In particular, Jon Portis Ophthalmologist is a popular, trusted and well-respected doctor. Fortunately, my piano student's mother is a doctor who referred me to Dr.Portis, so my husband Jeff is also likely to undergo cataract surgery with him. Today was our first visit, he did a lot of tests, and everything went smoothly with the guidance of the staff. Also, the doctor carefully listened to my husband's story and set up a treatment plan. I think it is very important for patients facing surgery to understand their condition, treatment options, risks and benefits. Dr. Portis did a good job of explaining these things. . Well, this doctor, apparently he is a professional photographer and many of his works are displayed in the waiting room. When I look at these wonderful works, I forget that it's a hospital! It was my first visit with a little nervousness, but I was able to spend time at a good pace and comfortably, so I felt like leaving the anxiety of the surgery to him with peace of mind. When my husband became his patient, I also decided to have him check my eyes every year as my ophthalmologist, and I made an appointment. Thanks to Dr. Portis I have supped at the Fountain of Youth. After my cataract surgery I can see better than at any other time in my life. Like most patients I was very anxious about the surgery. I was referred by a coworker to Jon Portis, MD over 30 years ago when I was seeking an eye doctor. As a social worker who worked closely with nurses and doctors, I am extremely discriminating about who I choose for my health care providers. I have always been pleased with Dr. Portis. Not only does he have impressive credentials, he really is super smart, he's kind (with that dry sense of humor I appreciate!), and he LISTENS! I've had my share of eye and other medical concerns over the years. He has always taken them seriously and never brushes me off. His office staff is always friendly and accommodating. Debbie does a great job fitting me with the latest in designer frames! I never have a problem contacting them like some doctor offices. Dr Jon Portis is thorough with the eye exam, a good listener, and had good suggestions regarding eye care. Although all together with the exams for any diseases, eye test and then the meeting with Dr Portis takes awhile, the personnel are patient and thorough. It is all well worth it. I had to get glasses and I was pleasantly surprised to find that I could meet with someone right then and there. I've been a patient of Dr. Jon Portis for many years and he's always given me excellent care and advice. When I had cataracts removed, I had the chance to have lenses put in so that I would no longer need to wear bi-focal glasses. Dr. Portis did the procedure for me and I'm so grateful because it went very well and I've had no issues resulting from the surgery. He's just a really great doc. Been seeing him since the late 90's and he just finished fixing my cataracts after having put up with all my anxiety and questions for weeks it seems! Did my wife's LASIK (turned out great) and managed to get me through my surgery with an amazing outcome. He went from "I wouldn't do your cataracts because it would be unethical as they still correct to 20-20" to "Cataract surgery is an 'elective surgery,' you can elect to go blind," in the space of a few years. I was terrified, but he got me through and I'm eternally grateful. He's cautious and ethical, very smart, and highly conscientious. And oh yeah, I think pretty nerdy. Who has ever seen a copy of "The American Philatelist" in a waiting room, and how many docs go to Cal Tech for their undergraduate degrees? Giving Dr. Jon M. Portis five stars for his skill and precision! I am 65 years old and recently had cataract issues with both eyes. Legally blind in one eye and not being able to drive at night made every day living cumbersome and limiting. Still, there was a huge fear factor of getting eye surgery. However, Dr. Portis's professionalism and reassuring demeanor convinced me that much of my sight could be restored and a reliance on contact lens could be done away with. This is my first Yelp review, but there is no doubt that 20/20 vision in my left eye for the first time in 47 years is worthy of a review. When my Optometrist started having problems correcting my vision completely with corrective lenses, I knew that with my bad eyes, it was time to find a good, preferably great Ophthalmologist. Fortunately, two good friends recommended Dr. Jon M. Portis. Dr. Portis quickly diagnosed cataracts in each eye and because of my retinal pathology, he also insisted I see a Retinal Specialist prior to him being able to do any cataract surgery. My Retinal Dr. agreed that there were multiple holes and one partial detachment that needed his care. Two retinal surgeries later, it was back to Dr. Portis to start dealing with the cataract