As far as classic dress shoes go, Allen Edmonds always leads the pack in terms of style selection, customer service, timelessness and size availability. If you have a wider foot, this is the place to go, as they offer a range of width options for each style of shoe. I had a great experience at this location, and John did an amazing job solving a tough situation for me. I had just moved to the city and started a new job, and only had one pair of AE dress shoes that were getting eaten alive by the NY sidewalks. I came in search of a more comfortable dress shoe for walking around the city, and Stan recommended a great option, while John recognized the wear and sent off my shoes to be recrafted and bolstered for the sidewalks. I was able to order the new shoes in the width I needed, and quickly picked them up over lunch, but after a day of walking around, realized they didn't fit. I came back in, and John helped with shoe inserts, which unfortunately still weren't enough. Even after a few more days of wear, John was able to get me in a new pair in the right size, resolving a stressful situation where none of my work shoes fit properly. I recently became a customer here at the 55th and Madison location. It's always a great experience. They just renovated the store and it's amazing. These shoes are called the "gateway drug to higher end shoes". Honestly, they're a great value and they're definitely addictive. That being said, my sales person was the very lovely Reesa. Reesa is very good at what she does. She touched my soul. I wound up in AE because I'm changing my style up. When they sized me on the Brannock device, I was surprised to find out I've been wearing the wrong size for so many years. She sized me up and let me try on a bunch of different shoes. She also gave me a ton of shoe related advice and handled an exchange for me with no problems. She's my shoe lady for life and AE is my new brand. If you have a foot of any width other than the middle of the road "D", then you should go get sized and spend the extra coin for some quality kicks that actually fit. These shoes are Goodyear welted. Wanna know what that is? Go to their site. It means a really well constructed shoe or boot. I'm a triple E and they have those sizes in stock. I've been some few times to this store and keep coming back. Why? Service is terrific. I like the shoes too, of course. However, shoes can be bought many places, but good service is not mandatory everywhere. At the Madison Avenue store, I feel the employees are literally walking an extra mile for the customers. Allen Edmonds makes some really nice, baller shoes. Their shoes add class to any outfit, especially the shoes with embrocation. The staff tends to have the UES snootiness, and seem to be more than willing to help clientele that dress like they have lots of cash. For a better level of service, hit up the Rockefeller Center store. They are much friendlier down there. P.S. Be prepared to spend $$$$. These shoes are an investment, and if they are well taken care of, the shoes should last a lifetime. read more

I shopped at two high end stores yesterday to buy my son a suit and shoes for graduation. I got him measured at Black Lapel for a suit to fit his athletic shoulders and legs. The customer service was exceptional every step of the way. We then walked to Allen-Edmonds to find wide dress shoes and the contrast was painfully obvious. As we walked in one of the sales people cough/commented, "mama's boy." How do you recover from that? My years in retail taught me to greet every customer with a smile within 30 seconds. Has that changed? You never know who is there to shop and who is there to browse. How many parents send their 17 year olds to buy $400 dollar shoes? Is that really a thing? We bought shoes because they were needed. My intention was to buy two, we didn't. They carry a EE leather cap toe shoe that seems like good quality, however, we were not able to walk away with shoes in hand. I hope they arrive in time for the event. I won't go back to this location on Madison and 55th. read more

Very surprised by the lowly rated reviews here. My first time at this location, but a frequent Allen Edmonds customer. I was in the area after picking up a new suit and decided to step in and check out the Rediscover America sale here. The location itself was small but if you kind of know what you're going for, it doesn't really matter. I was helped by Sergio who was extremely patient and knowledgeable about their shoes and the different lasts, etc. He laced up new Allen Edmonds shoes and boots on my feet in record time. I was able to try on 3 pairs and be done in less than 30 minutes (despite it being a busy Saturday Sale weekend). He even notified me that I could save on tax by shipping the shoes out if I didn't need them that very instant. Saved myself more money on top of these great sale prices! read more

Went to the 551 Madison shop this week, on the hunt for extra wide dress shoes. Unfortunately many stores don't carry the EEE size, but I was recommended to check out AE and I was not disappointed. I cannot say the prior comments regarding greeting/attention are true, as I walked in and was immediately greeted by the store manager (Scott) who immediately sized my feet up (length & width) and helped me figure out a pair that would be best for what I needed. He was quick in grabbing pairs from the back, and we settled on the McGregor Wingtips (great in Bourbon color - looks good with grey/navy suit and/or pants). They were also on sale for $259, which was great as well. They were very professional and attentive, so I will absolutely be returning for another pair in the future. It is a bit of a small store, that would be my only gripe. read more

