This is a great cheese store with many varieties of cheese and other cheese related products. I would have given them 5 stars except that the staff was not wearing masks behind the counter until they had to wait on someone - poor covid practices! They had a couple of sales bins with some OK deals. We also found a shredded fondue cheese that we could not find anywhere in the Madison area so we now have a closer source than having it shipped from Wegmans out east. Monroe is a great cheese lovers destination (and beer too) and this place adds to it being a good location for a road trip. read more

I love checking out the areas that I'm in for the meat and cheese shops and not really for any of the cheeses but more for the meats and meat sticks. I jumped on yelp and found this place in the area and they were open on a Sunday because most are closed on Sundays. The building had the Swiss theme that can be found in the area which I was not expecting but very cool. I was greeted by an older gentleman as I walked in and I looked around the store and it is mostly cheese and very little meats. They had the regulars like wine, beer, condiments, clothing, lots of cheeses, sausages, pizzas, frozen sausages etc etc. After looking around I noticed they had very little meat sticks but I did find spicy beef sticks which had beef as the main ingredient. The veal brats were a no brainer since I love veal and once again veal is the main ingredient so I grabbed them because how often do you see veal brats. This is really a cheese shop first and foremost with some other products on the shelves but still a nice find because of the veal brats if nothing else. read more

A great cheese store in the center of the cheese-making universe, Monroe Wisconsin. We made a brief stop during on all-day explore of Green county WI. With COVID closing down our favorite farmers market in Madison, we embarked on a full day road trip in search of artisanal goodness and this spot near Monroe fit the bill. This is my absolute favorite cheese store in ALL of Wisconsin and I make a special trip a couple of times out of the year! The proprietor Tony is a delightful part of the experience. It certainly doesn't hurt that Alp and Dell just so happens to be connected to my favorite (world award winning) cheese maker ROTH. You are able to work through a door in the shop and watch one of your new sure to be favorites being made! This delectable fromagerie has definitely got you covered in regards to all things queso or it might be better in this case to say fondue!!! The selection of local and international offerings just can't be beat and the prices are unbelievable for the quality and variety offered! I'm a huge fan of this place- great selection- you're surely going to find something to try. When I'm in Wisconsin, I'm always going to opt for the local made cheese, but Alp and Dell does offer other brands to widen their selection. (you can clearly tell which ones are local) I think my last purchase was around $40- and that's me being conservative about my cheese. I could easily spend a ton of money trying all the different things. I do love the bin in the front that's like a big discount bin- you'll find random stuff here based on store inventory, but don't pass up at least looking! read more

Great place to find a variety of cheeses. Most of these are Wisconsin made cheeses. They also have a selection of other items including meats like beef logs and landejegers. I also liked that they had some local craft beersnto buy and liquor. Alp & Dell also has a deli counter where rhey habe sandiwches available. I didnt try any of these. If you pay close attention they have some bargain bin cheeses. The customer service was fair. When I went here recently, I was shopping with two other people. We spent over $150 between the three of us. One of my friends asked if we could have the special. Which was if you spend $75 or more then you get a free tote bag. The cashier.told her no and it wasnt in a nice way. She explained that in no uncertain terms could we get one tote unless one of us spent over the $75. I could have cared less about the tote howeber it was how we were told NO that was a real downer. I was happy with the selection of cheese that I was able to purchase from baby swiss, havarti to fresh cheese curds. I wanted to get some cheese fudge but I already had pounds and pounds of cheese. Cheese lovers must make the pilgrimage here. The offerings from the Roth label are epic. Many are international award winners and there's lots of tasting available. They offer so many varieties. I am told that this place is the best in Green County, which itself is a cheese standout among Wisconsin cheese-producing regions. So although I have nothing to which to compare it, I can say that this is a GREAT place to come for cheese. The bargain bins should have almost everything for which you might be looking, although perhaps not in the size that you have in mind. I wanted a bunch of little pieces of various cheeses to try, and the bargain bins supplied all but one, including Dill Havarti, Peppadew Havarti, Gruyere, and Fontina (both Swedish- AND Italian-style!). The regular cheese prices are entirely reasonable; stuff in the bargain bins is a steal! Peppadew havarti: A- Gruyere: C+, strangely bland Swedish-style Fontina: B+ Dill havarti: B, great on a turkey sandwich Smoked gouda: B-, the wedge that I brought home was sort of rough-tasting and a big disappointment compared to the awesome stuff that I sampled in the store Van Gogh: A, SO smooth and creamy, just slightly sweet and nutty, one of the best cheeses I've ever had. I ate an entire wedge of this stuff in two days and I have never been more than a cheese nibbler. If I ever make another trip to Monroe, I will be sure to stop in to get some Van Gogh and to try a few others. read more

