I've been to The House of Fun twice since they relocated to this much larger store in Barrington…read more Although they have a wide assortment of collectible toys, cards, video games, and comics, it can be a "house of overwhelming fun" to some. This store is jam-packed with inventory stacked from floor to ceiling so watch your step! It's not uncommon to see piles of items strewn across the floor and walkways because they have already reached the storage limit on the walls and shelves in this newer facility. I primarily come here for the comics, of which they have both a new release wall in the front of the store and a collection of back issue bins in the back of the store. And so this place can be like a treasure hunt looking for that key issue or rare gem, making it a fun place to shop. But what is not fun (and somewhat annoying) is that there are no prices on most items. It was explained to me that since there are millions upon millions of things in the store, there is no way the employees can keep up with the impossible task of pricing everything. So, instead, they wait until someone is interested in an item and inquires about the price. Then the employee checks with the owner, who presumably looks up the current market value on the item and then puts a tiny white price sticker on it. But be forewarned--just because you may see an item with an attractive price sticker already doesn't mean that's the actual House of Fun price. House of Fun only uses one specific price sticker (a small white rectangle in a particular font), and any other price tags that may be present on the item are leftover from when the owner originally acquired the collection. This is very evident in their large assortment of back-issue comics. I learned this the hard way when I found a bunch of valuable comics with dirt cheap and multi-colored price stickers on them, only to be told that those prices were incorrect. Another thing to note is the prices they are asking for on the back issue comics are either wayyyyy overpriced or a few bucks over fair market value. So, don't expect to go diving in a one-dollar bin here. Unless it's truly an essential issue you can't find anywhere else, I would say look for it elsewhere. You'll find lots of gems and essential comics at the House of Fun but not have fun with their pricing (or lack thereof).

I went here for Free Comic Book Day (FCBD) as a way to finally get a feel for the place. But I figured FCBD was the perfect opportunity since most shops use it as a way to connect with and introduce new patrons to their business. Upon opening the front door, I was immediately greeted by a very friendly cat. I thought, okay, this is my type of place, being a cat guy myself. But that's where the warm feelings end. Unfortunately, the feline was the only friendly personality here as the owner didn't want to acknowledge or make it feel like I was really wanted. (And after reading some of these other reviews, I can see that I'm not alone in that regard.) As for the selection of books itself, there is certainly a HUGE selection of new releases and back issue bins to go through. Unfortunately, all the back issues are priced at market value or higher. Not exactly a competitive price considering all of the other local comic book stores in the same area have much better pricing. Plus, dollar bins.

It's also located next to The House of Fun toy shop. Interior of the shop is nothing to look at; it's rough and could use a renovation. New pull selection of comics was fair, but had a good selection of graphic novels. Almost no wall books to speak of. Where this shop stands out is, like the other location, is the large longbox selection. This takes up the majority of the shops space. An important item worth noting is the shop does have several comic cats. They are friendly and like pets. Overall, while this location could use a renovation, I think it's easier to access and better then the Philadelphia shop.

We were visiting from Northern Virginia (where gamestops monopolize the gaming community) and needed to do some shopping. I was thrilled to be able to pick up Fallout: New Vegas for only 14.44 as every where else I've been, it's around 20 bucks. With the buy 2 get one free, we ended up leaving the store 50 dollars and 7 games in hand. The employee (I think he was co-owner) was even kind enough to clean one of the games for us that he wouldn't normally clean because it was from the bargain bin! It went in dirty and came out looking awesome! He mainly did this so if the game was bad we wouldn't have to return, would be quite a trip lol. Awesome service, great prices. Truthfully there were lots more fun things to buy if I hadn't done most of my holiday shopping already. And if they don't have the book you want in stock, they will gladly order it for you. Do not! I repeat do not purchase anything from here. It's smoke and mirrors…read more We walked into this store asking for Japanese TCG cards. The shop markets itself around Japanese anime goods, references working with Bandai, and presents itself as a TCG destination. What we were sold were Chinese-language collectible card boxes. Not Japanese releases. Not Japanese Bandai TCG. Not playable trading card game cards. They are novelty collectibles with printed stats that do not belong to any legitimate game system. We've now spent over $200 here believing we were buying authentic Japanese TCG product for our kid. We weren't. When a family asks for Japanese TCG cards, you do not hand them Chinese-market collectible imports and let them believe it's the real thing. Worst of all, our 11-year-old thought he was getting something amazing -- until he realized he couldn't even look the cards up because they aren't part of any real TCG. If you're selling Chinese-language collectibles, say that clearly. Don't lean on Japanese branding and Bandai references while doing it. We're done.
