Good prices, but careless with your groceries. Threw my fresh pizza at the bottom of a full cart. Dropped a glass jar on the floor.

Brown's Orchard is a family business that opened in 1933 and grows dozens of apple varieties…read more They grow well-known varieties (e.g., Fuji, Gala, Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, McIntosh, and Red Delicious) as well as lesser-known varieties (e.g., Crispin/Mutsu, Grimes Golden, Ashmead's Kernel, Calville Blanc, Esopus Spitzenburg, Summer Rambo, and Geneva Crab). They also make applesauce, apple-cider juice, apple-cider vinegar, apple jam and jelly, apple butter, etcetera. Customers may purchase these products in person at the farm during their operating hours. Sometimes, they sell their products elsewhere such as Market Wagon. So far, I have bought one apple-cider juice and six bags of apples--Evercrisp, Fuji, Stayman, Golden Delicious, Crimson Crisp, and Snapdragon--and I thought that they tasted very good. I plan to try more of their apples and other products in the future.

I recently heard about Brown's Orchard and decided to go see it for myself. Brown's orchard…read morespecializes in all different types of apples and autumn is their peak business season. It is primarily a store in which you can select apples and apple products for sale. On two chalkboards you can see the different types of apples that they carry and whether they are in season or out of season. You can get 3 different sizes-5 lb,10lb or half bushel. Pricing is based on the type of apple you wish to purchase. Whether you are purchasing for baking, or simply eating Brown's orchard has a great variety of apples to try. Want something different than what you'd find in the grocery store? Try a Nittany which is State College's unique apple that is a cross between golden delicious and york imperial. Course the big seller is the honeycrisp which they store in the back. I arrived when almost no one was there and within minutes this place was packed. There is no numbering system as to when your turn is but people were pleasant enough to wait accordingly. When it was my turn the man helped find a good selection of 3-4 different apples to purchase for snacking. He will bag the quantity your desire of each particular apple. I saw that they had a sign indicating you can request a sample. That sample happens to be a whole apple of your choice. I chose a Jonagold and it was so good!! These apples are a good size and not the puny ones you'd see in the grocery stores. In addition to apples, the sell 3 different types of applesauce, apple cider vinegar, apple butter, and even apple pie. Don't forget to take home a half gallon of their cider as well. I already had a cup and must admit it was one of the best ciders I had in a while. They also sell honey here. The store is built inside a large garage-apple buckets are everywhere and you can see what is selling fast. Cash and cards are accepted here. Primarily open during the fall they have weekend winter hours. Free parking is available on the property. Located about 10 miles west of I 79 heading past Cecil, it is a pleasant drive.

we had such a great time at simmons farm! it's the perfect spot for a fall day with little ones,…read morethere's so much to do between the hayride, slides, flowe picking, apple picking, corn maze, pumpkin picking, and even the corn bus (my toddler's favorite!). the whole place feels warm and family-oriented, and the apple cider slushies + fried oreos were so good. lots of food vendors to choose from, we love the roaming bean! the only thing i'd note is that the prices felt a bit high, especially since the hayride ticket doesn't include a pumpkin, with a pumpkin is +5. just something to keep in mind if you're going with a group or family. still, totally worth the trip for the experience and the memories.

Of course, these foods vary based on the season of year. This store also sells some packaged foods such as desserts and honeys. I entered the store and walked around a little, but I did not buy anything, because I planned to visit their other store that is located a few miles away. The products, though, did look temptingly delicious. I greatly appreciated that an employee approached me and asked me if I needed assistance. I asked her where the petting zoo was located, and she kindly gave me clear directions.

This is a place where you need to be careful when you are buying produce. I was a bit disappointed…read morein the fact that they did not have a whole lot to choose from but they did have some unique melons which I had never heard of before. The current "in season" items right now are corn on the cob, tomatoes, peaches, and melons. There is a dairy case but nothing exciting about it along with a meat case. I wasn't impressed with the meats in it nor with the frozen cherries I saw. For the most part you can spend under $10.00 depending on what you get. I was blown away by the huge cantaloupes they had for sale. They were $4.50 each. Unfortunately when I got my selected melon home and began to cut it the juice ran all over the place and I could tell it was overripe. They do have items noted directly from farms. I ended up with a green pepper for $.25. Other peppers were a bit more. For corn on the cob you can get either white or yellow corn. I choose half a dozen white. They come prebagged and the one I selected had an extra ear of corn for free. I cooked one of those up when I got home and it was fresh and good. I was taken aback however when I saw they were selling overriped bananas that had started to turn brown. Normally I would find this type of thing in your regular supermarket but never in a place like this. They sell other things like popcorn and honey and jams to name a few. I was told that their greenhouse is currently undergoing transformation for fall so I really didn't get an opportunity to visit it. I asked about their other location in Cecil and learned that it was basically a nursery as opposed to a farmer's market. It is run by someone else in their family. The staff is friendly and helpful in explaining things to me. Credit cards are accepted on any order over $10.00. It is located on Bower Hill Road as you head towards Bridgeville.

I was blown away when I saw the peaches-so much better than store bought. This place gave me the opportunity to shop for items I missed on my grocery list. The lady who helped me was very friendly and showed me strawberries which were just freshly picked. Upon closer inspection I showed her a couple that were overripe. She was nice enough to give me a better container. Prices are very reasonable and much cheaper than Trax farms which is a bit further down the street. Corn is in season right now and they had a good selection. They also do canning. Some of the vegetables like broccoli are in the refrigerator on the premises. Again make sure to check when you are buying. I ended up buying my strawberries, peaches, red grapes, fresh from the farm green beans, a red pepper and cucumbers. I snacked on some of grapes and strawberries on my way out and believe me they were very good! When I got home I had some of the green beans-fresh and crisp! Herman farm market is located a short distance away after you pass Mineral beach swimming pool as you head towards Finleyville. Hopefully I can stop here again next time I'm in this area.
