But, as often happens when you only have eyes for the worst of places, authentic little gems pop up to remind you that the world is pretty good indeed. Rag Doll hides in the back of a hideous multi-unit commercial shack, but it asserts itself with faux-finished walls in light colors, trendy hanging bars full of their own in-house designs, and funky accessories. It's owned and run by two local young women (emphasis on the young) who do really great unique screenprinted designs on soft, wearable American Apparel shirts, skirts, sweats and dresses. The designs are whimsical; a dandelion blowing petals across the shirt, or a jellyfish hiding on a hem. They also carry wallets and accessories by Espe, a Canadian brand, and locally-made jewelry. The store shows a discerning eye for style with a distinct local identity; it's a little oasis of fashion in the most gauche of surroundings.

My first visit to Juneau with my husband. We woke up early and walked around town before most stores opened and I saw the stunning clothes in their window. I had to go back when they were open and it was a tough decision to only buy 2 items. I purchased a lovely scarf and a knit poncho. They were not cheap but if I had attempted to knit these myself I could not have bought the yarn for the price of the garments. I can't wait to wear them! read more

Alpaca International was a highlight during our visit to Juneau. My mom, my sister, and I purchased beautiful alpaca scarves to commemorate our trip together. Everyone there was warm, friendly, and helpful. They picked out the perfect scarf for each of us and we have been wearing them every day on our journey. The sole of the shoe is not even rubber, so I imagine they are going to wear down pretty quickly. I try not to wear them in the rain too, because they are not slip resistant. However, they will definitely keep your toes warm! Wish they had a more diverse online shop, apparently they only sell and ship their rugs online. I was on a cruiseship and am also considering contacting the cruise ship company to lodge a complaint about Mt. Juneau Trading Company's business practices. I seek a refund or replacement. My calls are NO LONGER being answered. I expressed concern when I purchased the statue, about it breaking during shipping and KYLE TRIPP assured me it would arrive unbroken. Immediately across from giant, multi-story cruise ships is a street with a lot of businesses, and there was a luggage shop. Oren showed us a number of pieces of luggage trying to meet the criteria we laid out for him. He was successful, finding us a rolling ruffle, with lower and upper storage areas. Perfect. If you find a need for luggage, this is the place in Juneau. And we later found out that it was less expensive than others we later discovered. Thanks, Oren. And they have an enormous, beautiful, full black lab - massif mix who is gentle and friendly. Give him a hug from us.
