We were staying in the apt above the restaurant and went one night for dinner take away. The wait staff made it work for us even though they were busy. We ate swordfish and sting ray. Both had nice flavor and the side vegetables were delicious. read more

The food was alright overall, certainly nothing special but not necessarily bad either. Service was fine however they gave us a bunch of food that was "complementary" as part of the cover only to find out later that they charged us for things such as "sardine paste" and "butter" that we used to put on the bread. A total scam that is looking to take advantage of tourists. If the food was really good I'd say it was worth it but it was mediocre at best. Have eaten much better in the Lisbon area. Would highly recommend avoiding this place, they were not upfront at all about what we were being charged for. read more

Super cute restaurant in the Bairro Alto neighborhood. The servers were very nice, spoke English, and there were menus in several different languages. The grilled octopus was seasoned very well. My friend ordered the swordfish. Star of the dinner was dessert. We wanted something local, so we ordered the Trouxas de Ovos, which is like an egg yam dessert. Best decision ever. read more

SCAM! We were excited that they were willing to serve us before most other restaurants were open. Big mistake! They charged us for 25 euros worth of food without telling us it was not complementary. My husband did not know the butter packets were not free, he ate 5. They moved us inside because it was raining. They did not bring us the same water cups, instead charging us for another bottle of water. After paying without realizing the charges, they replied that they told us they were "optional". But we honestly had no idea we were being charged for every single thing being brought to the table. This included 2 baskets of bread, a basket mixed with butter, cheese and sardines, a bowl of olives, a platter of meat and cheese, and 2 bottles of water. Those items added up to 25 euros. This is extremely unreasonable! read more

I don't understand how this place does not have 5 stars. I originally came here in 2012 and stumbled on this restaurant. It was so good and the service was so real. Great wine selection and fresh fish. Super reasonable prices. I've had a lot of different dishes. On my last visit with my brother two weeks ago. I had octopus to start and then sole for my entree. My bother had the fisherman's stew which was amazing Dessert and champagne. All around 100 euro! So good read more

This place was disappointing. We had high hopes. Very friendly welcome and the staff is super helpful. The garlic bread soup was pretty tasty but the cod dish was hard to finish. Maybe we just don't like cod but it was chewy and unappetizing. The veggies in the sauce around it, however, were very tasty. The size of the bottle of wine was also disappointing compared to the price and what we've gotten elsewhere in Lisbon. read more

Fed up eating at the usual touristy eateries in Lisbon - god knows there are loads of them. We got a recommendation to visit a small restaurant in a little backstreet. From the outside Alfaia is quite inauspicious - and does nothing to prepare you for the culinary delights within. We had no trouble finding a table - although we were eating a little earlier than the locals (around 8pm) so it might be worth booking if you like to eat at local times! The staff are extremely friendly and courteous (and best of all, they let you get on and enjoy your meal, while being on hand if you require anything). The food was simply excellent - the best we had during our stay in Portugal. So good, in fact, that during our 5-day stay we ate there twice. I was particularly taken with the mushrooms and bacon (cooked in garlic and cream) for starters. Their main courses are divine (I tend to go for meat dishes, while my wife prefers fish - both were fantastic) using many locally caught/sourced produce. They have a good wine list - I can recommend the red Syrah (Casa Santos Lima 2004) as a good full-bodied wine. Also don't miss the chocolate mousse made with belgian chocolate. The meal (appetisers, main course, desserts and wine) came to around EUR60 - pretty good value. (and we got to ride the elevator tram home!) read more

I tried this place on my 5th night in Lisbon at the recommendation of a native Lisboa friend. After dining at several establishments in Bairro Alto, I can say this one is worth going to. The menu is extensive! Though it sounds silly, there are pictures of most dishes, so you know what you're getting, and not surprised by something that was lost in translation. Don't get me wrong, as an adventurer, I wouldn't mind that. However, it helps hone in on selections since my wallet and belly don't support me trying everything in one sitting. (I would if I could!) It's unfortunate it was my last night, or I would have returned to try other items. I watched the food at all of the surrounding tables and I was impressed. (late August 2018) read more

Alfaia was a welcome rest stop after a full morning of walking. The service was especially attentive and we had at least four people working our table. We had the bread, cheese and olive dishes come out and, honestly, that was all I needed for my meal. A glass of the house red wine and my meal was complete. Great seafood in a busy area in Bario Alto. Service is good and the seafood is amazing. Must try the grilled sardines and the octopus. Lot of bones in the sardine but the taste is very good. Octopus was very tender and cooked perfectly. The wine selection is good and very reasonably priced. read more

We passed by this place on the way to drinks and it looked good so we made reservations. WE MADE RESERVATIONS! We came back for our slot and still waited 20 minutes. After sitting down they brought us bread, butter cheese and olives. These we read on the menu we had to pay for. We just ate the olives and some cheese. We waited another 37 minutes and water wasn't even served. We asked for help twice with nothing. Then when they finally came around we asked for the check for the olives because we were leaving after waiting so long. The waitress kept walking around and didn't bring us the check so we left 20 euros on the tables (6x more than the bill probably was). We showed the waitress this money when we placed it on the table. My parents walked out but my husband and I went back to the table to pick up our bag which we left. Two men came screaming at us and grabbed my husband's arm telling us we could not leave until we paid and that they were going to call the police. I walked back to the table grabbed the 20€ and handed it to the guy. Here he let my husband's arm go and we walked out. Still in shock. I should have read the other reviews before reserving. Some prices on the menu posted outside are lower than on the menu inside the restaurant. Waiters will try and trick you into buying expensive starters by putting a plate of cheese and bread in front of you. If you send it back, it will be given to the next customer. Very questionable hygene procedures there. The prices for drinks are extremely high (6 Euros for a large beer when it is just 2-3 Euros elsewhere) and these prices are not made transparent at all outside the restaurant. We stood up and left after 5 Minutes of being treated badly and feeling very uncomfortable. Tourist trap, avoid at all cost! read more

We paid and stayed to finish the wine and that is when the owner, a woman, began screaming at us to leave our wine and get out immediately. She even ordered a waiter to get physical with us.
