My sister and I took our mom out to dinner and picked this spot since it's closer to her than us. None of us had been before, so we were going in blind. When we walked in, another customer was raving about the food and telling us how much we'd enjoy it, which honestly made me feel a lot better about trying somewhere new in an unfamiliar area. The vibe is like a bar turned restaurant, dark and a little moody but not off-putting. My mom even got a cutesy leprechaun margarita, which made her smile. We started with 10 mild wings for the table, my sister got a Caesar salad and said the dressing tasted homemade, and this is where I tried French onion soup for the first time. It was okay, just really salty. My mom ended up finishing it, but I did like that the cheese layer wasn't too heavy. I'm still on the hunt for a French onion that really does it for me. I didn't get pictures of the mains, but my mom and I both got steak, I had mashed potatoes and she got a baked potato. My sister got the fettuccine alfredo and marveled at the flavor. She kept saying you can tell it's a local spot and not a chain just by the care put into it. My steak was good, nothing crazy but you really can't go wrong. The mashed potatoes were a little bland but still edible. My mom loved her meal and finished everything, while my sister and I both had leftovers. The only downside was the service. Our waitress wasn't very friendly, kind of impatient and a little passive aggressive, like we were bothering her just by being there. Given the lack of diversity in the area, it didn't completely surprise me, but it was still noticeable. We didn't let it ruin the night though. Oh how the mighty have fallen! I remember when this restaurant was opened by "Alex" and it was fantastic. I knew Alex by mutual acquaintance and growing up in the same small town. He was a professional restaurateur who was paid to sit with celebrities at the posh places he worked in South Florida in the 70s. Whatever else is said, the man had high standards in food and dining experience. When he opened, and for years after the place was always packed and very popular. The food was high quality and your meal came with 2 sides, salad, hot bread and nice presentation at a reasonable price. Alex left the business several years ago and the current owner has run it for some time. Today was my first time back in several years. The outside looks dated and needs a refresh. I almost thought it was closed. It was 2:30pm on Saturday before Mother's Day and almost empty. I don't recall it ever not being full of people waiting at the bar for a table. Until today. The decor is ok although I don't care for the fringe lamps directly over your head. I was going to get ribs but decided on 10 oz prime rib ($32.00) comes with 1 side (I chose baked potato - only sour cream and butter is offered). No salad unless you pay extra! The warm bread was fine with two kinds of butter. My companion had the Kids spaghetti $(8.99). My prime rib came out and it looked about half the normal thickness it should be and in a puddle of juice. Even the server commented about why the kitchen did that. And it was warm, at best. No horseradish or other condiments were offered. No garnish on the plate. Just a thin slab of meat. The juice should have been in a separate cup. But the small baked potato was steaming hot! My companion had a giant pile of spaghetti with about a 1/4 cup of sauce on top! Too little for the mound of spaghetti. And it looked like cheap jar sauce and no meatballs. She didn't mind but I wasn't thrilled. And her fountain drink did not come with the meal ($3.99)! I had a lavender lemon drop martini that was ok. ($10). Ultimately the food is mediocre and it feels like they are cutting corners to keep prices down. But that means it's no longer the special place it used to be. Sad. read more

We decided to go here last night. It was a Friday night. It takes us about 40 minutes to get here. We called ahead and got added to the list. When we arrived we were greeted in a very friendly way and immediately taken to our table. The waiter arrived in moments to take our order. He was also extremely friendly. He brought our drinks and bread almost immediately after ordering. My wife got the ribs which were amazing, and I got the fish fry which was outstanding, also arriving within just a few minutes. One of my favorite place I've tried in Batavia. Got a full rack of ribs which was seasoned well and not too dry and pretty tender. Once you drown it in bbq sauce, you can not go back so def recommend splitting in half to get the full experience. Their bbq sauce is also not too strong which is something I like. We got the loaded potato on the side which wasn't amazing but just a potato. The clams we got as starters were great though and really enjoyed the bread with their cinnamon honey butter. In prior reviews, Alex's place earned five stars. If it wasn't for the extraordinary service, I would have awarded 1 or 2 stars today. Usually, the meat falls off the bone for their ordinarily perfect baby back ribs. Not today. The ribs were tough, required a sharp knife to cut