Let's face it; the shack is adorable. As our shuttle to Mendenhall drove past, I spied the Glacier Silt Soap store sitting all picturesque on the corner. THUMP! That was me whacking my long-suffering husband on the arm. "We're SO going there!" Despite not being a girly girl at all, I'm a sucker for artisan and unusual soap, and soap that lives in its own dollhouse makes me just squee and fall over like a short-legged bunny. Alas, a late arrival in port coupled with the worst debarkation system I've ever experienced on a cruise ship (reason #7 not to book Norwegian for Alaska) meant that time slipped away in Juneau faster than we'd planned, and so we found ourselves on the doorstep of this twee soap paradise about three minutes before closing time. Not a problem. The two ladies within were welcoming and reassured us not to hurry. The charm stayed on even when my husband refused to look at the "manly" soaps and went all Aussie on us Yanks with his frank discussions of the high prices of their products. This wasn't because he's a jerkface, though, but because he's a serial soap killer. The man murders multiple bars of Irish Spring in a single week. If it doesn't come in an economy pack, the price is going to be too high. I've seen him with a fancy glycerin bar - the poor thing never had a chance to see another shower. In fact, I have to use shower gel instead of soap lest we perish under the Vesuvian ashload of soap scum that he brings into our marriage tub. So, the fact that I keep buying soap that he can't use and that I dare not use is probably indicative of some deep psychological flaw, but, hey, pretty soap! However, the cost of the soap wasn't just high for Mike's brutal purposes. The "Glacier Smoothie" soaps run around $9 each, or 3 for $24. This is definitely a gift soap, and in that light, it's a nice trinket for the right person. (Hint: I am the right person.) The packaging is lovely: each bar is protected by plastic then placed in a cotton drawstring bag of coordinating color, to which a metal tag is attached. The tags are meant to evoke the tracking system used by miners during days of yore. The soaps themselves all have names and descriptions mean to conjure Alaskan imagery. I chose "Fireweed Fluff," "Sea Pickle," and "Five-Minute Forecast." The first two had bold semi-opaque looks while FMF was a rugged, milky blue. (See my photos.) In the name of good reviewing I opened up Sea Pickle just now (two months after purchase) and gave it a try. What's interesting is that the bag smelled one way (nice) but the unwrapped soap smelled rather different (but also still nice and probably closer to the described scent of lime and ginger). I don't do well with "perfumey" products, and neither of these scents bothered me. I also have sensitive skin, but it takes several uses for a "bad" soap to get to me, so I'll have to update this review later if there are any issues. Assuming my hands aren't covered in boils. Typing with boils popping might short out the keyboard. The soap IS glycerin, so don't set it down in a wet soap dish where it will slowly melt away like my dream of winning the lottery despite never bothering to buy a ticket. (I decided to use a little terrycloth cushion to act as a glycerin soap rest. Yes, that's my Martha moment of the year. Alert Pinterest.) Aftermath? The fragrance was barely noticeable on my hands afterward, unlike, say, industrial public toilet soap. Suds developed slowly, making this more of a creamer than a frother. The brochure included with each bar suggests that the glacier silt within has moisturizing properties, and perhaps my hands do feel a little softer, actually. Again, I'll update the review if anything interesting happens over time. All in all, the Glacier Smoothies shop was pleasant to browse and the soap makes for a distinctively Alaskan gift. Cut the price by 20-30%, and you could call it a five-star experience.