If you are headed to Monroe to get the Wisconsin cheese experience, there are two must stops: the cheesemaking museum, and the Alp and Dell cheese store. You have to show up very early in the morning to see the cheese manufacturing facility in operation. But, if you go during other parts of the day, you can still view the operation through windows, read some very interesting information, and see a video about cheesemaking. On our visit, the cheese store owner took some time to show us around, explain variety of things about cheesemaking, and answer our questions. He is very passionate about his profession and made us feel like welcomed guests. The cheese store is outstanding! If you are going to purchase cheese in the Monroe area, this is the place to do it. We stopped at a couple of other cheesemaking/outlet locations and were disappointed in their offerings. What a great factory outlet cheese store. They have an amazing swiss selection and even have a raclette corner with an impressive variety of meltable goodness. They obviously have a great selection of the Emmi/Roth Kase family, but host some other cheeses from around the state. After going on a brewery tour, we took them to Alp & Dell because, well, what's more Wisconsin than beer and cheese? It was the first time my wife and I had gone, also, and we were not disappointed. There were at least 12 different types of cheese to taste, and MANY more varieties on the shelves waiting to be bought and savored at home. This is a very nice cheese shop. Like others have stated, hitting the bargain bins is the way to go. We got quite an assortment of cheeses on our mini adventure. One cannot venture north of the Cheddar Curtain without returning with a boat load of cheese, so this is certainly a stop for any cheese lover visiting the Green County area. Great cheese and wonderful customer service! It's a cute store just on the edge of town in Monroe. They sell Roth cheese that they make on site and sell some others brands as well. They also sell locally made sausages, wine and New Glarus Beer. They offer free tours of the cheese factory that conclude with a yodel from the owner and cheese maker Tony. It's a one stop shop for everything I love and I wouldn't come to Monroe without a stop at the Alp and Dell! read more

Is a three hour drive worth it for some cheese? Most definitely! I try to go there when I visit my Aunt's farm because they have the best cheese selection ever and it is CHEAP. They also have various candies, summer sausages, and real honey and maple syrup but I strictly stick to the cheese. Of course their staff knows anything and everything about cheese which is a good thing becasue I normally leave that place with 3 or 4 cheeses that I've never heard of. They also make some custom made options like cheddar with horseradish and muenster with mushrooms. My wife and I found this place on our way up to the Dells. We were looking for a cheese place to stock up on some Wisconsin cheeses. It was a little bit out of the whey (heh heh) but the reviews and scenery helped make our decision, and we were glad we went. Not only do they sell their own various styles of cheeses, but have an eclectic variety from all over Europe and parts of Wisconsin. There's even some locally made sausages and wursts from farms a stones throw away. We were looking for some baby swiss and enlisted the help of the mustached gentleman behind the counter who also recomended some other cheese that were sadly destined for a cheese competition but because of the Covid, they were on sale for very reasonable prices. We picked up the sheep's milk soft cheese and a spicy brie style called Snap Dragon (my favorite). We will definitely go out of our way to come back and suggest you do the same. read more

The most striking thing here is the sheer number of cheeses available and the reasonable prices. I was not able to take advantage of the daily tour at 10:00 am, but I did get the last slice of their world champion cheese, and was surprised that for its fame, it was not expensive. And it was in short an exquisite swiss variety. Soft, nutty and slightly creamy for a swiss. The name is GrandCru Surchoix, and the brand is Roth.Even they are out of that one, you can pick up a similar one which won second place. It is well worth the trip here to sample and stock up. Nice choice of wines, too. And as someone else here pointed out, just a real Wisconsin experience. Round it out by heading over to one of the local breweries. read more

Our stop here was part of a post Thanksgiving family day. To sample Wisconsin's finest, we started by visiting the New Glarus Brewery and then headed down to the Alp and Dell for cheese. Based on the great reviews, we weren't disappointed. Great selection of cheeses. We appreciated the samples to try some different kinds. I would have liked to see cheese being made but we were there in the afternoon. Some displays to show how it is made would have been nice.
