I've been a loyal client of Alan Koa Salon and Spa for three years, ever since I followed my hairstylist here from another salon. This downtown gem is the perfect mix of trendy and classic, offering a stylish yet welcoming atmosphere where you'll feel comfortable, whether you're a professional or a student. Located right on the State Street Promenade and just blocks from campus and the Capitol. In July, I literally crossed the street after exiting the salon and had a man say, "Tell your boyfriend or husband he is blessed." So, if you want the same results, bookmark this review now and keep reading to find out who to schedule with! The salon features a comfortable waiting area, and the elevator access makes it easy for everyone to get to this fourth floor space. There's a pay parking garage attached, so parking is generally available if you're coming in from out of the area. I'm always impressed by the visible presence of the owner, which speaks to her dedication to the business. Plus, I often see stylists besides my own working time after time that I am there, so the fact that staff stays on year after year indicates to me there is a reason they stay on. Scheduling can be done by phone or online. Always available and easy. At the time of this writing there are some evening hours so book your next cut or color now. Tell Saiegon I sent you! read more

Superb silky cut from Tohria. I have fine thin blonde hair, and she understood it. She gave me the exact cut that I asked for, and it looks and feels great. They also have Kerastase products here - which are the best! read more

Alan Koa Salon Spa - Blunt cut + tad of an angle in the front. Nice silky cut, on fine thin hair, by Tohria - Hair Salons Near Me - Madison, Wisconsin

I went there for balayage hair style. The hair came out brassy in the front so I went back in to fix it. This time the stylist put more bleach in the front hair and completely burned off my front hair. Now I have to wait for it to regrow forever. The stylists have zero skills and don't know what they're doing. Second time I was only going to get a blowout I was 15 mins late. I was informed that the stylist could not fit me in and they charged me 50% for it. I have never had a salon ever charge me for being late like that. The owner did call and apologized and did not charge me for the late fee which I appreciated. read more

I contacted Alan Koa Salon via Wedding Wire to set up appointments for a bridal party 8 months in advance of our wedding. They were responsive and friendly. 4 months later, I called to check in with the salon and found out they had not booked any of the appointments and had no memory of the conversation. I sent them the screenshots of our entire conversation and they were very appologetic and did rebook our appointments but to me that feels quite unprofessional. I would not recommend their service to people as I feel this disorganization is not what you want on your wedding day. This should have been my lesson to not go with this salon for the big day but sadly, things got worse after the "we never had you in our books" phone call. COVID hit and our plans sadly changed a bit. I called the salon to change the date of the appointment. I called them a few days from the appointment and asked to reschedule, not to cancel but to reschedule the appointments and I was told I will have to pay 50% of the total cost regardless. In the bridal contract it specifically says cancellations will be charged 50%. It does not have anything regarding rescheduling being charged so it feels quite unfair. I would have loved to utilize their services but sadly, due to poor customer service, I'm out $350 and I would never recommend their service to anyone I know. read more

I have quite thick hair and wanted a haircut that would remove some of the weight. The haircut was average, there was still a lot of weight left in my hair. The hair washing didn't feel very thorough either. My hair is thick and requires some amount of elbow grease to wash but the woman who washed mine was not thorough, she didn't reach the nape of my neck either. I'm willing to go back to give it second chance, maybe I just got unlucky. read more

I have never been simultaneously excited and disappointed before. I have tried scheduling three appointments for three different times this upcoming weekend. They each were canceled without an explanation. I don't understand why they are showing availability with time slots, and then canceling the appointment the following morning. I wouldn't even waste your time trying to make an appointment. I would just look elsewhere and save yourself the headache and frustration. read more

The haircut I got just wasn't cute. I went back to get it fixed and it isn't any better. They were nice but that didn't make my haircut look good. I went home and had a small breakdown, as one does after getting a bad haircut. I don't feel better. Tomorrow I will buy a new hat... read more

