For the last decade, Alaska Mill and Feed has been my first choice in all things pet treats and gardening gear. I am happy to say that no matter if I am raising farm animals, splurging on decadent treats for my dogs or adding new plants to my garden, Alaska Mill and Feed continues to be my go to place. The employees are very friendly and always gracious to answer questions and provide customer service whether it be in the green house or anywhere else. The offer a mixture of classes throughout the spring and into the fall that are very helpful for learning how to succeed in Alaska's challenging growing climate. I enjoy the mixture of perennials, annuals, herbs, shrubs, roses, etc that they offer in the late spring/early summer. It is really cool that they offer so many plants that will succeed here in Alaska. Truly a wonderful store to the pet owner. I do not have a dog but if I did this would be the top tier place in town to go for all things dog related. I stopped in after seeing their Facebook page advertising a photo op free with a non perishable food donation and it was great set up. Inside has a nice nostalgia and plenty of quirky, local and useful things to buy. I picked up a shaving set for my husband I hadn't yet seen anywhere else. Because of my side-hustle at Yelp, I have known about this place for at least 6 years. Why? It's a local business that's beloved by locals. If you're into idioms, you might say it's a "pillar of the community". I've just never had a personal reason to go here. I only mill malted barley for beer and I only feed myself, as I am petless. However, one of my best friends is visiting me from the south. She has a fun and feisty 6 month year old Parsons terrier, and she needed a nice winter piece! We got her a jacker here that fit her perfectly. She looks so damn dumb in it, that she looks even cuter. She's only 5lbs and it fits her like a glove! The store was well laid out and the staff were incredibly friendly. I love that you can bring your dog in. I'll be back...next time I have a dog visiting me from out-of-town! read more

We love Alaska Mill & Feed and with spring approaching, it aids us with our spring fever. Fantastic treats for the fur babies! They offer a catnip cigar that makes our boy go nuts! We always make sure there is one in his stocking for Christmas. Great supply of pig ears and other treats and foods to boot. Gardening, farming, canning, birds, fermenting, composting, kitchenware, this store is fantastic! Some say it's expensive but I don't really see it. They always make super cute displays for the fur babies, tea and kitchenware. Unique little items that make me smile. Walking in this most recent trip, the seed stands were proudly displayed and even though I already have all I need for the year and most are even started, I still perused, in case I needed to add to my stash. Beautiful sauerkraut crocks from 1 to 10 gallons for a great price. I recently laughed while in an antique store that wanted $140 for a crock that I know was only $40 at AM&F. I was going to purchase a 2 gallon, but they were out. Eh, it's okay, the cabbage won't be ready for months and it gives me a reason to go back again. We like to walk the whole shop, making sure we see everything and don't miss anything that has recently been added. I really, really wanted to like this place. I have been here four times. I had the same experience each time by four different cashiers: I was treated in a very unfriendly, condescending manner. Today, an unsmiling cashier greeted me with: "What's your phone number" (for their rewards club, I guess). I headed-out to my car where another employee was waiting to tell me I had parked too close to a "No Loading Zone", and said: "Next time, park somewhere else". I will. Alaska Mill & Feed, oh how do I love thee? I get wet just thinking about your plant selection. Organic fertilizers of every origin. They even have BAT GUANO fertilizer, people! Corn gluten weed supressent! Red worms for vermiculture. Lady bug kits. They even had varieties of mint I've never seen before, and that's saying something.... I've lived here for 3 years and was discouraged by people telling me how expensive it was. I finally decided to check it out for myself. Umm... people who think this place is pricey don't know what the hell they're talking about. A lot of what AM&F is selling are speciality items that I NEVER would have expected to find anywhere but a catalog, much less Alaska. I want to kiss the buyer for AM&F. Good job, whoever you are! Their plants are beautifully tended and bred for Alaskan gardens. I'm not originally from Alaska and I saw so many things that were new to me. I felt like a plant-virgin again. Great selection, super nice staff, socially conscious business. I bought all the supplies needed to make my own hanging baskets. While shopping for plants I saw they had big bags of Alaskan soil and couldn't stop thinking about it. Sounds way better than the bags of pre-fertilized stuff coming from out of state. In general, I aspire to be a "buy local" kind of gal, and with all my puppy needs, I exclusively shop Alaska mill and feed. There's a number of reasons I do this: 1) Excellent doggie food & snack options (especially grain-free) 1a) Great selection of toys, leashes, harnesses, shampoos, clippers, etc 2) You can bring your doggie into the store on a leash 3) The customer service is very helpful and nice 4) They have a bad-ass selection of Christmas trees, wreaths and centerpieces that are the most affordable in town. 5) AM&F is right down the road from my house (convenience is key) 6) you can browse other things besides pet stuff! We had a hard time getting waited on. We were there for boots, which are located right next to the cash registers. The woman actively ignored us for several minutes, even when she had no customers. Weird. She seemed put out when I asked if we could get some help. We had called ahead to see if they had ice bug boots in size 6. They listed a bunch. We showed up 15 minutes later. There was only one pair in the floor display and I mentioned that we called ahead. She seemed put out when I implied there may be more in stock area. Seemed put out when I told my daughter that the burgundy boots didnt match either of her winter coats and a no go. Turns out there were only 3 size 6es in the store. Practically yelled at me when I told her we were only interested in the ice bugs with spikes. "They're not spikes! And all ice bugs have them!" They do not. How do I know? I ordered a pair of ice bugs and they didn't have the metal knobs/spikes. I feel like I should mention that we're Native and this woman was throughly unpleasant to us. Sure felt like racism. The worker was an older white woman and fell all over herself with over the top friendly chit chat for all the other (white) customers. Not a single pleasant thing out of her mouth for us. No "sorry that you got the wrong info over the phone" no "sorry! I didn't see you standing there!" I'm really sorry to say we bought the boots. Should have gotten them elsewhere. Also, all the nonwhite employees looked miserable and I think I know why. One of the worst retail experiences ever. My daughter detected the rudeness too. She's young and is not quick to attribute things to racism, she was just confused by her rudeness. read more

