Our tour guide, Marni was not in the best of moods. She was annoyed at the riders who couldn't keep up with her pace. The bikes were not in good shape. Front derailleur, headset, back brakes and crank arms were barely functional. My nephew's grip fell off during the ride. These bikes have not been maintained at all. For the amount of money you spend for the tour, I'd expect a better functioning bike. The tour was nice. Great views of the area. What can I say! They gave us super easy directions and following them was super easy. I know the reviews say there is a big hill but there really isn't. I was super worried about this hill after reading the reviews and let me tell you that the hill wasn't even worth mentioning. But if you are new to bike riding then please understand this a really small hill but for the average bike rider this really isn't even a hill at all. Just saying. They followed us the entire time and made sure we were safe at all times. My only complaint would be to have more time at the visitor center to explore more. We saw both visuals but were very lucky since we are both very fit. If we weren't then we would have definite problems for not having enough time to actually explore things. More time would definitely fix this situation. The brewery part of this tour is including Alaskan Brewing Company. Just in case anybody who is wanting to experience other breweries this isn't your tour. Just one and one only brewery. They could definitely improve this process by including other Alaskan Breweries. Did a tour through the cruise company carnival on June 4 wasn't sure what to expect as this was the first tour we did through the ship. Cycle Alaska does the tours and damn I'm impressed. It was organized very cleanly with all of us meeting at the pier and getting into one of two vans with trailers full of bikes. Along the way to the bike destination Dan and David we're extremely knowledgeable about the area and showcasing the highlights of Juneau with their own experiences of the area. During the tour the Dan and David explained the area and I thought I was in a history class on a bike. Enjoyed every moment of it. Weston was following us to ensure our safety and looked after us as we were busy learning. Good job to the team. At the end of the tour we got to wind down with a beer flight tasting which is great! They had allot of energy, patience and really loved giving these tours. The tour itself was beautiful with well maintained equipment and good instruction. Absolutely amazing shop and owner John. I rented a full suspension mtb for the day while I was off the ship from my cruise. The shop is within a 10 minute walk from the Port. Once I arrived we took around 30 minutes (my preference) to setup the bike to my specs. To my surprise and delight the bike was in good working order mechanically. Off the Princess cruise ship, Kait and I enjoyed the whole process from booking ahead to gently finding our way down the hill (s) to the final lake inlet. Cycle Alaska does bicycle sales, rentals, and repairs; however, I want to address their tours. My wife and I booked their Bike and Brew tour through our cruise company (Celebrity) for our shore excursion in Juneau. We were enticed by the idea of a healthy bike ride to see some breathtaking scenery, followed by some well-earned local beer. With one relatively minor exception, we were not disappointed. Check out the Cycle Alaska website for a detailed description of the tour, where it goes and what you will see. Basically it starts at Auke Lake and partially circumnavigates Mendenhall Lake, giving you two spectacular stops to view the Mendenhall Glacier as well as a final leg through a very pretty section of mossy old-growth forest. (My wife referred to this as the "Ewok village" portion of the tour, but of course those Episode VI scenes were filmed in Humboldt County, California redwood forests, not southeastern Alaskan spruce and hemlock forests.) Our guides were effective and fun, shading pretty far towards the laid-back, almost the slacker end of the spectrum; but they knew their stuff, and I was not disappointed by the "lecture" portions of the tour. We learned a lot about the glacier and the forest, as well as some civic and cultural tidbits pertaining to Juneau. Our tour was staffed by Joe, Nick, Sara, and a taller guy with a beard whose name I didn't catch. They made sure to stress safety during the opening briefing and even handed out rubber bands to anyone with a loose pantleg. The equipment was pretty decent for rentals. My bicycle gave a weird little trumpety sound when I braked, but it operated just fine. We all got helmets and bikes, of course, but they also provided unlimited bottled water, as well as snacks (e.g. granola bars) and hot drinks (e.g. hot cider and hot cocoa) at our midpoint stop. My only complaint is that the biking portions were too easy. My wife and I were hoping for a good workout but this tour seems aimed at a broader audience who might not be able to handle a strenuous ride. The Activity Level on the site is listed as "Moderate" and in retrospect I suppose that is fair. The total distance was officially given as 8.5 miles, so working backwards from that figure, I would estimate the four legs at about 1, 3, 3, and 1.5 miles, executed over about a 2.5-hour period with a long break at the second stop. And the riding pace was sometimes painfully slow. But don't get me wrong--the ease of the ride did not at all detract from our enjoyment of the tour; it's just that we were hoping for some good exercise as a side benefit. The beer tasting portion was just as good. The tour wrapped up back in town at the Hangar, a bar-and-grill-type place in Merchant's Wharf. The tasting was comprised of three Alaskan Brewing beers plus another from Northern Lights Brewing Company. The pours were generous (8 ounces I think) and the narration was very interesting and highly informative. Over the course of the trip, I had come to love the Alaskan Brewing beers and enjoyed hearing about their history. The man leading the tasting was possibly from the brewery because he said "us" and "we" a few times; if that is the case, I am even more impressed. All in all, this was a home run among our excursion choices. I highly recommend this tour to anyone looking for a full afternoon of fantastic sight-seeing and great local beer. And a little exercise as a bonus. read more

