An absolutely beautiful winery tucked into the hills of Almaden, somewhere you wouldn't expect to find a vineyard. The outdoor tasting area is surrounded by vines and has a lovely view of the Almaden Reservoir. We came in on a Sunday afternoon and enjoyed a tasting and the picnic we brought. The tasting consisted of 4 wines, though you could pay $5 more and taste the port as well. The pours weren't stingy and did give you enough to really enjoy each wine. More knowledge was shared about the bottles than the actual wines themselves, but we did have a menu we could follow along with. We tasted 2 whites, a rosé, and one red while we were there. I noticed all the syrah grapes while walking into the property, so I did ask for a taste of that since they had it open and was given a small splash. I enjoyed most of the wines we had, but thought they were a little pricey for whites/rosé. They're reservation only and you do have to prepay when making the reservation. Though tastings are $25, with tax and the already included tip, our tasting for 3 came out to $100. It seemed like there was a $5/pp included gratuity, which I thought was odd having to pay for in advance. One tasting is waived with a 3 bottle purchase. I loved the atmosphere and service. Very attentive. And not pushy. The staff and owners are knowledgeable and make your experience one you won't forget. We've visited Alamitos Vineyards several times. We loved the wines, the view and the staff so much, I decided to host my wife's 60th birthday party for 58 people there. It could not have been any more perfect. The owners, Shaun & Chris, and their team led by Abby were so amazing and flexible to work with. They partner with an incredible chef, Matt, who made us an incredible plated dinner. Chef Matt gave us so many options for appetizers (loved the truffle grilled cheese sandwiches, mushrooms Rockefeller and ahi bites) , salads, entrees (we were able to offer our guests their choice of ribeye steak, salmon, or chicken...each with their own amazing sauce) and desserts to choose from. Once we finalized our menu, Shaun & Chris personally paired four of their exceptional wines to go with our meal. The teams all worked together to coordinate any rentals we needed, servers and wine pouring staff. Every detail was covered and they checked in with me several times throughout the night to make sure everything was perfect and if they could do anything. And...I didn't even mention the view from the winery....very secluded and absolutely stunning!!! They also coordinated with our DJ to make sure all of his needs were ready when he got there to set up and this allowed us to dance the night away on their beautiful lawn area. When you arrive you find that it is a small winery located on a steep hillside overlooking the reservoir. It is a very down to earth place and not pretentious at all. Amazing Vineyard with Excellent Service! Stumbled on to this place and it was a dream come true. The reserve flight was Excellent! The Barn Owl blend was very good but the Eagle Cab was absolutely amazing in taste and smell and the Ruby Port was absolutely the best Port I've ever had. The Port was sweet without being over powering and smooth. The Eagle Cab was smooth without being too soft and had a great smell to. The service was also excellent! Our server was very knowledgeable and very attentive and welcoming. The estate itself was also beautiful with Mt. Umunhum in view and the Radar tower of what used to be Almaden AFB also visible. My friend and I were able to grab a same day reservation on a Sunday and we are so happy we did! The view from the vineyard is absolutely gorgeous. I saw pictures on Yelp of the view, but they don't do justice on how breathtaking it actually is. The staff was very friendly and described the key notes of each wine during the pour. The labels of the wine are also painted by members of the family, which I thought was super unique! They don't serve food, however, you can bring food/snacks with you during your stay. So happy we found this place, such a gem with great wine! Will definitely be coming back here more often. read more

A spur-of-the moment idea was to visit this winery on a hot weekend day in August when we were visiting New Almaden, and went past La Forét. I still want to come back to this place, perhaps when we can afford two 30.00 tasting fees. The only way to get a reduced tasting fee (as in, free) is to purchase three bottles of wine. Thirty dollars is a bit high to determine if you are going to like the wine. I respect that they have bills to pay, just like I do. My husband and I thanked the server, then got back in our beloved, dinged up old minivan and returned back home. I might give them a go another time. It does look like a nice place. My husband and I can't justify paying that much for a tasting, even if we might choose to share the wine flight to save costs. I wish them well. I do. I just hoped they were less expensive. Maybe that is what makes me want to return. What I want, and just can't do right now. I don't know. Nice view out there. read more

Went this weekend for wine tasting and it was fantastic! Scenic views of rolling mountains above the brimming reservoir. Unlike other wineries that are absolutely packed to the rafters with humanity and everything is first come first served, at Alamitos they take reservations very seriously in order to preserve the ambience and create an exceedingly peaceful but fun atmosphere. They have amazing service and truly terrific wine. We are already big fans of their Pinot Noir, award winning Sirahs, and their blends, and was pleasantly surprised with their new limited quantity rose. Perfect for Summer. The wine was delicious and well crafted with great nose, taste, complexity and body, I loved their wines! They make a Portuguese varietal, Touriga, that was elegant, velvety with good fruit but not jammy with an aftertaste that pleasantly lingered on the palate, the tannins were gentle with no gum gripping but were balanced adding to the elegant finish and satisfaction of a well made wine. All their wines are well made. The staff is very friendly, pleasant, offering key notes about their wine and wine in general. The owners are also very pleasant, Renaissance men who add to the over all 5 star ambiance of this small winery. We went there during weekend after a hike at the nearby county park to have some nice peaceful time and joy. But we were very disappointed. The wines are overpriced and comparable to the low end bottles that you can buy at Trader Joes or Total wines for under $10. The whole place looked very artificial and lacked harmony with surrounding nature. We were expecting very quiet ambience, but there were constant loud noise of motorcycles racing along Hicks road. It was so loud that we had to stop our conversation frequently and wait for them to pass to continue. To make matters worse, this place is directly under flight path of aircrafts heading to land at SJC. There was continuous flow of flights and prop aircrafts flying at very low altitude over our head making persistent noise that was very annoying and irritating like wasps circling over your head. Overall we wanted to forget the time we spent and the whole experience there. Could have been better. read more

This beautiful, small winery is located on a hillside above San Jose's Amaden Reservoir and on the edge of Almaden Quicksilver County Park. The setting is truly spectacular with peaks of the Santa Cruz mountains towering above the comfortable outside tasting area. It's a great place to do some bird watching while wine tasting. Species of birds that frequent the vineyard are beautifully depicted on the bottle labels. But it's the wine that really stands out here. Current offerings include fruity, balanced Sauvignon Blanc; dry, delicious, Portuguese-style Rose of Touriga Nacional; a complex, flavorful Syrah; and a deep, rich Cabernet Sauvignon. They have also just released a delicious Ruby Port which, in a rarity for California, is made in true Portuguese style using the Touriga Nacional grapes growing right above the tasting area. More varietals are apparetly in the works. Looking forward to seeing how they turn out! After an exceptional wine tasting afternoon at Alamitos, a great way to wrap up your day would be to stop in the tiny, historic settlement of New Almaden on your way out and enjoy a gourmet dinner at the famous La Foret restaurant. read more
