We have lived in San Francisco for 14 years and my 3 children have attended public school. MOST of the time they have enjoyed great or fine teachers. When my daughter got to high school, the math teacher she had for Algebra 1 was not good. My daughter is curious and works hard. Math is not her favorite subject but she worked hard and still could not understand & got low grades. As a parent, I'm not as concerned about grades. I want to know my children are making the effort they are capable of (most of the time) & showing up and trying. I also want them to learn and understand. Much of my high school math career was a total waste and I learned very little. If you don't learn Algebra 1, it's a hot mess as you don't have the necessary foundation and once in calculus, if you make it that far, most mistakes are algebraic according to a principal we had with a PHD in Math. My daughter got another terrible teacher for Geometry. Even the school counselors would speak openly about this teacher being one of the worst in the School's history. My daughter was trying hard and yet not understanding and getting terrible grades. After studying really hard for a test and feeling confident she understood, I remember watching her face fall one Saturday night as she checked her test grade and got a D. As a parent I didn't know what to do Because we were watching Khan Academy videos and she was studying and still not understanding. My friend Laura told me about Sean Alexander tutoring and my daughter started with Olivia a few years ago. Immediate improvement in understanding and therefore grades. We had such a good experience with Olivia and Sean that we signed both of our teens up for the math intensive program in the summer of 2018. My kids went once a week with a tutor named Charlie to learn about algebra one and really focus on algebra basics. My daughter ended up getting a 700 on the Math portion of the SAT. She did take practice test and she did the tutoring with Alexander tutoring. She did not do any other test prep. She couldn't believe she did better on the math portion than the language portion as she loves History and English. Our son was starting high school last fall and after his sisters experience with the math teachers, we wanted to get ahead of the issue and so he took the math intensive program just like his sister. Our son, like many do, struggles with focus and impulse control and I told this to Sean. Doing the summer intensive program relieved so much stress to the entire school year. We didn't even do the tutoring during the school year. We tried to save money by doing online tutoring from Growing Stars (I think that is the name) and my kids thought it was boring and dreaded it and told me they really didn't need the tutoring because what they had learned in the summer was caring them through in their classes. They both did fine all year. If you do you want to do the tutoring in the school year , I would sign up now and early because it does fill up. We took a risk and didn't sign up because my kids felt confident they were going to be OK and they were. This summer my son, who will be a sophomore fall 2019, is meeting twice weekly with Felix. On Tuesday they meet at the library for physics and Thursday at the library for Geometry. I have learned that engaging your kids in the summer a little bit pays off a huge amount during the school year. My children do really well with the one on one tutoring and we have found it is a great investment. It's not cheap because these are knowledgeable tutors and they have to pay SF rent too! We haven't done any other test prep (because the free one at the high school for a day) and my daughter is doing really well on her ACT and SAT math scores but more importantly to me, she understands math! She is willing to sit and do all the practice tests on her own because math doesn't intimidate her anymore. Like all of the tutors, Felix is exceptionally organized and communicates constantly. He is easy to reach, responsive and uses the books we provided him from the school as well as provides some homework each week. Sean asks the teenagers at the beginning of the summer how much homework they are willing to do realistically each week and makes them commit to that. This is very wise because he doesn't want the children to feel burned out or resentful but to have some control over this whole process. Honestly, my children have been very happy about being able to go to the tutoring because they realize how much they have benefited from it. Summer tutoring or school year tutoring reduces stress during the school year and has made all of the difference in my children actually UNDERSTANDING. Alexander tutoring has made all the difference for my children and their relationship with math. Look up YouCubed as well for extra Algebra support. Stanford professor Jo Boaler's site to try and help students have a better view of and relationship with Math. read more

my son's tutor, Caleb, has been absolutely amazing. We can't recommend him highly enough.

