I've been using The Pet Stop for a number of years for the dogs the rescue I worked with. Recently I began taking my own personal dogs there. The atmosphere of the clinic is the same. The response time from emails and phone calls is a bit slower than previous and definitely not as quick as I would hope, but all in all it's a solid clinic that I trust. Made an appointment and had both dogs seen today. I think they're great here! Our male Italian Greyhound was showing signs of the flu. It was vaccine time anyway so get him checked out too while there. He was sneezing and had a cough, they reassured me it was nothing this time but dogs can get the flu. There is a vaccine for it and it's pretty active, going around in the lower 48 right now. Since we have Fly Dogs as we travel, especially since they're show dogs, they come in contact with other dogs all over the country. Lower 48 dogs come here to compete with ours all the time. In Alaska you only need the Rabies Vaccine once every 3 years unlike in the lower 48! Also after age 7 dogs build an natural immunity to Parvo. So no Parvo for our older 13 year old boy. This was the last Parvo shot for our girl too as she's 6. Dr. Wilson is also the Anchorage Zoo's vet too. They handle the whole spectrum of animals and our experience has been very good here overall. But they are booked out weeks in advance. If you need a Health Certificate to fly book it out about 10 days in advance of your flight. Our dogs are small enough to go in cabin. We all consider our pets family, and We have for years trusted them with ours. Next 2 appointments are to clean teeth. Poor old boy needs a few extractions too. But heck he's like 83 in dog years! read more

THE WORST. Docs are ok, but the support staff at the desk are completely indifferent to you. It is extremely clear that this clinic's primary goal is to make money. Period. They overcharge for substandard services. After simple nail trim my little wiener dog bled from a dewclaw for hours. They didn't even tell me about it. When we got her home my lap was all bloody. A one star review for The Pet Stop is too much. I would not recommend them to my worst enemy. We lost our 8 year old boy due to their constant mis diagnosis, yet they will not take responsibility and keep trying to put the blame on us. When it comes down to it, blame really doesn't matter as we will never get our boy back. I am only writing this review to warn others and hopefully prevent this from happening again. It has been over a week, I had to go in to request his records as they would not email them to me like they said they would and I have yet to hear back from the Dr or the office manager and have left several messages. I have been with the pet stop for over 1.5 year(s). I have met with most of the veterinarians and they have all been wonderful. I have a French Bulldog and they have been so thorough with her treatments for her liver, allergies and did her spay. I have been able to squeeze my pup in for a sore back on a Monday and they have been taking every precaution with her liver counts. My recommendation is to not even waste your time. We have a 30lb Cocker Spaniel in need of a trim. The person on the other end of the phone call who was supposed to be helping us set the appointment up was short with us and somewhat dismissive. She stressed several times that if we weren't there by 8:30 AM today our dog would not be seen. Being a professional, I understand the importance of time, but it was over-stressed to the point of being rude and awkward. This morning, we took our dog in at 8:15 AM for his appointment. He was a little timid as this was a brand new experience for him at a different location and with a different groomer he had never met. Because he was acting uncertain and a little scared, the person refused to work with my dog. My wife assured the groomer that we've had the dog for three years and he has never even acted aggressive toward anyone. Yet, the groomer simply said that he preferred not to take the chance and made no effort to become familiar with him. I am not bitter about the experience as businesses have the right of refusal. This place just didn't seem very accommodating or eager to gain my business. So if I were you, I would search for a dog groomer that works to gain your business, not one that expects you to work to be their customer. read more

