Just your average diner in a not so average looking restaurant. Food options are plenty and dishes were a lot cheaper than most diners. I was across the street at the hotel for a wedding and wanted to skip the cheap hotel breakfast. My boyfriend and I came in and it was so busy (on a Saturday during Columbus day weekend at 1130am). We walked in and stood for a bit as we noticed the employees were busy serving so we walked to the counter and grabbed seats there. The menu was extensive but we knew we just wanted a simple breakfast. My boyfriend got the western omelette and I got a bacon omelette and added mushrooms (which were fresh, yay!) and onions. The food wasn't very memorable but it came with good hash and we left really full. You get a huge omelette for the price you pay. How on earth could I forget to review Alex's!! I adore this little spot. We come here whenever we can come up with an excuse to eat out and know its open. The menu is just big enough that I don't become totally indecisive... But everything is so yummy I have all sorts of issues deciding anyways. The burger is always a solid option but first check their specials cause you may find a winner there. Lately I've defaulted to one of their many fresh salads. You can't go wrong here. Plus the service is always with a smile. Prices here are so reasonable. Much better than some other popular diners in the area. Since 1911, Alex's Restaurant has been centrally located in the heart of downtown Poughkeepsie. With a wide array of breakfast and lunch options, as well as offering daily specials, we were both excited to try give Alex a try. I really liked the atmosphere at this restaurant. The people that work there were very pleasant when we went in for brunch. Seated quickly, the bench-type seating is creative and interesting while the large windows brightened the interior. For a fairly small restaurant, the menu is pretty extensive. My veggie omelet was well made, and the extra crispy home fries I had requested were just right. My side of corned beef hash though tasty, was a small portion. She had loved her eggs benedict - not too much hollaindaise, and perfectly made eggs, she happily approved. Homefries and toast come with all breakfasts. Alex's Restaurant also includes a juice of your choice which I thought was a nice touch. The street parking is limited, but very reasonable pricing and good service would have me back again when I'm in the area. read more

