Had some better than expected Chinese food in Elgin. It looks like a dump from the outside, but rest easy because it looks like a dump on the inside. Gee N Jay's is one of the cheap Americanized Chinese classics. Only has orders to go. The majority of customers wouldn't want to eat inside thankfully. Found out about this after going past it a few times and after that we got curious. It's a pretty crappy looking building that even has a drive thru if you can believe it. This certainly isn't authentic stuff. A typical place with the big pictures of the entrees. They only had a few listed. Also has kiosks. These had the full menu though. It's about $13 for an entree. There's a few okay for vegetarians. I got the Kung Pao Tofu. This is a pretty standard version. Has a pretty good hotness. There's mostly tofu along with a few pieces of baby corn and peppers. Great place to get takeout, because that's the only option of course. It's located on Dundee at Page. They close pretty early in the evenings, and they're closed on Wednesdays. read more

First time trying Gee N Jays and would go again! We ordered two food platters orange chicken w/ shrimp fried rice, General Tso's chicken, with an order of wontons. The chicken was deliciously cooked and seasoned. Orange chicken and General Tso's are advertised as spicy but it does not have a crazy spicy kick at all. The shrimp fried rice was delicious I would definitely order that as its own side in the future. Wontons were boiled and filled with beef and veggies. The platter comes with an egg roll and drink. They also sell desserts like Ice cream, chocolate covered bananas, and funnel cakes! They did ask for payment over the phone which they apparently do after 7pm as they close at 8. Small location located right by los Cómales Elgin. More of a take out spot as it is super small and parking is very limited. Im a bit biased to this place, so, take my review with a grain of salt! We've been going here since I was a kid & I absolutely LOVE their food. My favorite is their shrimp fried rice and Kung Pao shrimp! Their ice cream is also sooo good. Much better than some other places I've been too. The staff is always so nice & tries to get to everyone as swiftly as they can. It's a small place, so, I understand why it can take some time to get orders out. Really great food - I had the Kung Pao chicken, and my 99-year old Great Aunt has been eating Beef Chop Suey for at least 50 years, so I guess that she's somewhat of an expert taster, lol. Neither of us had previously tried this unassuming, tidy place that also has frozen dessert specialties. This place was a nice surprise. I found it on the internet and ordered out on a weekday. The order was ready for pickup early so there wasn't a wait. Brought it home which is maybe 10 mins. And it was hot and very delicious. We ordered Szechwan shrimp and Mongolian beef which were both delicious. Next time I'm going to try the kung pao shrimp. Everything is fresh and tasty. My only complaint was the crab Rangoon. It was a bit doughy for my taste. Very thick which detracted from the crab mixture. Will try the vegetable egg roll next time. I've driven by this location so many times, and had no idea what kind of food they served until I looked them up on Yelp. We decided to give it a try, and were pleased with our choices. My favorite items that we had were the crab rangoons, strawberry tapioca, and the strawberry shortcake. We had other menu items as well and they were good, but I would say I prefer them from other locations. The employees were incredibly nice and the service was speedy. If I purchased food from here again I would call ahead and pick up as there is not a lot of seating and I felt rude taking up a table for a to go order. I can't give the fullest review ever, but I do have to say my experience was pretty good. My intentions were to just come and get ice cream because it was National ice cream day. Lol I was also kind of hungry and it was labeled as American (Traditional) so I was thinking to myself maybe they'll have cheeseburgers/hotdogs. I WAS WRONG. They offer only a few things in the style. Basically anything you can throw in the fryer: mozzarella sticks, nuggets, fries. But they also had their chinese food.. It just seemed like the oddest combination ever. The place was a little dingy. Outside wasn't very appealing, neither was the inside. It had too much going on on the inside. I get that they want to keep some things authentic and original, but some of that stuff just has to go. The place smells like burned food outside (nasty), but does smell better inside. On a more positive note the service was attentive and pleasant. The ice cream sundae was very good and pretty too! They did not skip out on the brownie bites in mine. I would like to try their chinese food to give a more full review. I heard its actually really good. Plus I do love that the have bubble tea. This place is super interesting!!! Sadly, this is not the best location, and I wonder what's going on behind the screen door, but the ice cream was great! There were about 15 flavors with a solid mix of traditional flavors, and also some really interesting new flavors. We got a double scoop of vanilla and Superman: blue moon, cherry and lemon...The vanilla was creamy, not vanilla bean, but an awesome texture and the superman was fabulous. It didn't taste like any of those individual flavors to me, but the combination was superb and it was so creamy. I would go back for ice cream! Now this is also a full service Chinese restaurant w/some fried American staples like onion rings, nuggets, pizza puffs, etc. they also have an array of scratch off lotto tickets to chose from with plenty of winning tickets displayed. And bubble teas and on display too. The whole thing is weird, but I bet it's good. The stand has been there for decades, and maybe I'll give the Chinese a try something. You may think it is odd that this is a Chinese restaurant selling ice cream. But do not let the oddness keep you away! This is the BEST ice cream my family has had- especially the dark chocolate peanut butter! Each bite has a rich chocolate flavor with just enough peanut butter to make your mouth want the next bite and crave more when your bowl is empty. Our other favorites are their sherbet and Superman.
