This has been a regular date-day spot for me and my wife. The Al Pastor at this restaurant is the best I've had anywhere.

They've been here 10 years. So easy to miss! In a little shopping plaza. I got tacos and burrito made with steak. Meat tasted good and the overall flavor was good. Nothing spectacular but definitely edible. Portions - portions were a little small on the burrito. It was definitely a little thin. Although their tacos had plenty of meat and the tortillas are regular sized. This place definitely deserves a try. Give it a shot and see what you think. I'll definitely be back. It's nearby enough that I'll make the trip for the food they have. Plenty of parking outside from the times I've been there. They also have a place for indoor dining. The place is not huge, but can comfortable sit a few parties in there. read more

I ate here a while ago and had a burrito that was just very...bland and unremarkable. El Fuego wasn't answering their phone so figured I'd give this place another try and get some steak tacos, something that's hard to do wrong. When I called they asked if I wanted flour or corn tortillas which was a big red flag. Prices were pretty high. Tacos were very bland and lacking taste and they were using some weird white corn tortillas, the kind you typically don't see at any real Mexican restaurant. Back in Chicagoland for the last time this year, had a craving for Mexican food since Mrs. Burgerdogboy has been on a cooking strike lately and she makes some fine Mexican platos. I was out in the NW burbs, some areas of which are increasingly populated with people of various Latin heritages, and mercados and taquerias are popping up like pop-ups. Not wanting to cause confusion among any potential customers, one entrepreneur labeled his restaurant as plain as plain could be: "Algonquin Mexican Restaurant." (AMR) With tables that will accommodate thirty and a counter with room for eight more, the AMX serves breakfast, lunch and dinner everyday with hours from 10A - 8 PM. They were doing a brisk take-out business, but I was in the mood to be waited on, so I took a seat a booth looking out at the Algonquin intersection the corners of "Road Construction" and "Needs Road Construction." The gajillion dollar downtown bypass appears that it will take another generation of works before it is actually finished, and from where I sit, will do little do alleviate the REAL area traffic problems, which are East - West, while the bypass is north-south. DOH! The menu is straight forward and straight Mexican. Order ala carte or a plate which includes beans and rice. (Me and the Mrs were forever spoiled by the refried beans in Aberdeen, WA one day). Turns out tho that these were pretty tasty. I wish I had ordered an additional side of them. (The ones in Aberdeen were so tasty we ate two orders at the table and got an order to go). Polished off the complimentary chips and pico, and then I ordered three tacos, chorizo, shredded beef, and ground beef. Chicken, steak, pork, and pork skin were other options. No tongue here. I thoroughly enjoyed the tacos, even tho I had them with the gringo flour tortilla. They come loaded with lettuce, tomato, and sour cream. A second "filling" option is straight chopped onion and cilantro. Should have tried that. In order of favorite - chorizo one, then shredded beef, and lastly ground beef. The accompanying rice was nothing to write home (or here about) so i won't. I rarely eat rice as a side anymore. Can't say why and sure you don't care. Circumstances were such that I spent a fair amount of time in Mexico this year, and of course little North of the border can match local street food in Juarez or TJ, just like after living in China I was spoiled to that type of food in the US. But in any case, if you happen to be driving around the NW burbs, or live in Algonquin, Dundee, Lake in the Hills or Crystal Lake, the Algonquin Mexican Restaurant is worth a stop with freshly prepared food at great prices. read more

We liked this place but stopped going when: they charged extra for hot sauce to-go (but you could have as much as you wanted if you dined in) and when we saw the meat being handed without any gloves. It was a turn off. read more