Visiting a friend upstate, and I didn't have time to eat before I got on Metro North. Result: my friend picked up a very grumpy Hannah E. from the train station. We were scrolling through his GPS to find a diner, but nothing looked good. As he put in coordinates for a Dunkin Donuts, I checked my beloved Yelp and saw Alex's Restaurant (anyone else get Arlo Guthrie in their head?) It got good reviews, so I snatched the GPS and put in the address. This place is super cute. Big windows, wooden tables... it is classic small-town diner. We were sat quickly, and our waitress was friendly and efficient. The menu had lots of great options. So many, in fact, that I had did my shameful "ordering multiple meals bcs I couldn't decide" schtick (luckily, I only do this with breakfast). First, I had to get eggs florentine. Because, when it's offered, I always order eggs florentine. But, they had a breakfast wrap with poached eggs and goat cheese that sounded good. So I ordered that too. Don't worry, I split it with my friend. Both dishes were delicious. The free coffee refills kept coming. We had a great time. I just wish we had gone with more people so I could have tried more things. There were lots of awesome sounding items on the menu! Plus, they have soda fountain sodas (as in, they do a pump of syrup into seltzer), smoothies, etc. I don't know Poughkeepsie that well, but it seemed like food options might be limited. The food here has always been solid. Diner food but done fancy and fresh and right! I'm a big fan of their breakfast menu, and my brother loves their burgers. I definitely recommend it to all y'all, with one exception... Don't go here if you have anywhere to be anytime soon. I've been here during the lunch rush. I've been here when it's dead. I've been here during the week. On the weekend. And the service is always soooooo daaaaaaamn slooooooow. To the point that it's kinda ridiculous. Very friendly staff but you'll wait forever to get your order taken, forever for the food, and forever to get your check. Last time I was there I considered just walking out and standing next to the window with my bill and my money in my hand ready to pay if/when they even noticed I'd left. Boy oh boy, I love this little place! The dining area has a welcoming, rustic feel to it without being gaudy and overwhelming like most Greek diner decor in the area. The menu is classic but innovative at the same time. The seating is very comfortable - we loved the booth seating with our 2 yr old daughter. Having moved to the area I had driven past on several occasions but due to my work schedule never had the opportunity to experience this Gem as everyone coined it. It wasn't until I recently got selected for Jury Duty that I was afforded the absolute pleasure of Alex's. The people are great and the service & food are part of a local feel that is welcoming. While walking back to my car I peeked in to ask about hours etc and was given a sample of warm freshly prepared rice pudding. Let me tell you it reminded me of my Nana's & I'm hooked. Established in 1911 and it shows. This place has their ish together and is delicious. Classic small diner feel and Great service. I got the Challah stuffed French toast, stuffed with cream cheese and blueberries. It was on point. Around the table report: corn beef hash was phenomenal, bacon was pretty good (a lil too salty), eggs were cooked perfectly and all the milkshakes were great. After reading all of the amazing reviews, my boyfriend and I decided to have Sunday brunch at Alex's, and we were not disappointed! The service was friendly, the food came out quickly, and most importantly, everything was delicious! He had the eggs benedict and commented that it was perfectly cooked and seasoned, no additional salt or pepper needed. We split a blueberry pancake which was the perfect amount of sweet with just enough blueberries, and I was pleased with my eggs and delicious home fries. We pass on the recommendation! Place is great & when you come in they got class & in a bit the waitress seems to call all the guys "young man" & look I appreciate the respect but after two I gave her my name so it'd be easy for all instead of being a bit overformal. I am writing this review not with the intention of bashing anyone or being overly dramatic about my experience. It is more for purposes of helping this establishment be better because it is doing some things right. My husband and I chose this location for a nice rainy day brunch this morning because it had 4.7 Stars on yelp and we also wanted to try somewhere new. Our first impression as we approached the restaurant was positive as we both commented that it was attractive and quaint. Upon entering, one of the waitresses greeted us and said "we'll be right with you!" The restaurant was half full at the time. Many of the tables were open and had dirty dishes on them and remained that way for the 5 minutes it took to finally seat us. When the wait became uncomfortably long, my husband inquired whether we should seat ourselves to which a gentleman responded "oh no, I thought she told you that we had to set a table for you?" No one had actually told us that. But anyway, we were finally seated. Our waitress promptly came to our table which was appreciated and again addressed that she thought someone had told us that they were setting the table and we said no one had said that to us so she apologized and that was also appreciated. The waitress proceeds to take our order(mind you, I realized later that she never introduced herself which is a little odd because I figured that is typical etiquette of the serving industry) My husband ordered water with lemon- water arrives with no lemon. He then orders Eggs Copenhagen with a side of bacon- order comes back with no bacon. Waitress has to be reminded of both. She does come back a couple of times to check on us which is again appreciated. Food was ok. We didn't feel that it was anything out of this world. I ordered the eggs Benedict. Taste was ok but I might have been better off picking up the whole thing and eating it by hand because it was too difficult to get my knife through it. We also couldn't help but notice that the pastries on the counter were uncovered which is honestly not sanitary or appetizing. Towards the end of our meal but before I had finished my ordinary pancake, the waitress puts the check on our table. We both felt it was a bit too soon. I think it's best to make sure the customers don't want anything else before assuming they are finished with their meal. Better yet, the customer should alert the waitress when they are ready for the check. So our overall opinion is that this place has the potential of being GREAT if the owner puts some time into making sure his employees are ALWAYS providing the best customer service. My husband and I both agree that we'd give this place another shot in the near future because we also understand that everyone has off days but if our next experience is not vastly different then we'll have to take it off our list of places for Sunday brunch. The location is prime- close to the Bardavon and the Civic Center- Strive to be better. You can do it. IN RESPONSE TO MIKE: Wow! Haha! That was a defensive response to my post! I guess you really didn't get anything out of that review besides the idea that the establishment has no room for growth, the customer is wrong and that the time spent responding to a customer who clearly stated that she'd go back and give the place another chance is a waste of time. It's all good, MIKE. The fact that you have to continuously defend yourselves says a lot about your attitudes towards the business. You are in the customer pleasing business aren't you? Or am I mistaken. Hmmmm. Striking your place off the list! LOL Boy, that was quick. I've been to this restaurant a couple times now and both experiences have been great. For those who are gluten free, there are plenty of options here. They offer gluten free bread and wraps for the numerous sandwiches they have on the menu. They also have several salads to offer and the food is great! They offer a pretty extensive menu for a smaller restaurant. Staff here is always very friendly and service is quick. The place doesn't look like much from the outside, but trust me...it is worth trying it out. They offer breakfast and lunch. Street parking but you shouldn't have a problem finding a spot. read more

