This is a very quaint little soap shop that only sells silt soap. Most of the soap bars are 15 dollars so for a nice little unique gift that is made locally in Juneau it's not a bad choice. The shop keeper was incredibly nice and knowledgeable about the soap and its unique properties. Although most of the soaps have added fragrance, they have the soap without any fragrances if you have a sensitivity to the additives. Overall it is worth a stop as it is very small and it does not take too much time to explore. read more

Over our stop this August on a cruise to Alaska, we came across the Glacier Smoothie Soap shop. The owner was very friendly and she explained us the process of making the soaps. I ended up buying the "Pioneer" bar of soap. Now that I have finished using this bar of soap, my conclusion is that it was an over hyped $13.60 (including taxes) bar of soap that lasted maybe 10 showers. I feel that this is one of those things that tourists (including myself) get because it has the word "Glacier" in it from a cutesy looking shop. The truth is that none of the locals (I talked to several) actually use it. Also, I can honestly say that I did not feel that my skin was any better than using a regular bar of Dove soap. Glacier silt on your skin sounds wonderful but if a blind testing was done, I would be able to tell the difference. Do yourself a favor and buy a goat milk soap bar instead for 1/3 the price if you're feeling schmancy. I have nothing against the concept and I fully support small businesses. My review is just on the product, the price point, and its effectiveness. read more

I found this place while roaming around Juneau on a cruise 6 years ago. Because it "smelled nice", I bought the Serious Silt Scrub for my feet. I hike a lot, have calluses, and am endlessly barefoot in the summer, which means my feet are a disaster. Rough, smelly, heels that damn near slice my sheets in half, you get the idea. The Serious Silt Scrub is astonishing. It is hands down the best foot scrub I've ever come across. It has a light peppermint smell and it leaves my heels soft and supple like a baby's bottom and with virtually no smell! I live down in CA, and have purchased foot scrubs on and off for more than 30 years and I'm not exaggerating to say nothing compares to this product. NOTHING. Buy the Serious Silt Scrub. Pay the shipping. You don't use a lot, so it does last. It's an awesome gift for gardeners, hikers or other people with disaster feet. And you will love your feet once again. Let's face it; the shack is adorable. As our shuttle to Mendenhall drove past, I spied the Glacier Silt Soap store sitting all picturesque on the corner. THUMP! That was me whacking my long-suffering husband on the arm. "We're SO going there!" Despite not being a girly girl at all, I'm a sucker for artisan and unusual soap, and soap that lives in its own dollhouse makes me just squee and fall over like a short-legged bunny. Alas, a late arrival in port coupled with the worst debarkation system I've ever experienced on a cruise ship (reason #7 not to book Norwegian for Alaska) meant that time slipped away in Juneau faster than we'd planned, and so we found ourselves on the doorstep of this twee soap paradise about three minutes before closing time. Not a problem. The two ladies within were welcoming and reassured us not to hurry. The charm stayed on even when my husband refused to look at the "manly" soaps and went all Aussie on us Yanks with his frank discussions of the high prices of their products. This wasn't because he's a jerkface, though, but because he's a serial soap killer. The man murders multiple bars of Irish Spring in a single week. If it doesn't come in an economy pack, the price is going to be too high. I've seen him with a fancy glycerin bar - the poor thing never had a chance to see another shower. In fact, I have to use shower gel instead of soap lest we perish under the Vesuvian ashload of soap scum that he brings into our marriage tub. So, the fact that I keep buying soap that he can't use and that I dare not use is probably indicative of some deep psychological flaw, but, hey, pretty soap! However, the cost of the soap wasn't just high for Mike's brutal purposes. The "Glacier Smoothie" soaps run around $9 each, or 3 for $24. This is definitely a gift soap, and in that light, it's a nice trinket for the right person. (Hint: I am the right person.) The packaging is lovely: each bar is protected by plastic then placed in a cotton drawstring bag of coordinating color, to which a metal tag is attached. The tags are meant to evoke the tracking system used by miners during days of yore. The soaps themselves all have names and descriptions mean to conjure Alaskan imagery. I chose "Fireweed Fluff," "Sea Pickle," and "Five-Minute Forecast." The first two had bold semi-opaque looks while FMF was a rugged, milky blue. (See my photos.) In the name of good reviewing I opened up Sea Pickle just now (two months after purchase) and gave it a try. What's interesting is that the bag smelled one way (nice) but the unwrapped soap smelled rather different (but also still nice and probably closer to the described scent of lime and ginger). I don't do well with "perfumey" products, and neither of these scents bothered me. I also have sensitive skin, but it takes several uses for a "bad" soap to get to me, so I'll have to update this review later if there are any issues. Assuming my hands aren't covered in boils. Typing with boils popping might short out the keyboard. The soap IS glycerin, so don't set it down in a wet soap dish where it will slowly melt away like my dream of winning the lottery despite never bothering to buy a ticket. (I decided to use a little terrycloth cushion to act as a glycerin soap rest. Yes, that's my Martha moment of the year. Alert Pinterest.) Aftermath? The fragrance was barely noticeable on my hands afterward, unlike, say, industrial public toilet soap. Suds developed slowly, making this more of a creamer than a frother. The brochure included with each bar suggests that the glacier silt within has moisturizing properties, and perhaps my hands do feel a little softer, actually. Again, I'll update the review if anything interesting happens over time. All in all, the Glacier Smoothies shop was pleasant to browse and the soap makes for a distinctively Alaskan gift. Cut the price by 20-30%, and you could call it a five-star experience. read more

