A lovely tea experience. I joined them for a Saturday afternoon tea with a friend. Everything we were served was tasty. I could tell everything was homemade. They offered two teas throughout the experience and offered to make another pot of either one once we were done eating to drink as we sat and chat. The tea included a nice salad, two scones (a savory and a sweet), finger sandwiches, and desserts. A good amount of food. The teapot got about 4.5 cups of tea to share with the table. The restaurant was decorated for the holidays. A really cute restaurant. I'll definitely return for afternoon tea and would also go for dinner. read more

Sadly this restaurant has gone down hill. We took our family of 7 just after Christmas. There was a limited menu but we ordered the Beef Wellington well in advance. When we arrived, we were told where our table was...no staff escorted us to the table. After several minutes our drink orders were taken. They had no diet soda option. The sodas that were ordered were served in the can. Mixed drinks were ok(ish). Small wine selection. Meal ordered was placed and we told them we had ordered the Beef Wellington. The wait staff returned and informed us that another party canceled their Beef Wellington order but unfortunately our order had been the one that been canceled. They had no other beef option on the menu as they were out of the petite Beef Wellington that was on the menu. (and we were an early reservation) This should've been the cue to leave but we stuck it out. Caesar salad was lettuce, a few croutons and dressing. No grated Parmesan Cheese offered. Soups were luke warm at best. Entrees were not on par for a fine dining restaurant and again, luke warm at best. Olive Garden has better pasta dishes. Sides were cold green beans (manager said this was intentional as it's some sort of cooking style) and 2 very small red potatoes. We didn't bother with dessert. Service was subpar. Staff didn't realize our water carafes were empty after we filled our glasses at the beginning of the meal. Entrees were served at different times. Staff did not check on the table until we were all but finished with the meal. Sadly the restaurant needs a good deep clean. They tried with the decorations. It's not the same from years past. Definitely not worth the amount of money we paid. And that's sad knowing what Alfred's once was. read more

I have been coming here for special occasion meals for years. You just can't beat the ambiance here. I love old homes and can spend a lot of time just admiring architectural details and the beautiful woodwork in this space. What really puts it over the top is that we haven't had a bad meal here, either. I have ordered the steak Dianne here a few times and love the spectacle of the sauce being made and flambeed tableside. My most recent visit was actually for an early evening tea service. It was a wonderful way to decompress after work with friends. They offer unlimited pots of tea and each one was a different flavor. The tea service includes a salad course, a two-tiered tray with scones, sandwiches (crust-less, of course!), small bites and a selection of desserts. The $35/person price is fantastic as you get a generous amount of food, unlimited tea, and wonderful service. Our waiter was very nice and the owner stopped over several times. She was very friendly and chatted with us for a while. They are just starting the tea service and offer weekends and special occasion dates as well. read more

Worst meal ever! Went here expecting to have an amazing meal as we have in the past. They did a limited menu for the holiday for $75 per person. My husband and I sat down and a plate for two was placed in front of us with 2 bugles filled with dip 2 celery sticks and 4 pieces of pepperoni- that was the first course. Second course my husband got meatballs 3 minis on a plate and I the salad without dressing no dressing present. Third course we both got beef tips. Awful presentation- looked like vomit on a plate with three grapes why??? We ordered coffee which came out cold and peanut butter pie which was terrible. I had glass of wine and my husband soda and bill came to $204. I actually thought we were being spoofed. Place is terribly run down. So sad. read more