I love this place. It is now on the list of places my mom and I go when we are running around Anchorage looking at Christmas stuff. Around the holidays they always have unique ornaments & decorations (the BEST find this year was 3-d glasses for all the kids we know - when you look at a single Christmas light they show images of either snowflakes, santa, or gingerbread man surrounding each and every little light! they are so much fun and were only $1.99!!). Their gift section has truly unique items, perfect for the hard-to-shop for on your list. Great selection of bird feeders & different varieties of bird seed. Great prices on dog toys, treat, & accessories in a large warehouse-type room. Fun candy & "stuff" assortment to browse while you are in line to check out. Staff is friendly and helpful. I like this shop, but I usually just come to get things for the pooch. Recently, I came in looking for biodegradable dog poo bags since the store I usually get it at was out. I thought it was strange that this place didn't have any of that sort. But, I did find a nice treat bag, a chew treat, a new collar, and bought a large non-biodegradable package of poo bags, so it wasn't a wasted trip. I don't come this way too often since it's down by the port, but it's not hard to get to or find. If I wanted to get into gardening I would definitely come here. Nice shop and nice personnel. One neat feature is this place will allow dogs into the shop, so that's nice. I didn't know and left my boy in the car. He definitely knew he was getting something special when he smelled the chew treat and couldn't wait to get home to get into it. It was a good way to spend National Dog Day. read more

Love it! Alaska Mill is *the* place to go for gardening supplies and dog & cat food. They have a wide selection of organic soils, plant foods, & natural pesticides. Bonus points for making their own compost tea, sold by the gallon, and selling beneficial creatures like worms & nematodes. They have a decent live plant selection, though I've noticed their plants tend to be rootbound. Most of their plant varieties are attuned to the conditions in Southcentral Alaska. They have some cute gift items, a ton of Alaska Grown-logo stuff, Crocs of every style, wild bird seed, and a variety of pet accessories. Prices are a little high, but this is a local, independent business! They have a customer loyalty program called the Barn Card that gets you coupons a few times a year.
