If you are a resident of Sherman Oaks and are a critical thinker, think twice about this local veterinarian. It came highly recommended by a neighbor. I had high hopes and wanted to support this female centric place, however, as a dog mom I would never recommend it due to poor communication, lack of accountability and customer service and a defensive/ hostile stance when questioned. I went back for a recheck of my dog's allergies and skin growths. Note that there are two problems I was seen for initially and the follow up was to include both. This was not the case. I had to remind Dr. Cortez to remeasure my dog's growths. Not all of the growths were measured and there were no recommendations communicated for care. She was focused on his allergies, which had not resolved. I received VERBAL directions for 4 DIFFERENT TASKS and was told she would email me. In the days that followed I called the office and asked for my summary and instructions. I' was told they would be emailed. This happened three times. Nothing was emailed. I was not informed that Dr. Cortez was sick until I was also being instructed not to come back in the email shown below. It's sad that Southpaw won't take any accountability for the excessive wait, poor communication and lacking customer service. I think customer service is a thing of the past, but it's a quality that's important to me. There was no apology or anything that even approached an apology. If you value the ability to ask questions and discuss issues about your fur baby as they arise then this is not your veterinarian either.

Another thing that bothered me was when I asked her to explain the medication instructions to me. Her first response was, "It's on the label," which I found very dismissive. I met with a male vet who was borderline condescending and explained how my dog needed 12(!) extractions when just a year before his teeth were perfect. I felt something was very off and replied that if his condition was that drastic, I would take my dog to his normal vet for the procedure. Then, oddly, the vet mentioned, almost in passing, how Green Dog makes their money off of tooth extractions. That's when all my alarms went off. After taking my dog to his normal vet for the dental under anesthesia, he ended up only needing ONE extraction!! Everything else was fine. I was so glad I went with my gut and got a second opinion. I hate to say I'll never be able to trust this location in the future.

When I got there, vet techs were waiting for me. Some of them took her back, and one took my story on what happened, and her symptoms. I had to call Pet Poison Line so they could tell the vets how to treat her-that's fine-and they wanted to do a full workup on her since she is 12. I said that's fine, that's what insurance is for. It was about 11pm when I was sent home to rest while they took care of her. At about two, they called me to tell me that she survived the nightshade poisoning, but they had found a thicker spot in her intestines in the x-ray, and they wanted to do follow-up images in the morning, so I got another estimate for them to keep her til the next day and run another round of x-rays and do an ultrasound. She stayed and I went back to sleep. In the morning, a very kind vet whose name I don't remember called me and went over what is happening and why that spot could be there. She gave me advice on how to proceed after today. She asked what food my cat eats so they could give it to her there too. I was kept in the loop the whole time from when I got there to when I picked her up at 4:30pm. It set me back about $3500. Thank God for pet insurance. But considering all they did and the overnight stay, not terrible. My cat's idiocy may have saved her bacon if we caught something early, but so did True Care's thoroughness.

Modern Animal feels like every employee goes through rigorous training in psychological tactics for dealing with people -- like a Tony Robbins bootcamp for civility and the subtlest form of upselling. It left me feeling like they had control over me for a half hour, and an hour later, I wasn't feeling a lot of love for Modern Animal... nor was my wallet. They've come up with a brilliant model of unlimited visits for $199 a year, which I hear can be discounted to as low as $129. In principle, it sounds great -- until the heart of their business kicks in. And boy, does it. The softest of soft upselling. I needed flea meds for my dog and spent over $300, brought down to $250 with a first‑time coupon. I am going to be very careful with my numbers, as this organization really scares me. If I took all the things they suggested, it would have been over $500 -- just to get three pills to kill some fleas. You may ask, "Why did you go there?" And I would tell you: my vet closed early that day. Oh, I miss him so much. This really would be a fine spot for Kim Kardashian; I'm sure she would love it. This place is actually interesting in that, in my entire life, I have never seen such a well‑oiled dream factory with such an amazingly smooth way of extracting money from its customers. Once I saw our senior 13-yr old pup was telling me it was okay, I called Dr. Gonzalez at 7pm. She was at our home by 10pm. Our pup had been sick for several years, and in that last week, our primary vet had already told us his health was declining, so we at least knew the end was near. And I had already mentally prepared to be strong and let him go when he needed to -- so I had Dr. Gonzalez's number on hand. We live in an apartment building, so we reserved a spot for her in our lot as close as possible to an exit. She came upstairs to our home, and she had brought all her equipment. I had already imagined how I wanted this experience to go for my once in a lifetime soul pup. I sat on his favorite place on the sofa, and I had him in my lap. Dr. Gonzalez gave me a pee pad to wrap around him within the blanket understanding there could be an accident in the process as his body released his spirit. I had a candle lit. I had soft music playing. We had low lighting on to honor what was about to happen. Dr. Gonzalez was also super accommodating to our 2nd puppy who was curious about her and wondering what was happening to his big brother. She didn't shoo him away -- she invited us to keep the puppy around so he can know his big brother was about to pass on. She gave us time to speak to Nuxx, love on him, and then let him go. Then, it finally happened. And Dr. Gonzalez stepped out of our apartment for awhile, giving our little family time to grieve, sob, and hold our baby close. Our puppy sniffed him too and said his goodbyes. Then she came back, and she asked us if we wanted to be the ones to carry him out or she was happy to do so. My husband carried him, myself and our puppy followed along -- felt like a procession down our apartment hallway. We got to Dr. Gonzalez's car, and we gently placed our baby's body in her car, and said our goodbyes again. Then...it was done. Throughout the experience, Dr. Gonzalez was so incredibly supportive, gentle, understanding, and patient. What else can you ask for when such a heartbreaking thing is occurring? When a spirit is literally fading in your arms? I am still not over losing him, but at least I know we gave him the most peaceful send-off we could: in his own home, in our arms, surrounded by so much love. If / when we need to go through again, I will continue to call on Dr. Gonzalez. RIP Nuxx.
