Alex's Restaurant

Visiting from Hershey, PA.. we had a delicious spinach salad, topped with the tastiest baked salmon and delicious sweet apples and pears, feta cheese & walnuts & yummy dressing.. delicious double patty burger, tasty home fries.. and the rice pudding was a great dessert to top off a FINE dining experience. The owner and entire staff were so friendly and welcoming..our server Michelle was outstanding and so helpful in helping us order at a restaurant we had never been to before. We can't wait to come back!!!! Lots and lots of great menu choices !!!!! The seating was very comfy... my husband and I sat across from each other, each of us on a comfy love seat. Bonnie Mallit P.S. if visiting near Poughkeepsie don't miss this great restaurant

Seating

This place was clean and comfortable. Had breakfast there while my spouse was having a procedure at the hospital nearby. Food was good, prices reasonable, and the wait staff very friendly and on top of things. Has a diner menu, bit not a diner. Breakfast, brunch, lunch place. Plenty of seating, even booths/sofas.

They were HOPPING on a Saturday afternoon for brunch/ lunch. Got seated quickly at the counter and had excellent, friendly service. Absolutely fabulous gluten free options for both breakfast and lunch. Street parking was readily available.

Delightful little spot if you're looking for lunch. Good service and atmosphere and I would go again.

Matzo Ball Soup (1/2 container) & Chicken Soup - full of chicken!

I called for delivery (only $1 in City of Pok!) and it was fast and the delivery woman was well kept, nice, and polite. She seemed surprised and happy when I tipped her. I ordered the Chicken soup and the Matzo Ball soup. Both are excellent. Great flavor and not too salty. The price is reasonable as well. I will be going back to Alex's to try other things on the menu. 5

Such a cute resturaunt with an amazing vibe. Staff was super helpful and made sure we were well taken care of. Please visit if you are in the area you won't regret it.

Alex's is a Poughkeepsie staple and never disappoints. No matter how busy they are, the waitresses hustle and are always friendly. The Eastman (breaded chicken, cheese, lettuce, tomato, ranch) is my favorite and the french fries are top notch. The coffee is fresh and excellent and on a "splurge" day, the mimosa is event better. I overheard the mention of milkshakes. Saving that for my next visit ;)

Down the block from the Bardovon theater on the corner of Market and Main Street, in Poughkeepsie, sits Alex's restaurant. It's been there for over 110 years. But, it doesn't look it. When you walk in, you get this hygge vibe. Maybe, it's the greeting from behind the register, the way it's set up, or that there's a lot of regulars there. The menu isn't an encyclopedia. Which is nice, it's less confusing that way. The service is excellent and the food delicious and portions not over the top. Tried the corn beef on rye. What a pleasant surprise. Moist, well made corn beef on Jewish rye. Like the way you'd find it in a real deli downtown. My SO ordered a medium rare burger. It came just the way she liked it. We're not big French fry aficionados; but these were great even when they did get a little cold, still palatable. That's a change. If only it was open a later than 4 pm; it would be a great place to go before or after an evening at the Bardovon.

Recently, I took a trip to Walkway over Hudson with a couple of friends, checking out the town of Poughkeepsie where we decided to have lunch. This American restaurant is centrally located downtown, looked stately and had an extensive, varied menu. There was also a cozy, inviting ambiance to the place. We were seated indoors immediately, with social distancing being implemented. I decided to go with the Salmon panini, which was served with pesto, onion, spinach, and tomatoes on ciabatta bread. I also had Spinach Feta Fries on the side. This was a tasty sandwich, with the salmon being well seasoned and tender. I loved the taste of the pesto sauce, and the accompanying vegetables added a nice, fresh touch. The Spinach Feta Fries comes with plenty of feta cheese, and fried spinach. This was such a delicious combination, and the fries were delightfully crispy and very potato-y. The feta cheese was wonderfully creamy and potent, while the fried spinach added great flavor. The service was lovely throughout. The waitress and rest of the staff made us feel welcome by their friendliness. Also, the prices were very reasonable and portions were generous. Can't ask for much more than that.

So, a MexItalian restaurant, sure a little weird, but they do both really well! We arrived here by…read moreaccident when my dad saw a Spanish word on the sign and insisted I turn around so he could read it, finding it odd that there'd be a Mexican restaurant in Poughkeepsie, NY. I had a spicy pasta & chicken dish that was really good & a huge portion of food- I finished just over half, and I'm not one to leave food on the plate (as my ever expanding waistline can attest). The pasta wasn't overdone and the spicy cream sauce was awesome with plenty of chicken for all you "protein bro" bros. Dad got the enchiladas, but he refuses to eat chicken (it's a long story & you don't wanna hear it), so they accommodated him and filled them with cheese instead. Now I think the cheese would have worked better if it had been grated first (and they'd have saved $ too), but they used large slabs of cheese which didn't quite melt too well and were too much for him (yeah, he's difficult), so he pulled about 1/2 the cheese out & I ate it. The refried beans were damn good & the Mexican rice was solid too. I ordered the piña agua fresca & he drank about 1/3 of that, while his jamaica agua fresca was not nearly as good- but for jamaica it was better than I expected (in my opinion, jamaica starts off as bad and usually gets worse). Will I make the 2+ hour drive from my brother-in-law's place a regular thing when we visit Connecticut...? The Mid-Hudson River valley is beautiful and with the food here waiting, it's a solid probably, maybe.

I visited for the first time with my son. While the staff was very friendly, the experience was…read moredisappointing given the $80.00 total. I understand food prices are up, but for a deli meal, the quality simply did not justify the cost. The Issues: * Overpriced: The steak sopes were delicious, but $19.00 for three is way too expensive for a deli. The spinach and egg drop soup ($8.50) was also overpriced and extremely salty. * Incorrect Prep: I ordered a "grilled" veggie sub ($12.50), but the vegetables weren't even grilled. I also asked for mozzarella, but they used Oaxaca cheese without telling me. * Hidden Fees: We were charged a $5 "suprema" fee for nachos without any warning. I also wasn't asked if I wanted to add fries ($3.25), so they were left off. * Health Concerns: I have diabetes, so the lack of calorie/nutritional info made it very frustrating to order safely. * Wait Time: The wait was ridiculously long for this type of establishment. The Highlights: The Aguas Frescas ($6.50) were excellent and highly recommended, and the girl behind the counter was very sweet. Overall: 5/10. The flavors are okay, but for these prices, I expected much better communication and execution. Why this works: * It highlights that you are a reasonable customer (you liked the staff and the drinks). * It makes it clear that the "Deli" setting doesn't match the high-end prices they are charging. * It warns other customers about the hidden $5 fee, which is usually what people appreciate most in a review