that was blurring my vision in the left eye. For the first time in my life, the "E" at the top line of the eye chart, was the only line I could read. I was a bit scared at how bad my eyes had gotten. Fortunately, Dr. Portis, with his skilled, knowledgeable, informative and confident bed-side manner is here to help folks like me. Dr. Portis was very careful not to make any promises or raise my hopes due to the "complicated" nature of my case. After two rounds of visits and several measurements, Dr. Portis also recommended that I go with a single focal lens rather than some of the multi-focal products that I had read about and was interested in. As he put it, "we only have one chance to do this right" and with my eyes, some of the fancier lenses might become problematic over time.. I followed Dr. Portis' advice and recommendations to the letter. I chose a single focal lens that was focused on improving my distance vision, or any vision "beyond arms length." The day had finally arrived and after a couple of hours at his Surgical Suites, staffed with friendly, attentive nurses and an anesthesiologist, I was set to go. The actual cataract Sx only took about 25 minutes. Dr. Portis mentioned to me that once the cataract was removed, he had the only laser equipment in the state of HI that allowed him to take one final measurement before implanting the artificial lens. Based on this last minute measurement, Dr. Portis made the decision to change the lens size even a bit more prior to implantation. I have just finished my second follow-up appointment and needless to say, Dr. Portis, his staff, and myself are all delighted with the results. 20/20 and now my left eye is my "better" eye. WOW! Our vision is truly a gift and i am delighted that there are people out there like Dr. Jon Portis who have the skill and expertise to deal with problematic eyes such as mine. It is a treat to be able to wake up and see the world, through at least one eye, the eye that Dr. Portis has worked on and corrected! My heartfelt thanks to this Dr. and his staff. read more

I had been wearing glasses since I was in Kindergarten and I really wanted to get Lasik eye surgery. I was very hesitant because of the fear of what could go wrong. Many friends and colleagues kept encouraging me to do it. It took my boss, who is a surgeon, to finally convince me that it was safe and worth at least a consultation. He recommended Dr. Portis because he is very meticulous and will check your eyes to make sure you are a candidate for the surgery. I am 4 months post-surgery and have 20/20 vision in both eyes. We were so impressed with Dr. Portis and his team. We were traveling in Hawaii and my husband had an eye emergency. We were referred to Dr. Portis by the Queen's Hospital emergency room doctors. Dr. Portis was so great to fit us in the very next morning! From the moment we walked in the door, we were treated with kindness. Grace was so nice to us, and she was very patient answering our many questions...an amazing technician. Flo, at the reception desk, was very friendly and put us at ease right away. Dr. Portis was very thorough and explained things well...he really knows his stuff! He did a lot of tests on my husband's eyes, quickly assessed the problem, and came up with a solution. He gave my husband some special eye drops and medicine to use for a few days, and then he fit us in again for a follow-up appointment. It's a busy office, so we really appreciated being fit into the busy schedule...twice! We were so happy that the excellent care helped my husband's eyes and we were able to continue our Hawaiian vacation (with a promise to see our specialist in Canada right away when we returned home!). It was a blessing in disguise that my old ophthalmologist's office gave me a really hard time returning to their office even after 16 years of being a "regular" customer. I was conned into an eye exam by another eye doctor and my old OP's office said, "sorry, you transferred care to another physician so we can't take you back"...only they were defensive and rude. OK. No problem. I didn't have a beef with my old doctor but I didn't want to go back to a business that had that much drama anyway. I paid my bills, I showed up on time and never missed an appointment ; whatever beef the staff had with the doctor was none of my business...literally. First thing was trying to find another ophthalmologist - very difficult to do on this island. I did extensive research and called a bunch of offices. Long story short, nothing matched my criteria for an acceptable eye doc. This was my criteria for finding a specialist: 1) a SPECIALIST in eye diseases, especially when family members were suspect or have/had eye disease. 2) trained in special surgery and related to the eye diseases. 