We were there 29 years ago to celebrate our first anniversary, it was a great experience then and now . We went back in October to celebrate our 30 th Anniversary.They are closed Monday and Tuesday but my husband called the owner and she was so sweet , she opened the restaurant just for us .The chef came in just for us and cooked us an amazing dinner . Unfortunately, you get busy over the years and living in Harrisburg, we have just not come down to Alfred's in a long time (13-14 years). We are so glad we went and we wish we have come more over the years! For anyone who has not been here, Alfred's is a fixture. The restaurant is in a restored Victorian mansion. Everything about the building is absolutely Victorian beautiful. When you go there, you are going there for the food and the history. Everything we ate was perfectly flavored and cooked. Nothing tasted like restaurant food. They have a very nice by-the-bottle wine selection and in our state, you may now cork and take home the remainder, so just get a bottle. For appetizers, we had the blackened scallops and the muscles diavlo. Both dishes were executed beyond perfect. For dinner, I have the lobster tail (you get two) and my husband had veal genovese. I asked for my drawn butter to be mixed half with a sweeter white wine and the chef did this for me. The lobster was perfect and the grilled vegetables on the sides of our dishes were crazy good. My husband's description: "I don't know what they did to the carrots but it is something." I did not try his veal but he said it was very good. Dessert was a whole other level of specialness. We chose the cherries jubilee. This was made tableside and the flambe was mesmerizing with a blue flame almost 2 feet tall (maybe 3 closer to 3 feet). This dessert is for two and my husband never gets dessert but he usually shares some of mine. It was so good, we finished two large bowls of it. The ice cream that they served it over was like eating flavored air; it was not anywhere near too sweet and the flavor was very delicate. I do not know where that ice cream comes from but I could get fat on it. I hate when people complain about mundane things in their Yelp review and I am not going to do that but I am going to mention a few things that could use updating (but I will keep that to a minimum because the food is sooo good that I can overlook these things). The menu does not need to be changed (food excellent, see above) but the format that it is printed is a little dated. Service is good enough meaning everyone is very nice, attentive, and accommodating but do not expect the typical cache of skills found in high-end restaurant servers and this is probably a good thing because you will feel very comfortable at Alfred's. What I would love to see at Alfred's would be a larger bar in one of the downstairs rooms (possibly the Burgundy Room, where we ate). The current bar is upstairs and very small (seats 4). The classic negroni was spot on and served in a squared rocks glass. I think having an actual bar room would attract and accommodate solo guests and travelers coming in at the airport. This would attract flyers who may be interested in coming but then feel that they are underdressed for the dining room. A Victorian tavern room could be popular. His first kiss was on the way home from work with a girl who also worked there. He doesn't remember her name but she made him nervous. Sounded like the nicest place in Middletown at the time. I came here for the sole purpose of trying Beef Wellington and I was not disappointed. The building itself it very luxurious or perhaps more so chic. There's lots of ornate features such as the stain glass windows which are a nice touch to the dining experience. Now, it goes without saying that given the prices, this is more of a special occasion restaurant, but for me trying Beef Wellington was a special occasion and it was worth every penny. This was such an amazing evening for my husband and I! I came across this restaurant randomly and we drove almost 6 hours to get here just to plan a special evening! The food was delicious and the staff was so pleasant and wonderful! We had the Portabella mushrooms stuffed with Gorgonzola to start. Next we shared the seafood terrine which was also delicious. Our entrée was the beef Wellington which we had to order 24 hours in advance and it was cooked to perfection! For dessert we had the cherries jubilee!! read more

We have been here several times, and the food is always amazing. I was concerned that take-out would not be as good, but the food was as good as I remembered it. I had the veggie ricotta, which was loaded with goat cheese and delicious fresh vegetables. We also had two orders of tortellini with meat sauce, which was devoured with gusto. Both have had it before and always rave about it. The maple glazed salmon was just as good as it was in house, which is to say fantastic. The shrimp and scallops al dino had perfectly cooked seafood and was extremely rich. In short, the take-out is every bit as delicious as dining in. I can't recommend this place enough! read more

Alfred's Victorian is my favorite restaurant for celebrating anytime something special happens. Our last visit was to celebrate our 51st anniversary. I ordered Steak Diane and it was fabulous. In face, all of the things we ordered were exceptionally good. My husband ordered chicken with fettuccine and that pasta was enlightening. I have made the mistake of avoiding the pasta, because I didn't think it could be much better than what I cook. Wow, I was so wrong about it. The pasta was amazing and the white sauce was simply outstanding. Now I need to get reservations for my birthday and try more of Alfred's pasta! read more

