OMG! The food here is soooo bomb. We tried the pork chops, the turkey chops, dressing, Mac and cheese, yams, potato salad, and the lemon cake. Not one complaint here. I only wish they had a location somewhere on the Westside, so I could go more often

Mrs Alma, you did it for me, momma. I'm from the south atlanta, to be exact, my parents from Tennessee deeply rooted, but babyyyyyyy let me tell you, you took me back home with this one. Everything I ordered was too perfect, even the stove top homemade banana pudding. My mother normally made hers in the oven, but that stove top is hitting. Your ambiance is beautiful and welcoming. Everyone was friendly, especially the young man at the front counter, and the young lady. Continue striving for excellence and serving the community. Great Establishment for sure! Didn't care for it. The food is bland. The Mac was cheese less. The cabbage was almost clear and not for me. The wings were missing a piece, the cornbread tasted like it was once frozen and reheated and honestly this whole dinner at this quick serve restaurant ("QSR") was just not worth it. The attitude of the owners daughter was terrible. No personality. My companion ordered peach cobbler which is served cold. He requested it to be warmed. They refused. He wanted it warmed in a non plastic container. This peach cobbler was $9. She offered to heat it up but charge $1 for the box. Hahahahah! We just paid $60+ for lackluster food and are insulted by a $1 extra to warm up the dessert. He returned it. She sent it back in a bag by her cashier who said nothing when she put it on the table next to us. He asked her to please take it and refund it. The owners daughter refused. He politely advised that by law she had to refund it. She finally did. I would NEVER return here again. NEVER. UPDATE: To the owner: You did come out front to rearrange the desserts and we did interact and you were unpleasant. No smile. No hello. You should stay in the kitchen. We should have left but his order was already placed. I prefer to patronize businesses represented by owners who have grace and are happy to have customers. We were highly excited to try your place. We regret adding any revenue to your business. It's an experience we are happy to forget. Based upon your disgraceful response, you confirmed every word in my review and how awful your attitude is towards people keep your business afloat.

The place itself was very well-maintained, clean, well decorated, and inviting. A group of us went there and ordered their lunch specials, which we found to be a bit pricey considering the portion size. We ordered the chicken wing lunch special, and was very disappointed when we were not given the whole wing...the drumsticks part of the wing was cut off of every piece...maybe because it was the lunch special? The service was okay...a lot of yelling going on when calling orders out to the kitchen. What I thought was a bit much was when some lady came out of the kitchen to yell at a customer to close the front door, because she doesn't feel like chasing flies! While understandable, there could have been a better way for her to ask the customer to close the door. Lastly, they made it very clear to clean up after yourself, as there was no table service available. Updated review: Based on the owner's response, she's correct! We should've gone across the parking lot to patronize Popeyes. Seeing that the pork chops were half cooked, the cornbread was dry and crumbly, and the Mac and cheese bland. I'd gladly pay for a big box at Popeyes then eat here again!

Super cute place. The decor is cozy. Dine in only available until lunchtime and they close at 5pm which is painful. Food was over all good. The fried catfish HELLA GOOD. Wasn't a fan of the side dishes but that spoon fruit lemonade was delicious. Service was great, staff friendly and food received in a timely manner. I will definitely revisit if I'm working too late.

I was in the area and had Alma's bookmarked on places to try. I'm glad I stopped by. Upon entry the decor was so modern and welcoming. It was very clean and the ventilation system was doing a great job I didn't smell anything frying. I got the catfish mac n cheese greens and corn bread muffin. Everything was full of flavor, seasoned and cooked just right. The customer service was even better. I totally loved my Alma's Place experience.

I wanted to love this place. $43 for oxtails at "market price " is obtuse. The three sides, macaroni & cheese (bland), yams (tasted like canned) and greens (full of stems), could have earned another star. In fairness, the portions were decent. I had enough for the next day. The flavor didn't really come through.

12/14/17 Breakfast was good and flavorful. The quantity was too much to eat in one setting for me (turkey chops, potatoes, eggs & biscuit). The staff is so welcoming and kind; they make you feel like your patronage is appreciated. There are no other restaurants in the surrounding areas (to match) with there sincere and heartfelt customer service. Plus their dining area is clean, roomy and pleasantly decorated compared to the soul food spots in Carson, Gardena & Paramount. Please try it!!! read more

their wings corn bread yams and mac is a go to plate! I tried their fried fish as well really tasty and perfectly seasoned. Also if they have the strawberry shortcake cheesecake try it! First timer, I stopped by a few days ago after reading reviews and I loved it. I've only had the fried chicken special. Yet definitely returning to try the cat fish plate and their peach cobbler. You must try, if you dont live in the area it is worth the drive. By the way Ms.Alma will make you feel at home, a very positive atmosphere for my visit. read more