3) good patient ratings - Yelp didn't have any information on Dr. Portis so I went to Healthgrades.com. Not only did I look up patient satisfaction ratings, I checked out the whole gamut of information: years of experience, schooling, areas of expertise, surgery experience. 4) front desk staff - how do they treat you on the phone? In this case, great. No problems. A minor few ruffles early on with the phone ringing off the hook, holding for 2+ minutes, a bit of scrambling to correct insurance claims but other than that everyone was professional. And before I go any further, you cannot just make an appointment...you need to have a referral from your primary care physician first and your insurance needs to be covered by Dr. Portis' office ...just so you know. Dr. Portis and his staff were immaculate (front desk, optometrist, technicians, billing ). I am especially grateful for Dr. Portis' taking time to explain every aspect of the exam and the findings. I've never experienced that much one-on-one before. He showed me the screen, what he had found, what was to be expected and future expectations. He explained the tests, the parameters...every thing. If I had a question, he'd answer it in plain English and he did not cut corners. Dr. Portis' demeanor is very approachable and there are no airs about him (Harvard graduate too :-) Gone are the days of finding just any old doctor/dentist closer to town. Do your research as your eyes/ears/teeth are invaluable. You cannot replace what God has given you when you were born but you can find those that are most qualified to have your best interests at heart when you are trying to protect your precious assets that can never be replaced. read more

I have known Dr. Portis for a great portion of my life, trusting him to take care of my vision and eyes each year. When I have finally reached the point of frustration over having to put on glasses and contacts (which often caused discomfort), I inquired with Dr. Portis if LASIK was for me. My wife spoke with the staff twice before she finally saw the doctor. "Holy Cra@, I can see." I've said this twice in my life. The first about 15 years ago at Kahala Mall, when I jokingly put my friend's glasses on and my eyes came into focus. I didn't know I needed glasses until then. The second time, was when i woke up the next day after my LASIK surgery performed by Dr Portis, three weeks ago, looking at my clock across the room. So on the day of surgery, you go to the LASIK center in the First Insurance building, and you check in and they give you a Valium to calm your nerves. (Though I felt nothing) The pre-op nurse gives you some instructions and some heads up as to what is going to happen when you're under the "laser." Pretty comforting. I was so relaxed... K maybe that WAS the valium. Anyway, the whole procedure takes less than twenty minutes or so. No pain, just a little eye discomfort. But right after, i could already tell that my sight was better. I would highly recommend Dr Portis for your LASIK surgery. It was in and out. No problems, even with my small eyes. Yes, it does cost some big bucks, but I figure it'll pay for itself in about 8 years, not having to pay for contacts or solution. It's also worth it when I fall asleep on the couch and I wake up to take my contacts out and I realize... NO CONTACTS! WooHoo Even better, for the last three weeks playing softball, my hitting has been craycray. (Sorry, it's what the kids are saying these days) Im batting almost 1000! Yay! My first Yelp review! I have been a patient of Dr. Portis for around 20 years. I started wearing glasses in high school and eventually I worked up the courage to use contacts. I was interested in getting LASIK, but I kept putting it off. Recently I found myself with an expired prescription, low supply of contacts and scratched up glasses. I immediately booked an appointment to find out if LASIK was a good choice for me. The consultation process was similar to an eye exam with a few extra tests to see if you're a good candidate. I was beyond thrilled to hear that I was a good candidate and I chose to go forward with the surgery. Dr. Portis took his time to go over everything with me. On surgery day I was given a Valium to help me relax, but I was still nervous. Dr. Portis calmly talked me through the entire surgery step by step. Nothing was a surprise and there was zero pain. The surgery only took a few minutes and when I sat up I could clearly see the clock on the wall. The next day I went to my post op appointment and I was surprised to hear I was now able to see 20/15! It was been 5 weeks and I still have better than perfect vision and I'm still in awe everyday at how clearly I can see the world. I'm loving my new perceptive! read more