My sons and wives had reservations for Sat night. When they arrived there was no reservation waiting for them. One son who handled things on their end had emails proving a reservation was made. AV basically said tough beans. They made no attempt whatsoever to right the wrong. Reminds me of the Seinfeld episode where Jerry thought he had reserved a rental car at the airport only to find they had nothing for him when he got there. Like Jerry said "you know how to take the reservation, you just don't know how to keep the reservation." Big black mark for a supposedly high end place. My husband took me here to celebrate Valentine's Day. We went on a Saturday evening. We'd both heard many good things over the years and I've always wanted to go. Parking wasn't easy, eventually found some up the street. The "mansion" is unique inside, very old timey & quaint. It didn't look like a mansion, more of an old house that was well maintained. I really liked it, very different like going back in time. We sat upstairs at a window in a super quiet room. If we spoke louder than a whisper it was like everyone could hear our conversation & vice versa. They need some classy background music. The wooden shutters kept hittting my husband in the shoulder and there was an electrical wire hanging down next to his arm. And our table was wobbly, super annoying. The chairs had wheels which I loved but my husband hated lol. He said he kept sliding away from the table. I liked that I didn't have to hop & drag the chair to get close to the table. They didn't have Corona for him, he was disappointed. I ordered a mixed drink which was very good. I ordered an appetizer which was basically bread w/ crab meat. Although it tasted good it was literally 3 small, silver dollar sized, skinny discs of bread w/ maybe half a teaspoon of crab mixture on each one. Talk about skimpy! Appetizers are meant to be shared but that was barely enough for one person. The bread & butter took forever to come out. It was nothing special. They seemed to have a limited menu. Their vegetable of the day was Brussel sprouts. That's it, no other choices. I found that odd as most people don't care too much for Brussels sprouts. Also many of their menu items have prosciutto. What's up w/ that? I ordered the crab cakes w/ Brussel sprouts (luckily I like them) & mashed potatoes. I enjoyed the taste of all my food. However the crab cakes had a bunch of fillers & were a bit soupy. For the caliber of this place I expected much better quality. My husband definitely didn't order the right thing. He wasn't seeing anything appealing so he screwed up & got the chicken Alfredo. His noodles were undercooked & he was not a happy camper. Side note, the bathroom sink had me laughing. It's the perfect height for a five year old. I'm only 5'1" and I had to bend down to use it ROFL! Quite strange. As expensive as this place is they really need to step their game up. We will never return. Instead we'll stick w/ the Progress Grille in Harrisburg. The quality of their food and variety is totally worth the price tag & ALWAYS consistently amazing. read more

About 20 years ago we had dinner at Alfreds. I'm not sure why we hadn't been back, but we weren't. When we entered it was being in a Victorian home furnishings and all. Our waiter was the exact same person we had the last time and he was still giving more than excellent service. The seafood bisque was just absolutely excellent. For the entree I choose the Conch done in a Marsala Wine sauce. In my experience Alfreds has always done things extremely well and this was not an exception. I had been to Alfreds in the past and my last full dinner was over 20 years ago and had their Beef Wellington and it was unbelievably good then. I had been given a $100 gift certificate and wanted to use it so I invited to good friends to dine, one gentleman my age (70) and a young lady works for me. We ordered the Beef Wellington and arrived at 4:30pm for a fine night of dining. Here is what happened. We had to wait a bit for our meal even though i was told the Beef Wellington had been cooking for 24 hours. When dinner arrived, the Beef Wellington was warm not hot as we would expect and the cauliflower (which was our only choice) was cold. I dont mean room temp cold but right out of the refrigerator cold! The potatoes were ok. The Beef Wellington was OK but just OK, it lacked the wonderful flavor from the past. We then had desert and two of us two drinks. Our bill was $231. Way overpriced but here is what happened as we were leaving. My friend needed to use the bathroom and he is disabled and the ONLY bathroom was on the second floor up a winding staircase. He was offered help to make it up the stairs but even that would have been hard for him. He didn't want that so he was told by a lady there by the name of Robin that he could always just walk across the street to the 7 Eleven. Keep in mind, this was after a fine meal at a classy restaurant!! It gets worse, that night both my friend and our young lady were sick. She was sick for a few days and my friend for one day. I was fine... I wondered if I should call the Dept of Health as I felt it could be food poisoning. Out of fairness to Alfreds, I decided to call and spoke to Robin and explained all I have just mentioned. She offered my a "do over meal" or a refund. I told her I would check with the two others. Our young lady said there was no way she would ever go back as she was sick the for three days. I called Robin and mentioned that and she took down my mailing address to send a check (I thought) Nothing every came, I tried calling several times and left a message which was not returned. I had also told Robin that I would not go public on this IF she handled it fairly. She has not so hence this review. I am concerned with uncooked vegetables as a source of food poisoning. I am concerned the Beef Wellington was warm not hot as it should be. I would also NEVER take an elderly person to Alfreds if they have issues with steps. This establishment is not suited for the disabled in my opinion . I also am concerned that the ownership lied to me as to a remedy. If you go , you go at your own risk and you will pay top shelf prices for a mediocre meal at best. read more

