Very good, proper northshore beef. Beef was well cooked and delicious, with a good distribution of JR and mayonnaise. JR Sauce is put on cold, which is not necessarily a bad thing, but worth noting. Delicious and great service too! We stopped by a nearby park for a road trip break for our kids. Alex's looked like a good place for a quick bite and didn't disappoint. The service was really friendly and the food was prompt. We got the chicken parm calzones, that were phenomenal. Could've used an extra sauce (no sauce inside) but otherwise just incredible. Like a lot of people, I probably ended up at this place after hearing Dave Portnoy rave about their beef sandwich on YouTube. I like trying foods I've never had before so on a recent cross-country trip I stopped off in the tiny town of Topsfield to experience the "famous" North Shore Beef. Bottom line? It was OK. First off, I thought the sandwich could've been vastly improved by serving it hot. Mine came out lukewarm. Maybe I could have asked for it hot, I don't know, but this was my first time so I just got it the way they served it. Second, I didn't think the tangy tomatoey sauce that came on the sandwich worked all that well. It was slightly offputting and didn't complement the beef especially well. Lastly, although the beef was nice and tender and piled high on the sandwich, it had an almost fluorescent pinkish color to it I found slightly unnerving (you end up wondering what they have to do to beef to make it that color!) All in all, I felt like I was tasting potential, how with a few tweaks the North Shore Beef could really be a great sandwich. But, as served, it's pretty unremarkable and certainly nothing to feel like you're missing out on if you've never had one. read more

I was an out of town visitor looking for a high protein, low carb lunch. I found Alex's Roast Beef and ordered the Junior Rost Beef sandwich with lettuce, tomato and mayonnaise. The sandwich was on a large hamburger style bun and piled hight , about two inches of rare beef! It was delicious! Took a road trip through ME, MA, PA we needed to find something to eat for lunch pulled up restaurants near me and this one came up we were 3 miles away so we stopped. Boy were we glad we did. My friend just moved by here and tried it out after helping him move. Got cheese ravioli with meatballs, and a small chicken parm calzone. Everything was so good! I had a great Jr beef three way . And my kids chicken kabob was very good also.They were friendly inside ,we did pickup.

Over the past several years, my family has frequented this restaurant. We order take out probably 3x a month and my kids get lunch 1x a week with friends. Recently, we placed an order for delivery, which they quoted would take 30 minutes. An hour after not receiving our order, we called to check on it. The woman who answered said it was on the way and should arrive shortly. 20 minutes later, and still no food, we called to cancel the order. The woman who answered let us know that she originally made a mistake and put it down as a pick up order, which is why it was taking so long. She said the food was already out for delivery so when it arrived, we could keep it, and she would still refund us the money. The delivery man showed up agitated with our order 5 minutes after the phone call. We explained what the woman on the phone had said. He began arguing with us, accusing us of being in the wrong - that it was our fault bc it was supposed to be a pick up, not a delivery. This isn't the first time this particular delivery person has been rude (a few years ago he opened my door and let himself into my house because I didn't answer the door fast enough). We are all set with this place. The food isn't worth it. read more

I absolutely love Alex's and order from them numerous times per week. They are consistent and their food is fresh. I love their gyro salad with feta but most of all I love their pizza! It's soooo decadent; especially the cheese blend. This is not a typical "house of pizza," rather a step above. Everyone there is super polite and I'd assume it's a family business because they certainly treat their customers like family. I also like their online ordering system. I find it convenient to list my specifications and not have to bother someone in the restaurant when I can just enter it in myself. The online system also offers points so you can actually get coupons and whatnot! The only complaint I have is really a complaint I have about the whole North Shore which is the sub rolls are so spongy. I'm from Providence and the rolls are much denser and firm and they don't fall apart when you eat a juicy steak and cheese. I believe they use fantini because most do -not their fault if they have to work with what is available. Nonetheless, still 5 stars and highly recommended to all. read more

My husband and I loved this little place! We stopped in after visiting the Audobon Nature Preserve and enjoyed the delicious food and wonderful service here! hi everyone once more... today i tried a new grilled cheese from Alex's Roast Beef in Topsfield. You know how in my last review i stated that the grilled cheese needed a more homey vibe. Well this one is a little too homey, it's good yes... but the crust is a bit hard not crispy just hard. They probably could use some butter too. I used to skip straight past Topsfield Center, head up rt. 97 and eat in North Beverly, but the opening of Alex's has finally given me a reason to eat a bit closer to home. Speaking about only the Roast Beef here, as I haven't had much else on the menu yet --- Alex's is legit. The portions are huge, the sauce is good, and the roll, it ain't bad either. How my wife and I miss living in Topsfield. Chief amongst then is not being able to get our absolute favorite "Alex's Special Calzone!" The staff greeted us with a huge smile every time, even years after we were the first caretakers the Parson Capen House, and moved across the country. i want to like Alex's.....I really do. The place is clean, the staff is friendly and their menu selection is vast. However, my family always jokes about how they take every item and run it through a taste extractor before they serve you...put another way...the food can be pretty bland in taste...not bad mind you but not "tasty". My last trip to Alex's has to be my last....the woman in back doing the pizza's picked a piece of trash off the floor and put it in the trash bin....then pushed the trash down so she would have more room in the trash bin....then, sadly turned around and began to make someone's pizza without washing her hands.....check please.....sorry, I know no one would ever eat out if we knew everything that goes on in a commercial kitchen but once I've seen it I can't get past it. Darn good calzones and a good roast beef sandwich. I have yet to try their pizza, so I can only give it a 4 out of 5. I still enjoy good old Topsfield house of pizza...but it's nice to have competition that hopefully doesn't destroy the other. If you're in the area, this place is good. read more