and were severely undercooked. The portion size was nice, the seasoning was excellent as always, but these needed more time on the slow cooker. I brought them home and will have to finish cooking them in my own kitchen. Very disappointing. The coleslaw is excellent as usual. The broccoli came out at room temperature so that the butter I put on them didn't melt. The fresh bread with a choice of regular whipped butter or cinnamon butter was delicious. What bumped this up a full two stars was Carly the waitress. She knew the menu, brought my order quickly and accurately, managed the table and item placement efficiently, brought take-home boxes, was polite and professional, and exemplified what a true professional server should be. The menu has many and varied options. The ambience is both casual and classy. I've been coming to Alex's for many years and this was the first time the ribs ever came out so undercooked. I am so glad I did! The prime rib was cooked to absolute perfection--tender, juicy, and packed with flavor. Finally got to check this place out after several visits to the casino right down the street . I didn't have a reservation, but they said they would be able to accommodate us at a high top table if that was ok . We said sure , not knowing that the high top table was located within an intimate cubby - known as the Hollywood Hideaway . My friend and I laughed so hard , it was not the atmosphere we were looking for, as we just wanted a quick bite to eat before our ride home - but we had fun with it! As for the food - I got a special that evening - Crab stuffed Haddock with a lobster cream sauce . Decided on the mashed potatoes as my side . Also they had a 99 cent shrimp cocktail appetizer, which was more like a shrimp bite ! I really enjoyed my haddock , but what I enjoyed even more was the bite I had of my friend's ribs . They were the most tender yet flavorful ribs I have ever had - no lie ! I'd come back for just those ribs . Our server was a nice young man , who even though he forgot our bread basket , he was pleasant and helpful enough. I like Alex's Place. Anytime we've come here it's been to meet up with friends and it's always been a good time. Tonight we met up with 2 new couples and we weren't disappointed. We had a reservation for 6 and 4pm on a Sunday which we clearly didn't need lol. The parking lot was more empty than not not that was fine. We got a good spot and headed straight to the bar for a drink while we waited for our friends to arrive. The bartender was very nice. We had a few rounds as we waited for the rest of our party to arrive and the bartender even looked up how to make a Vodka Collins for me. She'd never heard of it which wasn't surprising since it's quite the "old lady cocktail" from back in the 1950's lol. But she did a great job. Food: We started with 2 orders of the Philly Cheese Steak Crunch Rolls. They were great and il definitely get them again on my next visit. Whatever the dipping sauce was was sour cream based. It was very good. We also got 2 orders of the friend mozzarella. That was great as well. I liked that it wasn't plain old mozzarella sticks like everywhere else, but instead they were triangle wedges. The breading was very crispy. Panko?? For the entrées I had the bacon cheddar burger with cheese fries on the side, my husband had the prime rib with mashed potatoes, and our friends had a French Dip, a half racks of ribs, and one couple shared the Chicken & Ribs. All were perfect. Service: Our server for table service was nice but we felt a little rushed by her. She didn't even ask if we wanted to start with appetizers. She jumped right to the entrées. But I interjected and ordered the Philly rolls. Then my friend Da ordered the mozzarella. We all had a little of everything g and it was really good. But again with the rushing us, before our appetizers had even come out she asked more than once if we were ready to order our entrées. I don't like to order the entrées too early because 9 times out of 10 they'll come out when you're still working on your apps. Sometimes they come out 5 minutes after your apps come. So I said we'd need a little more time. And I let her know we weren't in a rush. She got the hint and gave us more time. About 10 minutes after the apps came out we went ahead and ordered. And the timing was perfect. The food came out 20 minutes or so later which gave us ample time to visit amongst ourselves. Ambiance: Alex's place would make a great date spot. The interior isn't too bright and it's not too loud to talk. Seems like mostly locals but that's good because then you know it's good. I'd bring out of town friends or family here. We went to the restaurant for my daughter's birthday and our waiter Drew was spectacular. He was very busy as he had many tables to take care of but he was on top of everything we ordered. The food was delicious. I had prime rib, my husband chicken parm and my daughter had steak and everything was delicious. The fried pickle appetizer was amazing.also. We all left there stuffed. To be fair, the staff is consistently friendly and attentive, and the atmosphere has