Dr. Portis is an excellent choice for your eye care needs. I picked him knowing I wanted to explore lasik and his staff and him were very helpful with getting me through the evaluation process. After talking with Dr. Portis we decided PRK surgery was the best option for my eyes. When you research PRK it sounds scary but Dr. Portis's calm knowledgeable demeanor helped calm me down. I don't write a lot of Yelp reviews but this one is a must! I've worn glasses since about 6th grade and switched to contacts in high school. LASIK was always a thought but I never fully considered it bc it's scary to think that someone will be shooting a laser at your eyes (and all of the horrible things that could go wrong of course). I started a new job and my contacts were becoming incredibly dry and wearing glasses during work was difficult. So I did some research, found Dr. Portis and decided to see him for a consultation for LASIK and luckily I was a good candidate. On the day of the consultation he described the entire procedure, and answered all of my questions/concerns. So, I set my procedure date for 4/20. Prior to the procedure, I was given a Valium to stay relaxed throughout the procedure. While in the room, Dr Portis went over every step with me and talked me through the entire procedure. After the procedure, I was able to somewhat see the clock on the wall and read the time. They tell you that it may be a little blurry but it will get better after resting your eyes. The next day was my follow up and I was pretty impressed how clear my vision was. I drove myself to my follow up appointment the next day and Dr Portis said my eyes looked like they were already healing nicely. 7/17/: I just had my three month follow up and I am seeing 20/15 in both eyes! I'm very happy that I decided to do this procedure and glad that I chose Dr Portis bc it was a success. I don't worry about the hassle that glasses or contacts gave me. If I could give Dr. Jon Portis and his staff a 10-star rating, I would. I was recommended to Dr. Portis by my primary care physician because I needed a full-lens replacement surgery in both eyes due to narrow angle glaucoma. I have worn glasses full time since the age of seven because I was farsighted with an extremely bad astigmatism. I was excited to learn about the many lens choices that could correct my vision forever. My goal was to be eyeglass free for most everything. I chose Symphony tonic multi-focal lenses. These lenses are worth the extra money because they have completely changed my life. I now see 20/20 in each eye and no longer have astigmatism! My eyesight is so fantastic that I can see clearly at a distance as well as read fine print. I no longer need specs to read my iPhone or for driving and I can read a computer screen literally across the room. A word about the surgery. It is virtually painless. You are given intravenous drugs to relax you and you stay awake through the procedure. There are no side effects from the drugs, which wear off quite quickly. The surgery itself takes about 15 minutes. You sleep with a see-through eye covering for about 2 weeks but you do not wear it during the day. The day after the surgery, you go back to see Dr. Portis. The most miraculous thing for me was being able to see 20/20 less than 24 hours after the surgery A word about Dr. Portis, his office, office staff, and surgery staff. Dr. Portis is a caring physician and skilled surgeon. He made me feel confident that the surgery would be successful. He responded quickly when I had a question or concern both before and after the surgery. He has the latest diagnostic equipment in his office and latest surgical equipment in the operating room. His office staff is extremely well-trained and helpful. His surgical team was also amazing and worked to make me feel calm and comfortable both pre and post op. Dr. Portis has been my doctor for over twenty years and it is always comforting to know that you have an extremely competent doctor who understands your needs not to mention complete confidence in his surgical abilities when you decide to have cataract surgery. After four years of putting off the surgery (I had early onset cataracts and am now 66 years old), I finally decided that it was time to have it done. We decided on a plan for the new lenses which Dr. Portis suggested for my lifestyle. It was performed by Dr. Portis at the Surgical Suites LLC (excellent and professional staff). I just got LASIK done with Dr. Portis and it is truly life changing. I went from 20/600 to 20/15 with no pain and no down time. I have been wearing contacts for about 20 years so I was very used to them. I felt I could see fine with them and had become accustom to the minor inconvenience of wearing them, storing them, taking them on/off and traveling with them, etc. I did dream of getting LASIK because I had heard great things, but I didn't feel any immediate need to spend the money or take the risk of a bad result. However, after my daughter was born, 20/600 vision at night when my contacts were out was a