Caleb was very effective at helping with test prep. Setting things up was easy, thanks to effective and clear administration. Booking virtual session times was easy. There was advice, test information, and lots of practice working sample test problems. Highly recommend Alexander Tutoring! read more

We have had an exemplary experience with Alexander Tutoring. My son, Nate, has told me that Rebecca Malas (Chemistry) was able to connect to his visual way of learning. James Magnatta (Pre Calculus) was excellent at breaking down confusing concepts to make them comprehensible. Jill, the "Mission Control Specialist", is always warm, accessible, helpful and easy to work with. Call Alexander if your child needs help. You will not be disappointed. read more

My daughter's self-confidence was really at a low ebb in chemistry and math, and it showed in her grades and teacher comments. Rebecca was an amazing tutor and really got her focus and study skills sharpened in a very short period of time. I would say this tutoring service is on the pricey side, but absolutely worth it. read more

We've been with the math tutor on and off for 3 years (5th grade - 7th grade), The tutor is kind and engaging in their style, and the tutoring is high quality. My kiddo enjoys the lessons and it's been useful in building their confidence and helping them understand the material that they've been unsure of in class. Alexander tutoring is easy to deal with and flexible. They're pricier than other tutoring options but overall I feel it's been worth it for our family in terms of what our child has got out of it, so I'd recommend them :) read more

My son suffered concussion symptoms for half of his freshman year which put him behind in math. The first tutor we found wasn't able to help much, but then we found Alexander Tutoring and it has been a godsend. The first time Emily worked with him, a lightbulb went off and he said he finally understood polynomial long division. Not only did his grade went up by a full grade this past semester, but he understood the concepts and material in a way that he didn't before, and he has more confidence in his math skills. While I balked a little at first as the cost is higher than others, it was WELL worth the money spent. My son really enjoys working with Emily and learning from her. In addition, it is a very well-run organization - rescheduling is easy and Jill & Sean provide excellent customer service. We cannot recommend Alexander Tutoring highly enough! read more

Highly recommend this tutoring for your math and physics needs. We needed them for our son twice for his pre calculus in high school when he was struggling and now when in college he needed some help with Calculus III. Each time they found a way to help him improve his grade significantly. Prices are very reasonable, definitely ask them about paying for package, it's chipper that way. I will definitely use them again in the future for our daughter who is freshman in High School now. read more

After 2 years of home school during the pandemic, my child entered 6th grade struggling significantly in math, and it affected her self esteem as well as her engagement in school. After working with Angelique over the summer, she not only started 7th grade feeling confident, but has been excelling and advancing in math classes. Charley also made a strong connection with Angelique and is excited for their weekly sessions. Angelique has transformed Charley's attitude toward math and ignited a curiosity for more. All the staff at Alexander Tutoring is responsive, engaged, and committed to my child's experience. I HIGHLY recommend. read more

My daughters had Jonathan for Chem, Pre-Calc and Calc. He's fantastic! Can't recommend him enough. If your kids' teachers aren't as clear as you'd like them to be, ask Jonathan's help to steer your kids to a clearer understanding. You won't regret it. read more

Kid has never used a tutor before but asked for one to keep A in a honors math class ---- this business is GENIUS. Their tutor, Caleb, has been patient, professional, thorough and really helped the kid keep up with the math class. Also, the business is beautifully run and Sean keeps it all organized, seamless and everyone who works there seems to be infused with the joy and possibilities of learning math, science and the world! 5 stars in every possible way! read more

Alexander Tutoring (AT) has been a godsend for our son who's been struggling in pre-calculus since COVID-19 kicked in. Our son's grades were on steep decline since the start of the school year. AT came in and was able to get our son up a full letter grade in just four weeks. They've been terrific to deal with; are extremely flexible, and are driven to help spread the languages of math & physics to the world (math is the language of the universe!). AT has gone far above and beyond on working with us to get our dispirited teenager back on track during this challenging pandemic. Thank you to Sean Alexander and the staff at Alexander Tutoring! read more

Alexander Tutoring has been nothing short of great. We started using them after a semi-failed attempt with another tutoring company and have been so happy! We added our second child to their programs as well. For our son, Math become approachable and not scary! My two favorite things about Alexander Tutoring is the way the content is taught, my children are learning how to perform math as a skill and craft and not just to pass a test or class. The tutors are amazing, fun and relatable. Their personalities make learning and understanding math a wonderful process. The effect of tutoring w/Alexander has reflected in better grades and less frustration! read more

