I am very particular about my selection of sunglasses. They need to fit well and look good. While these characteristics add to the overall experience of wearing them, the most important feature is how a good pair of lenses can visually enhance the world around you. After trying on numerous pairs of sunglasses, I finally decided on a pair of Maui Jim's. The polarized lenses in the pair that I selected are truly remarkable. They offer a crisp and clear visual field. They also greatly enrich the natural red and orange colors which are often subdued in the natural landscapes of Sonoma County. Dr. Chiang's staff were all very cordial and informative in helping me make my final selection. They took extra care in cleaning up the lenses and making sure that the glasses fit comfortably. Dear Dr. Chang, Firstly, thank you for your reply and explanations. I do appreciate you taking the time to respond. I would like to first say, Sonoma Eye Works was who had referred me to you to repair my Tom Fords, being that you were one of the only retail locations in this area. This is why I came to you in the first place. I figured since I would be taking these in to be fixed, I would at the same time take in my Chanel sunglasses to also be repaired. No, I have not purchased anything from you previously, but I really did not feel that it mattered in the end if I was coming I to have the lenses replaced. I was bringing them in, not under warranty, but to have you make the repairs, and for me to pay you a fair price for this service. I was told when I left them that you "would get back to me with pricing". I left the store with not even a receipt that you had them both in your possession. A full week had come and gone and I had heard nothing! I called back and the woman who answered the phone was mortified, and told me she was very sorry that no one had done anything on them yet, nor had any phone calls been placed to your reps for researching out replacement at that time. she assured me that she would get right on it, and phone me back with pricing once she received the information. To her credit, she did call me back an hour later and left me a voicemail message with pricing. I fail to see how hours of research were done, as it only took her an hour to get back to me! After I received her pricing, I told her no way!!! And for a reason!!! The pricing I was given on my Chanel glasses was for you to make them in house, not to find authentic lenses (because they are no longer available!). The cost was $265, which is insane!!! I went back to Sonoma Eye Works, which is whom replaced them the first time and it was $30. Within 2 minutes they told me that they were unable to get authentic lenses because they no longer made them. But they did tell me they could craft new lenses in house, which they did for $80 and they were ready 2 hours later!!! As for the Tom Ford glasses, I was pushed to consider just buying new ones as the quoted price for repair was over $300! Which again, was ridiculous!!! I did consider purchasing a new pair, as I was told that your Tom Ford line was 50% off. That was until I got a gander of the initial pricing to begin with (they were double of what I would pay elsewhere! So the 50% off was nothing off at all in the grand scheme of things!). I did contact Tom Ford directly, and they replaced the lenses for free! So in the end, I don't feel bad for anything said or done. I do not feel bad that your employees did their job. I am sorry if that is offensive, but it is a reality, not an excuse for bad service! It is my right as a consumer to give an honest review, and this is what I have done! read more

I went in because I was concerned about a possible infection in one of my eyes. But rather than a diagnosis and medication for that, the doctor focused on recommending I buy new glasses (even though I didn't have my current glasses with me for her to evaluate). While I was having no trouble with my vision, I followed her advice and bought new frames and lenses from her. But my eyes never could adjust to them. And a few weeks later I ended up seeing another doctor who did treat the infection. So bottom line in my experience with this office was that my medical problem was NOT treated, and I spent a few hundred dollars on glasses I didn't need and couldn't use. read more

