Juneau is generally sort of cheesy and sprawling and uninviting, and what they do have left of a gold rush heritage they've mostly denigrated with touristy jewelry stores and bad renovations.
But, as often happens when you only have eyes for the worst of places, authentic little gems pop up to remind you that the world is pretty good indeed.
Rag Doll hides in the back of a hideous multi-unit commercial shack, but it asserts itself with faux-finished walls in light colors, trendy hanging bars full of their own in-house designs, and funky accessories. It's owned and run by two local young women (emphasis on the young) who do really great unique screenprinted designs on soft, wearable American Apparel shirts, skirts, sweats and dresses. The designs are whimsical; a dandelion blowing petals across the shirt, or a jellyfish hiding on a hem. They also carry wallets and accessories by Espe, a Canadian brand, and locally-made jewelry.
The store shows a discerning eye for style with a distinct local identity; it's a little oasis of fashion in the most gauche of surroundings. read more