We are thrilled to have found a fantastic math tutor for our 10yo, who does not love math. Sam has a real gift with kids. Here was a recent report from our son: "Mom, I have three pieces of good news.  One, Sam is AMAZING!  He is KIND, and he understands kids!  Two, we finished my homework!  And three, Sam also helped me with my writing homework! He knows how to do that!" read more

I wish I had discovered them before my son's senior year of high school. They wanted to make sure my son had the right match and gave us two free lessons until we matched with a third tutor on the third try. The care so much about education and it shows in all the ways they handle themselves. Excellent customer service, showing kindness and thoughtfulness in all of our interactions. read more

This is our first time using a Math tutor in high school. My son felt a strong and immediate connection with Felix. Felix makes learning fun and explains complex concepts in such a way that helps my son understand. He recently got and 85% and 80% on his two math quizzes where prior to his tutoring, he was getting 50-60% on his quizzes. Felix also is helping Christopher with chemistry. We have also seen improvements in this arena as well. The sessions are pricy (took one star off for that) but worth it as nothing else has moved the needle for my son! read more

I am telling you: If *my* rising 8th grader can do well in math after working with an Alexander Math tutor, anyone will. She worked with Gerald all summer, which she was less than delighted to hear when we told her about it, but she quickly stopped complaining after they started their work together. Last night she told us that she'd like to KEEP working with him once school starts so she doesn't fall behind. What? Thank you Gerald and Sean for giving her the confidence to go back to school this week feeling confident. read more

Perfect! Sean at Alexander Mathematics has and continues to be 100% all in and helps me in times of total need!

I cannot recommend Alexander Tutoring enough. From so many angles can I affirm their reliability, spot-on help, expertise in this work, and in particular, expertise with teenagers. As a parent and educator, I am in awe of this team and how they deliver help as though it is on a cloud with a rainbow connected. For students at my school, the communication and feedback is excellent for parents. For me, having a child who doubled up on math and thought his head would officially explode at the pace, the help from Alexander Tutoring has transformed his experience and feelings about math as within his realm. He's talking about math next year as someone who now feels capable and game, all after wondering if he should even pursue higher math earlier this year. They make a difference in kids' and families' lives and believe wholeheartedly in what they do. So glad they exist and wish this for any child needing to believe in their inherent capabilities. read more

Fantastic program and wonderful tutors. Felix was instrumental in helping my son through all of his high school required math courses . We have been very happy with the tutoring our daughter has received from Felix who is one of their tutors. He is patient, smart and caring. Our daughter enjoys seeing him and always comes out of the sessions feeling upbeat. Felix takes the time to send us detailed emails about her progress and what they have been working on. Sean has been wonderful to work with, helpful with scheduling and increasing number of sessions when needed. Our daughter was struggling in Geometry and ended the semester with a B. read more

My child had a wonderful experience with SA tutoring this summer. Chase was reluctant and not at all enthusiastic about doing work over the summer. His tutor Olivia not only made it fun and interesting but also helped him with his summer homework. This has made Chase feel more comfortable about entering the 7th grade, feeling caught up on his work but also having a better grasp on what is to be expected in this next year. In addition I appreciated their willingness to work with our schedule, and their options on different meeting locations in the city. I highly recommend Sean Alexander to anyone looking for good, solid tutoring help. read more

My daughter was struggling with math classes during remote learning last year and we started with Alexander Tutoring. They were invested in finding a tutor she liked and we tried two (she said they both seemed good). Although my daughter is not enthusiastic about math yet she did improve her grade and received an A in Geometry for spring semester which was a happy surprise for her and helped build her confidence. read more

