I am from Chicago and have migrated to Algonquin recently to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city. I have love mexican food and was privileged growing up in a mainly latino area of the city so I know authentic and quality. I have to say I was very impressed with the Algonquin Mexican Restaurant. I ordered the steak taco dinner and thought it was terrific. They only get four stars though because 1.) red salsa kind of sucks & 2.) I asked for corn tortillas but was given flour. I will be going back again for sure and look forward to introducing the place to my wife. Place looks like a dive for sure but give it a shot. This place is a basic burrito house with good food. My husband and I have both dined in, and picked up food from here around three, maybe four times. Both of us really enjoy the steak tacos/steak burrito with cilantro and onion and their fresh, chunky guacamole... YUM! I'm slightly picky when it comes to the meat in my burrito and if I bite into hard chunks or super fatty pieces, I get a grossed out (I know.. grow up.. but to each their own.) A great Mexican restaurant with a warm family welcome. I've been here a number of times, and the food is usually very good. Mostly excellent preparation, and nothing has been bad. The decor leaves a lot to be desired, aesthetically, but is clean and functional. Not big, and tight for more than 4-6 people. The owner family is very friendly, and watches out for when you're done eating or need anything. Young man who typically takes my order is very nice, but a little shy at times. I love that they put everything in the burritos - I mean everything. You usually have to ask to add stuff, here is what to leave out. Makes them so yummy. And I'm a stickler for salsa.. if the place doesn't have good salsa, why go? The red & the green both have good heat & flavor. I kept an extra to use on my eggs the next morning. And I can't find a place around that has shredded beef option. We just moved to the area about 2 months ago and we heard and read a lot of good things about this place so we stopped by on a friday night to eat. Its a fairly small place but we were greeted a min or so after we sat down. The guy was very polite and nice. The salsa is chunky and was really good, a nice bit of heat to it. I had the steak tacos and my husband had 1 ground beef taco and 1 steak taco. Its nice they let you mix and match, and all tacos were $2.25. We both thought the steak was delicious. My husband said the beef was also good. The rice was alright but a little bland. My husband is a picky eater and they got his order right with no lettuce or tomato which rarely happens. Like many I have driven pass this little gem not thinking what was being served up. Now I stop in as much as I can. The food is delicious and fresh. The Guacamole is made fresh and the Chorizo Tacos are my favorite. Both the red and green homemade salsas are excellent. I have traveled though south Texas, Arizona, New Mexico and even California. Most small Mexican restaurants are good this is by far the best in the area. One item that needs improving is the Chile Relleno good, but way too much Chihuahua cheese. If I could give it less stars I would. I don't go out to eat to have microwaved food. Every time I came here, I saw them immediately microwave the meat, rice, and beans. All I can say is nasty! Not sure how it has any good ratings! Had ground beef tacos with beans and rice and honestly it was awful. I don't think my dog would even eat it! Wow - soooo good! The elote was fabulous - served in a little cup with cheese and seasonings. The tacos are delish. The tortillas were excellent. Loved the table hot sauce called Bufalo brand.
