Paul looked to his personal stash, and what he couldn't find, he fashioned himself. He has a wealth of knowledge about locks and doors and is expertly skilled. After he fixed my doors, he helped me with an old safe that was in our basement. Cost was very reasonable, and he and his wife were super kind. Highly recommend!!

I really wanted to like this local business, but they seem to be doing their best to get bad…read morereviews. I hired Paul for a really routine re-keying: it was a slow, expensive, and rude experience, but I want to support my neighbors on Garth Road, so I didn't say anything assuming it was a bad day. Then I had to have a second experience with them: The lock started sticking more and more, to the point where I was concerned the key would snap off. I called him, he hung up on me mid-question (saying his wife would call me back to schedule things). I called back and he sent me to voicemail; at that point I got fed up. By the time his wife called me back: - I requested quotes from Yelp - Another locksmith reached out, gave a quote - That new locksmith showed up, replaced the lock entirely, and spent time shaping the lock according to the shape of the doorframe. He was also polite and friendly to talk with! - He charged less than 1/2 the price for *all* of this than Paul's routine re-keying. So by the time Paul's wife called me back, I started to say "look, I don't need your services, someone already fixed it for me". She got incredibly defensive, to the point of ranting about how the super of a co-op was recently fired, and something about an affair? It was weird, she hung up, then immediately called me back (off to voicemail with her!) and I resolved to write this review. What the heck. I just hope they're not replaced with another salon.

Right away, I noticed that all the keys he left looked like copies rather than original manufacturer keys. I later followed up to ask why I hadn't received an original key with a brand-new lock. During that conversation, instead of addressing my question, he repeatedly said, "I don't remember you," at least six times. I had already acknowledged that I reached out later than I should have and did not expect him to remember me. My only concern was understanding why I didn't receive an original key. From the beginning of that interaction, he came across as defensive and did not clearly answer my question.

I have: 1) Left my…read morelaptop on an Amtrak train in DC; 2) Lost three Blackberry devices in the past year; 3) Left multiple pairs of shoes behind at various hotels in Spain. Me? Scatterbrained? NEVER. So, the real question is not "Dana, how the hell did you lock yourself out of the house?" but actually, "Whoa Dana, why did it take you so long to have this happen to you?" It's 7:45am and I'm getting ready to leave for work when It Happens. I realized it as soon as I slammed the door, actually. Because my Blackberry was conveniently left inside, I could not consult my Yelp App for a reputable locksmith and it was off to the neighbor's to find a copy of the Yellow Pages. The only locksmith with 24/7 Emergency Service was Lockwise. At this point, it was around 8:15 when I made the first call. The dispatcher assured me that he'd have a technician to me within 30 minutes. 30 minutes roll by... The dispatcher calls me to say that the technician was having a problem starting his van, but now he is on his way. "On his way from where?" I asked. (The phone book did not specify a location.) I did not get a response but was assured that the technician would arrive within the half hour. I called the dispatcher once more after another half hour had elapsed. "Where is this guy?" The dispatcher told me the technician was approximately 10 minutes away. 10 minutes later... The technician looks at the lock, telling me that he will have to drill the lock. (Surprising news because the lock was standard and he probably could have picked it.) Because this was "emergency service," he would have to add a $110 surcharge. And because I couldn't just have a door without a lock, he would sell me a new lock AND then charge an installation fee for the service ($145). Oh, and to cut the lock in the first place: $185 [1]. I understand that emergencies do happen and that services like this will price gouge when the situation arises. I wouldn't be so incensed had this guy actually showed up on time and the company been truthful from the start, rather than have me wait an additional half hour. There is absolutely no reason to charge me these additional fees when you cannot get yourself to me in a prompt manner during this "emergency." I would hardly consider the time that the technician arrived (9:30 or so) outside of normal business hours. I also understand that these folks have a business to run. But when you are charging absurd prices AND acting unscrupulously, I have zero respect for you and you have no right to remain in business. [1] They do not accept American Express. Can you imagine the points I would have racked up for my Spain trip if they did?

When the locksmith arrived, after he had already taken stuff apart, he told me it was $100 more than the quote on the phone. I got the impression that this was business as usual. Then, after the locksmith cut the keys and tried them, it was clear that the lock was sticky. Really sticky. I told him to fix it, that the keys were for my 66 year old mother and I didn't want her standing outside in the winter trying to get into her car. He responded that if I used the key 15 or so times that it would stop sticking. To which I said, "Look. If I'm paying top price for this, I don't want a sticky key." "Umm, $375 isn't a lot of money, ma'am." What a jerk. I was insistent that he fix the lock so that it didn't stick. Finally, he went to his car for WD40 and fixed it straight away. It was astonishing to me that he didn't do that in the first place. Aside from the last minute price addition, the locksmith was arrogant, not at all courteous, extended the time on the job by being on the phone the entire time, and had horrendous customer service. If someone's going to pay top dollar (or any dollar for that matter) for a service, they shouldn't have to beg to get the job done.
