This is a pretty cool store. The store looks small but it is jam packed with items. There are lots of Native Alaskan Art work for sale along with some pretty cool gem stones or geode. I picked up a really nice rock for my collection. That was pretty cool. It is tailored to tourists. The shop is located downtown of Juneau and yes the store was very busy when we came. The staff was also very friendly as well. Prices are reasonable. I highly recommend visiting this store. read more

DO NOT SHIP ITEMS FROM MT. JUNEAU TRADING COMPANY. My beautiful 2300.00 statue arrived broken. They have not solved my problem. I contacted the shipper insurance, the collect the statue and shipping contents, and Mt. Juneau Trading Company is no longer taking my calls. UPS says they settled the matter with Mt. Juneau Trading Company, and that I should call them for a solution. They are now not taking my calls. I was on a cruiseship and am also considering contacting the cruise ship company to lodge a complaint about Mt. Juneau Trading Company's business practices. I seek a refund or replacement. My calls are NO LONGER being answered. I expressed concern when I purchased the statue, about it breaking during shipping and KYLE TRIPP assured me it would arrive unbroken. I stepped into this store mainly to take refuge under the sweltering heat in late June. I noted that there were a multitude of various Alaskan items and jewelry to appeal to a variety of tourist tastes. The jewelry is reasonable, so of course I indulged in a pair of silver small hoop earrings with Alaskan black diamonds:). It's like walking in to a museum but better, because you can buy everything you see, if money is no object. Authentic Alaskan art, from totem poles to mammoth tusks, and anything in between. We visited DOZENS of jewelry retail shops (Vancouver, Ketchikan, Icy Strait Point) unsuccessful in finding handcrafted authentic Alaskan matching rings that we truly loved. Our search for commemorative pieces ended when we entered the AMAZING Mt. Juneau Trading Post. Explaining to Ms. Erika (sales staff) our needs, she made the time to listen and then personally explain the meaning behind the design of the pieces we selected. FYI...this store is family owned and the jewelry artist who made the rings is Ms. Erika's brother. When shopping in Juneau visit first and last, the Mt. Juneau Trading Post before making any purchase of authentic Alaskan art. While in Alaska I wanted to replace the pair of native Alaskan fur slippers I bought 10 years ago. When I saw the Mt Juneau Trading Post and how many slippers they carried, I thought for sure I'd find my dream slippers. After trying on a dozen pairs (they are made by hand and all sized differently), I finally found one pair I liked. $200 on sale, eek! But hey, that's a 10-year investment. I took them out of my suitcase upon our return to San Francisco and at first, they were a pure delight. Warm, fuzzy, comfy. But after two days, the outside fur lining started peeling off and on day 3, one slipper was ripped open - just by my wearing it. So here's what I think: these slippers spend an eternity on the shop's shelves and when someone buys them, maybe the skin/fur is too old and it cracks open. But for $200 you expect the slippers to hold - right? So I called the shop, talked to various people who only identified themselves by first names, didn't get a strong reaction or apology and after 3 calls, they finally told me to send the slippers over. That they'd replace the outside lining and send them back by mail. From the tone of voice, I was clearly bugging them. I packed the slippers and sent them off. That was in October 2011. April 2012, 6 months later, I haven't heard from them. I'm still wearing my old slippers (that now have a hole in the sole) and I know that if I don't call these guys again and again, nothing will happen. I'm super upset that they don't have the professional courtesy to at least update me. I gave them my phone number, my email address, my postal address. What's with the AWFUL customer service?? I want my slippers back with a new lining. I do. I'll keep praying to the altar of tourism gods, maybe that will help. Mt Juneau Trading folks, you know how to reach me. read more

This was my favorite shop in Juneau while visiting (along with a couple thousand other cruise shippers). This shop is worth finding, it's crammed full of quality native work in many, many different styles and materials. I can't even begin to describe it, there is so much to see and buy. Jewelry (of course), the native child dolls were popular for grammas to bring back to kiddies, drums, ivory and bone carvings, some antique jewelry. Items from $1 to thousands of dollars. You can tell the pieces have been collected carefully and over the years although some are new also. Juneau didn't thrill me much as a city (OK I didn't see much of it) but the Mt Juneau Trading Post was great. read more

Went to Juneau for a week my very first trip to Alaska. I had been looking all week for that one special souvenir for myself without any luck. Don't get me wrong there are so many beautiful things everywhere, but I was looking for that one special thing that said I finally made it to Alaska. Toward the end of my trip I ran into their booth at the Celebration art market I saw the most beautiful shark bracelet. Being Wooshkeetaan it caught my eye. Its amazing the difference from the stamped engraved tourist stuff to their work. The original bracelet I saw was a little bigger then I was looking for. They sent someone from their shop to hand deliver one they had in their shop they thought I might like. It was beautiful but didn't hit the spot. They told me to check out their store and see if I liked anything there. Checked out the store and believe me its amazing. I do professional native bead work so I have to admit I'm picky for what I'm shopping for. Anyway myself, friends,and family bought a lot of stuff from their shop by far the best shopping we did the whole trip. Some items were in other shops and we did notice a difference in price, but it is very important for us to support native owned business. Well back to the bracelet.... The staff knew that I was disappointed that I couldn't find anything like the bracelet I saw in the art market. They said they could custom make one for me. I jumped at the idea, but I wanted Andrew Tripp to make it since he made the original one I looked at. I offered him a hand sewn bag with medicine and am honored to have found him to make it for me. I got the bracelet and it is even more beautiful then I had imagined. It is worth every penny I love it. The bracelet is done with such care its as if a friend has personally crafted it just for me. I had the most wonderful trip to Alaska and I will always have this bracelet to remind me of it. Please do not be surprised when I'm ready to order something else all the way from California. This is the only store you need to visit to purchase all your Alaskan made souvenirs. The artists are local and the beautiful items are truly made in Alaska by Natives. I bought a beautiful carved silver necklace and bracelet and the artist was upstairs in the store. I found a gorgeous silk scarf and some smaller items for family gifts. So many stores in Alaska are not local and only cater to the cruise ships. I know that my purchases at the Mt Juneau Trading Post are benefiting the local people and will help me remember my wonderful trip to this great state. read more

