China Bistro has the standard eggrolls/spring-rolls filled with cabbage, beansprouts (and in some cases ground chicken or pork) just like every other slightly cheaper eggroll in McHenry County, but I still love them, with their crisp, flaky, oily eggroll skin dipped hot into their packaged prefab fake-orange sweet sauce and that spicy yellow Chinese mustard that my mom so loved. As far as the service goes, there is a counter to order take-out and that's it. That said, the menu is huge: filled with many of the typical American favorites like 'General Tsao's Chicken', 'Orange Chicken', and 'Hot & Sour Soup'. My favorites were the Shrimp in Lobster Sauce, the Ma Po Tofu, and the Moo Shu Pork. I also enjoyed the shrimp Egg Foo Young, and the Singapore Noodles (very curry-like). This is a standard Americanized pseudo-Cantonese restaurant that will give you every type of mid-quality delivery dish that you could want. As far as the Ambiance goes - it's a 'take-out' place. This is a great Chinese restaurant. They have the best hot and sour soup around. Another favorite is the chicken noodle soup, it's really good if you're getting over a cold. The salt and pepper shrimp are so good, for such a simple dish it has great flavor. They also have really good crab Rangoon, the stuffing is very delicious. Lastly, We got the sesame seed chicken, and that was so delicious. FOO was FOOEY...no discernible chicken, actually had BEEF GRAVY. YUCK Egg rolls, I've had better from a box from Sam's. BEEF chop chewy, I meant CHEWY...NOT sure. Nothing had much flavor. We've been ordering from China Bistro almost as long as we've lived in the area (19 years now) and initially the food was great. But in the last few years, especially since COVID, the food quality has gone downhill while the prices keep increasing. We hadn't ordered from them in about a year but decided to try it one more time tonight to see if the food had improved. It hadn't. The fried rice tasted old, the shrimp wasn't fresh, there weren't any vegetables in it at all (just rice and shrimp), The egg rolls (which they initially forgot to deliver and had to bring separately) were inedible. All in all, everything tasted at least a week old. I'm not sure if the restaurant is under new management or they've just gotten sloppy in their food preparation, but for $40, I expect my food to be at least fresh. My husband and I agree that it's time to find a new Chinese restaurant. read more