When something is done so well - with excellence it becomes just about impossible to bring more to the description. Alfred's is such a place. Friends from California decided to surprise my wife and take her to dinner for her birthday. All four of us decided to choose differently from each other. Everything, from service to food preparation was Excellent. The decor was so so special, a step back in time to days long gone bye. The owner was wonderful to speak with, a warm and very interesting person. We will be returning as a special treat once more. This restaurant is a "10" in our book. read more

After dining at Alfred's for 35+ years, our recent trip there was the last. Apparently we are not the only people who feel this way, as during prime time on Saturday night there were 3 tables filled in the entire restaurant. Service has always been sub-par relative to expectations for a fine dining restaurant. The location is out of the way and parking has always been a challenge. The décor, which was once unique and charming, is now tired and outdated. Over the years, the niceties that distinguished Alfred's, e.g., provolone cheese, breadsticks, occasional comps for regulars, have been eliminated. Despite the gradual deterioration, we continued to dine there because of the food. On our recent and last visit, the food was disappointing. The "hot bacon dressing" on the spinach salad was a dollop of congealed substance on the corner of the plate and the toppings were meager. While I have enjoyed the Cioppino for many years, on this occasion the seafood was dry and shrunken, like it had been frozen and nuked too long. The vegetable lasagna was a very small dry, tasteless portion. I am not sure how this place stays in business, particularly at the premium prices. Went here for my birthday with my husband. With two small babies we rarely go out so we're very excited. We opted to go here for the ambiance and fine dining experience. We were shocked that our waiter was so young because most of the waiters there have years and years of experience which we love (and pay for) but we all start somewhere! He however did not do the wine bottle presentation to fine dining standards (which again comes with the upcharge). Not really all that important to us, but what does is when we asked if the app special was any good, he said he didn't know and that it was new. (Don't they taste before?) My husband got the filleto. He did not specify a cook time nor was asked or educated on its preparation time. The fillet came out and was well done, completely brown through. We asked the waiter if this was normal (especially for fillet). Shortly after the manager came over. We were shocked at how defensive she got. I get defending your dishes but really? If you have someone who is unhappy with their dish, you can't fix it? She continued to say that is how it's prepared and there is no getting around it. She then offered the steak diane where my husband specified Med. Rare. She said so 'barely pink?' ...? We changed it to rare. The steak came out quick and was good. It was not what my husband initially wanted however and was more expensive. We were saddened that this experience was not what we remembered from years ago. We were sad our one night out was not what we hoped. I suppose it doesn't help that I have worked in the business and we would offer customers a free app or dessert for their troubles. In a service industry where customers are always right, try to educate them more on dishes so that we could have avoided ordering it, or try to cook it to the customers liking. Educate staff on specials instead of them saying "I don't know". It's nice to make sure your customers are happy before they leave so they come back. read more