Pretty native art work! I bought a pair of handmade boots and moccasins and love them! I get lots of complements on how bad-ass the boots are :) Pricey but well worth it. I also bought a shirt with native art work on it. There clothing is pretty awesome if you're looking for something rather than a cheap looking generic Alaska t shirt. The only complaint I would have is was on older woman was walking around and helping a guest and she was rudely talking to the man about what kind of fox skin he was looking at. She just chuckled in a smart ass way at him and talked to him like he was stupid. If she's going to be sassy then maybe she shouldn't work during the busy season with tourists. But other than that the staff was really friendly and I ended up spending $400 with them and walked away satisfied :) read more

My review concerns a custom order, and I'm giving two stars instead of one because of the treasures to be found there. My husband and I visited in early May. We asked the manager, Jack, if we could order a custom piece. I asked for a hair stick with a scrimshaw carving of a wolf. He suggested a totemic wolf in the native style and also told me he had a piece of red wood that would match the ink in the carving. I asked him to make the base a blade shape rather than a thin post. I put down a deposit of $65 and was told 7 to 10 business days with an additional payment between $120 and $140 plus S&H. I returned home and waited three weeks. After no package or calls, I called and spoke with Jackie. She apologized and said she wasn't sure of the progress but would give Jack my message and ask him to call me. A few days later, with no calls or package, I called and spoke with Erin. I was told again they weren't sure but would remind Jack to give me a call. This repeated for weeks. Every 7 to 10 days, I would call, speak with Jackie or Erin, receive an apology, and be told they would pass my message to Jack. Once I was told that Jack "is pretty bad for forgetting messages." After my first call, they told me they would be happy to give me a refund. This should have been a red flag. Eventually I told Jackie I would appreciate someone calling me back. I was frustrated with the lack of communication and the fact I had waited a month-and-a-half for a simple order. Jackie apologized and told me she would ask. On 07/05, I called again and was told they were busy but would pass along my message to Jack and call me with an update. After two hours, I called again to cancel my order that was now two months late. This time, Jack answered. He told me my order was ready and he would send me a picture for my approval. My original order was for a hair stick with a blade-shaped base of red wood and a carved scrimshaw piece with a totemic wolf in black and red. The picture I received was of a thin piece of bone, barely the width of a pencil, jammed into a piece of scrimshaw with a plain carved wolf head. I called Jack and told him the picture did not match what I had ordered at all. His response was, "Okay, we'll just get you a refund on that. I'll have one of my girls call you back since we're pretty busy right now." I called back and spoke with Jackie. They first quoted me around $115, and I told them my slip said $65. I heard her check with Jack, and she told me I had actually paid $55. I didn't argue because I wanted the experience to be over. While Jackie processed my refund, I told her I did not hold her at fault but that to say I was disappointed and disgusted was an understatement. To have waited two months and to have called numerous times only to be sent a picture of such a slapshod piece was heartbreaking. A child could have done a better job. It didn't match my order, most of which Jack had proposed. I told her their level of customer service was inexcusable. I then said I was just a tourist they would never see again, and I knew my opinion would mean nothing to them. It wouldn't lose them any business, and it wouldn't matter to the staff. Jackie apologized, telling me she didn't blame me. I told her I wanted Jack to know my feelings, and she said she would tell him. I am currently waiting for my reduced refund to come through. I am disgusted with the total lack of communication and caring and the laughable caricature of my order with which I was presented. When someone gives me a timeframe, I expect them to honor it. I don't expect them to offer me a refund every time I check in. I don't expect them to never reach out to me. I don't expect them to deliver an inferior product that does not match my order at all. I was impressed with the wares on their shelves, and I bought many gifts that I really liked. They can produce great pieces. However, I would stay away from custom orders. I bought a sliver raven bracelet for $425. A day after, my wrist started breaking out in blisters. I wear nothing but sterling silver, I am not allergic to real sterling silver. I called within two days and tried to work with them. They said it may have be a chemical they treat the bracelets with and would call me with more info. They never called back. I called 3 more times and I was always told management was out. I would have gladly done store credit but I was so grossly miss handled. They do not care about the customers. read more

Right in the middle of the tourist area rush near the cruise ship port is this trading post that comically describes itself as he oldest trading post in Alaska that was established "a long time ago." The store is split into two levels. He first has a variety of souvenirs of all prices and is easily accessed, but the gem of their inventory is upstairs--just to the left of the main level entrance is a set of stairs with a sign that points up to their workshop. It's not handicapped or elderly friendly, as it's a long flight up, but it's worth looking around if you can make it up. The floor is jammed with so many items--everything from jewelry and locally made drums to carvings and paintings. Much of it is locally made, which is what we were looking for, and there is so much that the single floor can keep you busy for over half an hour. Be warned that it looks like it is more of a setup where vendors have spaces and price their own items, so there is a big difference I prices of some things. I'm talking like ranges of five dollars to hundreds of dollars. But it's quality stuff nonetheless with items we didn't see anywhere else.