After over 20 years of taking my critters to this location I am done. I loved Dr. Wilson and would've put up with the terrible front desk treatment for him, but he is gone and after yesterday's phone interaction with the dismissive, interrupting, condescending, rude receptionist, so am I. I know several people who have left for the same reason. If I could give negative stars - I would! I have taken many animals here. My dog, my dads girlfriends animals, a friend's animals. But the treatment my dads cat received along with the following poor customer service is beyond anything I would've expected from a reputable organization. My dad's cat went in for a routine cleaning. She was an older cat so they suggested that we make sure she had IV hydration the day before and the day after her cleaning. The bill was over $1,000. That's not the bad part. The bad part is that something happened to poor Madison while she was at the vet and her hip/leg was broken her back leg. we alerted the vet that she was not well when she was returned to us and they said they didn't know what happened. They informed us that with her broken hip/ leg, she needed to be put down. My dad was very upset. We all were. He requested that the manager call him. Twice he made the request. No one ever called. While I liked the vet and I put my dog down at this facility and they were very caring to me personally at that time... I can't forget that something happened to my dads cat in their care and they would not even call to discuss it. Every time we drive by pet stop we all look over there and either anger or sadness comes over all of us. I will never take another animal to pet stop. To add painful insult to injury they charged us for putting her down. It has been almost 2 years and it is taken me this long to be able to write this review because I was so angry. Here's an overview before the more detailed account. PROS: - reasonably priced - flexible schedules - spay/neuter policy CONS: - extremely laggy at returning accurate price quotes. sometimes, they forget. - hit-or-miss staff, ranging from receptionists to even veterinarians. - cleanliness. appears clean, but odors and old basic equipment are unimpressive. entryway and mats are stained with urine odor and wet animal scent. pet mats for check-ups are old, stained, scratched, and unclean-looking - TERRIBLE experience with 1 of the vets! she was terse, judgmental, and cold. ---------- PROS: - Decently priced, comparable to many lower 48 clinics. - Flexible scheduling. You do not have to wait weeks on end for an appointment. - They do believe in waiting to spay/neuter around 6 months, as opposed to neutering/spaying prematurely. There are many vets now that endorse early spay/neuter, as early as 6 weeks-10 weeks. I personally prefer to wait until the dog/cat is at least 5 months, so for me, this was a pro. CONS: - The clinic is not good at all about getting back to you with specific quotes. The best method is to go in person and ask when you are paying for something. That isn't how it should be, though. - The front desk is hit or miss. Compared to other veterinary clinics, they have many more receptionists. If the receptionists were all rated highly in service and hospitality, then it would be an all-around win. However, the Pet Stop receptionists are a mixed bag. They have 1-2 very friendly and warm receptionists. They also have a handful of very youthful receptionists, which are neither exceptional nor terrible in service or friendliness- they seem fairly flat. There are 1-2 unfriendly/terse receptionists, whom make calling or checking in/out unpleasant. - Hygiene issues. The place APPEARS clean. However, there are 2 large points of improvement. 1) the entryway mats smell quite noticeably of urine and wet animals. Cleanliness is the cornerstone of business, healthcare, and professionalism. 2) the pet mats on check-up tables are very old and used/dirty-looking. They have likely been wiped down between visits (hopefully, at least), but they SEEM dirty and ratty from stains, punctures, scratches, dents, etc. Also, they are an unattractive brown, which doesn't help the appearance. When I asked if we could do without the mat, the vet tech treated us coldly. We had to wipe down the table with cleanser ourselves. - I've met with 3 different vets here. The first, Dr. Versteeg, was friendly and conversational. The second, Dr. Michetti, was the friendliest of the 3 and also very pleasant. Both vets did seem to like pets and the customers. Because the first two vets were decent, I rated 2 stars instead of 1... Now for the 3rd. The third was the worst vet experience I've had in Anchorage. So many things were off, that I have to list them: 1) From the moment she walked in, she seemed like she just wanted to finish her day/didn't want to be bothered. Throughout the meeting, she wanted to get through the check-up as soon as possible. 2) Needless to say, there was 0 small talk, eye contact, or conversation, although I am a very friendly and conversational. When she would ask a question and I would answer, she did not want to hear my whole answer, only a very short version. I felt as if I was being cut off- not by anything she said, but if I went on to more than two sentences, she would look around and say very little. 2) Worst of all, she did not seem like she enjoyed her job/time with our family member/pets. She virtually ignored our pet and did not say one positive thing, until we were walking out. As we were, she mentioned haphazardly that it was a nice pet. It seemed like a meaningless formality. During the check-up, she did not hold or pet or say hi to our pet. She held it for the check-up part, but otherwise would let it roam around the table. She would grab the pet whenever it was about to jump off the table. She barely acknowledged us or the pet throughout the meeting. This was behavior I have never seen in a vet. 3) What put the nail in the coffin was that she came off as very judgmental; we felt that as clients, she was judging our choices, opinions, and choices for our pets, even our feeding choices. It felt like she was talking over us. I want to work WITH my practitioners, not against them, and I CERTAINLY do not want a judgmental practitioner. That's blatantly unprofessional. BOTTOM LINE: I can deal with a quiet or even terse vet, as long as they are very professional, knowledgeable, and demonstrate visible interest/excitement in their job. However, I'm not okay with a vet that seems like he/she doesn't enjoy their job and being around animal(s). Coming from a family of doctors, I don't expect all doctors to be unrealistically cheery or doting all the time or even at all, but I do expect them to be professional. Horrible experience. Prior to making my appointment for my 18-year old cat, I spoke with the front desk person via phone. She mentioned that a rabies vaccine is usually required before a vet would see my cat. I explained to her that he is 18 years old, and he hasn't been outside, other than on my 2nd level deck, for over 15 years. She told me that the vet may reconsider, and to speak to the vet about it upon arrival. I had to wait ONE MONTH to get an appointment. But I waited. Upon arriving, the ladies behind the front desk seemed unorganized. The one who finally chose to make eye contact with me and reluctantly greet me handed me the new patient form to fill out. She asked if my cat had the rabies vaccine, and I told her what the lady on the phone had told me when I made the appointment. She became very sarcastic, and said it wouldn't be likely that they would see my cat without it. I asked if I could speak to the vet for just one minute, and she said, "if you so much as spend one minute with the vet, then you will be charged for a full appointment". At this point, I was almost in tears, partially because I was frustrated, and also because of her blatant rudeness. I was in disbelief. I explained how I had waited a month for this appointment, and I had just hauled my cat across town. She said, "I don't mean to sound sarcastic, but you don't HAVE to take him here." WOW. I packed up my cat and went home. The search is on. I will spread the word about this place and will also be contacting their owners, who look to be Lakefield Vet Group out of Washington: 253-216-1310 to complain and to let them know how their employees are treating people, and in return, my cat, who is NOT just my cat, but our family companion! read more