hazard. My vision was so bad if took my glasses off I could barely find them. Kids get up a lot in the middle of the night so its not helpful to wake up blind. Plus, any inconvenience that could be removed was now welcomed. I figured if there were a time do it, now would be the most helpful. So I consulted with Dr. Portis who has been my eye doc for many many years and decided to go for it. The procedure was quick and painless and recovery is so easy there is literally no downtime. I was definitely a bit freaked out prior to surgery, but now I could not recommend it highly enough. It is AMAZING! It is not like the eye sight I had with my contacts, it is so much better. Even though I could see fine with contacts, that was like watching regular TV and after LASIK it is like watching life in High Definition. Vision is crisp and clear. The surgery was done at Aloha Laser Center. The staff there are very friendly, professional and informative. They gave me a valium which I was hesitant to take because I am fairly holistic and generally don't take any meds. But I took it in this case because like anyone thinking of LASIK (probably you if you are reading this) the idea of cutting my eye open was creating some tension. My body felt more relaxed, but my brain was still actively creating horrifying scenarios in my head. Anyways, I am sure the staff is very used to this and calmly answered my steady stream of irrational questions like, "What if i sneeze while the laser is working on my eye?" After a pep talk in a room with calm soothing music it was show time. Dr. Portis talked me through the whole thing and made sure I was doing ok. The first portion of the surgery was the most uncomfortable part because they put a plastic ring in my eye and pressed down firmly. And even though my eye was totally numb it was just weird and awkward to have something on my eyeball knowing that an incision is being made. However, that part lasted for what I felt to be less than a minute for each eye so not enough time to become truly unsettling. Then the bed moved me under the other laser and I stared at some lights for a very brief moment. The laser created a strange smell, but they told me beforehand to expect that. Then it is over. Voila! I could see. I don't even think the surgery lasted more than 10 minute total. I still cannot believe how fast and easy it all was. No regrets, I encourage everyone who has really bad vision to do it. Truth be told, no matter how many people told me that it would be quick and easy....I was so scared to get Lasik! But, the fact that I now needed both glasses and contacts made me put the fear aside. I was referred to Dr. Portis by a great friend who also happens to be a MD. Dr. Portis took the time to find the precise prescription...it was definitely worth the extra visits. He clearly explained every step of the procedure and the after care. Now a little over a week past Lasik and I could not be happier with my decision. I did not hesitate at all when cataract surgery was recommended by Dr. Portis. The necessity and benefits of resolving my vision issues, plus the confidence I had of Dr. Portis' expertise far outweighed any concerns I had, PRE SURGERY AND CHOICE After consultations and some reading up, I opted to have the LensSx laser method, and the Active Focus multi focal lens. The laser method has many positives, being the latest in medical technology. Having a muti-focal lens certainly makes a difference in how you see and adapt, similar to wearing multi focal /progressive eyeglasses. Now, these options will cost you out--of -pocket. Insurance pays for the basics. The decision making is a no - brainer. Why would one go with a lower quality option, when your expectation should be getting the best outcome possible. This is something you keep for the rest of your life, your vision. It's a winning investment in yourself. So, get the best, it's affordable if you put it in perspective. The pre-surgery visits were all planned out efficiently by the staff. Surgery itself was performed at the Surgical Suites. I must say the team there were well prepared and took care of me professionally and with precision. Obviously I was anxious, but the medical team and the Anesthesiologist were very reassuring and capable The actual surgical procedure by Dr. Portis. took around 15 minutes. A pain- free in and out experience. In retrospect, a visit to the dentist would be more traumatic. POST SURGERY Number one tip, follow all instructions given. The next day , a check up was scheduled, All normal and clear vision was evident I did the second eye one week after and went through the same process. After ten days, my vision tested at 20/20 Far and mid distance sight was just amazing, and the fact that I could ditch my eyeglasses after 60 years. Near vision for reading takes a while to improve and you have to be