Set your kids up for success...the best advice one of my friends gave me was to start my son with Alexander Tutoring before he started his freshman year at an independent high school. My son was a progressive middle school and I was not really sure how he would fare with Physics and Algebra. Alexander tutoring was amazing in that Sean assured me that my timing was just right at the beginning of the school year and we engaged with Felix (my son's tutor) right away. My son and Felix meet on a weekly basis and even though..or more accurately because my son is getting As in both Physics and Math, we are keeping the tutoring going! read more

Sean is a wonderful math tutor! Sean tutored both of my boys, in grades 8 and 6. Very different situations, equally great results - I'm highly satisfied with Sean. Last year, my 8th grade son needed help with the math sections in the SSAT/ISEE exams -- the exams required of San Francisco's private and parochial high school applicants. My eldest son was stressed about the math sections, but Sean calmly and enthusiastically diagnosed which areas needed help, and tackled each area of need. Sean provided guidance and very practical tutoring, including drills and reinforcement. Sean was very patient throughout it all. My son made big gains, did great on the actual exams, and got into his top high schools. Thank you Sean! My 6th grader was in a completely different situation. This younger son absolutely loves math, was bored at school, and I approached Sean about providing summer math enrichment tutoring for him. I wasn't sure exactly what this entailed, but I trusted Sean would figure out it. Sean did -- with accolades. My math loving son was thrilled with finally being challenged and completely engaged. They explored all sorts of math concepts, advanced topics, and very practical techniques to reduce errors and develop good math habits. This son had a great summer of math and wants to continue lessons during the school year so he can continue his independent study and love for the subject. By the end of the summer, my 6th grader is doing 11th grade work. Bottom line, Sean is an effective teacher who understands kids, figures out how to help each one individually and engages them through the process. My husband and I highly recommend Sean! read more

I had a great experience as a tutored student these past few months. I worked with Tyler who was extremely effective, to-the-point, and knowledgeable. I was really having trouble understanding how to translate a problem into understandable calculus, and Tyler helped me break down problems step by step so that I could more easily understand. Our son took some very challenging math and physics classes, with a mixed bag of teacher quality and support at his public high school....some teachers, were beyond outstanding, and some not very good at all. Understanding how important a solid grasp in math and physics would be, given our son's interest in engineering at the time, we decided to find a tutor that could support him along the way. We wanted to ensure he wouldn't suddenly fall behind and unravel his strong efforts to learn the material at school. Luckily, we found Alexander Tutoring. Sean Alexander was compiling a stellar team of tutors, carefully vetting each one. As a freshman in high school, our son was tutored by Nikki, who did a fantastic job supporting him through Geometry. Due to a scheduling conflict after that, our son was paired with Wilder, who tutored him for the remaining 3 years of high school math and physics. Over that time he took all of the highest level AP calculus, AP statistics, and AP physics classes and met with Wilder once a week. I can't thank Sean and Wilder enough for the exceptional experience and support our son received those last few years. Week after week, he looked forward to his tutoring sessions with Wilder, delving into particularly vexing problems that he could not work out on his own. Wilder's expertise was truly impressive, and his teaching approach was fantastic, not only shedding light on those confounding problems but also inspiring our son to continually learn more. That inspiration to elevate his understanding further, ultimately lead our son to a free MIT online program (not for credit, just to learn). The MIT test he took, indicated that his knowledge of the material was exceptionally high. He also received 5s on every AP calculus, statistics, and physics exam he took and performed very well on his university math and physics entrance exams where he tested into honors physics and an equally high level of math. Although our son is no longer terribly interested in engineering, he is still passionately interested in math and physics and I feel pretty confident that those subjects will play an important role in his future career. I can definitely thank Wilder and Alexander Tutoring for helping to develop and nurture our son's interest in those subjects. Rather than having a stressful experience with math and physics in high school, he grew to love them and now studies them simply because they are intellectually stimulating and "fun". read more

Alexander Tutoring is really awesome! Our family and our student are really happy with the results from the summer tutoring program. Our tutor James was very pleasant. He explained each learning objective so it could easily be understood. He was also able to quickly identify target areas and offer educational tools and solutions. The program is very organized and hits the target - to increase interest, confidence, and ability in math. We have completed the summer program and periodically receive follow up lessons to keep our student's math skills on point. Our student is now a high school senior and feels confident in her ability to understand and do math. We definitely recommend Alexander Tutoring to other students who are challenged by math and/or are looking to advance in math. Thanks AT! read more