Went there based on other Yelpers reviews. Sadly to say this time was disappointment. Average taste food nothing to brag about. Stopped by this week around 2, restaurant looked abandoned no customers and even their staff were chatting since not a single table was occupied, sat down got the menu, the guy at the register seemed nice, I ordered steak burrito, served complementary chips and salsa, burrito arrived short after, no complain so far, however the meat was ground beef it was definitely not steak burrito, I asked the guy at register about it and showed him it was ground beef served he insisted its steak, so I didn't bother finished my food, paid the bill and left. I don't know how anyone can consider this food. This is easily the least authentic mexican food I have ever eaten. I like places that are quality, and this isn't. Sorry, I just don't have a lot to say here. It's bland, it's generic, the food we make at home from premade tortillas and cans of beans on a lazy day is still miles above from what I can get here. This is definitely a one and done location. I can't recommend anyone considers going here unless they completely improve on their quality. To be honest - I was terrified to try this place. It is right off of RT 31 next to Sugar Hills Bakery and neighbors to the OLD Algonquin Post Office. From the outside, it does not look like a place I where I would want to eat. I am so glad I took the advice of a friend and tried this place out. The Chicken Burrito was as big as my head. I always order my burritos without lettuce (I think lettuce belongs in a bowl, not on my burrito, sandwich, etc.). I half expected the burrito to be smaller because there would be no lettuce filler... but I was wrong. It was big, hot and delicious. The food is super fresh tasting and I love that they have an open kitchen. Run, don't walk to Algonquin Mexican Restaurant. You won't be disappointed. read more

I think I can sleep a little more soundly knowing there's a good Mexican restaurant to my house. Thank you Algonquin Mexican Restaurant. I drove by this place several times, finally I yelped it and voila it's over 3 stars so why not give it a try! I'm glad I did. I ordered to go. The young man (assuming owners son) took my order, was very kind and in 10 minutes I had my order made. Bonus of this place, wait for it.... FREE SOUR CREAM! Yep you heard it, they don't charge .75$ for something that cost a few cents. The meat was flavorful and the burrito even came cut in half so it was easy to eat. And it was gone in about 5 minutes leaving me with a very satisfied stomach. Don't let the looks fool you try them out! read more

I visited Algonquin Mexican Restaurant with my husband and son last night. We've never dined in before and haven't gotten takeout there in years (mainly because we don't live that close). I loved their corn tortillas and had a taste for them last night. I wasn't too crazy about the tortilla chips that came with the pico de gallo while we waited. They were so hard that my son couldn't eat them. They were ok for me and my husband. We ordered the ham & cheese quesadilla from the kids menu (which my son loved), the taco dinner for my husband (he was very pleased), and the steak huarache for me. I've never had a huarache before and it's basically a steak taco (the meat and toppings) over a fried masa base. Pretty good, but the masa base was hard to cut through. My biggest issue with this restaurant was the size. Well, not just the size, but the ability to be tuned into other tables' conversations because of the size of the place. While we were there, 2 different parties came in (both 2 guys) and sat down. Now, I can't blame the patrons for this because they are adults out to dinner (although they could have been more mindful that there was a 4-year-old at the next table), but all I heard were f-bombs, countless other curse words, and intimate details of their relationships. They weren't being loud or disrespectful or anything, but the fact that there was no music playing in the background made it impossible not to pick up on a few words. I'm glad I had headphones in my purse and I was able to let my son watch YouTube videos on my phone so he wouldn't be subject to the nearby conversations. We ate quickly and were outta there. If there was music playing in the restaurant, I really think a lot of the noise from the conversations would have been minimized. Absolutely loved this place! While yes, I do think there are a few options that do beat it in the area, Algonquin Mexican Restaurant shouldn't be overlooked. Had a chicken burrito and a quesadilla and enjoyed both of them quite a bit! Quesadilla was great and tasted wonderful and flavorful. My chicken burrito also was fresh. Place is nice and clean. My wife had the Huarche, my son steak tacos and I had the Bistek; my family wasn't too positive when we drove up but when we started eating my son (age 12) said, this is awesome food! We ate it all - it was all good. Going back, I would get steak tacos and chicken tacos. Their sauces are really good and the food is cooked by people who know what good food tastes like. They made the flautas from scratch; cooked the chicken on the grill with green chilies, rolled them up in their homemade tortillas, and fried them up. Delicious! We have found this little gem and it it truly a find! The chile rellenos are made from scratch and taste just like heaven. The food tastes like its made fresh with love from the heart. I can't believe that I have yet to leave a review for this place. I have been going to Algonquin Mexican Restaurant since the week they opened and have been here at least 30+ times. Is this the best Mexican food i've ever had, not by a long shot. But it is the best Mexican food in the LITH/ALG area which is good enough for me. They KILL the crappy overpriced el norte. The food is consistent and good, i don't care too much for the red or green salsa's but for $5 the burrito is a great buy. Priced how it should be like the city places. For anyone that hasn't tried it, get a taco or burrito with Alambre (Steak with onions and peppers) it has really good flavor. read more