patient. After 5 weeks, I can read phone text, menus and package ingredients at 16 inches, which is table top distance. If I did not opt for tthe multi-focals, I would need reading glasses. All concerns and questions were answered and dealt with promptly by Dr. Portis. He returns calls and brings you in immediately when needed. He is clearly a highly experienced ophthalmologist and surgeon. I think he's very results oriented, as we say in the business world. And he's got the team support. The final outcome of being eyeglass- free, and having excellent visual acuity, is just great. And it's really the bonus for fixing your cataracts. I had LASIK about a month ago and it's awesome! The procedure took about 20-30 minutes and was almost painless (you'll feel pressure when they create the flap). But, it was worth it! If you're tired of wearing contacts or glasses then you should definitely get LASIK! read more

Dr. Portis restored my right eye vision in a procedure called, Posterior Capsulotomy, on 24 April 2015. I had cataract surgery on the eye in 2012, and over time, vision in that eye became increasingly blurred. At a check-up by Dr. Portis, in August of 2014, I was informed that the opacification of the capsule holding the artificial lens is not uncommon among cataract patients and that a simple, two-minute laser procedure would completely correct the problem. Being skeptical, I told the good doctor I'd think about it. Of course, the clouding grew worse and by the time I was again examined in preparation for the Capsulotomy, vision in that eye was down to 20-400--legally blind! My fear that the procedure might involve a lengthy recovery time was the main reason I waited. I admit it was hard to believe the procedure was as simple and painless as described. I thought the doctor must be painting a too-rosy picture. In early April, virtually blind in that eye, a "nothing to lose" mentality made it easy to schedule an appointment. Wow! What a dummy I was to wait! The procedure was even easier than described, and just as quick. An assistant dilated the eye and after it took affect, I was led into another room, seated in your basic exam chair and given two additional types of eye drops. The actual laser device was in this room, though to me, it appeared to be much like normal eye exam apparatus. After the drops had time to work, Dr. Portis came in. I moved into the chair in front of the laser and placed my chin in a cup similar to the normal exam room. He aimed the laser, fired it several times and it was over. A staff member rinsed out my eye, dried it and I was cleared to go. No bandage, no eye patch...nothing. By the way...Each time the laser was triggered by Dr. Portis, it made a non-scary, not-loud snapping sound. So, the experience could not have been better. My confidence in Dr. Portis' training, experience and skill is the highest possible. His "bedside manner" is excellent, too. I would most strongly recommend him to anyone who desires the best available care for their eyes and the utmost in professionalism, experience and training from their doctor. Finally, what a wonderful walk home! I could once again see the complete sky and the blue looked so intense. With my peripheral vision and depth perception restored, too, it's no wonder I had a grin on my face all the way home. Greenpeace and Whole Foods would approve of this eye doctor! Dr. Portis has been my eye doctor for over a decade. I saw him yesterday and was impressed by a few things: 1. He's never been one to push expensive prescription remedies. Here's an example: Dry eyes? "Try fish oil supplements. Here's the research to support it...." 2. Not only did we discuss fish oil supplements (which I've been taking for two years and have helped immensely with dry eyes), but he made the distinction between buying the ester form (sold in most formulas) vs the trigylceride form (only two brands, PRN and Nordic Naturals). 3. Taking it one step further, he also discussed responsible sourcing of the fish oil. Because it isn't just about his patients' health, it's also about maintaining a healthy ecosystem and not depleting our precious ocean resources. His office staff that I interacted with yesterday were all perfectly efficient, empathic, upbeat and professional. His office is clean with good magazines to peruse for the 15 seconds before you're called in. In summary, if you're looking for good care from someone who keeps up to date with research in the field AND looks for nutritional rather than pharmaceutical fixes AND cares deeply about the environment, wanting to leave the planet a decent place for our future generations...this is the office to make an appointment with. read more

