Really hate to say it because I have been coming to them for YEARS as well as my child. The glasses selection has gone down badly to where we purchase at Costco . The app times are ridiculously far out I schedule a year out and I find it ridiculous to have to do so they won't accommodate rescheduled appointments. I needed to schedule for a sat they tried to book me in AIEA office which I live in a whole other city for one and for two months out. The hours aren't reasonable either closing at 3 doesn't give a working parent any flexibility to make a appointment anymore sadly I must have to part ways after almost a decade of being a customers. read more

So first my apt was scheduled for 1:30. I was take back at 1:40. I was asked some questions and told to wait here. I was then left in a room by myself until 2:25. No one checked on me or anything. I then was sent to another room where an ultrasound was performed and was left to sit there and wait. I kept asking how much longer because I thought an hour was more than enough time and because I had another appointment to be at. At 2:45 when no one came in, hadn't seen or heard from the doctor I was supposed to see, I walked out. At no point did anyone stop me or ask me where I was going. No one from the office called to check on me or anything!! The worst visit ever. I wouldn't waste my time because obviously the doctor thinks it's okay to waste my time. If I call and cancel without notice I get charged but what do I get for having a doctor completely waste my time!!!! read more

Appointment today was terrific. Sarah introduced herself and explained very clearly everything she was going to do. She told me the readings for my glaucoma exam. UPDATE: I have been to Dr. Yuen quite a few times. I'm pleased with his informative and friendly style. Unfortunately when I ordered prescription sunglasses in August of 2021, I was forced to pay for everything upfront. I used my HMSA insurance and paid the difference, for a total of over $400. When I went in to pick them up, the lab had made a couple of mistakes. I asked to have the correct frames re-ordered and offered to wait another 2 months. Alan, the office manager said that isn't possible. After an uncomfortable conversation where he tried to get me to take the wrong sunglass frames which were missing a tint, I finally got my money back. This was on November 3, 2021. It's now January 21 2022: Alan the office manager has taken over 6 months total, to refund my HMSA account for over $217 so I can't use my insurance to get glasses. I've called 7 times, leaving messages and can't even get a call back. I'm wondering, is this insurance fraud? I have reported this to the BBB. Meanwhile, no glasses. This is discouraging. I can't recommend Aloha VIsion Consultants Kapahulu office for this reason. read more

Had the flu 1 day before cataract surgery. In the meantime I had a chance to decide to upgrade the surgery and spend a few thousand on my eye. Called the office and was greeted with a "Hello, hold plz!!!" Once someone addressed me, I let them know I wanted to talk to someone who could break the pricing down for me. Then left my number for the office manager to call me to follow up. This was before lunch, and here we are the next day and still no call back. Wow!! I'll give another chance and then I go somewhere else to spend my money!! Still waiting for a call back!! read more

They're located in Kapahulu. The parking here is tight, but I never had an issue with that. My dermatologist is literally right across of them on the 5th floor and I haven't gotten my eyes checked out in 15 years so I finally decided it was time. They had me fill out intro paper work twice, which was annoying. Once when I made the appointment and had my PCP refer me. Then another time when I came in, this I did not understand. I think maybe they had lost my paper work? The staff are friendly and efficient. I was in and out in about an hour. I did have to wait around 15 minutes to get seen and another 15 minutes to wait until my eyes got dilated from the routine checkup. Nanea approved and they take my insurance! read more

Dirty reception area. Stains on chairs, had to take a brochure to sit on. Extremely dirty exam room. Trash overflowing , hair on equipment, dirty floor, looked like I was in a broom closet. and dust on equipment stashed behind exam chair. (a no window room. ) No paper on exam chair. Ugh. I told Doc Komo, she didn't seem bothered. She said she would tell the staff to clean? Totally unacceptable for a Doctor to keep caring on . It's Cleaner at a nail salon. Won't go back. Doc Yuen seemed good But Doc Komo isn't practicing safely in such an exam room. This place needs a thorough clean. read more

I had two different cataract / lens replacement surgeries in the span of 2 and a half years. Dr. Yuen took care of me both times. I am completely satisfied and grateful for the results. 20/ 20 vision... I accepted that there are unavoidable side effects associated with this type of procedure...mostly the appearance of floaters. No big deal considering the alternative is to go blind. The doctor also recommended a less expensive treatment when I told him that my job situation was unstable. I would highly recommend Dr Yuen to anyone who needs a similar type of surgery. read more

