Petzoo is my go to pet store in Anchorage. It is conveniently located off Dimond Blvd and Old Seward Hwy, and there is always plenty of parking, which makes quick stops easy. They have a great selection of food for both cats and dogs, along with tons of treats and toys to choose from. This is where I usually shop for canned dog food. They carry the Nulo wet food pouches that my Shiba Inu absolutely loves. He is such a picky eater these days! They also have a good variety of Honest Kitchen products, which I really appreciate. They also have big selection of Stella & Chewy's freeze dried raw dog food toppers. My dogs especially like the raw freeze dried chicken. The place was super clean and organized when I stopped in a couple weeks ago. I don't think I've ever walked out empty handed. The staff is consistently friendly and approachable. They have the one Dog Food I haven't found anywhere else in Anchorage Orijen. The store is nice and they have a Points Program too! Our dog food is expensive and it adds up & when you hit a certain amount they give you a $25 gift coupon in the mail, but they've now gone to a point system on receipts and you're now able to redeem points at any time. They don't mail the certificates anymore and you're able to redeem in person. Our pets are our family, we love to treat them right and Pet Zoo accomplishes that. P.S. free popcorn! read more

What a horrible experience. Generally I look the other way with rude behavior but today was ridiculous. Slow service with one employee standing and just watching the other two that are hard working. Then that guy steps in and raises his voice at a customer when they asked a question about the lines they had. It seemed like he was new as a "supervisor" but this was unbelievable. I'd suggest some remedial training for this guy and maybe put him in back of the store rather than interfacing with customers. Times are tough, especially now. Pet Zoo should consider customer satisfaction as importantly as they do making money. I'd recommend you just go further west on Dimond and go to PetsMart. read more

I've spent roughly $3000 a year at PetZoo since I got my dogs. With one exception, the staff has always been rude and superior-acting. The young man who was helpful has gone to work elsewhere. Today I was turned away because I refuse to wear a mask, and when I explained that I wouldn't be back the pink-haired (girl?) and her manager seemed thrilled. Go woke, go broke... they are on their way. Too bad, too, because they carried some good brands; the only reason I went there. To PetCo from now on, where my family and I know half of the staff by name, and where respect is easy to expect. read more

I love that this place is Alaskan owned. I've been in here 3 or 4 times. They do carry many items that other pet stores don't. Expensive and I have yet to have a good experience with a sales worker. I've never been asked "can i help you", "did you find what you needed" or "how are you doing?". My last visit a the worst. I went to The Pet Zoo last week, found my products and was at the check out. The little girl at the register was not happy with the placement of my mask. She was extremely rude about the way she conducted herself. I fixed my mask, like she wanted, and she still was rude and told me that's why they have curbside pick up for people like me. She reluctantly rang up my items. My mask moved slightly down when I was getting my wallet and then she said I HAD to use the curbside pick up because "obviously you can't keep your mask on." She started to delete my sale was not going to let purchase my items she already rang up! I called another customer service person over and the cashier was still complaining, but finally let me pay for my stuff. (Her tantrum caused me to spend more time in the store than was necessary.) We spend A LOT of money on nutrition and entertainment for our pets. We will no longer be shopping at The Pet Zoo. We support local businesses when possible but if that's how pet Zoo is treating the patrons of their store, we will happily go to Ak Mill and Feed. I LOVE SHOPPING AT THIS PLACE FOR PET SUPPLIES! This is an exceptional place to but pet products at. This is mostly because Pet Zoo has a great variety of products to choose from and their staff seem to be well trained. Every time I enter Pet Zoo, the staff members are friendly and are knowledgeable about the products that they're selling. If for some reason a employee doesn't know what the answer to your question is, they'll go the extra mile to find out what the answer is. This is a rare experience from other pet stores I've been to such as Pet Smart or Pet Co. Not only do they have awesome staff and product selections but being a reward member pays as well. If a customer earns a certain amount of points from shopping at Pet Zoo often, he or she could get their purchases for free. This is truly the best pet store in town and it is worth the money as well. read more

I've been coming here for a couple years since this is the only place that carries K9 caviar and raw instinct at this time in Alaska. The prices are expensive but, so are they online for this particular product. The customer service here is excellent, they are quick to ask if you'd like items carried out to your car and I really appreciate that when I am by in 22 pound bags of dog food LOL I highly recommend this place to anyone needing quality pet Food read more

I just got the worst service ever here at the Dimond location. I walked in to buy an item. I then was swarmed by 3 of the employees with the most rude and smug attitudes. I chose not to buy here and I said I'll never go shopping there again. The manager said in a very syrupy and better than thou attitude, "Have a nice day." Absolutely abhorrent people especially the manager which, obviously, reflects on the rest of the staff. Petsmart, you've now got my business. I like to fondly refer to PetZoo as being my cats' drug dealer. They have the greatest selection of pure cat ganj, and the kitties go ballistic when I bring them feline-sized dimebags of sweet Alaskan cat kush. Only the best from PZ! PZ also carries a ton of different foods and toys. I used to buy my cats Feline Caviar, and the only annoyance was that the big bags weren't always in stock. (My cats have since changed their food preference, so this isn't a concern.) I like supporting a local pet business, especially since their prices aren't much different than a big chain. That reminds me -- they frequently send coupons, which I have a $5 one I am eager to spend on more cat drugs! read more

