as well

Came here after the Durham Farmers Market with a friend and wow this place was a surprise. …read more I went with the grain bowl and honestly it is one of the best I have had in downtown Durham. It is built on quinoa and rice with black beans and kale, then layered with corn salsa, tomato cortido, guacamole, and a creamy acevichado style sauce that pulls everything together. It is finished with a crunchy mix of pepitas, nuts, and grains. The balance is quite ideal in my view. My friend had the rotisserie chicken with two sides, kale and slaw, and it was just as impressive. Crispy skin, juicy inside, and really clean flavors. Simple food done right and GF friendly. Everything felt thoughtfully prepared. Prices land right where you would expect for the quality, roughly 16 to 21 dollars depending on what you order, and it feels worth it. My bowl plus side of dark chicken was plenty. A few notes. Parking is what you would expect for downtown, so plan accordingly. Service was solid and friendly, but nothing that stood out. The vibe inside is festive and relaxed, bright and open, and just a fun place to hang out for lunch. Porbably not a special occasion. I also suspect it could get loud when full. This is definitely going into my regular rotation. That grain bowl is going to be hard to pass up next time, so instead of replacing it I will probably just add a side or an empanada and start working my way through the rest of the menu.

The SERVICE was horrible. Guy behind counter told me the soda machine only had diet soda, which was what I wanted anyway. Out of curiosity I asked if it was hospital policy to exclude sugar soda or if the machine was just out of sugar syrups. He responded "don't know" in a "don't care" attitude. I was in town for business and as in every location I travel to, I look for Peruvian food. This is in my top three. One was in Austin, TX, one in St Louis, MO and now this one in Durham, NC. I had the lunch special. It included a drink, soup and entree. Of course you have to drink Inca Cola (tastes like Squirt with Cream Soda) nice and cold. I'll have to get a Chicha Morada to take with me (which I did, and it was fruity and sweet, like a non-alcoholic sangria with cinnamon). The soup was a chicken and lentil soup with various veggies. As soon as I tasted it, I knew I was in for a treat and prayed the Aji de Gallina would be just as good. It was! Aji de Gallina is a shredded chicken dish made with Peruvian Aji amarillos, nuts, Parmesan cheese. Add in all the delicious spices Peru is known for and you have a wonderful, homey, delicious dish. I will be coming back tonight for dinner. Can't decide if I want the Seco de Res or the Lomo Saltado. Both staple dishes in Peru. Part 2 - so...I was too tired to go back for dinner. BUT, I did order in. I got the Papa à la Huancaina (so delicious, it tasted like I make at home). It is a creamy, Aji Amarillo cheese sauce over yellow potatoes. I would have liked it a little spicier, but I understand having to cater to the general public, so I'll let that slide. But the flavor was as good as you could get. I also opted to order the Seco since I thought it would travel better than the Lomo Saltado. The rice was perfect. Not soggy or spongy. Just right. Flavored with a little salt and garlic. You could eat it by itself. The Seco meat was tender. I didn't even use a knife to cut it. In fact, it pulled apart easily with a plastic fork. I would have liked a little more of the cilantro sauce to soak up in my rice. The flavors were right on, but I love cilantro...so. It even came with a Salsa Criolla (lightly pickled red onion), which is authentic and served with many Peruvian dishes. I ordered additional salsa amarillo just to taste. It's a sauce made with aji amarillo and black mint. I know it sounds weird but it's actually so tasty and fresh. My only disappointment were the beans not that they weren't good and flavorful, but they were pinto beans. I was really expecting mayacoba beans (similar to a white canary bean). Sorry, I ate it before thinking about taking pictures. All in all, I would rate this highly for those wanting to try authentic Peruvian food. My next visit to Durham I'll be trying the Ceviche and Lomo Saltado.

I went to Makus in New Hope Commons, Durham in a Tuesday afternoon, and when I entered its lackluster ambiance with cheap-looking uncomfortable high chairs, I was surprised that there's not a single employee in the front. I saw about 2 of them in the back, seemingly preparing the empanadas. I was ready to order but no one was there to accept my order. I almost left Makus until I saw the bell on the concession with a notice saying, "NEED HELP? RING ME PLEASE!" I rang the bell once, no one came; I rang twice, finally, an employee! I ordered 2 beef empanadas & 1 ham & cheese empanada for a total of almost $13. There was only 1 customer before me, waiting for her order when I went. While I was waiting, the employee who was smoking earlier outside came in and just ignored me as he returned back to work in the back. At around 15 min. mark of waiting, an employee went to the front, holding a plastic with a small takeout box inside. I stood up and asked if my order was ready, the woman just nodded without saying a word, just cold and expressionless. Finally, after about 20 minutes of waiting just for 3 empanadas, the same woman handed me the plastic with my order. I thought they were busy preparing empanadas in the back. Why'd it take so long just to get 3 empanadas ready? Out of all the empanadas my girl & I have tried: Filipino-style, Ilocos-style & El Salvadorian style in the Sabor restaurant nearby, the empanadas in Makus are the smallest. Each empanada cost about $4 (a dozen for $47 - seriously, who would buy a dozen of these?). I'd be fine with this size if the empanadas are gourmet quality with astonishing fillings and flavors, but the taste was alright - nothing special, and definitely not worth $4 in our book. The good part was that the empanadas were not doughy, so the texture was fine. The sauce that came with it was alright, and the 1 small cup is just fine for 3 tiny empanadas. When I came home to eat the 3 empanadas with my girl, she asked me why I returned to Makus after we were disappointed in our first visit a few years ago. I said that I wanted to give it another chance. Now, I deeply regret this decision. | Overall Score: 1.2/5

The Deets: I've had the chance to enjoy meals from a few of the NC Triangle locations of Makus Empanadas. With this Durham location, I mainly utilize delivery to enjoy their empanadas lately. Even with them not being just around the corner from me, they arrive fairly warm and withstand the trip well. One of the draws for me in getting Makus Empanadas are they appear to be baked and not fried (don't get me wrong, I like fried empanadas as well!) and honestly they remind me of mini-versions of my grandmother's homemade fruit turnovers in appearance (a good thing). I usually order these light pockets of tasty goodness with their chicken filling or their sweet corn filling version. I find both pretty good, they hit the spot with chicken giving flavorful and needed protein with not being overly spicy while the sweet corn version being a delicious but not so heavy choice. They even identify which are each variety by initials baked in at the edge of the crust, pretty cool and no guessing. I am a fan and I will continue to keep this location of Makus Empanadas in my delivery meal rotation.
