Take out only. This is one of our favorite Chinese food locations. Food is always piping hot and flavorful. We ordered the Mongolian Beef, Special Fried Rice and Crab Rangoon. The Mongolian Beef here is the best in the surrounding area! They have a small sitting area where you can wait for your food. Same lady every time you call or go in, not sure if it's a language barrier or not, but she came off as bothered when we asked for a to go menu. read more

I have been ordering from Gilbert's kitchen for seven years. I think that the food is very good. The only problem I have going to Gilbert's kitchen and ordering from them is the lady that rings you up and takes orders on the phone. I don't know if she's the owner or not however, her personality is to be desired. She acts very bitchy to her clients. I've experienced this personally several times. It's a huge turn off. It makes me wanna order from somewhere else. In which I have just not to deal with her. But I have to say the food is good. Sometimes it seems rather expensive. Today for three people the order came to $75. And it is takeout only no delivery. read more

Gilbert's Kitchen - Chinese Near Me - West Dundee, Illinois

I eat at Gilbert's a few times every month and I love the food. The lady that takes my order is so nice and remembers my name whenever she hears my voice. I wish more places gave this type of warm service. edit - I don't know why the review says I live in San Francisco. I live in West Dundee. read more

Ordering from here for years. Best carry out egg rolls. Bbq pork appetizer is tasty and a larger portion. Egg foo young ( vegetable) are made to order. Curry chicken is a winner, as is the chicken chow mein. We always over order as the portions are larger. Expensive for carry out but you have to figure it's for two meals read more

We ordered: Chkn fried rice Beef with pea pods Egg rolls Crab rangoons Chkn Lo mein Broccoli shrimp Chkn panang curry Beef Pad see ew Chn Pad thai Out of this list, everything was at least okay except the panang curry (which was pretty flavorless and definitely didn't contain curry). The shrimp and the beef Pad see ew were the stars. read more

First time I ordered from them in about 20 years because we moved. The old owners were so nice. The lady who took my order today was all around rude. Asking her about an egg roll order she couldn't talk to me about it, she shoved the menu at me. Tried to talk to her and she wouldn't have it. Will not be ordering anything from them in the future and the egg rolls were not as good as they used to be. Can patron another restaurant where they appreciate my business. read more

Oh, rats! This has been our go to for Chinese food but today's was a disaster. We ordered the lunch specials and they were not so special. Chicken chop suey with fried rice and spring roll was swimming in water, I blotted it up with 4 napkins It was not gravy it was water. The vegetables were bean sprouts dumped from a can and a few carrots. The teraki beef was also swimming in water, not gravy. The fried rice was rice mixed with beef stock, that's it nothing else. The crab ragoon was excellent! The spring rolls were ok. I am very sad about this, the food use to be so good. read more

Must have changed owners again as the last two times the fried rice had no taste, no wok hei flavor and barely any soy sauce and the Mongolian beef was mostly onions and tons of brown gravy. The sweet and sour chicken is still really good as well as the general tso's chicken. We've been going here since 2001 and it keeps going down hill. So sad as it used to be the best around here. read more

Was eating a potsticker , from Gilbert's Kitchen. And found a large piece of plastic inside it. Absolutely gross!!! Not to mention the guy who attended me was a bit rude, and threw my receipt on the counter when I had my hand out to receive it. read more

one Year Ago It was the Best Chinese Food Ever!!! Today it is the Worst tasting Chinese food Ever!!! what a shame that the New Owners changed their Recipes. believe me or try it again and see for yourself, what a waste of time and money!! read more

Absolutely blown away by the fact that I called to tell the owner of the restaurant how she not only forgot my pancakes with my order but also was rude to me. Followed by her hanging up the phone on me. What the heck is the matter with them. Been loving their food for over 20 years but not a chance in h*ll I will support that kind of treatment. Make sure you look at the recent Google reviews. It's not just me... The old ownership was kind and food was outstanding. Now it's hit or miss. read more

Even rating super hard core, this place gets 5 starts. I've never known a Chinese restaurant to be nearly as consistently delicious. We are regulars here, ordering almost every week for years, and have never been disappointed. On top of that, Ida, the woman usually at the front desk, is so friendly and a joy to see every time! I recommend Gilbert's Kitchen to literally everyone read more