Googled it as I and a business colleague where in town at a client location yesterday. From the outside it did not look like much! (in fact we were a touch apprehensive but then hot committed when we found parking right there). Inside the establishment is lovely. Simple wooden decor (works for me). Since it was a little after 2pm the place was quite empty and we were able to choose our seats... So why not sit right by the window and people watch on a lovely spring day ?! Nice comfortable interior with soft piano music lulling you into a happy state. Service was immediate as expected when a place is not totally jammed so kudos there. A nice menu with plenty of options and seemingly lots of combinations to customize to your particular palette on that day. I opted for the Cajun salad (chicken over romaine, olives, tomatoes, and other stuff - with a side of fresh honey mustard). I asked for extra spicy (as I am wont to do) although I usually meet disappointment as some people's definition of spicy sure is not mine (5 alarm fire hot). The salad was certainly a good (big) size so filling up was not a problem. No bad /brown lettuce to be had (thankfully). The chicken was the right amount and had a good amount of seasoning on it. Cajun? well... maybe we were too far north for real Cajun but it was tasty enough just the same. The spice did match nice with the honey mustard ... and the honey mustard itself was delish. You can grab pita on the side for an extra fee..which I thought about but I am glad I left it just to the salad for this late lunch. My biz partner in crime had the portabella mushroom/goat cheese/roasted pepper Pannini.. I'll admit I was slightly jealous as it looked awesome (and she concurred). Plus it came dressed with some really crunchy awesome fries. At $31 and change it certainly is not dirt cheap but definitely worth the dough. I would stop there again next time I am in the area and check out the myriad of other delectable that whet my appetite on the menu. First off its right across the street from the court house. So when my lawyer's "3 step collaborative process" started looking like she was colluding with opposing council I interviewed replacements here. It is crowded at rush hour but by scheduling my appointment / meals around 10 am after 2 pm we got good service and never felt rushed. The waitress also placed us most of the time in a quiet back corner. She was courteous and came by to offer coffee refills. I've had the western omelet, portion quite generous and the egg spinach wrap tasty, spinach was fresh and not soggy as has been my complaint in other establishments. The atmosphere reminds me of places I use hang out in 40 years in NYC, tin ceilings old style tile floors. Having loads of allergies and perhaps due to the vintage of the decor and absence of carpeting the indoor air quality is very good, powder room looks sanitary and well maintained. read more

If you wish to eat somewhere where you are not welcome, this is the place to eat. I recently ate here with a transgender friend. When ordering, the waitress asked "What can I get for the lady?" My friend corrected her and the waitress replied "Oh I get it, the guy wants to order first" and laughed. After this incident, I ordered a Swiss cheese and mushroom omelette. Not only was this a terrible experience, but this omelette was severely dry and zero seasoning. The potatoes were okay. This is a cute place but I will never eat somewhere where the waitress laughs at people for being different and I will tell everyone I know at The CIA not to eat here. Hire better people. read more

Everything that I have ever eaten here over the years has been delicious. I've been working in poughkeepsie for the past five years and can not remember a subpar meal here. Not too expensive, really clean and a nice place to sit inside or eat outside too. The chicken nachos are my favorite; loaded with fresh sliced grilled chicken, veggies, cheese and it's a huge portion. Big enough to take home or share. read more

Stopped in from the Christmas parade in Poughkeepsie NY. Enjoyed nice, thick hot chocolate! Waitress told me the rice pudding was hit & fresh from the kitchen. Tried a cup and it was absolutely delicious! Never had hot rice pudding before and this was a real treat. Alex's has wonderful meals cooked to perfection. Love this place's breakfast. Coworkers and I often order on weekends and they are always willing and able to deliver our food right to our office, and quickly at that! Their iced coffee is unbelievably good. No matter who I speak to when I call, they are always professional and thorough. The delivery guy is sweet and always has a smile on his face. This is your average diner with a variety of options, but nothing particularly memorable. The prices are reasonable as well. I'm sure there are moments where something warrants less than three stars and other times that make five a perfectly acceptable choice. It's just that in the two times I've visited this establishment, I've felt I could have ate the same meal but better elsewhere. That fact doesn't mean Alex's isn't worth your time; I wouldn't go out of my way for it though. Stop by if you're in the area or looking for a new place to try! You might be pleasantly surprised or at the very least you'll leave satisfied.