Went for ValeNtines day. Made reservations for 4 plus a child. They didn't explain over the phone that Valentine's Day was prix fixe only at $65 pp.for a 4 course meal. First course was about a dozen Ritz crackers with a small block of cream cheese with pepper jelly - one plate for everyone - no joke! Second course was a crab bisque that was thin and had 3-4 small pieces of crab. Dinner was beef tenderloin with red potatoes and asparagus. There were 3 thin square slices of well done beef that had the consistency and flavor of a roast, rather than tenderloin. There was exactly 1 ice cream scoop of potatoes, no more, no less. The vegetable was good. The chocolate and peanut pie was a no bake variety with an Oreo crust and chilled peanut bUtter filling. Reminded me of a Betty Crocker no bake cheesecake from a box. I left most of it. The wines were good. The kitchen made some pasta for the kid and charged us 1/2 of the prix fixe price for it. Some of the clientele were very nice and entertaining, another couple were arguing (Happy V-day!). The upstairs room was drafty. Take away the booze and decor, a one star rating especially for $65 pp plus tax and mandatory 20% tip. read more

We came for our anniversary on a Tuesday evening. Every detail from the bread, wine, appetizers (portobello mushroom yum!) through the salads soups, cocktails, steaks, and bananas foster (table side) was perfect! Remember if you want bananas foster it is BYOB (bring your own banana) I forgot my so I walked two blocks to Karns and was back banana in hand in no time. Carlos the server was outstanding from the relaxed pace to making sure our drinks were always full, he was understanding when we sent one of the soups back (baked tomato soup) because it was different in texture than we imagined... what an amazing experience! It is a bit pricey, but the quality of the food is amazing and the atmosphere is eclectic (seems very old fashioned). If you are lucky enough to visit and dine during the blooming of the iconic magnolia tree be sure to book ahead one of the circular tables in the cupola. Enjoy! We will be back as soon as we find an excuse to celebrate! PS: if you want to try the beef Wellington you will need to order it 24 hours in advance. Everything is scratch and amazing. We had such a great experience at this restaurant! My brother and I treated our parents to a dinner in a restaurant they would not have otherwise chosen. This restaurant is beautiful. Old house that may or may not be haunted, original woodwork, 70's décor mixed with period stuff appropriate to the house. The menu is very old fashioned. Very "Mad Men" which makes the food SUPER COOL. It has items from the 60's and 70's ... dishes such as Steak Dianne, Beef Wellington and so forth that I have only heard of but never tasted. The restaurant makes you feel like you WANT to dress for dinner and make dining out an event even though you don't have to as there is no official dress code. The food was amazing. I asked for a specific temperature of beef that was wrapped in Phylo dough and got it exactly how I wanted it. Can you imagine trying to cook a slow cooking thick steak INSIDE a fast cooking Phylo and getting it right? FABULOUS chef ! Every single dish came out perfect. There is no child menu, but they do have "demi" sizes of a variety of pastas that were appropriately sized for an 8 and a 10 year old. The 8 year old claims it's the best food he has ever eaten (carbonnera). I also suspect the chef is flexible enough you can get almost any pasta customized for your child. While children are welcome, and we brought ours, for me the atmosphere screamed class and babysitter needed. :) The kids did truly love the food and the ghost stories and the adult ambiance. The waiter was attentive without being intrusive, obviously well trained and experienced. He told us the ghost stories when we asked, answered questions from the kids and took family pictures around the restaurant. Very nice and extremely competent man. Again, the food was amazing. The atmosphere was a lot of fun and we were allowed to tour the home. (ghost hunting is a hobby for my husband so between the great food and the ghosts, he has found his favorite of all time restaurant) The reservationist is responsive to your needs, placing you in desirable areas of the home. In other words, if you want something romantic and private you will be seated in a turret seat near a fireplace with a privacy screen. How cool is that? Our party of 9 got practically a converted bedroom to ourselves! The homemade Key Lime Pie is to die for. So is the steak with crab topping, the Steak Dianne and the Carbonnera. Surprisingly.. all this goodness is priced just a little bit more than Outback. The quality/value/price/atmosphere ratio of the restaurant amazed us. Anyplace other than Harrisburg our excellent experience would have been triple the cost. We were visiting in from Pittsburgh. What a gem! West Shore peeps actually have a nice restaurant! We lucked into the romantic corner seat and went with some of the suggested favorites: the flaming salad for two, steak Diane, and a fantastic lemon veal dish (the name escapes me at this moment)...perfection! If I was rating on food alone, I would give it 4+ stars. Unfortunately I'm one of those people who judge a place immediately based on ambiance, smells, music, etc., and that's where Alfred's Victorian needs to improve. Our alcove seating was nice in theory, but they had 1970's beads hanging from the ceiling (definitely doesn't fit the Victorian style), the tablecloths were falling apart, and there was dust and crumbs all over the seats and woodwork. Also, the entire restaurant was quite 'musty'; some deep cleaning and candles would help! Our food was quite tasty; we recommend the Spedino bread, the Nut-Encrusted Salmon, and the Steak Dianne. We didn't have room to try dessert! A little sprucing up of the place, perhaps some soft music, and we'd visit again. read more