I booked the bike and brew tour with Cycle Alaska through the cruise I was on- and this ended up being one of my favorite shore excursions during the cruise. The guides were friendly, good natured and knowledgeable in history, nature and of course beer. While the tour was categorized as being somewhat physically challenging- it was not demanding at all. From the pics, I thought there'd be more trail riding- but most of it ended up being on flat, paved roads. There were a couple of small hills and one stretch on an unpaved trail in a forest- definitely my favorite part. The tour takes you to a couple of spots with good views/photo opps of the Mendenhall Glacier. You're also given a bit of free time (and a snack) at the Glacier. For the last portion, the tour crew brought us back to "downtown" Juneau and to the Hanger, a former flight deck turned bar. The bartender poured us a pretty generous flight of 4 different brews- an Alaskan Amber, an Alaskan brewing co Belgian white ale, a Denali brewing co kolsch and an IPA from another local brew comp that now escapes me. I took a particular liking to the Alaskan Amber and the Denali kolsch. Perfect after a bit of riding. Would definitely recommend the tour for anyone looking for something a bit more on the active side, includes good views of the glacier and involves local brews. read more

Our cruise ship was delayed by 8 hours giving us only 2 hours to enjoy Juneau. We had originally reserved a tandem planning to take our time around the city and to the glacier, but opted for two electrics instead given the time constraint. Jon was very nice to provide the upgrade to electrics for free given our cruise ship inconveniences. The bikes were great, but we underestimated our strength and found ourselves likely arriving back late to the cruise at our pace, so we frantically called Jon. Without hesitation, he picked us up and called the cruise agent to inform them of our possible late arrival. We were able to reach the cruise ship in time thanks to him! We did a bike trip with Cycle Alaska during a shore excursion on our Alaska cruise. I must say that the staff is friendliest on Earth. Super nice people and very knowledgable about the area. We did a bike ride to Mendenhall glacier and then stopped at a brewery to sample the delightful Alaskan beers. My only complaint is that they should keep their bikes in better repair. My wife's bike was missing the stripe on that back tire and by the end of the ride during a slightly wet and muddy day she had so much mud on her back you could have mistaken her for a mud wrestler. Guys please install a wheel cover on your bikes!!! All in all we had a fun trip, and not a bad deal for $85, but if they are going to charge this much for a tour, get the equipment in decent shape please. read more

My group rented 6 regular bikes, a tandem bike, and a baby trailer from Cycle Alaska when we were in Juneau. We booked ahead of time online, and they were ready for us before regular business hours, since our cruise ship came into port early. The bike size I wanted wasn't available online, but they had the right size in store and let me switch. They provided our party with maps, water, and snacks. They suggested a great ride into the neighboring island called Douglas. We rode up to an abandoned mine, ending up at Sandy Beach. This was an awesome recommendation. The beach was gorgeous and we spent a while exploring. The bikes were in excellent condition and we didn't have any mechanical issues. When we returned the bikes, the owner offered us a ride back into town! If you are coming in from a cruise ship, be advised that Cycle Alaska is a 20 minute walk from where the shuttles drop off passengers. It's definitely worth the walk, especially if you can snag a ride back from their above-and-beyond helpful staff. read more

Our dogsledding/glacier/helicopter excursion was cancelled due to weather and luckily we had looked into Cycle Alaska as a backup plan. Our guide was Fletcher and Andre drove the van - for a young guy, Fletcher was AWESOME! Pleasant, engaging, informative, and friendly. (andre was the much quieter of the two). He led the group at a comfortable pace. They drive you out in the van to the starting point and then your biking journey begins. I will say, the first 10 minutes of the bike ride are the WORST - pretty steep hill, you begin to wonder if you made a big mistake booking it. No worries, it's all good from there and a TOTALLY manageable ride. If it's even slightly rainy, take them up on the offer for the waterproof pants/coat, since there's no fenders on the bike and there's a LOT of splashback up your rear and back!! They also provide helmets (bring a Lysol wipe if you're worried about the moist strap! Could be rain/humidity.... could be sweat... who knows!) It was amazing to ride through Juneau, into the forest path, and then when you pop out, holy COW, there's a glacier! They then take you around to the other side of the glacier and you can visit the Visitor's Center for Mendenhall Glacier, but it's a **VERY** quick stop. You don't get much time at all. We did the Bike and Brew excursion through Holland America... the biking part was great, the "brew" portion took a longgggg time b/c our server was also serving tons of other dining tables in the restaurant and there were huge pauses in between each pitcher of beer. We ended up having to leave before samplin them all in order to make it to our 7:45pm dining time on the ship! :( [also, the beer isn't brewed on location, FYI.] read more

Traveled to Juneau via Cruise ship and signed up for this as an excursion. It was THE best tour. We had gorgeous weather, the route both road and trail were beautifully scenic and awesome. Loved the little bit of hiking to get to the lake and a chance to get closer to the glacier at the park! Perfectly what I needed to work off all the extra treats on board!