Moment I walked in I was greeted thats always nice you are recognized. It was myself,husband and kids. We just had missed breakfast. Which was a bomber but, I was craving waffles. That was my fault I arrived at 11:10am. It ends at 10:30am. Everyone meaning cashier and owner Alma were helpful with menu choices. I sure was distracted by the desert display. So many yummy choices. My girls ordered catfish nuggets,husband got coconut shrimp,and wings ,and I got fried pork chops. All of the food was amazing and finger licking good. I was so fulp i got german chocolate and banana pudding cheesecake. Yup i said banana pudding chessecake. It was Breath taking of flavor and not to sweet. I will for sure be a returning customer. I've been wanting to try this restaurant for months and finally stopped in for lunch with my co-worker. I had the turkey chop; which was seasoned and cooked well. I had the greens; loved the fact they were not overcooked again seasoned well with a hint of smokey flavor. The mac n cheese was creamy and delicious, could tell several types of cheese were used including mild and sharp cheddar. The only negative; I wanted more food... lol! To top the meal off Alma herself sat down with me and my co-worker to chat while we ate lunch. Overall the food was flavorful and cooked with love and the service was attentive. Instead of traveling to Inglewood to get Soul Food I will be returning to Alma's. I'm telling my family and friends Alma's is the place to go for good a Soul Food in Compton. read more

This is my favorite restaurant in the world!!!!! It's has such a homie vibes, everyone that works there are so kind and friendly I haven't even mentioned the amazing service food taste like heaven on earth you can feel the love with every bit. 5 stars because everything is delicious. That being said .....don't get your mouth set on anything because they may or may not have any left. I won't say more..... starting form the top the mac and cheese is slap ur momma mac and cheese good , real cheese butter and salt! The greens ...delicious , seasoned and made with Turkey! Yam tasty and sweet! Ending with desert ofcourse...how after Turkey chop 5 stars ,catfish 5 stars , wings 5 stars I don't know but we did and the girl scouts cheesecake was excellent! read more

Had the shrimp and grits, and it was pretty good. The staff was very gracious and seemed like it was Black owned business. Gave them 4 stars cuz its not the bomb, but would come back and try other dishes when I'm in Compton. read more

Yesterday, my sister treated our mom, a family friend, and myself to lunch at Alma's Cookies & Company restaurant. They had a special Mother's Day celebration. We had a wonderful time. Live music provided by The Soul Brothers Band. They covered Bobby Blue Bland, Bobby Womack, Frankie Beverly & Maze to name a few. I really enjoyed their music. The food was outstanding!!! I can never get enough of the pasta salad. This was the first time ever I had the fried fish, delicious!!! Also was the chicken breast in mushroom sauce, and my new favorite ...meatballs, yum, yum!!! Oh, don't let me forget the desserts, cherry cheese cake, banana pudding, and the cupcakes which melted in my mouth, all delicious! Banana pudding cheese cake is always a must have to take home for me, but I had pass on it yesterday because I was too full. This restaurant has a friendly "down home" atmosphere. The food is great and staff make you feel right at home. I would have written a post yesterday, but I took a really long, long nap (more like I was in coma) after I got home from eating all that good food. read more

When I visited this shop last week, with my sister some guy saw us and literally was avoiding us. I waited for 10 minutes to have my order taken. He wasn't even enthusiastic. When I paid for my food and left the Store he didn't even give me the correct change and I was too lazy to go back. The chicken and waffles were good, Really.... I just didn't like the service. The decor was so cute it felt like being in your grandma'a kitchen. We are very picky when it comes to soul food. But the catfish and fried chicken was on point. We weren't too fond of the waffles or the mac and cheese. And the greens weren't amazing but they weren't bad either. Make sure to bring cash because your card is charged $2.00, which is a bummer. The desserts are a-little on the pricey side, so I didn't get to try any this time. read more

Have been looking at this place on yelp for awhile, Tried to ask my friend where was it but had no idea. Well took a drive on 10/14/2017 and we found it. Customer service was excellent. Prices were reasonable. Portions were also good. Food was really good. We took the peach cobbler and banana pudding to go. I don't know why it's taken so long to write a review. I've known about Alma's for over two years now and typically order from here for work potlucks but this year I brought some yummies home for our thanksgiving dinner. First, let me start off by saying that when you walk in, you're greeted with a hug, you're treated like family. Second, THE FOOD!!! Corina puts so much love into her cooking and you can see and TASTE it! I cannot express how amazingly delicious everything is! I've tried almost everything here, and nothing has ever disappointed! Beyond words, beyond measure, this will be the best comfort food you'll ever try. Do not hesitate to stop by. You can't beat the food, the atmosphere, and the love you get when you eat at Alma's. This place was awesome and goodness. I had chicken wings, greens and yams. The chicken was nice and crispy not hard crispy and the yams and greens were perfect to taste. Our small group met at Alma's for breakfast and had a great time. The menu had many of the usual items like pancakes and eggs as well as others that might be called Southern comfort food or soul food. Annie and I shared some of each other's selections. I took some cake home for dessert. The place is relatively small and the food is ordered at the counter to either take out or eat there. Alma is the cook and she made it a point to come out to meet us and join the conversation. The atmosphere was welcoming, friendly, and relaxed. This was a good place for our weekend brunch. read more