It hurts to update my review like this, but my friend and I had a terrible experience. I have been coming to this salon for two years. I've gotten hair services, nail services, and massages here. I've recommended this salon to friends and finally, got around to actually bringing one with me. We had our hair appointment booked for a month and a half. When I called, I told the lady that my friend wanted a drastic change and basically wanted to do her whole head teal. Well talked about the possibility of that not working depending on her hair color. I said she was flexible and that was that. There was no mention of coming in for a consultation. So we get to our appointment and they tell my friend that they don't have the hair color. She says okay, and asks for another hair color. They don't have that either. So, they tell my friend who wanted a GLOBAL funky color that her only option was partial highlights. So they pick an ash blonde. She wanted to stay as far away from a golden honey blonde as possible. The lady gets done with what she says are highlights and not only are they patchy, they are the complete opposite of what she asked for in terms of color. My friend is near tears. On the other side of the wall... I'm having a great time. The lady who is working on me is sweet and funny. We discuss our plans for after our hair transformations. I tell her we are going out to eat as this is my birthday treat. So, she knew that. My color came out okay. I'm happy with it but it could have been way more vibrant. I told her to keep the length when she cut my hair and I feel she cut too much off. So, I'm 50% happy. Time to pay... My friend ends up having to pay $120 for balyage (spell check, please) that is patchy and not the color she wanted. She was not aware that what she was getting was going to be that big of a difference in price since she was expecting to pay $65ish for the global color. I'm not happy because at this point, there is color all over my f*cking forehead and I had to go to lunch like that. It ruined my lunch because I was so self conscious about the color all over my forehead, I couldn't look anyone in the eye or concentrate on anything else. We paid upscale salon prices for things we did not want and for cost cutters mistakes. I don't think I will ever come back here. Update: poured some $8.99 box color on my hair and it looks 10000% better and more vibrant. Stick to the box color. read more

I have actually been going here for a few years and have to say it has really gone downhill, especially for the high prices. The stylists are professional, but the quality of cuts and color is erratic at best. I had to go back in for a correction after the color was brassy and not even close to the scalp. The vibe from management is like they are above the customer, literally told me I could find another salon, even when I was polite. That led to this review. read more

I am modifying my previous post for one very simple reason - Cameo charges you whatever they wish and Melissa Simon, the Guest Manager, reserves the right to refuse to tell you how much things cost beforehand so they can rip you off to their heart's content later on. No kidding, a much nicer-sounding iteration of this is actually their stated policy. I booked my wedding party there for hair and makeup on my wedding day. The price was quoted at around $600 for four women including the bride. When I went in for my trial hairdo I was told it could be literally hundreds more. But nobody would tell me how much more. In fact, by the time I was done emailing with Melissa, as it turns out the BARE MINIMUM of the cost was $600. What I was told, in essence, was that Cameo's prices are based on the whim of the designers. How do they themselves determine the prices of their services? This is a black box, if you're a customer. Frankly, it's probably a black box if you're Melissa Simon, as well. Melissa's most amazing statement: "If you can get past the issue of cost, I think you could have a good experience with us." Are you kidding? One does need to plan out a wedding budget in advance. Come on, Cameo you doofs. Why not change your policy to be like EVERY OTHER SALON IN THE WORLD and just charge by the time something takes, the service in question, and the experience level of the stylist? It causes people NOT TO HATE YOU. It's a spa, and it's supposed to be relaxing, and there's nothing less relaxing than walking out all ticked off because you just got stuck paying a bill that was much more than you had been led to believe it would be. That goes double on your wedding day. We canceled our wedding block at Cameo and rebooked at a salon willing to give a price range for services, but I look forward to looking at Cameo's website and seeing some positive changes in the future. read more

I cannot say enough good things about Emily!! A few months ago I experienced a hair nightmare where the stylist went to town on bleach and seriously damaged my hair. I nursed it for a while, and let about two inches grow before fixing it, pretty much wearing my hair up with headbands every day. This weekend I was in town for a wedding and couldn't handle it anymore, so I started calling around looking for someone who could fit me in. By some amazing stroke of luck I was able to get an appointment the same day, and I am so, SO happy it turned out to be with Emily! I explained to her that I wanted it softened up, close to my natural color on the top and faded gently through the ends. She was so decisive about her color choices, and explained to me what she was doing every step of the way. She ended up doing a reverse balayage with the color closest to my natural, leaving the porous ends untouched for the time being. Conversation flowed super smoothly the whole time and it was truly a pleasure to hang out with her while she was creating her masterpiece on my head. After the balayage had developed she washed it out and then applied a glaze in a slightly darker level than my ends all over to blend everything. I literally could not believe my eyes when she was finished- it was like she plucked my vision right out of my head and made it a reality. My hair looks and feels amazing! Such an instant confidence boost. Thank you, Emily!! You are awesome. read more

I just went in this past Thursday before graduation and needed a touch up to my balayage I got a few months ago. Simply put, Emily is still amazing. She talked me through some gloss colors to help me visualize what I wanted and I walked out with quite possibly the best hair I've ever had. read more

The first time I went to Cameo was when they were still on Pinkney. I always had great service and loved the vibe of the spa. Very relaxing. After the moved to their current space, I've had 2 not-so-great massages. One was a regular massage. Not the best. Furthermore, I listened to banging of doors, etc. in the room next to me! So irritating! The last massage I had there was a pregnancy massage. It sucked. The woman barely touched me, had me lay at an angle on my back and repeatedly asked if I wanted my feet rubbed. I said no and she did it anyway! She finished the massage before the time was up (I guess that wasn't totally horrible considering). I'd recommend other places, but don't go to Cameo! read more