Okay so I told myself to not write a review and leave it alone but I can't. My experience wasn't…read morelike any others I've ever had in a salon. I booked my daughter for a hair cut. Something she had been begging me for. Finally I agreed to allow it after months of her asking and doing extra things to be on my good side. She's 14 and going into 9th grade and she wanted a dramatic hair cut so I made her sweat a little lol. Anyway I read reviews and looked for a place that I felt was a good spot. That's how I came upon Glow Up. Seemed like a good place. So I made her an appointment online which was nice and convenient. We waited about a week and a half for her appointment. Not too bad. So I bring her in and we are greeted by a lady cutting a man's hair and next to them is a woman obviously waiting to get her hair done and she is just reading a magazine. The woman cutting the man's hair asked what she can do for us and I let her know my daughter has an appointment and she lets us know to have a seat and she'll be with us. I honestly did not get this woman's name who was cutting hair that day and she was the only one cutting hair that I saw while we were inside the salon the entire time we were there and that was my mistake but honestly at a certain point I was upset for my daughter and I wasn't worried about this woman's name. So the lady cutting the man's hair gets done and she asks us what my daughter wants for a cut and my daughter shows her pics and she says oh that's short okay that won't take long and she looks at the lady sitting and waiting and says hey I'm gonna cut her hair really quick it'll take like 5 minutes. I didn't think anything of it but later on I realized that my daughter had the appointment and yet she was talking to the lady like we walked in and she would just get us done and out. the description of the appointment that cost $65 for a women's cut had said it was an hour long appointment. That's what we booked. So she sits my daughter down in her chair and puts the drape thing around her to keep hair from her clothes and she asks if I wanna take a video and I did so I got up and started filming and she grabbed my daughters hair and used clippers to cut the bulk of her hair off. She then does a few cuts here and there not really being precise or even layering her hair like I've ever seen before and says okay great done. We'd been there maybe 10 minutes. Not even. I asked my daughter if she was happy with it and she said yes. I paid $65 plus tax which was about $68 and some change. We walk out and my daughter looks like she is gonna cry. I ask her what's wrong and she says it fine it's okay I can fix it. So I take her back in and I tell the lady she isn't happy with it can you do more. I ask for the pictures and I tell her to please layer it more and make it more like the picture. I said my daughter was afraid to tell you she didn't like it and the lady was nice enough and sat her down and started again. Another 5 minutes go by and she did add more layers to it but she really didn't put a lot of care into my daughters hair. I just felt like my daughter wasn't important to her. The woman who was sitting in the chair next to my daughter was obviously more important because the lady cutting my daughter's hair was hurrying to get back to her. So for $68 and some change we got a 15 minute haircut. She didn't wet her hair at all. She didn't shampoo or condition it. Maybe they don't there idk but for $65 I figured they would. I've never been to a salon that didn't before you got a haircut. And there was not one bit of styling. She literally cut it and sent us on our way. Usually at the end the hairdresser will do a little style. That didn't happen. My daughter said she felt better with her hair after the second time but the whole situation left a bad taste in my mouth. I won't ever go back. One of the things I read on the glow up Facebook page was that they enjoyed pampering their clients. It was put in different words but that's basically it. It makes them happy to pamper the client. We didn't get that. It was rushed and there wasn't care put into our appointment or into my daughters needs. I should've complained while we were there but I wanted to leave and be done with it. I was upset and just felt frustrated by it all and knew I needed to breathe before I said or did anything. So here I am. A day later. I do regret not speaking up at the time a part of me feels like a bad mom for not immediately throwing a fit about it and demanding better service but maybe this is better. To write an honest review for others to see and hopefully not go through what we did. I hope our next appointment in the next salon we decide to go to here in Juneau isn't like this one. Good luck everyone. You can go here if you like but we won't be back. *I gave two stars because in the end my daughter said she was okay with her haircut. Idk if she is being truthful but I hope so.

I've had similar experiences as Sarah S. below. The office…read moremanager repeatedly sent me invoices before payments by my insurance company, sometime before submitting a claim, stating I didn't have coverage. Moreover, I've gotten bills from their office claiming I owed a certain total amount without any information about what services or when they occurred. In 2021, I had a regular appointment scheduled but Lonnie Anderson was not there for an exam, yet I was charged for it as a claim was filed to my insurance. Even after I meeting with her and having her call the insurance company in August 2022 to verify my coverage and a specific claim I continue to get full price invoices; I got one in the mail today. When I had my very first appointment I was asked to pay for services the day of the appointment. She filed a claim to my insurance and was paid in full without notifying me. When I approached her about this, she said she kept the additional payment with the intent of giving me credit for my next appointment, which was 6 months later. This person is all about getting and keeping money. And she is rude and abrupt, perhaps with the intent of intimidation. I canceled my next appointment with Lonnie Anderson. As Sarah S. indicated, this is disappointing because the dental hygienist (reason I stayed with this office) is outstanding and Lonnie Anderson is personable and a competent dentist.

No complaints. Staff is very friendly and appointments are usually pretty quick.read more