I was EXTREMELY disappointed with Petzoo and that is putting it midly. I live on the Kenai Peninsula and only travel to Anchorage when necessary for work. I purchased a collar for a wireless fence, it was pricey - $175.00. The next time I was in Anchorage I tried to return the collar because I found the exact same thing online for 1/2 the price. The exchange policy is 14 days, I was 2 days too late. You know, we keep hearing these "Buy Local" campaigns and I just have to laugh. If you want me to buy local you better give me service. All I got was "do you have some other shopping to do?" Why would I continue to shop at a store that treated it's customers this way. I visited their website and it says "Our focus on a "customer first" attitude is unparalleled in the industry..." I think not. I have made purchases from online companies that give you 365 to return unused items, which mine was. I will never shop at this store again and I will recommend to anyone who will listen they will be better off spending their dollar anywhere but here. read more

This is my ode to pet zoo. There is no other place I will go for my pet needs than here. Why? Well it certainly helps that I frequently, nearly bi-weekly, find $5 coupons tucked safely in my mail box. I have a myriad of small plastic card thingies taking up precious real estate on my key chain, and rarely do I reap the rewards for dutifully presenting it to the cashier at check out. Not the case with Pet Zoo. About every 3-4 months I receive a $25 gift certificate that does not expire that I can spend whenever I want and however I choose. I have two cats so it is not as though I have to shop for them on a daily basis to satisfy their needs. And they regularly have my brands on sale. Before I shopped at Pet Zoo I went to the other local pet store on the other side of town and never did I receive any customer appreciation, not even a $5 coupon. Plus these guys have gone out of their way to get the product I need when I needed it. Back when my cats ate Feline Caviar I went to Pet Zoo only to find that they were out. Feline Caviar only sells their brand to small local businesses, so popping into to Petco or Petsmart wasn't an option. One of the employees asked if I needed help and so I told them my predicament. Bad news, they didn't have any in stock, good news, they had it at the Eagle River store and they could work their magic to get it to the store later that evening. I was skeptical, but lo and behold that evening I received a call notifying me the food had arrived! yay! Kitty food crisis averted! Nothing but the best for my cats(and lets be honest I'd give my cat a 5 star review on here if I could). While the box stores are shiny and there are plenty of products that sparkle, the quality of products at Pet Zoo is second to none. And Pet Zoo lacks the pretension of the other local pet store in town. read more

I have been shopping here for a couple of years. They sell 36 + crickets for $4.19, I noticed there was not 36 in the tub we bought. When it happened again this week I called and talked to a manager . His remedy was for me to drive back to the store and I could wait while they counted out 36+. Their food choices are very healthy and have a great range, even for my finicky dog. The workers always offer great advice and show their passion for animals, too. Love supporting Alaska businesses. After poor treatment at Petsmart, where they wouldn't let my fiancé's son hold a hamster before buying we went to PetZoo and they treated him and his big decision very nicely. This is a great Alaskan pet store. It's a small store but carries the brands of dog food our Alaskan dog craves. I can always ring the Nutra and Blue Buffalo products we need. My son and I had horrible experience shopping here. I favored this place over a national Big-Box cause I live in Alaska and I want to support local business. After our experience here I am disappointed to say I do not recommend shopping here. Local business or not, I expect competitive pricing and friendly service. Sadly prices for all the items on my list were uniformly higher, and in many cases shockingly higher. The last straw was when we were yelled at and insulted by an employee that was upset that we asked for help finding the hermit crab salt. "IT"S RIGHT IN FRONT OF YOU! My family and I love going here. We have 2 dogs that we buy stuff for and my kids love looking at the other animals they have in the store. The reason for knocking off one star is because the brand of dog food that we get costs actually $20 more over here compared to petco or Alaska mill and feed which is another local store. & when you have huge dogs like we do, it adds up! Great staff, very kind and attentive, they helped me fit a muzzle on my pup so he won't be able to bite me when I have to give him his weekly shot. The store is tidy and well-staffed, and my dog likes the snacks they offered him, although he prefers the popcorn! As for the one star review complaining that a customer found the same item online cheaper, but is "all about supporting a local store" - I realize it's a couple of years old - I do not see how the reviewer fails to see the huge problem with her review. You're complaining because you shopped online and beat a local store that has a return policy that accounts for the fact that they are a bricks and mortar local store with overhead, and not some drop ship warehouse out in an industrial park in some nameless L48 suburb. And then the bricks and mortar store wouldn't match or accept a return for an item you bought from some warehouse in suburban Atlanta or something. So as a result, other people shouldn't support the local bricks and mortar store? That makes a WHOLE lot of sense. And it is really, really unfair for you to give them a bad review because they didn't acquiesce to your unreasonable demand. And no, I don't own PetZoo, I just shop there, and I hope they stay in business despite the best efforts of Petco, Petsmart etc. to run them out of business. read more