potential--though it feels dark and a bit dusty. Unfortunately, the food has been nothing short of disappointing. A steak salad should be simple, yet the steak was tasteless and chewy. During my most recent visit over the holidays, things went from bad to worse. The bacon-wrapped scallops were so overcooked they were inedible, and the shrimp skewers were no better--dry and rubbery. The pasta side tasted like it came straight from a can. The cocktails didn't redeem the night either. The first holiday drink had no noticeable alcohol, while the second was overwhelmingly strong. Despite the bartender's kindness, the drinks were unbalanced and unenjoyable. After repeatedly trying to give this place another chance, I was embarrassed to bring a friend here. I couldn't say enough great things about Alex's Place. One of the best steak, prime rib, and rib joints is hiding in a very approachable restaurant and bar. It feels like you are at home eating in someone's house which is a nice feel. It is a little dark inside, but they bring around table lamps if you need assistance seeing which was a nice touch I hadn't experienced before. We tried the French Onion Soup, Ribs, and Chicken Parm and none of it disappointed. The French Onion and Ribs in specific were the best of each that I have ever tasted. The Ribs had incredible flavor and fell off the bone completely with minimal effort. The flavor was a perfect combination of smoke, garlic, and barbecue. The Soup was perfectly cheesy, with plenty of onions and pieces of baguette. All the ingredients work together perfectly. The Chicken Parm was one of the largest orders I've ever seen. While the chicken was not as crispy as one may have liked, it still had incredible flavor and the portion was amazing. We had incredible service from the hostess to our server Danny who went out of their way to make sure we wanted for nothing during the whole dining experience. I think what impressed me the most was the speed of the experience for what we ordered. We got two large, well cooked meals and were in-and-out in less than an hour. Half hour from Buffalo, one of the best places for steaks and ribs. We haven't been here is a while and we should have come back sooner. It was a Friday and they have a specials board. They had 2 types of fish fries and a few other seafood choices. We chose to have ribs and steaks. I think every meal comes with coleslaw. It was pretty good! My husband had a 1/2 rack of ribs - double dipped. We thought they would be saucy, but they weren't. They were perfect. The taste was awesome and fall off bone. Just the way ribs are meant to be. He had the baked potato with butter and sour cream. I had the 2 4oz filets. They cooked them perfectly and I asked mushrooms on top, totally covered the filets. Had another family dinner there recently. Staff is very nice. Place is a little dark and dusty at celling, hard to read menus. Average menu pricing. As busy as they are, I didn't see anything extra special about the place. Several of us had the barbecue dinner plates. At first it was good, chicken ribs and shrimp. but after a few bites, the seasoning and sauce made everything taste the same. I wish it all had different sauce on each protein. After a flight experience at Genesee County Airport, my parents and I went to Alex's Place. There isn't much open on a Sunday in Batavia, so it was nice that Alex's was open. I haven't been in such a long time, ever since I was a little kid celebrating a grandparent's birthday many year's ago, so it was great to reminisce about those experiences when we stopped. Since this is basically the only restaurant to go to in Batavia on a Sunday, I recommend making reservations even if it is not a Sunday. We arrived at Alex's Place at around 4:30pm, and there wasn't an opening for a table until 6pm. That was ok though, because there were three seats at the bar. I like eating at the bar, so I didn't mind. I asked for an old fashioned and the bartender carded me, which when her back was turned I excitedly moved my arms in a yes fashion and other bar patrons were laughing at my excitement. I haven't been carded in years, so it was really nice to be. For dinner, I went with the BBQ combo. I chose 2 meats, which were BBQ shrimp skewers, grilled with pineapple, and I also chose normal BBQ sauce, and the chicken, which was dipped in both of their sauces. For my sides I chose a baked potato, and it came with coleslaw. All dinners are served with a warm roll as well. The coleslaw was very delicious. I liked everything in my meal, and will be back to try more items on the menu. read more

Went there last night for dinner. There were six of us! I was there 12 years ago. The food back then was good. Last night it was awful. I ordered the seafood pasta and it was runny and linguini was mushy. It was like eating milk with linguini. Hardly any shrimps ,etc.. My daugjter- in - law ordered a half of BBQ chicken. This plate came out uncooked and tasteless. My daughter-in-law law could not eat it. She had a stomach attack ( diarrhea) after eating few bites. The Mac ' n cheese with beef was nor too good either.
