We moved to California a few years ago, and finding someone you trust with your furry family member's health can feel daunting when there are so many options. We were initially drawn to Southpaw because of the countless wonderful reviews about Dr. Chiang, and after meeting her, we knew we had found the right place. But what I've come to appreciate most is that the care at Southpaw goes far beyond any one veterinarian. The front desk staff, technicians, Dr. Braham, and entire team are incredibly attentive, compassionate, and genuinely caring. You can tell that they don't simply see your pets as patients--they truly get to know and love them. We recently had to make the incredibly difficult decision to put Sugar to rest. It was my first time going through something like this, and I was terrified of the process. But the Southpaw team made an incredibly painful experience feel as gentle and comforting as it could possibly be. They never treated it like a transaction. They took their time, cared for Sugar with so much tenderness, and were incredibly compassionate toward me and my grief. Seeing how much they loved Sugar and how thoughtfully they cared for both of us meant more than I can put into words. I should have written this review much sooner, but after seeing how they supported us during one of the hardest moments of my life, I really felt compelled to share how exceptional they are. Thankfully, Sugar's younger sister is also part of the Southpaw family, so we know she is in the very best hands. My friend and her mom also bring their pets here, and I recommend Southpaw to everyone I know. Thank you, Southpaw, for taking such wonderful care of our family and, most importantly, for loving Sugar so well. We will always be grateful.

If you are a resident of Sherman Oaks and are a critical thinker, think twice about this local veterinarian. It came highly recommended by a neighbor. I had high hopes and wanted to support this female centric place, however, as a dog mom I would never recommend it due to poor communication, lack of accountability and customer service and a defensive/ hostile stance when questioned. I went back for a recheck of my dog's allergies and skin growths. Note that there are two problems I was seen for initially and the follow up was to include both. This was not the case. I had to remind Dr. Cortez to remeasure my dog's growths. Not all of the growths were measured and there were no recommendations communicated for care. She was focused on his allergies, which had not resolved. I received VERBAL directions for 4 DIFFERENT TASKS and was told she would email me. In the days that followed I called the office and asked for my summary and instructions. I' was told they would be emailed. This happened three times. Nothing was emailed. I was not informed that Dr. Cortez was sick until I was also being instructed not to come back in the email shown below. It's sad that Southpaw won't take any accountability for the excessive wait, poor communication and lacking customer service. I think customer service is a thing of the past, but it's a quality that's important to me. There was no apology or anything that even approached an apology. If you value the ability to ask questions and discuss issues about your fur baby as they arise then this is not your veterinarian either.

Well, we ended up staying with SOVG for another 5 years. Unfortunately, their Vetsulin price was a…read morelot cheaper than any other vet we called. But now, 5 years later, we have officially left SOVG. Our 9 year old dog, Lucy, was not eating. She was lethargic, vomiting, and not pooping. We figured she had an obstruction- that she had eaten something and it was blocking her intestine. (This happened to my first dog years ago, so I was familiar with the symptoms.) We took Lucy to SOVG on a Tuesday. I was at work, but my partner explained to Dr Dumas that we thought it was an obstruction. He wanted to give her an x-ray. They couldn't see anything on the x-ray for some reason, so my partner was given two options- take her home and monitor her, or leave her there all day so they could try to flush her out with fluids and get an accurate x-ray. We obviously didn't want to just take her home and heal her with positive thoughts, so my partner agreed to leave her there to get a diagnosis. Hours later, they called my partner and said that they still could not see anything on the x-ray, even after giving her fluids all day and giving her SIX x-rays. They had absolutely no idea what was wrong with her, and their only suggestion was to take her to their partner emergency vet in Pasadena to get an ultrasound. But because they had kept her at SOVG for so long, it would be considered "after hours," so would be significantly more expensive. Mind you, this is at 3:00 in the afternoon. Because we love our dog, my partner rushed her to Pasadena. He checked the bill SOVG handed him before he left and they had charged us $1500 to keep our dog all day, putting her through various torturous medical procedures with no sedation including shoving a tube down her nose to drain fluid from her abdomen and giving her those 6 x-rays. In Pasadena, the vet said that Lucy was severely dehydrated (after spending the entire day at SOVG "getting fluids") and they had to hydrate her. The gave her the after-hours ultrasound and lo and behold, she had an obstruction. She needed immediate surgery, which would be $10,000 because it was "after hours" at 3:30pm on a Tuesday. Again, because we love our dog, we immediately applied for a Care Credit card and approved the surgery. She ended up staying in the hospital for another day because her blood pressure was low after surgery (add another $1000). Once she was safely at home and my partner and I were able to relax and think about what had just happened, we were furious. SOVG held our dog for 6 hours, keeping her in a high anxiety situation with nothing to calm her, torturing her with tests and tubes and IVs, only to have absolutely no clue what could be wrong with her. Then, only when it was "after hours," they told us that basically if we wanted to help her, we had to go to their partner across the valley and spend $11,000. They took advantage of an extremely scary situation. They acted like they simply could not find out what was wrong with her, and waited so they could get the absolute maximum profit from us for themselves and their Pasadena partners. They put our dog through hell and charged us $1500. When we called to complain, we were told that the doctor "did everything right" and they would offer us no real apology, compensation, or refund. I have been going to SOVG for 15 years. 4 dogs, multiple surgeries, illnesses, and scary moments. Our beloved dog with diabetes passed away at their facility in February. We have been loyal to this organization because we wanted to believe that they cared. But after this horrible incident, we will never step foot in this facility again. Money, money, money. That's all they want, and they will try to get it by putting you and your beloved pet through hell until you're desperate enough to say yes to anything.