My son has had two excellent math tutors (6th grade math) from Alexander Tutoring. His favorite tutor by far is Wilder -- he has an approach that makes my son feel comfortable and makes the subject matter not intimidating and approachable. Many tutors from other agencies have been condescending or unable to connect with our son who struggles in math -- Sean hires tutors that are the exact opposite -- our son is more confident following his tutoring sessions because of that. In addition, Sean runs the company very well, the sessions are organized, calendared with no cancellations for us so far. Any potential changes are communicated way in advance. thank you Sean for running a great organization! well worth the investment! read more

We were looking for something to supplement our child's math over the summer, especially with school closing prematurely. Alexander Mathematics was recommended and when we reached out they called back promptly and helped us pick out a good option to help finish out the year. They quickly worked out that our child needed something more challenging and moved him to a more advanced course (pre-Calculus) that kept him busy. He felt the tutors did a great job explaining math and helping him work at his own pace. Overall it was a great experience and they were easy to work with. Would highly recommend and use them again. Everything was via zoom given the pandemic and it worked well. It prepared our child well for more summer math at an online college that will help him skip a class when school resumes. read more

Alexander Tutoring is a fantastic tutoring service! Sean is very professional, responsive and really aims to get the tutor that is the right fit for your child and their way of learning. I actually had a few conversation with Sean before I enrolled my son into their programs. Sean was very patient and understood my concern. He assigned my son with Jonathan to do a one on one Geometry session in summer. My son usually gets bored easily and it's hard to capture his full attention. Jonathan did a fantastic job to attract his attention and able to challenge him plus boosting his confidence. My son was very happy with Jonathan. Our goal is to help him to get a solid foundation in summer so that he can master his honor class in fall plus the upcoming pre-cal class. The amount of homework was just right so that he spends reasonable amount of time in playing and working in summer. I strongly recommend Sean and Jonathan for Maths advancement. read more

We took an opportunity last year to have our 8th grader participate in a tutoring program outside of school. This group of highly educated folks were a hit for my son and a success for his math grade. My son's grade did improve and I would recommend my children going back to them. read more

The solution to the problem with Physics is Alexander Tutoring. My son is a Junior at a rigorous private high school in San Francisco, his teachers are quite good, and my 16-year-old is studious. So, when he asked me to find him a tutor, and mind you this was the first time he ever asked me for a tutor, I knew it was the topic itself that was down right difficult and my son needed a skilled tutor who knew the method to the madness that is Physics. Alexander tutoring came highly recommended by the learning specialist at my son's high school, and after speaking with Sean Alexander it was clear to me why a learning specialist would recommend the tutors at Alexander tutoring. They are not just brainiacs with Science and Math degrees, they use a specific method to teach the students that is the key to opening up the mystery of solving a Physics problem. Equally important is that my son (the critical teenager) has found his tutor Wilder to be approachable, patient, and motivating. Wilder verified for my son that yes indeed these were tough Physics problems, but that he, Wilder, would teach him how to approach Physics problems using the Alexander method, and that my overwhelmed Junior could handle these problems--no problem:-) As a mother, it is so gratifying to see my son tackle this tough topic--the semester grades are not in yet, but so far my son is doing better and better with each test. More important, he no longer thinks that this kind of abstract scientific thought is beyond him. As an educator with a Ph.D. in Educational Psychology , when I work with a student who is overwhelmed, over anxious, and struggling to learn, I understand that what is needed is to target the learning problem and apply a specific learning intervention tailor made for the learning problem. Alexander tutors get that and make a difference. One last thing of no little import--Sean answers his phone! He is at the ready when I call with a question, comment, thought, or concern. He communicates effectively, he responds actively, and he always follows through. Yes, the price is high, but my son is improving and I reckon he won't need tutoring indefinitely, so for right now it is well worth it. read more