I find myself going here more and more often. This is a great local authentic Mexican restaurant with fast service and great staff. The first time I went there I had a hard time deciding what to eat. I am not a fan of spicy food nor am I familiar with what some ethnic Mexican foods are. The owner was very friendly and explained a lot of their menu items to me. I have tried the chicken burrito once and the chicken tostadas every other time I have ordered from here. They give you a hefty amount of food for the cheap price that you pay. They cook everything to order in front of you and you can watch them complete your meal. I continually order the chicken because I am not a big red meat eater. The chicken is shredded and moist, the seasonings do not overpower the taste of the chicken. I have learned to order two tostadas, I am able to eat one before feeling full and save the second one for the next day's lunch. I have ordered tostadas at other Mexican restaurants and usually end up with a tiny thing in front of me. These tostadas are pleasantly large with toppings piled on. They have a small eating area if you choose to eat in. I have always ordered to-go, so I can not comment on how it is to dine in the restaurant. read more

Best Mexican food I've had in a while. The guacamole is made to order every time. It's literally made 3 minutes before it hits your table. The chips it comes with were crispy and not greasy. I ordered the three taco dinner with ground beef. The meat wasn't greasy at all and seasoned perfectly. It wasn't dry at all either. Favorite is in LA. We could not stay in restaurant as there was a nasty musty odor. So we took food home, but had to toss it as it just was unacceptable. This is the kind of place that it would be easy to drive by dozens of times and not think to stop, but by all means, make sure you try this restaurant if you haven't. It's small and the kind of place that has clearly focused on making good food rather than distracting you with decorations, music, etc. It's quiet and simple inside, and the food is just good. The horchata is great, and obviously homemade. I don't know if the salsa is too, but it's very good as well. I had the shredded beef burrito, which I loved. The only drawback was that the beans and rice were just kind of typical. Good, but not memorable. My wife had the chicken with mole, and loved it as well. As other have said, this doesn't look great from the outside (practically a dive). Inside is clean, servers are friendly. can't ask for fresher food, even the guacamole is made scratch. Seems like they mix their own meat in the back. Prices are really good too, I'd go to this place over tacos el norte any day. Also there's more seating than described. There's about 5 counter seats, and at least 4-5 tables, just don't expect giant restaurant. read more

An enjoyable experience. Attentive, friendly service, really good food. This appears to be a mom & pop family operation. It's a storefront, no-frills place that looks like it might have been a diner of some sort. The cooking area/kitchen is open to the dining room, which is nice because you can see your food being made. The chips and salsa that come to the table were kind of ordinary, but still not bad. 3 in our party. Had the chicken burrito dinner, a chicken fajita dinner, a lengua torta & a huge serving of cocktail pulpo (octopus). The portions on the combination dinners were good sized, and very good. The bread on the torta could have been a little crisper, but that was minor. The cocktail pulpo had large avocado slices on top, and was pleasingly spicy without being over powering. This is another one of those places I've driven by 1000 times, and am glad I finally checked into. Dinner for the 3 of us was under $50 with the tip. I am from Chicago and have migrated to Algonquin recently to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city. I have love mexican food and was privileged growing up in a mainly latino area of the city so I know authentic and quality. I have to say I was very impressed with the Algonquin Mexican Restaurant. I ordered the steak taco dinner and thought it was terrific. They only get four stars though because 1.) red salsa kind of sucks & 2.) I asked for corn tortillas but was given flour. I will be going back again for sure and look forward to introducing the place to my wife. Place looks like a dive for sure but give it a shot.