I loved this salon. First of all it's beautiful. And the views on the 4th floor are spectacular. Kalli was my stylist and she was great. I explained exactly how I wanted my hair blown, and she did a fabulous job. My hair is so soft and smooth. I love it. Plus Kalli and I had some great conversations. Definitely my new salon whenever I visit Madison! read more

Ah, this salon is swanky as heck. They offer you tea or water when you come in. It's a little bit odd of a location when you're trying to find it the first time around, but once you get up to their floor and see the set up, you forget about any confusion trying to find it. The chairs on the window-side are really nice, and you're right there next to the Capitol. Be aware of scheduling yourself for a stylist's last appointment of the day. The stylist I followed (Fazia!) when she moved from a place on East Johnson to Alan Koa told me about that. Fazia has always been patient and thorough, listening to my requests, and checking in throughout the process to make sure I'm happy with my hair. Their hair washing chairs a little uncomfortable, but the upsides of this place weigh out any of my little concerns. The desk staff is always friendly as well. Be ready to cash out some dough; this place is not for someone looking to get a casual trim. read more

DANIELLE. DANIELLE. DANIELLE. Sorry, I'm not stalking Danielle (at least that's not the subject of this inquiry), but I have to get my point across. DANIELLE! I am super particular, in all aspects of my life, but also with my hair. I have been through many a boyfriend, many an employer, and many a hairdresser. I now stay quite a bit out of town but will wait the 3 months to get my hair colored (yes, we all know that's painful) just to be able to have Danielle do it when I'm back in town. I have been beyond satisfied with her skills with both cuts and color, but especially color. She can do everything -- super fine blonde highlights, crazy ombres, Heidi Klum bangs -- you name it. Worth both the wait and price. DANIELLE! read more

Booked a massage here because it was close to the hotel. I definitely wasn't disappointed by any means with the service in my massage room (that's why I gave it a 3 instead of a 2). Although, the front desk and "quiet room" service was a little awkward. It seemed that the people helping out up front had difficulties "taking care" of their clients. I was placed in the "quiet room" to wait for my spa service. As I waited, two different front desk girls continually came through the door to fill up water pitchers, make tea, and replenish glasses. This room was definitely not a quiet room. Typically, when at the spa, you put your robe on immediately before entering the quiet room. When asked if I could change into my robe (after I was in the quiet room for 20 + minutes), I was told that I could but that I could also do it when I get into the massage room. It seemed like my question was off-the-wall and I might have confused the person I was asking the question to. The overall massage was very good and made up for the sophomoric front desk workers. After the hour was up, I felt so good that I didn't even pay attention to the help during the check-out process. I went back to the hotel happy. read more

I went for my birthday and lovedddd my gift to myself! I booked a 45 minute massage and then they tacked on a hair style for me, which was a really nice gesture. The massage is the most important part, though. Jamie was my amazing masseuse. She really pinpointed my problem areas and seemed to know actual ways to help them. It almost felt like an appointment with a physical therapist instead of a relaxing massage. I'd like to come in every two weeks, but the price is hindering ... thus the 4 stars instead of 5 for now. I am going to aim for every month to help with my aches, though. Jamie was just so good to me! Amy styled my hair and she was sweet. She gave me soft curls. I loved them! read more

I got into town early and needed a pedicure for my meeting and shoes for tomorrow. The hotel recommended that I try Cameo (which has moved and is at 10 w. Mifflin St phone 608-284-1956). They were able to get me in for their last appointment, beginning at 8:15 pm. I am so thrilled that they could. I have a new home away from home spa! I lucked out and had Marina as my technician. Despite it being the end of the day, Marina did not rush me. I had a chance to chill in the quiet room before- great chaise lounges, crackling simulated fire going in the fireplace and relaxing music. Once it was my turn, the good things kept coming! They offer new massage chairs, and Aveda products. My feet are dancing with joy. I had an outstanding paraffin pedicure- my toes have not looked better in a long time. To top it off, I received coupons for my next visit- 10% off. It was well worth the price (45$, but I think I got a special deal) and much less than I would have paid at home. I am now working my schedule to make sure I have time to visit when I am back in town in a couple of weeks. THANKS CAMEO and Marina especially! It was outstanding! read more