I was very excited to finally be able to go to an AE shoe store. They have a great website and was looking for shoes to go with a wedding outfit. Online, I noticed this store had a pair of really nice clearance wingtips. For a steal of $199 normally $300+. I was already fantasizing about showing up to the wedding wearing a pear of what would likely be the nicest shoes at the wedding. When I got there I was not greeted. I looked around and noticed I was overlooked compared to other men dressed in suits. When I was finally approached I asked if they had shoes on clearance, I was gestured toward two pairs. Then I asked about the particular pair I was looking for. Without hesitation the older sales assoc told me there are non, they were discontinued. I told him I called online and was told there was a pair there. He paused and said hell go check. He came back and looked a little bothered. I tried the shoe on and it was very long, made my feet look like canoes.. I read online that they run long and a bit narrow. I asked the associate about the size. He told me it was a pointy shoe and therefore will have more room. He said it did not run long but that I like shoes with my toes at the tip of the shoe. I told it was just what I'm accustomed to. I tried on a similar shoe 1 size down and it fit well. The salesman told me it wouldn't fit right as my original shoe size is best for my foot.:/ Another person walked in almost the same story as mine. Same short to the point service. Ill give this place 5 stars based on the beautiful shoes I saw. It loses 2 for the service. I was very let down my experience did not match the stores online, as well as yelp reputation. read more

Bought a pair of mctavish in black with chili stitching. Love them. Had them recrafted with a lug sole. Love them even more. The heal seperated after just one month and they fixed them within 2 weeks. Going to buy my second pair of edmunds this week. Probably the finch. They are worth every penny. read more

Waited for 8 minutes at the register, waiting to be acknowledged so I can buy some laces and walked out in frustration. No one asked if they can ring me up or help me, even after an employee walked by me twice while I was waiting directly in front of the cash register. It is a shame since I usually prefer to get my shoes from AE but after this experience I will not be giving them any more business. There are plenty of other options for me to go to, no need to spend money where the staff is so oblivious. read more

I know this brand, I've spent lots of $ over the years. I also know that there are 2 stores in NYC on Madison Ave within walking distance of each other. I've always gone to the other ( cross the street from Brooks Brothers) I went to this one as it was closer to me, and as a New Yorker I had a tight schedule. I knew exactly what I wanted: model, color, size etc. I could have bought it on line, but needed it tomorrow. I was prepared to buy and go. I arrived in the store, the 2 sales clerks, one a dark skinned lady and the other a white guy with a really bad bleach job were discussing his stress and how he sure he was having a heart attack. Poor thing. After being in the shop for 10 minutes ( and there were no other customers) and they couldn't be bothered to acknowledge me much less ask if I need anything, I left. I walked about 10 blocks south to the OTHER store. It was packed, but as soon as I walked in I was greeted with a smile and hello. I got my shoes, paid the bill and got on with my life. I like the brand. Theirs are the only shoes I wear. I have a least a dozen pairs. I've shopped at this location for years as it is close to my office. The reason for the low score is because I've had to deal with the store manager Stan today, whose demeanor and attitude just made it abundantly clear that he does not want nor care for my business. This is in complete contrast with my experiences with other Allen Edmonds staff. I walked into the store ready to buy a pair of new shoes but ended up walking out empty handed largely because I get the feeling Stan doesn't want me there to spend my money. I guess I will have to walk up and down Madison Avenue to find other alternative shoe stores for my footwear needs. It's too bad such a good brand with good products puts somebody this low Caliber to be in charge of a retail store. read more

The customer service here is awful. I wear Allen Edmund shoes. I am new to NYC and was looking forward to find a reason to go into this store. I had every intention of buying a pair of $385 shoes and a matching belt. I walked out with nothing but a frustrating experience. The shoes I wanted were the ONLY ones from their website not sold in the store and I did not have 4 weeks to wait for the shoes to be made. I was not offered any other suggestions or any other alternatives, the sales man just walked away from me. Got back to my office and I called the store to to say how disappointed I was and was treated in the same rude manner and the salesman was about to hang up on me. I like the brand but not the store. I will be sure and let their corporate office now about this as my company is a customer of their factory. read more

I was very much disappointed with the customer service at this location due to the following reasons, 1. My wife and I were not greeted upon entering the store although there was only one customer when we arrived. 2. Reesa (maybe incorrectly spelled), the lady who assisted me, wouldn't stop making inappropriate jokes and fun about me and my wife for the whole time while we were in the store. English is my second language but I don't think it's an appropriate manner to call someone "bossy" and think that's funny. 3. Reesa didn't provide any professional advice regarding purchasing a pair of dressing shoes. Maybe I was having a too high expectation due to the good reputation of this brand online. Overall, I think Reesa didn't expect/think her sarcastic tone was sensed by me while she was throwing all those "jokes" that she thinks are funny. I was looking to buy a pair of shoes when I go to a shoe store, not a hear inappropriate jokes. Her behavior/language was definitely insulting and making me uncomfortable. I would recommend the store manager to have a conversation with her and avoid it happening again in the future. read more

Because this store is busy, you may need to wait a bit, but I've always found the service top rate. I love AE shoes and the company as well. At one point the manager of this store -- Stan at the time -- exchanged a pair of shoes that I'd purchased on line but that were unexpectedly pinching my foot after a month's wear. A good store with a wide selection and incredibly helpful staff. I've been in numerous times looking to upgrade my wardrobe and each time everyone's been very warm and cheerful. Richard is especially helpful. I wanted to try on multiple styles of shoe to see how they look and he got each one down from storage and took very good photos for me all the while being very friendly and patient with me.