Today a co-worker and I ordered food from Gilbert's Kitchen for the first time. The food was ok but the woman at the counter was VERY rude. We will NEVER go there again. I asked for napkins and she practically threw them at us. I asked for sweet and sour sauce and she stated that it was not included, which is fine, It was just her tone. read more

This is not a new review. But since the 80s and a small return visit around 2012. This place used to be the best Chinese in the country. Better than what I had in San Francisco, east coast, Utah, etc. One place in NYC has been as good. This place was my standard best for 35 years. And I call that 5 stars. Their sweet and sour is still best ever. read more

This place has some of the BEST Chinese food around. Never disappointed. The food always has great flavor. The egg rolls are giant sized and also very good. I ordered a small beef chop suey and a small egg drop soup and also a large moo shu chicken. Everything was outstanding. read more

I moved to the area from Chicago (Lincoln Square) in 2018, and Gilbert's has been my go-to Chinese carry out ever since. I had my spot back in Chicago (Lo's China Kitchen for those wondering) that I had been going to since 1998, so I thought finding a new spot wasn't going to be so easy but lucky I found Gilbert's quickly! In my opinion, the flavors and food quality are superior to any of the other nearby Chinese restaurants and you get pretty hefty portions that are great for leftovers the next day too. My favorite dishes are the kung pao chicken, Mongolian beef, sesame chicken, bbq pork fried rice, pot stickers/dumplings, and pan fried noodles; but there isn't one thing that I've tried from the menu that I didn't like. They even offer Thai dishes that are pretty darn good! I read the reviews about the service and I can see where people may perceive rudeness as the owner can be pretty curt at times; but, maybe because I'm a regular, I'm always greeted with a smile and friendly small talk whenever I stop in. I would highly recommend for good quick carry out Chinese! read more

New to the area and had to try somewhere for Chinese. Very impressed. Dishes were flavorful and fresh. Portions were outstanding. Could actually tell the difference between the 3 dishes we ordered! Many places give you the same ingredients no matter what you order and just change out the protein. This will be our go to in the neighborhood. read more

We ordered sesame chicken that came with fresh broccoli and the Mongolian beef was nice and spicy , both entrees were delicious. The crab rangoon was spot on. The real star of the meal was the egg rolls! Do not order from here without getting them. They are gigantic and scrumptious! read more

I have been patronizing Gilbert's for the last couple of years. I have not had a bad meal. Their egg rolls are big and hearty, hot and sour soup is delicious, but my favorite soup is the egg drop soup. Delicious and flavorful. Pot stickers are big and thick. Chicken on a stick is good, too. I've tried their combo fried rice it's packed with a lot of meat. Egg foo young Pattie's are huge. I have tried several chicken dishes from spicy to mild. Spicy can be spicy. Walnut shrimp is delicious, salt and pepper shrimp is a favorite. Not spicy, but peppery. Triple delight is another favorite these dishes are under the Gilbert's Popular Entrees. Here's to some good eats. Hope you try Gilbert's Kitchen. Enjoy. read more

I have been a loyal customer of Gilbert's Kitchen since the early 80's. Their food in terms of quality and portions were legendary. It was a grand experience to have their food especially when entertaining people from out of town who were endowed with some of the best Chinese food they've ever tasted. Upon introducing it to friends, they would travel as far as Chicago to partake in their cuisine. But as of November 2014 this all has turned upside down. The food portions shrunk, the quality fell off, and the taste of their food which we adored all changed. It's a genuine travesty to share this information to you as it appears to be as a direct result of new management having taken over this once distinguished establishment. This new management has created a genuine kitchen nightmare and unless they go back to what works, I will not be returning there ever again nor will anyone who has the same expectations of both quantity and quality of the past. read more

After being a customer of Gilbert's for the better part of 30+ years, my opinion of the operation has changed. The portions have shrunk, the quality of the food has declined and the prices have gone up. I ordered lunch there today and got a measly portion of Mongolian beef, a small scoop of fried rice and an egg roll that was no larger than my pinky finger. Completely disappointing on all counts. I will definitely be exploring other Chinese carry-out locations in the area. Hong Kong Chef just up the street has Gilbert's over the barrel. read more