I haven't been overly impressed with Cameo. Overall, I would describe the place as fine, hence the 3 stars. The pros: -they offer a variety of price ranges for haircuts -the facility is nice, especially if you are getting a spa service -free bang trims if you are a regular customer -no hard sell on products -massages were usually average or above The cons: -haircuts are more like average or below, whether I pay $35 or $65 -service is a little pretentious -closed on Sunday read more

I think Kristen C. has nailed it with her comment about focusing too much on the spa atmosphere instead of spa RESULTS. Honestly, I'm rarely in the mood for their "relaxation room," and yeah, that fake fireplace is obnoxious. I've been there twice, both times for pedicures--the first time was probably about two years ago, but they were surprised that I wasn't in their system when I stopped by on a whim this past Thursday (I suspect they had my name entered wrong--it happens a lot). Anyway, I was happy to find that they could fit me in on short notice, although they told me 10:15 and it was closer to 10:30 when we actually got started. (It probably helped that it was mid-morning on a Thursday and that entire side of the Square is now under heavy construction.) Lorelli did my pedi this time and it was a serviceable job, but it was definitely overpriced at $45 for a VERY no frills procedure, although Lorelli was nice. Their pedi chairs are not as good as ones I've had elsewhere, and there's very little calf or foot massage included. They have, at least, significantly improved their polish color selection since I was there two years ago, when they seemed astonished that anyone might WANT orange toenails. They have a decent orange-red-pink-purple selection now, and a very few blues and greens. (The receptionist seemed pretty excited about their new OPI collection, which did have fun bright colors although I could do without the East Asian fetishizing polish color names--I'm not blaming Cameo for that.) One thing that they mentioned when I was leaving is that they'll do "free" polish changes in between pedicures if you schedule another one in advance. I'm sure a tip is expected for this service, but it's still nice to know that I could switch the colors every week or two in between monthly pedis. I might go back again for that, and the convenient location. Another note: they will give cash back on credit cards, so you don't need to make sure you have tipping cash before you go (unless you're getting a "free" polish change, I guess). read more

Clean environment. Inconsistent pricing and oddly difficult in following thru with the reward aspect of their referral rewards system. Stylist Kalli always leaves something to be desired, not much ever really changed before and after I left her chair. Standoffish front desk workers give off an unwelcoming vibe from the get-go. If you want to leave the salon looking the same way you enter, this is for you. read more

The new Alan Koa is fantastic, decorated beautifully and instantly makes me feel calmer and more relaxed when I walk in. They offer you tea or cucumber water while you are waiting. Thomas cuts and colors my hair, and its a treat each time I go. He does such a professional job, I trust him 100% with my hair. Parking used to be difficult at Cameo, but now you can park on the 5th level of the Dayton St Parking Ramp, and the door leads straight into the salon! It's great! read more

I am one of the many stranded thanks to Hurricane Sandy. After a week of waiting for a flight out, I realized I better go get my hair one because even if we get a flight out, it will be days before we have electricity back home. After attempting another Madison salon and deciding they weren't going to do, I made an appointment at Alan Koa with Ashley. Right away I could tell Ashley understood my frizz prone dry hair. She put a Kerastase treatment in it, blew it dry and used the hot iron where necessary (my hair kinks near the scalp, especially in the back). My hair looked AMAZING when she was done!! I left super happy and would highly recommend the salon, and Ashley, to anyone! If I can post pic, I will. Haven't figured out how yet. read more

After my sister informed me that I HAD to get my roots done, being on vacation I had no idea where to go I just knew I wanted to be downtown. I called Alan Koa and to my surprise they got me in on the same day due to a cancelation, score! I needed a root touch up for my blond hair. I got an appointment with Jody. I was quoted $75 on the phone which is on the higher end but was told she was a level 5 stylist. She was very sweet. I got exactly what I wanted and the head massage while getting my hair washed was a huge 5 stars! The place is really beautiful too with the natural light from the windows. I was surprised when I went to check out that my total was $90.00. I have never paid this much for a root touch up and it is not like I had a lot of out growth since I just had my hair done 4 weeks ago but I will give it 4 stars because she did my color great but be prepared to spend $$$$$ read more