Our first visit today. We arrived at 5pm and were seated promptly. There were not too many tables seated at that time and we were the second ones in our dining room. Drink orders arrived promptly as did salads and soup. Another couple was seated approximately 10 minutes after us and both their salad and entrée required table side preparations. Once we received our entrees, the restaurant was getting busier. Our server checked on us after a few minutes and no additional service was needed at that time. Unfortunately we did not know that we would not see him about for almost a full 1/2 hour. The hostess noticed that we were sitting there, finished with our meals and boxed up the leftovers. We also requested the dessert menu from her. At least 15 minutes then went by and no one came back to ask if we wanted additional beverages for dessert. Finally, we flagged down another waiter and asked if the could have our waiter bring our check. A few minutes later he returned saying that our waiter was making a Caesar salad and would then bring the check. A few minutes later our waiter brought the check, never asked about dessert/coffee or apologized for the lack of attentive service. Overall the food was very good and we will return but we will definitely ask not to have this waiter serve us. read more

What a beautiful setting to have supper at. It's a magnificent building, perfect date night. Very cozy. Food was good. I had the fresh pasta, I believe basil pesto sauce of some sort. With a skewer of grilled shrimp. The pasta was a little different than I'm used to but I can appreciate it bc it was made fresh. Served with broccoli that was a little skimpy on the serving size, if I'm being honest. The complimentary bread was delicious! They have a secluded table that you need reservations for. It looked cozy and romantic. Sadly, we didn't jump on it to reserve soon enough. Maybe another time before this vacation is over. They handed us a coupon on the at our; we'll try to make it again and maybe secure that table for 2 near the window. read more

The name of this restaurant is "Alfred's Victorian" and it is located in a beautiful historic mansion. Great Peanut Butter Pie and Salmon with a coating of nuts. Service rather slow so subtracted a star. Dined here for lunch. Great ambience! Nice secluded areas for intimate dining. read more

This is my most favorite restaurant. We have been 3 times, each for a special occasion, and each meal has been memorably delicious. I had Sophia pollo last night and I could have melted in my seat, it was so fantastic. My husband had the filet with crab meat and felt the same. We shared creme brûlée for dessert and I really did melt then. Our waiter told us he had worked there over 30 years and shared interesting information about this Victorian that is listed on the national register. You will not be disappointed. This is a beautiful old home redone as a restaurant. The service was the high point, wonderfully attentive.The food was good not stellar and they make their own pasta. A big precaution though is that the restaurant has limited handicapped accessibility with restrooms only upstairs! There are also steps into the restaurant and no visible wheelchair accessibility. Went there with my husband and father who both use canes and probably for safety reasons will not go back. read more

Me and my man went and got steak Diane which was flambéed table side. A real treat. Cooked to perfection. My man got a stuffed portobello as his main course. Delicious. The service was very knowledgable and courteous. Cherries jubilee prepared table side; phenomenal. We will be back. read more