I brought a senior family member here for her annual, medicare-approved eye health exam. This is a medical exam designed to determine the condition and actual health of the eyes when someone either has, or is at risk for, a serious problem such as glaucoma, retinopathy, or cataracts. In the paperwork filled out prior to the appointment, there was a questionnaire basically requesting the patient make a choice between paying $50 up front for a refraction test, or waiting until later and being billed $100. Since the purpose of this visit was for an eye health exam and not a vision test, we wrote on the page "no refraction, please." My family member already has an Optometrist that she sees for any eyeglasses or vision acuity issues. A medicare eye health exam, however, is a completely different procedure and requires the services of an Ophthalmologist since it deals with evaluating the medical condition of the eyes. Upon viewing the returned paperwork, the desk person essentially insisted that a choice must be made between paying $50 now or $100 later. We reiterated that a refraction test was not being requested, only the eye health exam. She stated that the refraction must be done as it is part of the health exam. We questioned that a test which medicare does not approve, nor pay for, would be part of a covered medical examination. She was adamant that the refraction test must be included. So, here we are. It took a 2-hour trip to get to this location. My family member needs her annual eye health exam. And we are being told that we must pay for an unnecessary and unwanted refraction test just to have access to the doctor who is then able to perform the medically necessary exam. According to medicare guidelines, we have the right to refuse unnecessary and, particularly, non-covered services. However, we are faced with the dilemma of... if we exercise that right and insist on the exam without the refraction test, how well can we expect to be treated, and could we then fully trust the results? So, we opted to leave and drive the 2-hours home without receiving medical services from this provider. Not because we couldn't afford the $50 or $100 dollars - we have tipped a valet more than that. But because of principle. This office seems to value the up-sell of a $50/$100 vision test over the substance of important medical care. Aside from the fact that, technically, they did not have the right to push an non-covered procedure, the truth remains that this is a direct reflection of the integrity of the business as a whole. After all, my family member has never been told the refraction test is a required element of the medicare eye health exam. If it were, medicare would cover it. No other ophthalmologist she has seen in this, or any other area of California, has ever insisted it be performed. How many other seniors have been coerced into paying out of pocket for this unneeded test? Many seniors on medicare are on a fixed income. $50 or $100 could make the difference in whether they have enough to eat that month. At least develop a policy to inform senior patients upfront - when making an appointment - that your office will insist on a refraction test which will not be covered by medicare or any supplemental medigap insurance so they can make an informed decision about patronizing your business. read more

EDIT 11/2018: As Dr. Chiang no longer sees patients as an Ophthalmologist, my review below probably has minimal relevance to others, but I leave it for historical purposes regarding her overall demeanor and professionalism. I've had to choose a new doctor to continue my care in the past few months. First, as others have mentioned, yes this office is part of a larger medical group that does a lot of cosmetic treatments. Yes, it's a little weird seeing the pamphlets for these procedures throughout the office when you are going for medical care. With that out of the way, I have only gone to this office to see Dr. Chiang. I have never stepped foot into the other half of the building, and don't need glasses so can't speak to that side of their business. I am a young glaucoma patient and moved to Sonoma County in 2015. I was paired with Dr. Chiang as an in-network ophthalmologist, and went to see her with piles of past tests and records to scan from the prior 8 years of treatment. I've had a few different doctors caring for my vision over the years, and ditched one or two who seemed to want to completely contradict the decisions of prior doctors (but who themselves wanted to make some questionable choices, like putting me on beta-blockers when I was marathon training!). I've had some great doctors in the past in other cities including doctors deeply involved in glaucoma research. Dr. Chiang reviewed my history and concurred with the majority of what these good doctors had done--decisions which have contributed to no advancement of vision loss since I was diagnosed. She has been my ophthalmologist since then. She's kept my vision going, skillfully helped me to transition both my eye medications when my insurance wouldn't pay for what I had been using before, and has generally been great. She may seem a bit quick but all my best doctors have been, I would say it's more a no-nonsense approach. That said she enjoys explaining technical details about my condition and answering questions, revealing her knowledge and interest in keeping abreast of research. read more

I saw Dr. Chiang around September, 2014. As other reviewers have commented, I was struck by the number of cosmetic treatments (e.g. botox) that were offered that had nothing to do with eye care. i assumed it was another revenue stream. I found Dr. Chiang to be competent, but somewhat abrupt - she seemed to be in a rush. I decided to find another physician for eye care. However, when I called today to get a CD from my eye exam (just like a CD for an MRI or Xray - the key eye exam is done by computer), Dr. Chiang's assistant refused to provide a CD. That's my data! Any other doc who does an exam by computer provides CD's upon request. read more

The staff is nice but that's about the only good thing I can say about this optometry. Not only is there follow up non existent but it has taken over a month and a half to get my glasses from them. Every time I call they say it will be ready in a few days and they will call me but I end up NEVER hearing from them and when I call to follow up its the same story. Absolutely ridiculous and worthless. Something that should have taken only a couple weeks has taken almost two months now and their customer service is severely lacking. It's not that hard to follow up with people. There are far better places to go then some designer optometry that can't seem to call their customers back. read more

