We've stopped here many times over the years for our cheese fix (some of the best curds). This time was hands down the busiest. The store is on the smaller side and there was a crowd of people ordering cheese and grilled cheese sandwiches on a Friday. Have a plan - don't decide at the front of the line, please. We got our grilled cheese after about 20 minutes. It was good but definitely wasn't on sourdough like stated on the menu. The special sauce was like an aioli - good on the side but happy I didn't get it on there as-is. Tried the mouseketeer (3 cheese) and it was good. We went back in after to pick up our cheese curds and waited in line again for at least another 15 minutes. All in all, great stop if you're in the area. We get cheese gift boxes and cheese for our Christmas every year. We ordered our gift boxes online and picked up along with cheese curds and a variety of other cheeses on our way to FL for the Christmas holidays. The cheese boxes are only $15. We purchase sausage from another business and add them to the cheese boxes. The cheese here is so fresh and creamy. It is the reason we drive out of our way to come here. And we have a nice variety to charge on our cheese and sausage platter over the holidays. The clerks are knowledgeable and friendly. We have been coming here for years when it use to be a small counter and register in the barn and they had a dog to greet everyone. The cheese was ridiculously low priced when I went there which is now 2 years ago but am going back in a week for the Packers game. I had a cheese tray sent to my relatives in PA for Christmas. They loved the cheddar. The dairy has a trademarked recipe called Stettler Swiss. I loved it. It's more like a baby Swiss. I also had the Ukrainian cheese. Not crazy about that one. The staff was very nice, and helpful, but the food was not worth the time, the money or the drive. A few fly paper strips would go a long way in the eating areas. It was a beautiful day for a ride in the country so we headed out to Decatur Dairy. We ordered a 3 mouseketeers grilled cheese sandwich with special sauce and it was very good! They serve Chocolate shop ice cream which is good but we thought maybe they would make their own but they don't. There's a nice shaded picnic area with tables to sit and eat. We bought some cheese and cheese curds to take home. There's a bathroom for use. The staff was very welcoming and friendly. If you pay by credit card they add a surcharge of 3.5% to your bill. Every time I have visited Decatur Dairy, I've left with a few pounds of cheese. There's nothing like Wisconsin lactose! Like so many others, when you arrive to this creamery, you pull up to a building that looks like a farm with a small plant in front. They're a handful of parking spots, and apart from modest signage, you wouldn't know you were pulling up to top-notch, third-generation creamery owned by an award-winning, Master Cheesemaker. On my does it yesterday, I was the only one in the shop until another customer walked in. Typically, there can be as many as a half a dozen or more customers in the tiny space. There's nowhere to sit and eat, but if you taste test enough different cheeses, ans maube some regionally-made sausage, you won't leave hungry. The ladies behind the counter are always very friendly and Incredibly helpful. Just as important, they're also very knowledgeable, even Kyli, the youngest of the team who helped me yesterday. I had plenty of tastes, she gave plenty of good recommendations and I left with plenty of cheese. Again, like other Wisconsin creameries, Decatur sticks to regional specialties from brick and bitterkase, cheddar to farmer, gouda to havarti, Muenster to Swiss, and, in my opinion, the awful blue cheese and Limburger varieties. The Stettler family offers variations on all of these categories. Decatur, of course, has a slew of different curd choices. On this visit, I immediately went for a Muenster and was in search of something special. I was offered smoked, pepper, and a few others, and was thrilled with a slightly-aged muenster cheese which I had never seen before elsewhere. I also took home a half pound of Ukrainian cheese, something unique. The last two winners on my visit were the Stettler Swiss family specialty and an eight-year-old cheddar which was just shy of being crumbly and just at the edge of beginning to gain some crystalline texture. The prices are so outstanding I feel like a FIB pirate taking Cheesehead booty! Decatur Dairy sells mostly their own cheeses, but they do sell some from other creameries around Wisconsin and a few from out of state. It doesn't make any sense to me to buy anything but what they produce in house. They also have a half-dozen ice creams from another Creamery, and those are worth tasting and enjoyable to take a scoop out into the parking lot. They are so fresh and flavorful, noticeably better than anything you'll buy in the big box grocery freezer. read more

I stopped here again on one of my recent trips up to Wisconsin. The cheese curds were delicious and I brought some of their havarti and ghost pepper cheddar back for some of my friends. I love cheese, so unsurprisingly I love Decatur Dairy! Lots of varieties of cheese curd samples greet you when you come in. We all sampled loads before having a look around the shop. It's small but there's plenty there. My only criticism is that the cooler with the pre-cut cheese and the spreads etc is behind a counter, so you can't paw through everything. But that's a small grumble. I like that the cheese is mostly available to be cut for you. I was able to sample a nice havarti too. They also sell really, really good grilled cheese sandwiches for £3. I had one with butterkase and it was really the best grilled cheese I've ever had. My other purchase was a bag of olive cheese curds - so savoury and salty and delicious. I have lived in Green County for over 10 years and I only recently discovered the Decatur Dairy through a radio ad. I had to buy a gift for my friend who is from Europe and has an intense appreciation of cheese. I purchased several flavors of their world championship Havarti and the Muenster. We are now both converts to the dairy. I just want to say THIS IS THE BEST CHEESE I HAVE EVER HAD!!! The shop is small and the dairy is tucked away in a beautiful country landscape. The drive is gorgeous, but the cheese is better. If you love cheese, this is a must stop. And if you find you love it as much as me, but the location is not convenient, then go ahead and use their easy online order and delivery, you will not be disappointed, I promise. Just a footnote, me and my friend went through our first three pounds in a weekend and I had to make a second trip back within four days. I would never have thought I would be Yelping about cheese, but this place is too good to keep secret. What can I say except for "WOW!!!!" Went to this place while visiting some friends and was just blown away. The customer service here was fantastic. Everyone in the shop was so nice!!! When we asked for a sample and what the employee's favorite cheese was, we ended up getting five or six samples. We even got to meet the master cheese maker. We tried three different grilled cheese sandwiches which were perfectly cheesy! We also tried the Mac and cheese which was also so delicious! I am very dissapointed in their customer service. I purchased cheese in a store that then sent my order via email to Decautr dairy. I purchased on the 4th of August. I was told it was a five day ship time. I did not recieve it until day 7. They attempted to deliver on the 6th day, but our business is closed on friday's. When the box was delivered, I could smell the cheese before I opened it. My cheese curds were all melted together. I called the company and was told there wasn't anything they could do about it. I spoke to Andrea, and she said I could just put the cheese in the refrigerator and it should be ok to eat. I would never have cheese shipped through this company again. read more

It is really all incredibly good and economical too. You can buy fresh cream and also butter for 2 bux a lb. Just a little storefront retail at the front of the Dairy off of county Road F. If you are ever around this area, you DEFINITELY have to check out the Decatur Dairy. They offer tours (cheap, $2 when we went) that have a very passionate cheese maker tell you all about the process. Did you know all cheese is white? Things like munster and cheddar are colored for looks purposes only. Guess that never occurred to me. Anyways, the real reason to stop in is the cheese. Simply brilliant. Decent samples as you enter, and brilliant grilled cheese. So brilliant that I recently travelled a couple of hours across London out to the sticks to go to a German deli in an attempt to get a cheese similar to one they sold at Decatur. Not sure which was better (just means I'll have to return to Decatur next time I'm in Wisconsin, which is really no effort!).
