Basic looking Chinese restaurant in Algonquin. China Dragon 1 is pretty sketchy even for strip mall status to be honest. It has a minimal dining area with only a few tables. Cluttered with boxes of supplies and junk. The food is really cheap at least. A restaurant that is bare bones. It's one of those strip mall Chinese restaurants that is similar to all the others. This one makes the others look fantastic though. Had a part of the dining area closed off. There were only a few available tables. It's about $8 for an entree. The one here for vegetarians is the Tofu Vegetables. Sounds generic. This has mushrooms and pea pods. A lot more to get if wanting something more authentic. There's pad Thai as well as many others. For sure it actually is one of the best Asian restaurants around here. It's located in the plaza with the post office. They're closed Tuesdays. read more

We have been big supporters of China dragon for about 8 years now through Covid and all - telling everyone we know and the Mchenry food critic site that they are the best bringing in multiple additional customers...Tonight we dropped $130 on food. We got the order delivered by uber because that was the only option for delivery China dragon had. Our order was missing items I called the restaurant asking if it was there and got left behind. I had to repeat what I had in front of me as food twice and then was cut off and told it's An uber issue and I have to deal with them! I WAS going to ask for them to make the items missing and I would have picked it up - instead after that statement I was hung up on. We will no longer be ordering from China dragon. Now that I have eaten here twice I feel informed enough to write a review. Chicago's Northwest Suburbs are a massive desert of good ethnic food. That said. China dragon 1 stands out as a place that fits the mold, only better. For the most part this is only a take-out joint. Although there are tables one would probably be more comfortable eating at a bus station. But you can eat here, which my partner and I did twice. This place is all but barren when it comes to being an actual restaurant. However, the bathrooms are clean. Food-wise, there are good things, not so good things, and maybe some bad things to eat - but there are no excellent things. The best thing that my partner ordered was the 'Chicken Pad Thai', which she got twice (the first time being better). The first thing that I ordered was the Shrimp in Lobster Sauce, and it was actually good.: the shrimp were large and there were a dozen of them (and the lobster sauce was just okay, but it worked). All Lunch Specials are around $12 and come with one eggroll, one soup, and a heaping helping of chicken fried rice. The eggroll was a common take-out eggroll, with a plastic packet of sweet sauce. The chicken fried rice however was undercooked (meaning a little hard), and it had very little flavor. My second time here I ordered the Sweet & Sour Shrimp, which was not nearly as good. Through the eyes of a budget conscious restauranter, the Sweet & Sour Shrimp was clearly a chance to use the old shrimp meant for other dishes, which had become dry and unusable in dishes like my previous Shrimp in Lobster Sauce. Instead, they soaked the shriveled shrimps in batter and deep fried them. My dish was served in a Styrofoam container on top of a huge pile of chicken fried rice, with a separate plastic container of corn syrup with a few Asian flavorings and some red food coloring. SO DON'T ORDER the Sweet & Sour Shrimp. Aside from these issues this place has a Great Take-Out Menu. It is actually one of the best places (probably) in the area to get Chinese food to take home. My suggestion is to buy some extra ingredients at the store first (like green peppers, onions, garlic, cabbage, bean sprouts, & Tofu) and then to get your many dishes from here and spruce them up yourselves (my sweet & sour would have been 10x better with green peppers, onion, & pineapples chunks in it - and some shredded cabbage, bean sprouts, and firm tofu would have made my girlfriend's Pad Thai even better). If you want take-out Chinese in the Algonquin-Lake in the Hills area, this may be the best place to get it. read more

Used to be a great spot, unfortunately it has gone down hill drastically over the past year. Delivery now takes 1.5-2hr even after they confirm an hour. They never include sauce or chopsticks, which is usually a standard. Decided to give them one more chance by calling to order instead of online. I am a fan! My wife and I were wanting some Chinese takeout and this was recommended to us. It is a bit of a drive for us (20-25 minutes round trip) but the food is worth it. Why do I like it? 1. Nice level of spice: the General Tso was really good a bit spicy to let you know you are eating something with spice vs. sweet & sour. 2. Decent price: we spent around $30 but got large portions, well packaged, and very tasty. 3. Efficient: your food was ready when they said it would be ready. Back to the spice. We got Szechuan Beef, General Tso and Combination Rice; all were large portions so it was in the mid-$30's in cost. The spice was really good - I get tired of places where you want some heat and you just walk away not getting any. The combination fried rice was fantastic. So far everytime I have ordered here I have been happy with the service. Dine in or delivery the portions are huge the flavor is good and it is an all around good meal with leftovers for the week! Delivery Service 5/5: Very friendly guy and I never have to wait too long for my food. *Remember the delivery fee is not a tip! Always tip if you have good service in the food industry (at least thats how I live by.) Dine-In 4/5: the staff is attentive and does not bug you too much, however the bathrooms were not in the best shape and the floors a tad sticky feeling. Since this place has been open, it has really evolved. Now they have poker machines in the little side room in the front. One thing that hasn't changed is the out-of-place photograph of women, whose topless backs painted as album covers. I've dined here twice and have ordered out dozens of times. Service is decent and on par with what I expect from a no-frills Asian restaurant. I have had no great problem with it, but don't expect to be checked on very often. As far as food, everything I've had has been great here. Top favorites include the Pho (which is the cheapest in the area), the Lemongrass Chicken Wings, and the Wonton Noodle Soup. The beauty of this restaurant is the sheer variety of options from different Asian cultures. If you have an allergy or are a picky eater, you'll certainly find something great here! read more

