I've been a collector for many years, and have shopped all over the US and outside of the US before Discogs was a thing, and after. I've also worked at several used record ships over the years. I recently moved to TN, and was pretty horrified at the lack of selection and pricing I've encountered- also a lack of quality used records. I've been through Alison's a few times over the last few years, and I do have to hand it to her- her selection is pretty great. There's a wonderful Jazz selection, as well as a bit of world music which is impossible to find in TN! The regular rock fare is represented with the addition of some great New Wave stuff and Euro stuff- honestly A+. Also, her selection is in fantastic condition. None of this scratched and damaged stuff that you see for sale all over TN. She absolutely takes great care in what she buys. With that being said, I've been in 5-6 times and maybe purchased one record. Her prices are honestly insane for any collector. Laughable. $5 to sometimes $20 over the Discogs maximum value. This is more per record that anyone can purchase AND ship on Discogs. I'm assuming this is why her stock remains pretty much the same with the exception of discounted records. I'm a little confused about the situation here. She's not in a super high rent area for Nashville, she isn't open every day. Why markup these records so incredibly high? Why only market to the folks who don't know what things are worth and will pay whatever and likely not return like a collector would? This makes absolutely zero sense- logically for a store front, and for any successful business plan. Almost everyone has a phone these days and can easily check what a record is worth, or currently selling for. It takes me less than 30 seconds to find that the Art Pepper Pacific box set last sold for $112.00 in MINT condition, and that her's is almost $15 overpriced. Yikes. I keep going back hoping that the prices have been even somewhat adjusted, but find the same outrageous markups and basically the same stock I saw the last time. Sad, because this could really be an amazing shop that Nash really needs. read more

Could be a great store, but as someone who has shopped for records at many places here in the US and abroad, the prices are horribly inflated. I did find some things I may have purchased, but the prices were almost comical. Most of the record buying public here in Nashville are educated buyers, and are very in the know of what the asking price should be on a record they covet. Many variables are considered including how rare the record is, the condition of the record, and whether or not it has been recently reissued, just to name a few. Record buyers in Nashville consult several websites like Discogs to scout what they want and get an idea of what they may have to pay if they are lucky enough to find that "unicorn" record of their desires. Long story short, you cannot fool the informed. Don't even try. If this shop wants to have a shot at being competitive with other shops in middle Tennessee or even the rest of the world, they MUST get their prices back to Earth. Until then, my money and I'm sure many others will remain on our person, or end up going to Discogs instead. read more

Yes, pay a visit to Alison's. It's a great little find in West Nashville. Alison is super-helpful and a lot of fun to talk with. This is the kind of place where it feels good doing business. The owner seems to enjoy her customers and is having fun doing what she's doing. I was super impressed with Alison's selection--especially for punk and metal records. There are quite a few original 90's rock pressings, too. You won't find yourself sifting through a high volume of filler inventory like you're likely to at other highly-trafficked Nashville record stores. Prices are a bit more expensive than can be found online, but I've not seen any brick and mortar stores offering cheaper prices. (And you're not paying shipping here.) Be sure to check the budget and over-stock bins! There are quite a few treasures in there! read more

Like the others said, prices are way too high. eBay is much cheaper and has much more of a selection. Not sure why Nashville area record shops keep over-inflating the prices to the point of pushing consumers to buy online. read more

Alison's Record shop is an asset to Nashville. Deep selection of vintage and new vinyl, spanning all genres from jazz/fusion to classic rock, blues, classical (best selection in town - hands down), and musicals/movie soundtracks. No other record shop in Nashville has this kind of selection of hard-to-find albums on hand for the price. Two listening stations (one with headphones) with high quality components, with seating to enjoy the music. Lots of album $10 and under. More expensive albums priced competitively with the national marketplace (e.g. Discogs). They also sell vinyl accessories, such as the Spin Clean record cleaner, record sleeves, stylus cleaner, and record brushes. And I cannot emphasize this enough: The customer service is the best I've seen at a record shop in Nashville. Overall, a great place to hang out and play, discuss, and discover great music. read more

I found this place on the Internet and I had a meeting close by so I thought I'd check it out. I found some great classical albums and box sets - some unique stuff and some records I bought to fill holes in my collection. I've had mixed experiences on Discogs with questionable record quality ratings and expensive shipping from Europe. Buying a box set here for $5 and several $10 albums, I had the expectation that some would be good and some wouldn't. Each record I bought has surpassed my expectations. These records seem like they were in a collection and well cared for since they were originally purchased. I am very happy with what I paid and I am thrilled by the quality of the records. I was showing my son and we both commented we have got to get back to Alisons when we have some time to really look. read more

This place has a great selection of punk and metal but at a premium. Everything is priced 40% too high. Friendly people tho.

Stopped into Alison's after shopping at McKay's this afternoon. I was not impressed at all. Mediocre selection and some of the most inflated record prices I've seen in Nashville. I'm not sure where the other guy shops to classify Alison's as super competitive but they are definitely not that. I did not see one record in the store priced under $10, so am guessing that is their starting price. Many records that will cost you 2.99 at Grimey's, The Groove or Great Escape will run you $10 at Alison's. Much of the pricing I saw was plain laughable. If you are visiting Nashville and looking for records, do yourself a favor and visit Grimey's first... I find that they have the most level headed and fair pricing in town, not too mention a good selection that moves quickly. The Groove is also very reasonable and fair . Deals can be found at the Great Escape but it is sometimes taxing to do so. You will also find erratic pricing, one LP of 2 LP sets etc at Great Escape. Mckay's in Bellevue is also worth a visit if you are out that way. I would put Alison's at the bottom of the Nashville Record Store list based on their super inflated pricing alone..... Grimey's, The Groove, Great Escape, McKays... that'll keep ya busy...and you're bound to go home with some GEM's and some deals. read more

I dropped by Alison's after a friend pointed it out as we were driving by. I'd never heard of the place, so I decided to try it out. Man, did I have no idea what I was in for. The selection wasn't super great, but certainly good enough for me. However, the prices were absolutely absurd. For example, a 1977 reissue of the Beatles 'Revolver' was $60. Yes, you read that correctly - sixty bucks. As I dug through more records, I realized that this was a trend throughout the whole store. I'd estimate that the average price of a record was around $35-$45, aside from those in the bargain bin, which, like all record store bargain bins, are there for a reason - they aren't anything anyone is going to be searching for or they're in poor condition. The records I found were great, but there is no excuse for these prices. I could go to ANY other store in Nashville that sells records and find them for much, much cheaper. At one particular record store in Nashville, I bought 16 records in one visit for $64. If I bought that many at Alison's, I'd be blowing around $600. I loved the cozy charm of the store, but I cannot recommend it. read more
