This is one of the best Chinese restaurants that I have been to. When it comes to their food, they don't skimp. Their egg rolls are huge. The other portions are amazing. The flavor of their food is fantastic. This is one of the best take out Chinese places there is. Of course, they only have one table, so eating there isn't the best option. What really stands out is their Wonton Soup. Unlike most restaurants that give you dish water with noodles and some green onions, Gilberts actually puts a ton of stuff in theirs. What separates theirs is not just the taste, but the amount of pork they put in it. I swear, they take a rib and just slice it up. It is amazing. The Wonton Soup itself is a meal, and well worth it. Gilberts is also affordable. I started going here as a kid in the mid-80s and the restaurant hasn't changed a bit. read more

It's hard for me to find a Chinese spot I like due to growing up in the city. When you get farther and farther away the food gets worse. This is the best Chinese you will find outside of the city of Chicago. I have one basic rule if your fried rice sucks then every item you order will as well. I started going to this place when I was a child and it started my love affair with Chinese food. Now that I have moved away I make a point to come here whenever I'm in town. Their egg rolls and fried wontons are wonderful, I've searched high and low to find ones that compare but my search has been fruitless so far. I got a to go order and I asked if they were new owners...they played it off like they have owned if for some time now. My family has ordered several times in the past 6 months. Every order has bee exceptional. We were very fortunate to find this place. We moved to the area 2 years ago and tried several take out spots and we were disappointed every time before finding Gilbert's Kitchen. The egg rolls are fantastic. I have been eating Gilbert's ever since I was a kid. There recipes have not changed since then either. I have my staples that I order and have never been disappointed. Please understand though that if you order the egg rolls, they are meal. They are the size of a small burrito. Not joking. It's standard Chinese take-out fare. There is no delivery option so be prepared to pick up your order. It's never terribly busy so the wait time to pick-up is usually no longer than 30 minutes. Obviously, it is busier on the weekends than during the week so keep that in mind. read more

It's not the same anymore. The Sweet and Sour Chicken I had was so bready and had barely any chicken inside, the chicken itself was rubbery and tasteless. Sesame chicken was also tough. I'm saddened to say Gilbert's is not the same. Like so many others my family has been going here for the last 35+ years. Sadly they have new owners and have changed things. I made a point to call and let them know (kindly) what I thought. They said they still had the recipes so lets hope they go back. Ugh. This used to be the best Chinese restaurant around. But no more.... My sister and I got take out for here last night and everything had a funky smell to it. Not an awful this is bad smell, just funky. The egg rolls tasted only like peanut butter. Not a piece of pork or shrimp to be found anywhere. Ugh...couldn't even finish it. My sister got chicken with peapods and water chestnuts, her go to. It had that strange smell to it and no flavor what so ever. If it didn't have the peapods, it would have had no color to it, just white. I had the Gilbert special. I couldn't tell which meat was pork and which was beef. Just an unidentifiable mess. Sadly, that is the last time I will go to Gilberts. The prices are very high and the food is a little worse than so-so. Don't waste your money read more

Very sad to say that the food has now gone down hill. I'm assuming new owners or management. I grew up eating here and would go way out of my way to pick it up. I have eaten here most of my a life (at least 25 years) and I am sad to report that that have changed all the foods that we usually order and have replaced things with lower quality ingredients. read more

Gilberts has been operating at this same location for a loooooooooooong time. My first time going was in the '70s and people would drive a good distance to get their carryout. That kind of longevity in the carryout business says they do it right. And, they do. As mentioned, their egg rolls are legendary, huge. The food is kind of Americanized, as the name Gilberts Chop Suey kitchen implies, but so what? Give it a try. P.S. I'm not sure what the first reviewer means by "There's not nearly enough room to sit down and eat if there are more then 2 people." Gilberts is carryout only. Gilbert's Kitchen is not the best out there but is certainly the best I've had in the area. If you're just feeding a couple people than it is a little pricey, but you get A LOT of food. That might make up for it but I'd suggest ordering the small size whenever possible. Just like others have said...the egg rolls are the biggest I've seen. I know has been in business over 20 years + , however has really gone downhill seen better days.My extended family is Chinese so I know what good Chinese food tastes like. It all depends on what you order, I think. Anyway, I've been there twice, liked it the first time, hated it the second time. Nothing, however, would be considered excellent. The standard fare, fried rice, egg rolls, etc. are OK. The other things we've tried from beef to chicken to seafood ranged from OK to poor. It ain't cheap either, so you don't want it to be hit and miss. Since there are so few so-called Chinese takeout options in the Elgin vicinity, I would have to say that Gilbert's is slightly better than Chinese Wok. Oh well. read more

WHAT.. has happened to this place?? I have lived in Dundee for 18 years and it's been several years since I ordered from Gilberts but decided to tonight. Nothing fancy - Szechuan Chicken and Cashew Chicken. I had the Szechuan - tasteless, chicken was very vert dry, the rice was clumped and sticky, I mean really sticky. The Cashew chicken.. much the same according to my partner.. tasteless. We both tried whatever we had in the house to "spice it up". Chili Garlic sauce, Golden mountain sauce, whatever.. in the end, we ate enough to at least not be hungry and threw the rest out. Too bad, this place used to be good. read more