Dr. Jason Tokunaga Damaged my optic nerve during a cataract surgery gone very bad. ... I'm basically blind in my right eye. His bed side manner was terrible, I knew something was wrong because I had already had on cataract replacement that went well with another Doctor. Dr. Tokunaga applied to much pressure during surgery sucking my old lense out, and probably didn't provide enough pressure lowering drops. He had the nerve to say oh it doesn't hurt that bad, when I flinched in pain and said that hurts.... I'm blind in my right eye and think about this everyday! He never admitted it or apologized to make it worse! Dragged it on for months, bringing back in for test and office visits. There are plenty other eye doctors, no one should be seeing Dr. Tokunaga, if they value their sight. His staff in questionable also, I waited over an hour once, then 30-min in the room, and finally left because I had a meeting. I was very pleased after my first visit with Aloha Vision Consultants last year. After my initial eye examination I met with Dr. Tokunaga who went over the results of my screening. I purchased my supply of disposable contact lenses from them and I was surprised and happy that they scheduled my 2020 appointment before. I left! Fast forward to today, May 11,2020. I get a message to call the office and when I respond, Brenda apologetically tells me that I need to reschedule my appointment for July 13 to the following week because, (get this one!) "Doctor Tokunaga already has too many appointments that day" What? I scheduled my upcoming appointment one year ago! Anyway, Brenda asks if I can come in the following week at the same time; not a big deal, right? Oh yeah; your appointment is at the Kuakini office, and with another doctor! I LOVE this mask!! I honestly hate wearing masks, but its just absolutely necessary in order to keep me, my family, and my community safe. It's a small price to pay to help ensure everyone's safety. Still, I've never enjoyed it and I always look forward to the moment I can take it off. Up to now, I've found masks to be uncomfortable to the point that it actually affects my mood - especially when wearing them for extended periods of time. These guys run a Cataract Mill, VA sent me there. Still cost me over $4000 to do my Cataracts. Surgery went well, pain from IV was excrutiating, Dr did adjust for second eye when I called him out for it. Bedside manner of Surgeon was nil. Came up to my preop bed and started to examine me without even saying hello. I went to the Kapahulu office. What a dump. Peeling paint, floors not cleaned in who knows how long, furniture in reception cracking and coming off, rust on some of the exam machines. Parking was junk. I would not reccomend them. read more

They have such a good selection of frames and a guy by the name of Alan helped me. He was very knowledgeable, and so patient as i wanted to try them all on. Lol. I was working on my car when a piece of metal flew in my eye. I was feeling some pain and was beginning to get worried when i called to see if they were even open during this pandemic. Luckily, they were. The receptionist was very nice and asked me a bunch of prescreening covid questions, she said i should come right away. I was able to be seen within in the hour. I was seen by Dr Tokunaga who was able to pluck out the piece of metal. He also prescribed me some drops to prevent infection. He explained everything and was very thorough. I am extremely near sighted and reached a point that it was unsafe to drive. One of my eyes was best corrected at 20/200 which is legally blind. Dr. Carlton Yuen noted that I had the longest eye ball he had ever seen. Yet after Dr. Yuen did cataract surgeries to both of my eyes I have 20/20 distant vision and 20/30 near vision! I don't need any contacts or glasses at all for driving or reading! Dr, Yuen is incredible. He does so many cataract surgeries that he keeps a vault of lens and knows how each manufacturer of lens and each type of lens will work with every individual eye. He also uses lasers to perfect the lens replacement and to reshape your cornea to eliminate any astigmatism which together with individualized transplanted lens gives you unbelievable vision distant and near. When Dr. Yuen planned my cataract surgeries it was like a football head coach designing every little detail of a play to get every inch of vision. I could not believe how clear, bright and colorful my vision was once the patch was removed the day after surgery! And the staff was so nice, supportive and efficient. Everyone was in place to examine, test, record, retest, re-examine to make sure everything will be done correctly. I only had a very mild headache after both surgeries. Otherwise the whole process was totally painless without any discomfort-no kidding! Needless to say I had an incredible experience replacing my cataracts from an incredible doctor and surgeon. I HIGHLY recommend Dr. Carlton Yuen to have your cataracts replaced. Everyone has to get it done at some point in their lives and why trust your eyesight with any doctor except a doctor with exceptional skills, experience, patience and creativity such as Dr. Yuen. read more

I really can't believe this place has 4.5 stars. There must be a lot of friends and family voting on here. But it took me the second really bad experience I had with these people to finally write a bad review, and I'm not a review writing person, good or bad. I will write reviews for a really good experience or a really bad one. This is a really bad one... I've been a patient w/AVC for I don't know, 10 years or so. I really only need an eye doctor to help me keep my eye prescriptions updated. The two kinds of doctors I personally have a hard time finding are eye doctors and dentists. My dentist has been helping me keep up the dental work but my eye doctor experiences haven't been the greatest. It's been bad enough now where I'm going to be looking for a new one because this company has been hiring people with the worst bedside manner I've ever experienced. I've been tracking this because I need corrective vision, and when you're dealing w/Medicaid provided glasses, these things don't last long because the glasses are very cheap. And every time I call whenever my glasses fall apart, I'm always dealing with someone who doesn't seem to care about my problem. I try to follow up on my current problem and the doctor's rep from this company laughs at me. I tell her that I'm trying to get an immediate fix to my eyeglasses problem and she laughs at me. When I call her out on it, I get a new person but I don't realize it until minutes later. I find out that this person is an office manager who has helped me before with broken glasses, but this woman before him, she told me her name was Diana or something. She freaking laughed at me because she thought my vision correction problem was funny. When I pointed it out to her, she just laughed harder. Somehow, ALOHA ASIAN VISION CONSULTANTS only hires people who think that people with corrective vision problems are funny to her. So what am I supposed to do here?? I need new glasses but Aloha Asian Vision Consultants only hires to people who are Asians only?? Am I not Asian enough to be treated with any kind of dignity?? read more