Dr Chiang was my dr for the past 3 years. I've always had issues with contact lenses in the past. But she was so patient with me and after six months of trying on pair after pair, we finally found the pair that worked with my eyes. In 2011 and 2012 apparently dr Chiang stopped seeing spectera insurance patients (such as myself), however other doctors in her practice still did. She however still made the exception to see me both times. Fast forward to the present. I called in and requested to see dr Chiang. Mary (the person who answered the phone) explained that she no longer sees spectera patients. I explained to her that she has seen me the prior two years and has made exceptions. I asked Mary if I could speak to dr Chiang. Mary said she would leave her a message. Mary called me back a couple hours later and said dr Chiang was not available to see me at all. That's my review. I've not mentioned my personal opinion. Those are just the facts. read more

Dr. Chiang has been my eye doctor for way over ten years. I go there because of her credentials: NYU and other prestigous schools. I am glad I used that as my barometer. She performed two cataract surgeries on me and my vision is now 20/20. Over the years, I've come to know their staff on a first name basis. Personally, I've gotten the best service from Yvonne, Kara, and Maria that any client could ask! I came in as a new patient. I arrived a few minutes early for a noon appointment. While waiting for the doctor, an assistant took me into a room to measure my iris (I believe) and its curvature (the standard machine that your rest your head in that isn't the one that blows air). The first thing I noticed was the machine appeared dirty and didn't appear to have been wiped down after the last person. I could have been wrong, but the visual wasn't great. I've been in offices where the assistant wipes the machine down in my presence to demonstrate cleanliness, which seems to be the most professional way to do it, unless there is a one-time protector piece on the machine that is removed between patient uses. That took a minute, then I went back to the waiting room. Around 12:20, I asked how long they estimate it would be before the doctor was ready to see me and how long the appointment would take, since I had a meeting at 1 that I was worried I'd have to cancel or reschedule. They said the doctor would be with me in 5-10 minutes and the appointment would take about 15 minutes. 10-12 minutes later, the same assistant called me into a different room to start checking my vision. I asked to make sure I would be getting both my glasses prescription and my contact lenses prescription assessed today. It's something I've done at every eye doctor I've ever been to (and they usually ask me up front) and didn't think it would be a problem, but I wanted to make sure they were prepared for it. I was told that that wasn't possible, that the doctor requires a second visit to give a contact lens prescription. She requires the patient wear a trial version of lenses, then come back to see how they're doing, before writing the prescription. She also mentioned they aren't heavily stocked with trial lenses, which meant I could come back even 3 times total (another time to get the lenses and another to get the Rx). I ended up canceling the appointment then and left. Within 5 minutes of research, I found another doctor and booked an appointment this week who will write both Rx's during the same visit. I suspect the reason for the contact lens trial issue is (1) to be protective of the patient (but this only makes sense for first-time wearers or for those with issues during the exam, not those who have worn contacts for 20 years), and/or (2) to give the impression that they're upper-class and special. The assistant told me the doctor chooses to do things "differently," which can be a good thing but doesn't seem necessary at all here. I've been to plenty of fantastic doctors in the past and this didn't feel right. read more

If I could, I would give this office a below zero rating. I went to this office in 2007 when they were located on Yulupa Ave. Dr. Chiang herself was nice to go through the eye exam. She recommended me to purchase a pair of eye glasses from her office which I did. I paid the exam fee and 50% of the deposit for the glasses. The office promised the delivery of the glasses would be about 7-10 business days. Then THREE months passed by and no glasses, not even a phone call from the office! Finally, I disputed the charge with my credit card company. That caught their attention. The guy who sold me the glasses first said he did not have my contact information. I told him that I was the patient and filled a patient form there with all my contact information. Then he said that he called a couple times and left me voicemail. LIAR! I printed out all incoming & outgoing phone record. Her office DID NOT call me once within a 3-month period! I had a simple prescription and got the same prescription glasses in other place within a week. I emailed Dr. Chiang about this. Dr. Chiang emailed me back, instead of correcting her staff's mistake, she insisted that I should pay the 100% for the glasses and threatened to send me to collection. I even did NOT have the possession of the glasses! I never had such a ridiculous thing happened to me! I was not going to pick up my prescription glasses and pay 100% after 3 months. They could keep it all they want. Then she sent me to the collection for the exam and eyeglasses fee! The reality is that I paid my exam fee and only disputed the eyeglasses amount. Her whole staff was very incompetent, from sales to bookkeeping. I told the collection agency about the story. They put a note in my file and never bothered me again. Of course, it hurt my credit score at that time. But it comes back now. When I pulled out my credit report the other day, she categorized the whole amount as medical bills. Come on, I paid the exam fee already. And the prescription glasses I never had are medical bill??? I should have taken her to the court! Lesson learned here: NEVER go to the office. Otherwise, it will ruin your life! read more