Simply put the worst Chinese food I have ever had and overpriced. Incredibly salty and greasy. No leftovers here as it all went in the trash. We took a chance on this place, but learned our lesson. We will be going back to China Garden. This place is awful, stay far away. read more

I love, love, love this place. I have driven 45 minutes to get it. The only reason I would give it 4.5 stars is because of some inconsistency*. But usually it's fabulous and reliable. I've been coming here since my mom introduced it to us as kids, 25 years ago!! I've never found a place that serves fried rice as good as this place or as big sweet & sour chicken pieces!! Excellent food. The Mongolian beef is the best. We usually order the large which comes with white rice and can feed a family of 4 and then some. Very convenient to call in the order, which is usually ready in about half hour. We note that the food has a slightly higher heat (chili) index than most other similar restaurants of this cuisine, which is something we prefer. Definitely recommended. read more

Giant egg rolls are the biggest around. Their house sweet and sour dipping sauce is great. Hot spicy tofu was phenomenal. It is the soft tofu. Pot stickers were big pan fried dumplings and good. The rest of our order we would not get again. Mongolian beef had thick cuts of beef, some chewy. Sesame chicken was basically large chunk sweet sour chicken with sesame seeds. Lobster sauce shrimp were in a thick dark gelatinous sauce. Green beans were spicy with szechuan peppers, in a sauce. read more

Completely disappointed. I have been enjoying food from Gilbert's Kitchen for over 25 years, but I moved from the area 5 years ago. Today I took a 5 mile detour to pick up food from Gilbert's - but it is not the same restaurant. The food was terrible. The sign is the same and they say Gilbert's when they answer the phone - but the food was very bad. I tasted and threw away 3 egg rolls. We also ordered pot stickers and the stuffing had a grisly texture and bad flavor. We also threw those away. My receipt said "Ou's Pro Wok" - so at least Mr. Gilbert is still cooking delicious food somewhere - just not in West Dundee. read more

Ordered for takeout : Crab Rangoon, was tasty and creamy. Shrimp fried rice was ok with average flavor. Orange Chicken good pieces not dry and sauce was ok. Small Combo (shrimp, mushroom, chicken, beef) Egg Foo Yung over cooked almost burnt. Beef was dry and chewy. Will not order this item again. Restaurant seemed clean and bright. read more

We ordered Christmas dinner from here and everyone raved about their orders - Gilbert's was kind enough to take each families order and bag it individually and price it as well. They were easy to deal with and all 7 orders were ready and hot at pickup. We have ordered 2 times since and the food has been just as good. They remember my husband and allowed him to use an out of date coupon as well as making a dish he specially requested. read more

I have tried many Chinese restaurants and None of them are as good as Gilberts. You get alot for your money, they are always friendly, fast and food is always hot. I love there sweet and sour chicken, chicken fried rice and there beef and broc.!! I have never found another place with any where near as good as their egg rolls either. Went here based on several write-ups. Takeout only place. I have lived Near Elgin for 7 years now and still searching for any place than can do GOOD Chinese. So thought I'd try this place. I purposely ordered 2 entrees and eggrolls to give it a fair shake. Many reviews applauded the Sweet Sour Chicken so I ordered that and Kung Pao (since it's my fav) Went for the Sweet Sour Chicken first .. kinda awkward with large breaded chick strips and sauce was ho hum. After a few bites I realized I did not like .. too much breading deep fried for me. Moved on to the KungPao .. From the time I opened the package .. all I could smell was something like formaldehyde? and 2 bites in I just could not eat it anymore. It was awful. So just as I was ready to give up and go get something else for Lunch .. I opened the egg rolls .. and glad I did These were the highlight of the meal (and only one) So .. I continue my quest for Good Chinese out here near Elgin This place was not for me .. yuk except the egg rolls were good (only reason I gave 2 stars) PS If you get near Schaumburg .. check out Yu's Mandarin or Big Bowl both are great and nothing like them out here near Elgin read more

One of the very few places where you can get steamed veggies and chicken without sauce. Great if you're watching calories, sodium, etc or feeding a kid (like we are). Veggie chow fun was great. The noodles were the perfect texture and flavor. The egg rolls are huge and very good. Crab rangoons are also large and stuffed with a lot of filling. Will be ordering a again. For take out Cantonese this is about as good as you will find anywhere this side of San Francisco. I worked in a similar place many years ago and I know how they makes these dishes. Gilberts is pretty much on the mark with the way I expect the quality of ingredients to be. If you find better, go for it. I think the area is lucky to have it this good. As a regular customer of Gilberts for over 30 years it pains me to suggest to people to avoid this establishment if you're looking for good food. As a former Mongolian Beef and sweet/sour chicken lover, I found it very difficult to accept the new lack of flavor, tuffness and underdone quality of the meats. The price structure has jumped up way beyond the quality of food level that would warrant these increases. Finally the attitude received by the young woman at the counter when I called about my latest problem was very unprofessional. A family favorite for sure! The portions are huge for the price. I am a fan of the sesame chicken and the chicken fried rice. The eggrolls are incomparable to any other Chinese restaurant. The owners work both the kitchen and the counter themselves and make it one of the best Chinese food experiences that I've had. read more