This food is to die for! I ordered the greens, mac n cheese, and catfish. We wanted to order the oxtails but they were sold out (which made sense because we came late on a Sunday). Either way the food is DELICIOUS! I also love that it is family owned and black owned. I will continue to support this business especially since their food and service is stellar and I think it is one of very few soul food places in Compton. read more

Wow. The most amazing place and owner Alma. A staple of the community offers the best food anywhere. The catfish pork chops and fried chicken are amazingly authentic. The Mac n cheese and greens are no joke. Try her sweets as well the best. She has Sunday brunch and live entertainment. Most importantly she is an amazing person who cares about the community she serves and her family is involved with the business as well. read more

She also attended culinary school to further her education in food service, and has a dedication to her customers that is unmatchable. She has catered for over 20 years, and finally has established a home for she and her mother Alma's first restaurant in the great city of Compton, with southern hospitality at the forefront. Alma, our namesake began cooking at an early age and put into effect southern techniques she learned from her mother Annie and older sister Betty Jean who both were awesome cooks from Arkansas. Alma in turn shared what she learned with her 2 daughters, Yvonda and Corina. The baby girl watched her mom prepare food and desserts and was always intrigued as a very small child by what was done in the kitchen. From there grew a fascination that has grown into a career. Although this is my first review of Alma's, I dined on the at the Grand Opening and several other times. Each and every visit, the food has always exceeded my expectations. So far I've tried the Fried Catfish, Oxtails, Pan Seared Catfish, and Fried Chicken. The side dish offerings include expertly prepared options including Candied Yams, Black Eyed Peas, Green Beans, Mac and Cheese, and Cornbread Dressing. The dessert menu is to die for!!! Too many to name. This family owned and operated eatery in the City of Compton is situated across the street from the Compton Courthouse, City Hall, and Sheriffs Station on the corner of Acacia and Compton Blvds. It shares a parking lot with Popeye's Chicken in a strip mall. Parking is tight sometimes depending on the time of day. The eclectic decor and immaculate dining room feels very homie. Alma's also has a full catering menu and can easily feed large crowds of 300-500 guests for events. Free beverages and water are a available with a Yelp check in. Food has no flavor, no seasoning. Customer service sucks, don't try to order your food over the phone because they don't allow it. Which means you have to drive there and wait in the roach infested restaurant forever until your food is ready. Not to mention that half the food on the menu is not even available. Everyone loves "Not your mamma kitchen" which is a few blocks down Compton Blvd. I figured I give Almas a try, but never again will I walk into Almas. Don't waste your money. Go to Not your mammas kitchen. Waaaayyy better!!!! PS. If your unhappy with this disgusting Fabuloso smelling place, don't write a review. Great customer service, not to intrusive, just good at making the customers feel appreciated. The food was yummy, the dessert are amazing, I have a big sweet tooth, so my favorite is the strawberry short cake! Chicken, crunchy yummy, salmon to salty, yet still edible, :) Yams yummy, greens yummy, Mac & Cheese , yummy! I hope this restaurant continue to thrive, and keep being amazing! The food was amazing, I had the fried catfish with French fries, a side of macaroni and cheese and the fried Turkey chops because I couldn't decide. Everything was cooked to perfection, the seasoning is so flavorable, I suggested the bottle and sell it as an item on their menu, especially the catfish seasoning. The only negative is they need to print more menus, they had only one to review and order from so we had to wait and pass it around, this is tacky. Great food, period. This is a Compton staple, and it is right across from the courthouse. I have tried the breakfast sandwich, chicken and waffles, fried chicken plate, greens, green beans, mac, cheese cake, peach cobbler, sweet potato pie AND cheesecake, and it is all bomb. I hope to try everything on the menu because it never disappoints. Alma is lovely, and so is her staff. This is comfort food at it's finest. I had Alma's chicken and waffles for breakfast ($7.99). It was amazing! The chicken was flavorful with the right amount of crunch and the waffles were Delicious! You will not need to add syrup. I had the pleasure of meeting Ms Alma and Corina, today. Very pleasant friendly people made me feel right at home like going to my granny's house for some down home soul cooking. cant wait to taste that banana pudding cheese cake. everything I had was good. First time going to this place. Food and desserts were excellent. It was a soul food restaurant. I got the smothered turkey chops, rice and greens. They had this drink called peach cobbler tea that was excellent. The fried chicken looked great. Will have to go back for that. I had a slice of coconut, pecan cake, great. read more