A large group of us came here for lunch today. Happily, Alfred's Victorian is well-equipped to handle groups (there were 15+ of us); all our food came out at the same time, was good and hot, and the wait staff were unruffled by the size of our crowd. The table was set beautifully and, true to everything I've heard about this building, all the rooms are decorated and appointed gorgeously. We took time after ordering to go on a little tour of the other areas and they were all beautiful. So, you ask, if you are giving high marks to the staff and high marks for the ambiance, why only three stars? Well, the answer is I was less impressed with the meal. I ordered Pasta Alfredino - pasta in an Alfredo sauce with baby peas, prosciutto, and Parmesan cheese, accompanied by a side salad. The salad was very good: crisp, a nice mix of greens, grape tomatoes, red onion, and tasty croutons. I opted for oil and vinegar for the dressing and I was happy to be presented with a decent oil and balsamic vinegar (instead of the anemic-looking, acidic "wine" vinegar that's served in many places). We also were served warm rolls and butter, which I wish had been offered right after we ordered so we would have had something to nibble on while waiting for our meal. Anyway, the rolls were very good and I think the butter was herbed. After the salad course our entrees were served. I was taken aback to have a plate of very thin sauce placed before me. In my experience, Alfredo sauce is creamy with a thick consistency - not clotted, but with a nice body so that it adheres to the pasta. The flavor of the sauce was fine, but if I wanted a good mouthful of it I had to use my spoon. The prosciutto...aah, so disappointed. Teeny-tiny squares of ham that were so small I couldn't tell by sight or taste whether is was really Italian prosciutto or just regular old deli ham. If there were even an ounce of the meat on the platter I'd be surprised. The peas were a nice bright green and cooked OK. The pasta was the biggest disappointment. White and green linguini-style noodles that were more Pennsylvania Dutch style (thick and doughy) than Italian (silky). One of the things I enjoy about Italian food is that it is a fine cuisine, with flavors and textures that are more subtle than aggressive. There should be a true marriage of spices, sauce, pasta - a balanced and complementary relationship - rather than one item overpowering the others. In this case, the noodles were so thick theydidn't twirl easily on the fork and dominated the sauce, rather than allowing the sauce to harmonize with the pasta. We didn't order any desserts (sadly, we had to return to work!) but a table in the room behind us ordered cherries jubilee, and that looked pretty good. Anyway, although my overall experience was OK, I would not go out of my way to travel here for a meal. I feel bad saying this because I think the owner and employees work hard to make this a stellar dining experience, and I appreciate their efforts, but for my money I'll look elsewhere for an upscale meal. read more

You have to go just to see the inside of the place. If you like old/historical buildings, this one is very cool. Lots of architectural interest inside. There were two of us. I was not wowed by my conch entree and there are no sides to speak of besides a couple slices of potato & broccoli on the plate, a small bread offering. My companion had a pasta dish and she said it was very good. I was trying to select something that would not be made in my home but it did not look like a fresh fish dish, it seemed like a piece of frozen breaded fish with way too many sauteed mushies on top, not much flavor or appeal but I ate it. The peanut butter pie is to die for so that was a definite highlight for me. Went on a Sunday at 4pm which gave us and another table the whole place to ourselves. The service was great and the prices are what you would expect for a classier place such as this. I'll know to order something different next time. read more

I've been going to Alfred's Victorian since I was a little girl. It is the epitome of elegance and one of my very favorite restaurants. I've lived in NYC for two years now and consider myself quite the foodie, but I am yet to find a place that serves pumpkin soup or butternut-crusted chicken like Alfred's can. Their lunch prices are very affordable too! Definitely do yourself a favor and try Alfred's. You will not regret it! read more

We went to Alfred's for the first time recently to celebrate our 45th wedding anniversary. It has a very nice atmosphere and decor. But, I experienced a first in all the years of dining. I ordered the filet mignon. It had zero taste! I am not exaggerating - there wasn't any hint whatsoever of any seasoning, spices, butter, garlic - anything. What in the world did they cook this in? Totally flavorless necessitating asking for A1 steak sauce to have at least some flavor to a totally dry piece of meat. Accompanying the filet was 4 pieces of asparagus that were thinner than a #2 pencil in addition to 3 pieces of fried potatoes less than the size of a ping pong ball. To add insult to a ruined dinner, we waited for 20 minutes for our check. I finally flagged down a server and advised him that we had been waiting 20 minutes for the check and requested that he find our waiter. Just a bad dining experience that we won't be looking to repeat. read more