I've had a handful of negative experiences here, and am reluctant to go back. 1) Receptionists seem cold. Phone dialogue is usually unhelpful, often quickly redirected to "so do you want an appointment, or not"? I've been hung up on a couple times, which I'm assuming is because they were busy. During checkout receptionists don't make eye contact, are sharp, and have charged me for the wrong appointment which I then addressed, and was questioned about as if I didn't know what I had brought my dog in for. Once they realized their mistake, there was no apology. 2) Prices are not upfront. You find out the cost of service upon checkout, and there is no payment plan available. I generally bring $200.00 with me and most of my visits have been around $125.00.(De-worming, dermis sampling, parvo shots, etc). 3) A general lack of cleanliness. There was a puddle of pee right behind my chair the entire time I was waiting, and I waited for quite a while, though we arrived on schedule. 4) My paperwork was NEVER tracked, nor was it ever used to reference previous exams with. They insisted that I get a shot for my dog that he had already had and I had to bring in proof of paperwork that the shot was given to him (even though it was done there). Keep all of your receipts. Keep all of your checkup dates on your calendar. This was an ongoing issue and could have lead to my dog getting duplicate shots. With my second visit, I came to find out that my dog was not in their file. I saw two female veterinarians. One was very sweet to my dog. She seemed to adore him and made him feel comfortable and chatted with him. The second was a little more terse, but still friendly. The visit felt less like she wanted to get to know the dog and owner even for the sake of "extra" information for future visits. I didn't have much of a problem with the vets, however. read more

Came here on the recommendation of several long time customer friends and I could not love them more. In my opinion you can tell when a vet really cares for the animals they treat and both Dr. Versteeg and Dr. Boyd have been so loving, kind, caring and affectionate to my two dogs! They have helped me plan out care for my senior dog and always take the time to go beyond just medical issues into concern for his well being and quality of life. They have given my great advice on food, exercise etc. I have been to several vets in town trying to find a good fit and my experience is that most will charm you an arm and a leg to do the bare minimum and don't care about having a long term relationship with you as a customer. Still my go to Pet Stop. I bring the 2 pooches annually and always strive to get an appointment with Dr. Riley Wilson; he just has such a fantastic way about him with the animals' overall comfort. Every time my animals stop by for shots or overall checkups they seem somewhat happy, though Mr. B has a bit of anxiety around other pooches, and the staff are friendly and accomodating. I will always recommend this place and have been a solid fan for 5 years now. I'm lucky a friend recommended this place after we banned our previous vet shop for lack of friendly atmosphere, but that is how the dog cookie crumbles. read more

