The Learning Studios took the place of therapy for me as a parent of a college bound child. I didn't stress a bit during this time! My daughter just finished her Freshman year at American University and it has been an excellent fit for her. The only thing I did to help her with her college prep and research was sign her up at the Learning Studios. Christy and her team helped her explore what she wanted to study, what she wanted in a college, what colleges to consider, how to write her statement of purpose, etc., etc., They even helped with her applications for financial aid/scholarships. They held her accountable for all the steps along the way and she was pretty much done with the hard stuff by the start of her Senior year. Without the Learning Studios, I know this would have involved many stressful moments between her and me. It was worth every penny. We just dropped off our son off at Cal Poly SLO. Christy and the entire staff at the Learning Studio were invaluable contributors in getting him into an impacted computer science/engineering major there. Our son had a great experience the past 2 years at the Learning Studio. I met Christy Franz of the Learning Game when my sister gave my twin daughters a gift certificate to meet with her in their Junior year in High School. We were traveling to Northern CA for Thanksgiving with family and to look at a few colleges while there. I was so impressed with Christy's expertise and enthusiasm ended up hiring her to assist us with our college search, even though her office is in Northern California. Christy is in our part of the state often enough that we were able to get invaluable in-person assistace and advise in the most stressful part to the application process. She was a great combination of cheerleader and advisor, and was incredible in communicating with my two girls, getting them to get involved in their choices in ways a parent sometimes can't. Short review: We cannot say enough good things about Christy Frantz and The Learning Studios. Both of our children receive tutoring from various instructors, all of whom are very talented in what they do. Our children have different learning styles and move at different paces. We have been very impressed by how well they accommodate both levels. Our experience with tutoring includes assistance with AP Calculus, AP English, US History, Algebra 2 and ACT/SAT prep. In addition to tutoring, our older daughter also utilized The Learning Studio's college planning and support program. Now this program I cannot say enough good things about. For review of this program please see long review below. Long review: We had the good fortune of being referred to Christy Frantz by a friend of ours. We originally sought out AP Calculus tutoring and ACT/SAT prep for our older daughter during her junior year. While receiving help in these areas we learned about the college planning and support program also offered by The Learning Studios. We were so impressed by the level of tutoring our daughter was receiving we felt we should explore this area as well. If I am being honest I went into the initial meeting thinking we are intelligent people and perfectly capable of handling the college application process on our own. What I learned was that it was not about our ability to manage the details or navigate the process. Instead it was about clearly identifying what our child's goals were, what school would best align with her goals and what was needed on her part to put her on the path to achieving those goals. Giving our daughter access to The Learning Studio's college planning and support program was one of the best things we could have done for her. She may have managed just fine with the counseling provided through her school. However, she lacked the confidence to reach high in terms of where she applied. Christy helped her identify a healthy balance of reach and safety schools, all of which aligned with her goals. I also believe having access to the stellar English support for essay review was of great benefit. While it was our daughter's hard work that resulted in acceptance to one of her top/reach schools, I must also credit The Learning Studios for giving her the confidence and support to put forth the best possible application. The planning and support program also afforded us, as her parents the opportunity to merely support and encourage her, rather than constantly asking, "did you do this and when are going to do that". TLS, along with our daughter managed the entire process. Christy Frantz has been a great partner and I cannot imagine doing it without her. We are fortunate to find Christy Frantz at the Learning Studios to help our son with writing and test preparation. Alex had rough Freshmen year. He was struggling in English class inspite trying his best and spending long hours working on writing assignments. He would revise his work endlessly, worrying about not being able to satisfy school teacher's writing requirements or his own standards, and as a result missing deadlines and falling behind in class. High school advised to switch to lower level of English in second semester. My son's anxiety over English class effected other subjects and his spirits were low as the whole college future seemed impossible. Before meeting with Christy we tried two different English teachers. The first teacher refused to continue tutoring after few lessons saying that my son's standards are too high and that he is unflexible and wouldn't follow her advice. With second teacher it didn't work out either as there was not enough connection and Alex would always rewrite work produced during tutoring sessions. When our son started working with Christy we didn't know what to expect and doubted anyone could help him. However we saw him looking forward to meeting with Christy and coming home from her lessons in a better mood, and we decided to keep working with her. As Christy got to know Alex better her feedback was very encouraging and she was confident that he should be able to do well on college tests when time comes, which was hard to believe for us after disastrous freshmen year. Sophomore year Alex wasn't allowed to take Honor English class and was afraid that this demotion despite his strong reading and writing abilities would put him further behind his classmates in English. Christy encouraged Alex to take AP European history class instead as she saw his interest in social studies and suggested to prepare for AP English test at the end of 10th grade without taking actual class at school in 11th grade. We decided to give it a try. Throughout the year Alex was working with Christy on both subjects and preparing for SAT/ACT. Magically, I saw my son producing complex work for Euro class. He would never be able to pull it together without Christy's gentle and unique teaching style, her ability to work around his issues, mutual trust and inspiring him to believe in himself. Getting into habit to meet the deadlines was the hardest. First few months Christy would follow up with Alex on class progress during the week, giving him feedback when needed and prompting him to produce the work. My son succeeded in the class and did very well in all other subjects as he became more confident student by the end of 10th grade. Our biggest surprise was when Alex received the highest score of 5 in AP English Language test and was placed in 99% percentile ACT composite score after taking both tests at the end of 10th grade. Practicing writing individually with Christy outside the classroom setting did the trick of unleashing my son's anxieties and turning around downfall situation. We would never even imagined or tried it without Christy's encouragement. Her unique teaching style combined with ability to connect with students and her deep personal dedication to teaching are priceless. We are looking forward working with Christy's team for the rest of high school. I couldn't wish for a better teacher and mentor for my son and would highly recommend Christy for anyone looking for help with writing, history, test preparation and college planning. We came to The Learning Studios with a crisis, and Christy Frantz immediately grasped what we needed and which of her resources could best help us. Our (dyslexic) student had gotten way behind in AP Computer Science and was floundering on the individual project. Hossein, the tutor, analyzed what needed to be done and worked tirelessly both on his own and with our student to figure out a very complicated project, help our student write the necessary code and organize the work, encourage our student to check in with the High School Teacher about how to meet the criteria, and complete the project in a compressed time frame. I have two children that have been mentored and tutored by Christy. My oldest was a bright engaged student and worked with Christy with great success throughout high school. She mentored him through the college app process and he ended up with several UC choices. My other child encountered significant problems once she entered high school. She had always had processing issues, but once she entered high school the problems grew exponentially. We stepped up her tutoring, Christy even went to her high school during her free periods to tutor her so she would have some free time after school (do you know ANYONE else that does that?) Eventually school became too stressful for her and she started to give up on herself, her grades were bad so she could not participate in sports and her peer group shifted to a very fast crowd. She was heading for trouble. We hired an Educational Counseling firm in the city for $3000 who told us to ship her off to a therapeautic school (lock down). Christy begged us to consider other options, put us in touch with other parents who had similar situations, and gave us a list of private schools that could support us. We ended up finding a perfect school here in California. Christy was amazing throughout this whole ordeal. She was a critical component in helping us not only in the academic area, but she also had a keen understanding of what my daughter was going through emotionally. I feel so blessed to have had her friednship and objectivity during our year of crisis. I shudder to think where our daughter would be if it had not been for her advice and referrals. I regret ever going to the Educational Counselors-it was a huge rip-off- and they pointed us in the wrong direction. I am forever grateful to Christy, she is a wonderful, warm and loving person.
