breaking news: aldi now accepts credit cards! Amex too!

Breaking news: Aldi now accepts credit cards!!! Even AMEX! I've always been an Aldi fan for YEARS and now I love it even more. I understood that in order to save money, they only accepted debit cards or cash (to avoid 3-5% processing fee). But now they are expanding their business by going after the Whole Foods market. Aldi offers several "health food" items, flax seeds, chia seeds, coconut milk.. that sort of thing. All for a fraction of the cost! Even though Aldi is the same company as Trader Joes, I prefer Aldi 100%, prices are even lower than TJs. Ever since 2/20/16, they began accepting credit cards, which is AWESOME-sauce because I get points now on my favorite grocery store =)

My first visit to an Aldi and I really liked it. It's a no-frill supermarket, great for super cheap groceries. Shockingly inexpensive. When I say no frills, I mean that to borrow a shopping cart costs a quarter, which you get back when the cart is returned to its home. You must bring your own bags and bag your own groceries after you've been checked out. They accept debit cards, but not credit cards. I imagine it gets super hectic and unpleasant at peak times. Ninety percent of the products are off-brand, with names like "Baker's Corner" and "Reggano's" and "Corntown" (my favorite, for microwave popcorn). The prices were great: A gallon of milk was $1.00, a dozen eggs was 75¢ and a bag of mini marshmallows was 69¢ (on sale). There were also a bunch of other random deals, like a little guitar and a LCD TV/DVD combo. The produce was a little weird, some was shrink wrapped and there was a very limited selection. The frozen selection was pretty impressive though, and there was quite a bit of cheap wine, again off-brand. Overall, Aldi is an ideal place to stock up on basics if you're not too concerned with brand names and don't mind the bare bones service. It's around the corner from Plum Market, so maybe Aldi could be good option for supplementing the fancy specialty items and fresh produce that Plum does so well.

Outside the store. Even right before it closes, it's quite busy.

Not the broadest selection but extraordinary prices. Doesn't take credit cards but a great place to save on staples. Good quality produce.

Costco rotisserie chicken makes me very sick, but I can easily consume plum market, rotisserie chicken. We love their local and specialty items. My kids are obsessed with Tillamook cheese sticks. We've had really good service specifically in the produce and meat department with people helping us and going above and beyond. One time a produce worker offered to make a mirepoix (fresh cut vegetables for soup ) for us while we were shopping, and when I was introducing my baby to solid foods, I got a lot of great tips from the meat counter worker. I will say that the prices are exorbitant and some things. I wish I could shop here full-time but it is very expensive. But when you have allergies, they learn that some things are worth paying a little bit of a premium for. We will always come in for their produce and rotisserie chickens. The produce I buy here is always fresh and delicious and I've never had a problem with mold, bruises, or slimy vegetables. I can always trust the quality at Plum market. They have an app also which has some pretty great deals sometimes. Their hot case is delicious if you don't have a bunch of allergies. We used to enjoy that quite frequently. The fish and chips are really good. I love how the bathroom has a fresh bouquet of flowers. They are beautiful and such a nice touch. I can always trust that any allergen specific food I will find at plum. I'm so thankful to have this in the community!!

It's truly level above the competing Busch's and Holiday Market stores. If you're tired of everyday takeout options that you find at fast food restaurants, then you owe it to yourself to splurge once in a while and enjoy lunch or dinner from the Plum Market. The meat and seafood offerings are prepared to give you a fine dinning experience that you can serve at home or at the office. You can even enjoy their out of this world salad bar, which offers wide array of fruit and vegetables options. The service here is amazing, first-rate, and everyone is well educated and knows how to make some great recommendations. This is especially true of those who work in the wine section. For instance, if you want sake from Japan, they have an amazing selection of options to offer you that can be served cold or warm. Likewise, the staff even makes excellent food recommendations to enhance the sake experience. The atmosphere inside this market is truly amazing, and very clean. My only complaint is that they offer a very limited selection of soy sauce from Kikkoman's. Given the fact that it's Ann Arbor, I would have expected much more in the way of diversity when it comes to the variety of soy sauces from the Asia-Pacific Region. So if you want to impress your date, serve up a delicious meal at a business meeting, or have a special gathering with friends but don't have time to cook it yourself, then this is the place to buy it at. If you love shopping in the suburbs then you will enjoy the great offerings at this Plum Market.

He was able to ask an employee a clarifying question and give me history as to why that item was potentially discontinued and even gave me an estimated date for when it should be coming back. I was very impressed. I got the runaround at Whole Foods asking about this item and I didn't even try target. My kiddo has lots of significant anaphylactic allergies so we end up buying lots of expensive specialty items, and take the occasional trip to specialty grocery stores like Arbor Farms. I love the concept of shopping for Local Michigan items, but with a big family, this is not always in the budget. The food is bought during the harvest months and preserved and then you get it in the winter. I am far too lazy to actually do this myself, so this CSA is perfect for me! I've gotten corn, strawberries, blueberries, cranberries (awesome for Tgiving dinner), raspberries, pumpkin puree, tomatoes, squash, peaches...tons more that I can't think of off the top of my head. Yes, it is not cheap. I am about the cheapest person I know and even I will pay for this because the quality is that good. I also spent some time at the warehouse this summer and I saw first-hand the hard work that goes into the process of preserving this food. I will also say that I just paid $8 for a quart of blueberries. If the average price here is $7 per bag, I'm getting almost a full quart (I think it was 12 oz) of blueberries for that price. So I'm really only paying a little bit more and I don't have to actually freeze them. But Rena did a smart thing: She let people buy a sample package just before Thanksgiving without making a commitment for the whole season. Everything's relative, so unlike a previous reviewer who is always surprised at how little food she gets every month, I'm always surprised at how MUCH I get. Whatever freezing process they use, it works. Asparagus was nice and crisp, and the fruits retain so much more flavor than the frozen fruit you pick up in the grocery store. These foods are not fresh--they ARE frozen--so you can't expect them to be the same as fresh when they are thawed, but this produce comes as close as I think is possible. And it's so nice to be able to taste these delicious flavors in the dead of winter.