Overall the services were very overpriced for their quality. The services were about twice as expensive as I would've paid. The waxing employee was very upbeat and professional. My massage was okay, but overpriced. The makeup experience was disappointing. My pedicure and manicure felt rushed. On Saturday afternoon it was clear most employees were ready to leave for the day, as they closed at 4; few employees were focused on customer service. I was also there Friday, and didn't pick up on a stressful atmosphere that day during my waxing and massage. The hosts were friendly. However, the mood of some employees was off somehow, even though they were friendly to me they seemed bored and casual about their work tasks. For example, my makeup session started 20 minutes late, and the artists fingers smelled like onions. I also waited a long time for my pedicure and manicure and thought they had forgotten me. Makeup: I wondered how many other people had the same eyeliner and brushes used on them. I was expecting my own mirror and space for the makeup application, rather than being near the front desk of the spa crowded to other makeup customers. My eyeliner was applied crookedly and the artist was a bit rough with the brushes around my eyes. The lesson I paid for was a waste of money. I could've done a better job. However, the woman near me looked like her makeup and lashes were on par, and it was her wedding day. Nails: the artist was kind, friendly, and professional, but she was rushed. My feet are still rough after my pedicure, there was dirt under my nails after my manicure. read more

Had a great first time experience at Alan Koa today! Was greeted and given water when I walked into the building and promptly met by my nail technician. Cameo Spa was my go to choice when I was in school at UW. It was a huge treat after final exams to book a decadent nail service or even a massage...I loved the Aveda spa and use it to this day as how I compare all other spa experiences. The services are what set Cameo apart. With luxurious pedicures, massages and more you are coming here for the experience. I came to Madison to celebrate a bridal shower with a group of friends and we were able to bring our own snacks and champagne and setup in their cozy waiting area. Comfortable seating, soothing music and a faux fireplace set the scene. It was a bit awkward sharing the area with other clients coming in but I'm not sure what an alternative would be. I LOVED my reflexology service. Lying on a massage table and having someone concentrate solely on your feet is heaven. I would certainly go back for this service alone. Why not 5 stars? The front desk staff seemed disorganized. When people checked in and checked out they had long lines and one of the girls in the group was kept waiting at the front for a good 15 minutes when she could have been in the waiting area with our group of friends. I don't think this would keep me from going back here but it is definitely something to be aware of when you're visiting...just plan a little extra time on both ends. read more

Go to Rebecca for a facial NOW! I honestly got the most amazing facial of my life at this spa. The atmosphere is relaxing and very clean, and they use Dermalogica (which I purchased and my skin has never felt better). I have been to Cameo in the past for haircuts and spa services. I no longer go there. I agree with some of the other reviews that the front desk seems disorganized and the "quiet room" is actually extremely awkward. The main reason I no longer go there, however, is because they flat-out lied to me. I had been seeing a great hairstylist for about 2 years. One day, I called to book an appointment with her, and they told me she had moved back to Arizona where she was from. I was disappointed, but set up another appointment with a random stylist. About a week later, I was waiting tables and ran into her- turns out she had left, along with a large number of other employees, due to problems with the Cameo management. I cancelled my appointment at Cameo the next day. While I understand a business not wanting to pass along employee information that might make them lose a client, I do not understand why a business would make up some arbitrary lie. Madison is a small city and I was bound to see her out and about at some point and thus realize they had lied. I feel as though there are other ways to handle situations like that. I was very irritated that they went out of their way to make up some story when all they needed to tell me was that she was no longer working there. Had they done that, I probably would have rescheduled anyway. Now, I have moved on. read more

I had such a great experience with Tohira that I had to write a review. This was my first time at Alan Koa and she NAILED IT. This rating is for Melanie (Mel, from Chicago, also new to Madison) I met her at a different salon in Madison. I followed her to Alan Koa Salon. I just moved to Madison from San Diego California. My only other review on Yelp is for the awesome man (Jason, I miss you) who cut my hair by the beach. San Diego is HUGE, there is style, class, expensive, swanky salons unlike anything I've seen in Wisconsin there. (I didn't go to them, I went to a hidden gem in Ocean Beach.) So coming back to Wisconsin after being spoiled rotten, I didn't know if I could connect with someone again. I even swore off salons and women hair dressers in my previous review. Mel changed that tune. I connected with her instantly. She is THE. MOST. FUN. HUMAN. and she is amazing at cutting, coloring and bathing you in love. Not only does she help you find, affirm and guide you to the look you hope for, she nails what actually works for your hair and face. The biggest bonus is, she has THE BEST way of describing and seeing the world. Mel is brightly hilarious, her adjectives are THICK with 80's and 90's pop culture references. She connects with you on a level of style, nostalgia, current events and everything FABULOUS. You leave her chair looking amazing and feeling warm, loved and cared for. I feel like Six from Blossom (90's reference), Six's energy is embodied in Mel, which is a dream come true, who didn't want a bff like Six?! I finally found mine! In addition to Mel's energy, her style and essence is chic as can be! This lady is going places, she is a boss and kills it at work! If you are in the market for a beautiful soul to help you beautify yourself, lift your spirits, reminisce, look forward to new days, and exchange stories about life, Mel is your style gal pal extraordinaire.
