I wish I never went to this place. I went to Alan Optical because they are in network with my vision insurance, which I pay a lot for. I went to Alan Optical on 11/10/25 and although I only went over my frame allowance by $25 I was charged and paid (stupidly) $807. I thought...well maybe there will be an adjustment when I get the EOB. The EOB dated 11/25/25 says I owe $375 so I call Alan Optical and they say, oh, this was billed wrong. We just dont know how much we owe you. We will work on it. They apparently rebill because on 3/9/26 I get a NEW EOB saying I owe $80. I call Alan Optical and they say the EOB is wrong and tbe insurance company (who THEY contracted with) is notoriously difficult to deal with. I explain my frustration and I'm told basically to go pound sand. She literally told me "you're acting like this is my fault." I have emailed both EOBs and made calls and I have to deal with the fact that I got ripped off. Beware. read more

In this day and age it is a very rare occasion when you can actually expect and receive service at a Drs. Office at your appointment time. That is what I like about Alan Optical, and that is just a plus since I have been going there at a minimum of once a year for over 20 years. I cant imagine going and seeing anyone else other than Dr. Keith Mihaly or his associates. Dr. Mihaly is very personable, takes the time to understand and help resolve any issues and is very perceptive to anything he might find and to provide a solution! I value his perspective and opinions. I also really like the office staff who have always been very helpful and assisted me with selecting new glasses . I highly recommend Alan Optical to anyone looking for quality service and not a cookie cutter franchise store! read more

The doctors here are very nice but the process of buying and trying on glasses can get annoying. I usually have a certain look and price in mind but the workers often encourage you to try out different styles and vary your budget. I tend to prefer a quicker visit, so that can get frustrating if you want to have a more efficient experience. They do clean your glasses during visits and give you a once-over to see how they fit. Oddly, the worker told me that the glasses looked a little crooked. I handed them back to her to adjust and she said it's a "little better." Definitely not a promising note to leave the office with. Hopefully the workers in that area work to boost confidence and make adjustments that actually fix a problem. Nonetheless, the actual time with the doctor is worthwhile. read more

I had been a patient of Dr. Mihaly for over two decades. Over the past several years, I developed cataracts and needed surgery. Dr. Mihaly recommended one, whom by now I'm pretty sure he has a "deal" with.... Based on my own research and recommendations from friends, I chose a different surgeon. Not long after the surgery, I had an eye situation that I needed help with. When I called Dr. Mihaly, he told me to call my new doctor! It has been made clear to me by Dr. Mihaly and his office staff that I'm no longer welcome as a patient. Today, I went there with broken frames that I had purchased at Alan Optical, they made zero attempt to help me. I had planned on continuing my eye care here... but, after today... nope!! I had a good experience with my eye exam but the office upsold me on +$800 contacts as a first time contacts wearer. I was making the purchase over the phone and am a little disgusted how I felt taken advantage of by this. I didn't know contacts regularly go for much cheaper online and they were not forthcoming on giving me my contacts prescription. Not pleased. read more

I bought prescription Ray Ban sunglasses at Alan Optical. Sean helped with the purchase and was super helpful. When I came in to pick up the glasses, we had a hard time getting them to sit right on my face. Sean was incredibly patient and had great attention to detail. I went here for years and thoroughly enjoyed going there. I probably would have gone blind if it weren't for Dr. Sheade! Within this past year, I severely damaged my eye health from colored contacts and the receptionist there did not let me live it down and mocked me in front of other patients after every check up I had. She also was suggesting for me to buy eye drops my optometrist specifically told me NOT to get. When my eyes mostly healed and I was able to finally wear regular contacts again she asked me "do your eyes feel better after your dumb mistake?"..... contemplating never going back. read more

Finding a doctor/professional service is hard whether it is a dentist, eye doctor, regular doctor, etc. It is very personal when it is in regards to your health. After moving to Arlington Heights a few years ago, it was time find a new eye doctor. Based on some reviews and the fact they took my vision insurance, I decided to try Alan Optical. I called to make an appoint and the staff is very friendly. They send you a text message the day before to remind you of your appointment. I have had both Erica and Keith and both have been excellent. I have been going there for the past three years and they are always on time. I hate when doctor's offices run behind schedule by a long time. This is not the case here. I order contacts through them and they provide rebate information and will also send you a text message to pick them up. They are also willing to ship them to you if you would rather go that route. Overall, the staff is very friendly and make everything easy to understand. As long as I live in the area and they continue to take my vision insurance, I will continue to use them for my eye doctors. read more

No matter which doctor I see I get professional, competent care that is never rushed and they are wonderful with my kids as well. Honestly though, the ladies at the front desk are one of the biggest reasons I give them 5 stars and go back year after year. They are always friendly, willing to figure out my insurance and explain coverage to me. They take time with my kids to choose glasses and assess the fit and offer reassurance. I love Dr. Mihaly and the office staff. As a child, my father always insisted that I see an opthalmologist (instead of an optometrist.) For years, during my eye exam, I said I saw two of everything - one more prominent than the other, but the second one overlapping the first. I was told "look at the dark one". When I said the same thing to Dr. Mihaly many years ago (almost 30 years?!), he started switching lenses, and the images came closer and closer until I only saw one! It was then that I learned that I needed prism added to my lenses. Hallelujah! I can read street signs a lot sooner now! All four of us see Dr. Mihaly.