What a quaint little shop in the middle of the tourist district! We stumbled in here by accident and were pleasantly surprised. It is a small storefront with just enough space for five or six people to peruse their soaps and lotions. Their products are made from the silt of glaciers and are all natural. While discussing our purchases over lunch, a local interrupted to say he used Ben regularly as his soap supplier because his skin had never done so well. They have a variety of smells from floral to beachy to masculine (or just clean as we call it) with some deals on purchasing packages. They will also ship as needed. Because we want a natural soap that will help our dry and sensitive skins. The staff was very friendly and informative as well. I read about this place in my Alaska cruise guidebook so I had to check it out. The deal with the soap is that they use glacier silt as an ingredient. In my book, extra exfoliant is always welcome so I was in. They have quite a few different variations and they all smell fabulous! Each soap is wrapped in a cloth bag, which makes for a nice presentation. I did not hestitate to buy a few bars, along with their foot cream. Yes, it is a little expensive, but it is a unique and fancy gift for yourself or someone at home so I didn't have a problem with the price. I love the soap I kept for myself and the foot cream works really well. The lady that worked in the shop was a little technically challenged (she was like, "Yelp?", "Foursquare?", "HUH?????"), but I really think that adds to the charm of this place. This little store in Juneau (next door to the Crepe stand) adds glacier silt to their soaps which allow for soft skin. When asked if they manufacture their soap via melt and pour or cold process, I was told it is a patented process that adds silt and their soaps are made of glycerin. My understanding? It's a melt and pour process and they just add glacier silt to their soap...just as if you would add oatmeal or lavender into a bar of soap. So is it really that special? I guess I'll find out when I try it. But if it is no different from the soaps I make at home...all I have to say is...what a hefty price to pay for glacier silt inside glycerin soap! (I bought 3) Just a thought... One more thing...they offer free samples of soap. It's a sliver of glycerin soap...enough to wash your hands once or twice. No biggie. read more

I went on an Alaskan cruise with my family and we just happened upon this little soap shop. The sweet lady running the shop was very friendly and informative about glacier silt and the soap making. She told us about the patent her daughter had gotten and how it turned into a family business. I fell in love with the scents of the soaps and this adorable little business. Now that we are home from our trip, I have used and love the soaps!! I bought some as gifts too, but now want to keep them for myself. What a great little shop! The woman working there was so sweet. I ended up buying 6 soaps as she had a special price for every 3 soaps you purchased. These make wonderful Alaska gifts for loved ones (and yourself!). They smell great and look great too. My only complaint is that they use artificial colorings/dyes and I try to stay away from that stuff as much as I can. I purchased their "pure" soaps for myself (dye and perfume-free) which aren't as fun looking, but I'm sure I'll enjoy them just the same. read more

I picked up a jar of their shave soap while on vacation. I have tried many different shave soaps in the past but nothing comes close to the smooth lather this soap gives me. I was amazed by how well it worked with my safety razor and even my shave brush is performing better with this soap! This is a must try for any men that like a good shave. read more

Came across this cute little shop while heading back to our cruise ship while in Juneau. I thought the "made in Alaska" glacier silt soap would make great souvenirs for my friends and coworkers at home, so I bought several bars, and kept a few for myself. We go back to Juneau just to go to the Glacier Smoothie store. When we cant get up there I order on line. I like to go back every few years to see what is new. Like most of the other reviews I am not as much into the soap as the body lotion. It may be a little spendy but it is one thing I do to pamper myself. I buy a lot as gifts too. Our favorites are Firewood Fluff and the Original. Just the other day I stopped in the grocery store and asked what kind of perfume I was wearing (this was not the first time), I am down to one bottle so I will need to reorder again soon as we did not make it up there this year. I believe I am a walking advertisement for Glacier Smoothie. Also note, the body lotion goes on very smoothly and does not leave any oil on the skin. It is the best. This shop was closed when my ship disembarked so I placed an online order so that I could sample their soaps and a few other products. I ordered a number of items, including 4 soaps which I had hoped to give to friends as gifts. I received just 1 of the 4 soaps that I was charged for. I sent four emails inquiring about what I assume is an oversight, and they never responded. This is a very bad business practice, and certainly not a way to build a customer base. So, that one soap that they did send was very very expensive. read more