Do not recommend. First impression when I called them was snooty and dismissive, and I wish I had not given them a second chance. My dog is terrified of having his nails trimmed. It was suggested I try a vet clinic who could provide more complete care. For $18, this is the only place that made my dog bleed. I told them of dog's issues. The technician was rude throughout. She didn't greet me, then brought dog out bleeding, just said he was naughty and oh yeah we cut him. Not apologetic or sympathetic. They had nothing to restrain him with like the pet stores do, so of course him trying to get away would be a problem. No offers of restitution or treat. Never going back read more

Absolutely love the Pet Stop! Started coming here several years ago after my friendly neighborhood clinic suddenly closed. My dog and I have been very happy with the service and lever of care that we have received here, and I feel that their prices are fair. I also have several friends who bring their pets here and are also very happy with their services. I also love the in house groomer. He makes notes about my dog so that each time she comes back, he knows her a little better. My dog absolutely hates grooming, but adores him. He's a true pro who has been at the Pet Stop forever! It doesn't hurt that the price of a full groom is about half of what I used to pay at PetSmart for some random kid to bathe and brush my dog! Don't take your pet here!! I dropped off my 9 month old puppy for a routine neuter procedure when the vet called me later that afternoon stating she made a mistake during surgery. She explained when she made the neuter incision and pulled his testicles up to snip, she "accidentally" let his blood vessel slip thru her fingers and back inside, near his kidneys. She then had to cut his abdomen open to cauterize the blood vessel or he would have bled to death. When I picked him up he had a 5 inch incision on his stomach as well as the neuter incision. It was bad enough my dog had to endure two surgeries, but how they handled things after showed even more negligence and incompetency on their part. The Petstop "fit" my dog for a cone to wear around his neck so he couldn't lick the surgery sites. When I was asleep that night I could hear him licking and noticed he could actually reach the incisions...they didn't give him the correct size cone. I couldn't sleep the entire night because I was trying to watch him, worried he would cause infection. I brought him back the next day to get the proper size. Two and a half weeks later I wanted to make sure he was healing properly (although they never stated a need for a follow up) so I brought him to the same vet that performed the operation. She said he was fine to take the cone off, even if he licks the scar, he will be ok. Fast forward 2 weeks later and I noticed my puppy was lethargic and kept licking at his wound on his abdomen. I decided to take him to another vet clinic where they said his stitches inside were not yet dissolved. The incision became inflamed from him licking so they prescribed anti inflammatories/pain pills and told me to keep a cone on him. It's been a month and he's still healing from what was supposed to be a routine neuter. The Petstop is operated like a mill, only caring about getting as many pets thru as possible. Because this review is already so long, I left out even more horrible treatment from this place. They're lucky I didn't sue for the unnecessary pain and suffering of my puppy, let alone the stress it caused me while I was 7 months pregnant. If you care about your pet, take them to a reputable vet clinic, not this substandard place. read more

My cat has long fluffy fur to the point he completely gives up on grooming it and winds up matted. I try to brush him before them but he fights me on it. No place in town would accept him, then petco suggested this place. I agreed to the optional sedation, because I understand the reality of cats. They're not all friendly and even the ones that are have teeth and claws. Luckily they said they had no issues! He didn't need sedated and they said he was sweet as can be, everyone loved him. I was so worried about leaving him someplace with people I didn't know but they took good care of him! My only issue was the price. The lady in front of me paid $60 for her little cottonball dog to get shaved but it cost me around $260 for a cat. read more

We have had two pets that we bring them to. Everyone there is pretty helpful and the vets have all been nice. They are normally really busy. The only complaint I would have is how much they charge to cut my dogs nails. I think I paid around $17 last time?! That's pretty high! read more

I took my 2 cats here for grooming and they did not tell me when i made the appointment that I must agree to allow them to give sedation at their discretion during the grooming. I went ahead and agreed for my younger but my senior kitty I did not want to have sedated, he has never been sedated or needed it. So rather rudely they declined him, as I spoke to the guy who was actual groomer I was appalled at the smell and the groomer table was filthy, like never had been cleaned. I left my cat but have never returned to that dirty place. read more

This place is truly great, from regular check ups to squeezing you in when you've got a sick kitty. I've seen 3 different vets here depending on who was available and they've all been amazing--friendly, thorough, happy to answer questions, and will often call the day after a visit to make sure everything is ok. My kitty's recent bout with pneumonia and a kidney infection was not cheap, but the doctor did try to save me money on blood work and meds where possible, which I really appreciated. So glad a friend sent me here when I first moved to Alaska. read more