I thought I had a bad eye infection so I went to Urgent Care. After examination they gave me antibiotic drops for my eye. After two weeks of blurred vision my eyes were still red and oozing mucous. Finally told myself that I needed someone more knowledgeable. Saw Dr. Yuen and after his examination he told me that I had an eye allergy, not an infection. He prescribed me a different eye drop and my eyes responded well. He followed up by giving me an allergy test a month later. I am happy with the expert and thorough care I got from Dr. Yuen and should have gone to him from the start. Lesson learned. read more

The staff takes the time to explain what they are doing every step of the way when doing testings. So I have something called Ocular Surface Disease and Meibomian Gland Dysfunction which is a fancy way of saying I have severe dry eyes. I've done Restasis, Xiidra, punctal plugs, and tons and tons of eye drops. My eyes were always red and tired and irritated. I am sooo happy to finally have a solution for this problem. I had a LipiFlow Thermal Pulsation. It took only 12 minutes. And it was so easy and simple. Roberta prepped me and explained everything step by step and was so calming. She answered all of my questions and was very knowledgeable. And I'm so grateful that Dr. Yuen offered this treatment solution. My dry eyes was starting to affect me psychologically. Even though my body was not tired, because my eyes were always red and irritated and dry, it made me look and feel tired no matter how many eye drops I used. Unless you have lived with dry eyes for an extended amount of time, you really don't know how debilitating it can be. People always asked me if I was tired or sick because of my red or tired eyes. I scheduled an appointment to update my contact prescription. I had visited them before and had a good experience. I was told I would be seeing Dr. Tokunaga. When I arrived for my appointment, they were under the assumption I was there for a routine eye exam. I was told that the doctor was not in the building and that he doesn't do contact fittings (which was very strange since I was told my appointment was with Dr. Tokunaga). Extremely frustrating and disappointing experience. I wasn't able to get a new prescription. I'm not clear how this mix up happened especially since I have a patient history of getting contact lenses from them. read more

Dr. Yuen has been my eye doctor for 5 years now! He's very kind and thorough with his examinations. He does routine eye exams as well as medical diagnoses such as diabetic eye exams.. He's located in kapahulu at the old KC drive in and that place tends to be busy during the day. Luckily my husband and i see him later in the day when the parking is never full.. About 6 months or so ago, I thought I got pink eye or something cause all Friday night it was irritated and the next morning it was slightly pink so I called to see if they had any openings and even though I had to go out to their Aiea location it was worth it. Luckily it wasn't pink eye cause I was scheduled to fly to the neighbor island the following week and I didn't want to pass it to anyone especially my little cousin. I am writing this Yelp review in case there is anyone out there who is on the fence, either about visiting this practice or having cataract lens surgery. Let me start by saying Dr. Yuen and the staff here are phenomenal!! I was able to book an appointment easily, was seen almost immediately and was treated like family. Dr. Yuen discovered the reason my normally poor eyesight (that I was born with) was harder to correct this time around was due to cataracts. You guys, I'm 51!!! Cataracts are for "old people ". He explained to me what was needed, how to proceed and had my surgery scheduled, plus Covid testing scheduled all in one visit. They do each eye separately, and it all went down without a hitch. I have worn glasses since kindergarten, I have never gone a day of my life without glasses, UNTIL TODAY. I am beyond pleased with the procedure, and over the moon happy with Dr and staff. If my review helps anyone, please...do not hesitate to have this life altering surgery done by Dr. Yuen, it has made all the difference for me. First visit. Office staff gave me the wrong sized contact lens. No follow-up fitting appt was scheduled. Curious. Second visit. I had to call for an follow-up because the lens do not fit. Waited for a month for this "follow-up". Walked in. The staff did not know why I was there, though I had explained my dilemma during scheduling. The incompetency continues. In the office. Dr. Yuen was surprised there wasn't a follow-up, but told me I had to be billed for the visit because insurance doesn't cover 2 office visits in a year. What! BUT WHAT ABOUT MISTAKE MADE BY YOUR OFFICE? The patient pays? A point, may I add, made explicitly known. More to come. They sent me the wrong prescription after visit #2. I went in for my 6 month examination with Dr. Carlton Yuen at Aloha Vision Consultants Kapahulu location today. While everyone knows how highly I feel about Dr. Yuen and Dr.Tokunaga, I must also add that this is one of the most efficiently run offices that I have ever been in. The staff that checks you in and all of the schedulers and nurses are all top notch. Even during this Covid-19 times, this office feels so safe and secure and pleasant to visit. Dr. Yuen and Dr. Tokunaga and staff really make sure to keep their patients comfortable and protected which I really appreciate. Also so happy to say that it's been 5 years since Dr. Yuen performed cataract surgery on both my eyes and my vision is still crystal clear and still no correction needed. I'm so grateful to have Dr. Yuen and Dr. Tokunaga and associates caring for me, my family and friends eyes throughout the many years.