I always request take out from Gilbert's when I visit my Boyfriend, as I live in another state. I always request the sesame chicken and an egg roll. The portions are enormous, and both are always spot on! The owners always remember what I like to order and are very kind. Can't wait until my next visit! read more

Omg DO NOT eat here! We ordered sweet and sour chicken and the sweet sour sauce was BURNT. I called to see if they'd replace it and told me it'd be a waste of time because that how their sauce is. Barf. read more

I am not sure what these other reviewers are talking about. I have been a loyal customer of Gilbert's since 2003. Their food is (and was) the best in the area. I get food from here on a weekly basis for myself and my my coworkers and we have yet to be disappointed. Food here is delicious! My favorites are the Orange Chicken and Mongolian Beef. They have added Thai food (haven't tried those yet) but the best part is that they now do DELIVERY!! :) That is wonderful, especially for work lunches. read more

I've tried several chinese carry out places throughout algonquin, lake in the hills, ect... and after a friend told me to try gilberts IM HOOKED. So far it's the best carry out chinese i've had in the burbs. Yes the prices are kinda high, not higher than most places, but the food is EXCELLENT and the portions are huge. one large item is easily 2 dinners, sometimes 3. I've yet had a bad meal from here. I just wish they were closer to me, its a 20 minute round trip drive. The sweet & sour sauce is GREAT and they sell it in a ketchup type squeeze bottle. I always buy one for 3$ and it last months. read more

I ate at Gilbert's last night while in town for business. I agree with other reviews that portions are huge, prices are a bit high and service is great. However, I'd rather get less food that is more interesting. Quality from a perspective as it was clean, fresh etc. was fine, but there were far too many onions, sprouts and other "cheap" ingredients and most of the ingredients I am used to in Chinese food were missing. I got the veggie moo shu and the chow fun. Both were greasy and largely flavorless. The plum sauce was bland too and there were more sprouts in the chow fun than noodles. I also don't feel as if this very authentic. read more

This place came highly recommended from a friend, and it didn't disappoint. The Crab Rangoon was the best I've ever had (and huge!). Flavors were excellent on every dish we ordered. This will be our new go-to for Chinese takeout! read more

The crispy spicy fried tofu or chicken are delicious! We also love the extra spicy version of Kung Pao chicken, as well as the Mexican fried rice ( think fried rice with lots of fresh jalapeños). It is our go to for Chinese which we do on a semi regular basis. read more

Food was average. Egg rolls were huge and greasy. Became very flavorful once the included ginger sauce is added - and ginger sauce helped cut the grease, making it more palatable to me. (Husband loved the grease - so it's personal taste I guess.) Egg roll alone is a meal. I had (small) wonton soup (enough for 2) and egg roll and that was all I could manage. Wonton soup was enjoyable. Tasted Beef Chow Mein - had an odd taste I didn't enjoy. Also tasted Orange Chicken - it's spicier (hot) than other restaurants in the area - it was ok. Husband, who loves orange chicken was unexcited by it. Service was great. Very friendly and kind. Would we go back? It's out of the way for us, so only if we happened to be driving by (unlikely) and were craving asian at that moment. Would we recommend? We might mention it as a possiblity to someone who lives in West Dundee, if asked. Wouldn't go out of the way to tell anyone about it. read more

We drive from Algonquin to get Gilberts, and have been doing so since probably the 80's. This is by far the best carry out Cantonese (at least I think it's Cantonese) in the area. No, it isn't authentic, but it's really good food to go! The egg rolls are TO DIE FOR, the Pork Fried Rice, General Tso's Chicken, POT STICKERS (!!!), Crab Rangoon, Mongolian Beef... all awesome! I could go on and on, because they have so many good (albeit Americanized) dishes, I should just post the entire menu. It's all good. Real, real good. Blows all other "Chinese Takeout" joints in the area completely out of the game. read more

I was spoiled by growing up near here. Their egg rolls are so huge (and delicious - lots of ginger!) that I commonly refer to them as "leg rolls" because they are comparable in size to the leg of an infant. Everything else I've tried from here has been good too. The family who runs the place is friendly and pretty quick at getting you your food. read more