If, like me, you're fortunate enough to have travelled to China, then you know that American Chinese food is nothing like what you'll get on the other side of the globe. And that's okay! When you're in the mood for the type of Chinese food they eat on TV and in movies, look no further. Like any good Chinese place, China Dragon 1 features an expansive array of options. Seriously, the menu has a higher word count than many papers I've written and it's potentially just as persuasive (I have it beat in the narrative format, I'm afraid). I am a fan of heat and the little chili peppers next to spicy dishes are like glowing targets for my eyes. It's almost too easy. While the food is consistently good (and the spicy dishes ARE spicy), what's better is the service, particularly for those ordering delivery. They appreciate their frequent customers and this is evidenced by the occasional extra appetizer in your order and literal mountain of soy sauce/sweet and sour/spicy mustard packets you'll receive. After about three orders you should be able to fill your bath tub. Do note that most of the carryout/delivery will be in plastic containers, NOT the stereotypical white carton (though rice and pot stickers will be). So if that's what you're going for, there may be some DIY on your end. The rest of us will just get busy chowing down. read more

The egg rolls were tasteless, the kung pao was nearly soupy and the service could not have been less engaging. The only reason this place is staying in business is because of lack or options nearby. Food was good. I ordered egg drop soup and crab rangoon. The crab rangoon was not the best I have had, but was ok. My sister ordered the sesame chicken and liked that. I like their smoothies too and that they offer boba. I get the strawberry mango smoothie with light boba. Their COVID precautions are good. They wear masks and have the entire kitchen area plexi glassed with just a little cubby hole for customers to get their orders. It's so hard to find a decent Chinese restaurant, but after eating at China Dragon, my fiancé and I have finally found our new go-to since moving. Shrimp fried rice was overflowing. Tofu delight was exceptional. Vegetable lo was FABULOUS. Orange chicken had a terrific flavor. Not pictured: Vegetable egg rolls that were to die for and super delicious crab rangoon. I just picked up carry out. We ordered 2 very common entries. Orange chicken and General Tso chicken. Upon opening we could not find a difference in the two. Visually no different. Neither had a sauce or a flowing juice in the container. Zero heat, no orange flavor. Nothing. It was just glazed chicken sticky and dry, one had broccoli. One had small corn and misc cooked vegetables under the chicken pieces. Again, dry. This was the worst Chinese food I've ever tried in my life. And it was pretty expensive. We tossed most of it in the trash. I'm embarrassed to admit. The chicken was so dry it never should have been served. I can't imagine people enjoying this place. read more

Surprisingly delicious Chinese food in Algonquin! Chinese with a dash of sushi. China Dragon I can be found in a strip mall of the very busy Algonquin Road. Who'd thunk friendly service and tasty Asian food can be found in such a place? I ordered takeout through Eat24 (they send $2 off coupons almost every weekend) and everything was ready to go as soon as I got there to pickup. Everything was packed very well which no spillage which is an important part of carryout. I have an obsession with sweet potato rolls and this was the cheapest I think I've ever seen on a menu. It's oddly priced at $4.36 and comes with 6 pieces. I loved it and I'm pretty sure it tasted extra great because of the cheap price tag. The small sesame chicken is $6.99 and a big portion...I can't imagine how huge the large is! The flavor on the sesame chicken was sweet and much better than I expected. It was on par with some of the best sesame chickens I've had across Chicagoland. I shouldn't have doubted China Dragon I but must admit I went in with low expectations. I was so pleasantly surprised the extremely friendly service and really on point food. I will absolutely be back when I'm in the area again. read more

I haven't had Chinese in let's see....over two years. Wasn't intentional, just happened. Prior to that, I could have it a couple times a year, but was most always disappointed. Since I lived in China, I just haven't been satisfied with "Americanized Chinese." Even going to major city Chinatowns and asking for the dishes I preferred would bring a woeful look and an apology "we just can't get those ingredients in the U.S." I usually fare a little better with dim sum - most places haven't Americanized it as yet. I suppose that will happen in time. We'll see scrambled egg and sausage steamed dumplings, or some such. Oh well. One major difference is surely the cost of ingredients in China vs the US. The Chinese aren't tempted to saturate dishes with inexpensive "fill" like in the US, and the US restaurants idea of fill is vegetables you'll never see in China - zucchini, carrots, and such. And of course, there is always the "American invented" dishes on Chinese menus in the US, like "Crab Rangoon," supposedly crab flakes, cream cheese and scallions in a deep fried won ton wrapper. Seems these first appeared at the Polynesian themed chain "Trader Vics" in the mid 50s. They have devolved to be much heavier on the cream cheese (a product that was never available in Asia until the past few years), and if there is any crab at all, it's that artificial crab. Sigh. I was back in suburban Chicago to see a client and wanted something different, looked for places that would deliver to the hotel, and found China Dragon via one of the food delivery services. Ordered shrimp with cashews, a couple egg rolls, and the crab rangoon. The entree was OK, but I didn't care for the egg rolls at all, there was some 'under taste' that I couldn't identified, and the "rangoons" were completely devoid of crab. The restaurant does furnish you with ample quantities in the servings, it's hot, delivered quickly, and inexpensive. And they furnish you with a couple years worth of soy sauce, sweet and sour, and mustard packets.