I have had problems with my eyes for the last couple of years and Dr. Chiang was recommended by a family member. After my initial evaluation, she determined I needed cataract surgery. I had the cataract removed from my right eye a week ago and experienced no pain whatsoever. At my post-op appointment when the eye patch was removed, I could not believe how clear I could see and how brilliant colors are. I am looking forward to having Dr. Chiang remove the cataract from my left eye. Dr. Chiang and her staff are professional, knowledgeable and friendly. read more

Don't use this doctor unless you have so much money that you don't care how much your treatment costs. She is all about preforming excessive procedures - to the point of being totally useless - and setting her office rates on the basis of whether you pay for them up front or use your insurance. Every office visit she requires a test of your visual acuity, even if, as her assistant says, you "Were there yesterday." And if you pay $50, that's all it costs. If you don't pay it up front, she bills your insurance $100 and you pay the co-pay, which is likely to be $50 or more. But the part that gets lost is that you don't need tests that often. In fact her whole practice seems to be directed towards testing people for everything, at every opportunity, in order to extract the maximum possible amount of revenue from each patient. I used my only allowable eye exam to go to Dr. Chiang's office. Walking in, I was stunned by the barrage of skin care items and procedures prominently displayed. Botox and other facial treatments were available. I needed to find out about things in my vision and get glasses that would help me in my daily life. After waiting about 15 minutes, I was given a quick test by an assistant and then Dr. Chiang came in and did the more intense exam, which went fine. I came away with a prescription that I had filled at Lens Crafters and now I have glasses that only give me headaches. I felt that Dr. Chiang really wasn't listening to my concerns. For example, even writing this review is difficult as I can't see the screen on my computer very well, and the glasses she prescribed are only good for distance. In all, I would never go back there and wish I had waited the couple of months needed to go see the ophthalmologist my medical dr recommended. read more

It's taking me awhile to yelp.....let's start that I am a new patient of Dr Chiang. I was hesitant to see a ophthalmologist due to the fact, I did not want to admit I needed glasses! But after many years of rigorous computer work, it was not an option to wait any longer. So, from the first time I walked through the door, my first impression of the office was the cleanliness and the modern decor. The office girls were superb! I was swiftly checked in and greeted with smiles. I then waited for a tech to do her thing. I wasn't sure what test I was getting done since it was my first time, I didn't know what to expect. I ended up having three different test, one for my eye glasses, another to see if I had glaucoma and a final test to test the tear duct level in both my eyes where I was prescribed a prescription. Each time I was really impressed with the care I received. Kudos to K'yala for giving me extra attention. I could not decide on frames. I ended up with choosing ray bans, both in glasses and shades. I love them both. My curious toddler decided to pull my eye glasses out of my purse and fed it to my dog! It was still wearable but I wanted to see if they could help with the frame. Unfortunately, not much but K'yala went far and beyond to help me by calling her ray ban rep and seeing about getting other ones ordered. Warranty does not cover chewed up glasses by dogs. Ha! I tried. Anywho, I also had her order mercy ban lens for my husband shades that somehow got ruined, she was able to order for me. So happy because sending the frames out to see if it could be fixed and to pay shipping, waiting....and could've paid, who knows what. Y'vonne was also great! She helped with explaining my bills and was also courteous in person. I had a great experience and I love my gifts for purchasing lens through them. Whoo hoo! Didn't expect that. Dr. Chiang,was thorough and explained my test and any concerns and questions I had. Overall, I can't complain. Love the staff, cleanliness and the selection they have. read more