I had LASIK surgery from Dr. Portis one month ago. At my follow-up visit the day after surgery my vision improved from being legally blind (I could only see up to 4 inches in front of my face without glasses or contacts) to seeing clearly with 20/20 vision. Today, at my 1 month follow-up visit I learned that I now have 20/15 vision in each eye. I no longer need to fumble for glasses in the middle of the night to look at the alarm clock, worry about losing my contacts while swimming in the ocean or pool, packing contacts and glasses when traveling, and budgeting for yearly contacts. One word: MIRACLE! I am now almost 2 months out from LASIK and it has been a life changing miracle. I had pretty bad vision before so had contacts/glasses. I had worn glasses since 5th grade so it's just been my world. Dr. Portis came highly recommended from a co-worker and he is really great. Went in for an annual exam and we discussed the option of LASIK. They ran all the tests to determine that I would be a good candidate; so I decided to do it. First, I want to say that the office staff are all very friendly and attentive. Dr. Portis is very straight forward by he explains everything thoroughly. Day of surgery I did get a little nervous before arriving for my appointment (I mean, it's my EYES! I had a moment of "OMG what am I about to do?!") BUT the Aloha Surgery Center was awesome - front office staff very friendly and accommodating. They explained everything that was about to happen, which was incredibly helpful so I knew what to expect. They took me back for the procedure and it was literally over in 15 minutes. Dr. Portis talked me through it the entire time (also extremely reassuring), and right after it was over I sat up and could see the clock on the wall (albeit, it was a little milky but I could read it!) I then looked over and could see my hubby waiting for me in the waiting area! WOW. Dr. Portis was really clear that it's important to get home and get to sleep before the numbing drops wore off; they aren't kidding. i had some tearing and discomfort, but feel asleep for like 4.5 hours and when I woke up...i could see perfectly. Went in for post-op to find I'm 20/20. Many weeks later, I'm still doing great. So yes, it's a little costly, but it's your vision. No more sticking my finger in my eye twice a day with the contacts or wearing them too long or sleeping in them; no more contact solution; no more prescription refills; no more glasses; no more fuss with not being able to see. The cost covers the pre-op visit; surgery obviously, and all post-op visits. If you do it - and I promise that you will not regret it! - stay with the drops that Dr. Portis gives. Follow his instructions all the way through the process, and you'll be in great shape. Dr. Portis is really the best - he's very experienced and works with an amazing staff (and the best laser in Hawaii). I highly recommend. Yay, I can see! I had LASIK done on 6/23/16 and the results are amazing! A little back story here: I was wearing glasses since I was in grade school (about 1st grade) and my vision was bad. I mean really, really, bad. Before the fancy glasses we have now, I wore the ones with the thick frames AND lens. Dr. Portis is truely amazing! He goes over everything you need to know from start to finish. I was a little apprehensive walking into this even up to the "L" day. But Dr. Portis put me at ease, walking me through every step of the procedure. The procedure itself didn't take very long and you have a little discomfort, however, Tylenol and a nap will help with that. I am so amazed even after 2 weeks. Heh, I still reach for my glasses when I wake up in the morning and try to lift the frame from my nose at times. Old habits are hard to break, I guess. =) Overall, this was the best decision for me. Loving Lasik!! Had Lasik done last week Thursday and went from 20/650 to 20/20 in just 15 minutes. 4 weeks of Restasis to prevent the dry eye that is anticipated with the procedure, 2 weeks of glasses (probably the hardest part) and then two Valium later I was waking up with perfect vision. Despite being rather squeamish about my eyes, my vision was finally stable and my window to reading glasses was looming. I made the mistake of watching the procedure being done on the person ahead of me, which was morbidly fascinating but not good for my eyeball phobia. The reality was about 15 minutes of pressure on my eyeball that was 4/10 at the worst and then just focusing on the green and red blinky lights. When I sat up I could read the time on the clock! The follow up care included antibiotic and steroid drops in my eye four times a day for a week, in addition to the Restasis twice a day and Systane Ultra drops as needed. I had a very mild foreign body sensation in just my left eye for 6 days, now completely gone along with the dryness. Some mornings when I wake up I have a split second of panic that I left my contact lenses in. Then I realize that my life has been permanently changed for the better. read more
