My daughter took AJ Tutoring to prepare for the SSATs. As someone who had to take the PSATs, SSATs, SATs, and GMAT myself (for summer camp, boarding school, college, and business school), I'm very familiar with standardized testing and having to "learn" the test in order to get a high score. The Good - - Teaches the right strategies - I do think AJ Tutoring does a good job of teaching the strategies to taking the test - Nice Tutors - The tutors are genuinely knowledgeable and nice The Bad - - Not enough practice - Part of "learning" to take standardized tests effectively is having to apply the techniques through a high volume of practice. This is where AJ Tutoring falls extremely short. About 90% of the way through my daughter's tutoring, I finally decided to take a look at what they were teaching her. I was surprised by how thin her binder was and how little practice material there was. As result I immediately purchased a bunch of practice tests and worksheets to start working with my daughter. But, there just wasn't enough time. She ended up scoring 83rd percentile, which wasn't good enough for her to get into her target school. Fortunately, we had scheduled a retake for 2 months later and this time I personally spent an hour each day working with my daughter and she ended up scoring 93rd percentile. - Not sure the tutors really care - While the tutors are nice and knowledgable. I don't get the sense they are really invested in making sure your child performs to their highest potential, which maybe isn't surprising. But, for an expensive 1-1 tutoring program that cost $230/1 hour session, I expected more. The tutor did follow-up a lot to see how my daughter did with the follow-up test and school admissions. My daughter's own perspective was that she didn't want to respond and enable AJ Tutoring to take credit for her score and admission into a nationally top 10 ranked private school because she didn't think the tutoring sessions got her there. read more

Our 5th grade daughter has been working with her wonderful tutor, Ashley Del Carlo, for nearly 18 months. We initially sought out tutoring due to our concerns that our daughter may have developed weaknesses in her education due to Covid distance learning and to help her transition from 3rd to 4th grade. Our main goal was to make sure she had the skills and knowledge to navigate school comfortably and well. From their very first meeting our daughter clicked with Ashley. She's warm and friendly and very patient with our talkative daughter. She's great at keeping her focused on her tasks and has really gotten to know our daughter well and what motivates her. Before summer and the start of each school year, Ashley asks us what our goals are for our daughter and what we'd like her to work with her on. She always keeps us informed of her progress and lets us know if there is anything we can do to help. She's also good at identifying things that our daughter needs to work on. During the summer before 4th grade, Ashley tested our daughter on her 3rd grade skills to see what they should work on during the summer. Besides writing, ELA, and math, she also worked on our daughter's penmanship. I'm happy to report that her penmanship has greatly improved! For 5th grade, she's been mainly working on her writing skills, since she feels confident with math. Ashley taught and guided her through the writing process (researching, taking notes, organizing important information, and outlining her essay before writing) and we were able to read her excellent report on Helen Keller. Now they are working on narrative writing to help our daughter express her creative side. Our daughter loves storytelling and is super excited about this new project. We LOVE AJ tutoring! My son is 13 and works with Merylynn Valencia on getting ahead in math. Absolutely fantastic. Great at navigating you through standardized tests (like the ACT and SAT). Allowed me to best understand how to use my time during the tests as well as be knowledgeable of wrong answers on the given tests (which were critical to me getting the scores I did and were infinitely useful during answer elimination). The only reason this review isn't rated five stars is because one of the reading passages during the practice SAT sections I took with AJ Tutoring showed that people are more likely to take information from reviews deviating from the "norm" (in this case five stars, as deserved) and I wanted my piece to be as accurate and used by interested parties as possible. My experience with this company is absolutely awful given my son's plan. Let me give you all some advice. First, if you're getting tutoring from them make sure you get some sort of guarantee and make sure that you take an official test. They offer a 100-150 point increase on the SAT on average but it's an average and they don't necessarily guarantee your score will increase and will merely just blame the student "for not following the strategies" or as in my case just offer a couple of free lessons after getting almost $2500 of my money. Secondly, a large portion of the prep comes from real practice tests. The problem is that you can find the 8 practice tests online with answer explanations (eg SAT Test 2, SAT Test 2 answer explanations, etc). You don't need the tutor for that let alone pay 250 dollars for a lesson just to hear the answer explanations. If a tutor does a cancellation with less than 24 hour notice make sure to request a free lesson because if you end up cancelling less than 24 goes they will charge your account. We have had a great experience with AJ Tutoring. We initially sought help for our 5th grader in 2015 for ISEE writing and quantitative reasoning. He had great experiences with both Kwan Teoh (QR) and Keith Tippman (writing). He is now a 7th grader and is seeing Keith for some issues with pre-algebra.
