Russia has a significant history to Alaska and getting a bit of it's culture can sometimes come across as unexpected but as you read up on the history you acknowledge the historical influence here. For a town like Juneau learning this culture is educational and in the case of a gift shop... pleasant. I got two items here which I really enjoy. I got a Russian Pecking Paddle game which is a lot of fun to play and I got an ornament of a Russian doll which was awesome to put on the Christmas tree at home. Lots of other intriguing merchandise here reflecting Russian culture. Cool USSR t shirts and lots of wooden dolls to browse over all the way to fine jewelry makes this place (at least for us) to slow down and really appreciate and look at the unique merchandise!

House of Russia and Russian-American Company are the two big stores for Russian stuff in Juneau,…read morebut House of Russia is the only one that's family operated ("Alaskan family operated for 25 years" says the sign in the window). Russian-American Company has five stores in Alaska and seem like the Wal-Mart of Russian tchotchke stores. Too bad they couldn't hire Yakov Smirnoff to be a greeter. Matrushkas (nesting dolls) are the thing to get at House of Russia. They also have Santas, snowmen figurines, and little wooden Christmas trees imported from Russia. They have really nice Russian ornaments. I ended up buying an ornament at Russian-American Company instead though because it was much cheaper than House of Russia's. Yes, I'm a horrible, horrible person.

I first came across these unique pins at Elliott Bay Books, in Seattle, and immediately fell in love with their quirky designs. Sure, they have the usual flowers and birds for your grandma... but they also have body parts and organs, syringes and beakers, deck chairs and masted tallships, skeletons and whiskey bottles! The pins are intricately patterned and made by hand. You really have to see them up close to appreciate the detail, but these aren't shoddy made-in-China tie tacks. The high-quality craftsmanship is obvious, and I get tons of compliments on mine. Most of the designs also come as zipper pulls if you're not a pin person. Their website is no-frills, but easy to browse and purchase from, and each item has a funny description - you can tell they are serious about their work but have a sense of humor. And the pins are amazingly affordable - most are about $12 and I didn't see anything over $20! You'd pay just as much for some mass-produced trash at a chain store. Shipping is a flat $3 per order and it's FAST. I even got a follow-up email from the company thanking me for my purchase! Even if you're not headed to Alaska anytime soon, if you like fun, unique jewelry with a slightly dark sense of humor, check out William Spear's awesome stuff.

Location, it's right in the middle of everything. There's shirts and merchandise hanging from the outside so it's super easy to find. There's another store right before it that looks similar but it's a different store. Erlinda's is the second entrance. There is so much to see. There 's a great variety of shirts for everyone in the family. There's magnets, bottle openers, jewelry, jackets, etc. I love purchasing enamel pins where ever I travel and she had plenty. They were inexpensive compared to all the other stores I visited. I visited about 3x in one day because I couldn't find anything better in variety and price. I purchased 3 shirts, a pin & postcard. My experience was great and I definitely recommend stopping by! My Mom loved her shirt and all thanks to Nonette!

It's a way to actually bring back a piece of the culture. We found this shop in our wandering and it didn't disappoint. In the place where the locals shop, we went in and found this stunning piece. It was a driftwood, ceramic, and metal hanging art piece. It had culture pieces from the area and was something we would love to have in our home year round. The staff there are knowledgeable, informed of shipping and the pieces they carry. Explaining a lot of how they have the selection they do. Even though they were busy she made us feel like we were important and not rushed. She also multi tasked like a fiend and assisted others while we thought over whether or not to ship. We decided to ship and the staff checked on the price which was very reasonable considering the size and fragility of the piece. We paid and waited for the item when we got home. In my rush I did not ask key questions or remember the answer to the questions I asked at the store. I blame the drink package. Well I messaged the store and the manager/owner was also helpful beyond the time difference and my randomness. Even though it takes effort to get there when we come back to Alaska I hope to see this shop there and if it's not in the same location I'm okay calling an uber to get taken there. 15/10. Highly recommend. When we got the package home it was wrapped beyond well. It was wrapped with the care that this person liked their job and wanted to do it well.