I've been bringing my 19-year-old pup here for the last 6 years, and I honestly can't imagine trusting anyone else. Having a senior dog comes with its fair share of challenges, but every time we walk through those doors, Dr. Oh gives me peace of mind. Somehow I always leave thinking, "Okay...my old man is going to be okay." My pup has struggled with seizures for the last three years, and instead of immediately pushing expensive treatments, Dr. Oh recommended natural supplements that have made a huge difference. We went from about two seizures a week to only every several months! Now that my sweet old guy is dealing with doggy dementia, Dr. Oh has continued to be amazing--recommending affordable supplements, giving practical tips to keep him safe at home, and helping me make the best decisions for his quality of life. One thing I appreciate the most? No nickel-and-diming. I never feel pressured into unnecessary tests or treatments. If something isn't needed, he'll tell you. That kind of honesty is hard to find these days, and it means everything when you're caring for a senior pet. The clinic is always clean, and the staff is kind, patient, and genuinely attentive. They make every visit as stress-free as possible. Located on Sherman Way & Van Nuys Blvd, inside the shopping center with Pablo's, Dunkin', and Otto Sushi, with a large parking lot so finding a space is easy. Thank you, Dr. Oh and the entire Van Nuys Pet Clinic team, for helping my old guy enjoy his golden years. You have cared for him like family, and I'll always be grateful.

The girls at the front desk went above and beyond by squeezing my little guy in at the very end of the day on one of their busiest days before the Fourth of July holiday. My little pup decided to do some "parkour" off the furniture after the midweek fireworks scared him, and he suddenly became completely non-weight-bearing on his back leg.Dr. Oh was absolutely amazing. He wasted no time getting X-rays, quickly diagnosed a hairline fracture, and thoroughly explained everything to me. Thankfully, surgery wasn't necessary, and we have a treatment plan to help him heal. Every single person we encountered showed genuine care, kindness, and compassion not just for my dog, but for me as a worried pet parent. The clinic itself is adorable too! I loved all the cute pet photos decorating the office and wish I had taken more pictures because it has such a welcoming atmosphere. Thank you, Dr. Oh and the entire Van Nuys Vet Clinic team, for taking such great care of my little guy. We truly appreciate everything you did and couldn't have asked for a better experience during such a stressful day.

I met with a male vet who was borderline condescending and explained how my dog needed 12(!) extractions when just a year before his teeth were perfect. I felt something was very off and replied that if his condition was that drastic, I would take my dog to his normal vet for the procedure. Then, oddly, the vet mentioned, almost in passing, how Green Dog makes their money off of tooth extractions. That's when all my alarms went off. After taking my dog to his normal vet for the dental under anesthesia, he ended up only needing ONE extraction!! Everything else was fine. I was so glad I went with my gut and got a second opinion. When I got there, vet techs were waiting for me. Some of them took her back, and one took my story on what happened, and her symptoms. I had to call Pet Poison Line so they could tell the vets how to treat her-that's fine-and they wanted to do a full workup on her since she is 12. I said that's fine, that's what insurance is for. It was about 11pm when I was sent home to rest while they took care of her. At about two, they called me to tell me that she survived the nightshade poisoning, but they had found a thicker spot in her intestines in the x-ray, and they wanted to do follow-up images in the morning, so I got another estimate for them to keep her til the next day and run another round of x-rays and do an ultrasound. She stayed and I went back to sleep. In the morning, a very kind vet whose name I don't remember called me and went over what is happening and why that spot could be there. She gave me advice on how to proceed after today. She asked what food my cat eats so they could give it to her there too. I was kept in the loop the whole time from when I got there to when I picked her up at 4:30pm. It set me back about $3500. Thank God for pet insurance. But considering all they did and the overnight stay, not terrible. My cat's idiocy may have saved her bacon if we caught something early, but so did True Care's thoroughness.

She came to my home first thing the next morning. I was worried about my younger Golden Retriever jumping on her or interfering with her care, but she was absolutely wonderful with both of my dogs. She encouraged him to stay in the room with us once he was comfortable with her, and I truly believe that helped him understand what was happening. She was incredibly professional, but I'll never forget one small moment. Out of the corner of my eye, while I was saying my final words and paying my last tributes to my girl, I saw her quietly wiping tears from her eyes. As a healthcare provider myself, I know how often we're expected to wear a mask and stay composed. Seeing that genuine emotion didn't make her seem less professional, it reassured me that she truly cared. In those final moments, your mind races. You question whether you're making the right decision. Seeing her emotion gave me peace because I knew she wasn't simply going through the motions. I knew that if she believed my girl wasn't ready, she would have told me. Most of us are fortunate enough to experience this kind of heartbreak only a few times in our lives. She carries families through it over and over again. That takes an incredible amount of compassion. I found there was an outdoor area & a lounge in the back which I could've utilized while waiting for my dogs to be ready to go home. Parking was a bit of a nightmare. I will definitely allot for more time to park at our next visit. All the vet staff seemed very knowledgeable & treated myself & my dogs great. I was given clear information & even checked in with today to see how my girls are doing. I felt very comfortable conversing with both of the vets (one dog was a non-anesthetic cleaning with Dr. Celestine Hoh & the other had an advanced dental procedure with Dr. Candice Habawel), as well as the technicians. My girls were both taken very good care of & are doing really well today. I've been an RVT for over 20 years & loved how organized & compassionate the care we received was, as well as how my dogs seemed & their teeth looked when I took them home. Sidenote, I realized that Dr. Candice Habawel was the first vet I met at your Venice location when Pickles had needed emergency ADP & that location fit me in the NEXT day!
