I've been a customer of Alameda Optometric Group for several years now and have only had positive things to say about Dr. Sheppard and her staff. I still feel the same about my eye exam but the help I received selecting a frame left a lot to be desired. I repeatedly mentioned the material and manufacturer I preferred and did get to try on a couple of frames from this manufacturer. However, though I thought I was clear about my taste, I was presented with several other frames that were way out in left field. Previously, this has not been my experience with this office. Also when I got home I realized I hadn't received an itemized receipt nor a copy of my prescription. I called and had them mailed to me but it is a FTC rule that optometrists provide you with your prescription. I hope that this was just a bad day for the person who helped me but in the future I may look elsewhere for frames. read more

This was my first appointment with them and they provided excellent service. Dr. Wong was very thorough and clarified all my questions. The staff was very welcoming and made the entire process easy and fast. I brought my 7-month-old baby with me and I was anxious to bring her since she might fuss and cry but the staff offered to watch her and I was able to focus my full attention on the exams. Paid $175 to have them confirm a stye in my eye and that only a warm compress would work. Really should be much less as it was 5 minutes to confirm. The doctor was rushed and ready to leave before he even sat down! They seem more interested in moving people through than service. Not a place to make a lasting relationship with an eye doctor. Even Lens Crafters didn't make you feel rushed or just a number like these guys. Given I am in the medical field I am particularly sensitive to patient care and this is not a welcoming patient centered place. The glasses selection is minimal. read more

Both Dr. Sheppard and Dr. Nelson care about their craft, clients and care, and all of the office staff have been super nice and helpful over the years. It is important, as with any doctor's office, to check your insurance benefits and how they translate to your appointments and products bought like glasses or contacts, because they might not know until after your service. I really had no particular expectations based on experiences from other eye doctors years ago, experiences that were a bit methodical, and quite honestly perfectly ok. Though my previous set of glasses didn't feel quite right. After moving to Alameda, I needed a new eye exam, and searched Yelp for reviews and wholeheartedly agree with the great ratings this place has received. From start to finish, the place has a warm and welcoming atmosphere from the setting and the people. The examination from the doctor was a perfect mix of personal attentiveness and sharp expertise. Typically I've had a good experience but today I felt like I was inconveniencing a staff member by asking to pick up my glasses. And while I was waiting I overheard a customer express concern about the blinky machine test. She sounded concerned but polite and the immediate response from a staff member was "in 14 years of doing this that has never happen... no one has ever..." etc. The message was "you have no idea what you are talking about so stop talking." I hate to be condescended to when it comes to my health so I felt for the women that was expressing her concern. I don't need a red carpet but respectful interactions are important. Maybe the staff needs a raise and/or a few extra days of PTO to lift the mood?! I'll give them another round of business to see if it is a new trend but if things are like that again I'll need to make a change. read more

From finding out that all babies are eligible for a FREE exam at six months old, to the ease of scheduling and friendliness of the staff and Dr. Sheppard- we'd HIGHLY recommend this practice for patients of ANY age! Although we had seen a great specialist through out health insurance (Kaiser) for what we feared was a wandering eye, we were glad to be so warmly received by Dr. Sheppard and her staff. While the first doctor told us our daughter's eyes were okay, the service we received at Alameda Optometric was far more comfortable and reassuring. Dr. Sheppard took time to explain what she was looking for while she examined our baby's eyes. Our baby didn't even cry as she had done at her previous eye exam. Dr. Sheppard's warm personality and obvious professionalism did far more to put our mind at ease and we feel confident having seen her that all is on track with our little one. I have gone to Dr. Nelson for years and now also see Dr. Shephard. They and their staff are amazing!

Unfortunately I am unable to recommend this group for 3 reasons: (1) They decided to no longer accept Alameda Alliance (part of Obamacare) and dropped my 11 year old son as a patient. When I asked why, they stated "we are a private practice and due to financial reasons we decided to be out of network provider". In other words, profit over patients. I found another "private practice" here in Alameda that takes Alameda Alliance, and my son's pediatrician of 11 years (Alameda Pediatric Associates - another "private practice") has consistently told me that since our son is an existing patient, they will never drop him regardless if he has Alameda Alliance. Alameda Optometric Group admitted to me that they had already stopped taking new patients with Alameda Alliance, and now have decided to drop all their Alameda Alliance patients. (2) For my first appointment as a new patient, I specifically scheduled with Dr. Nelson after researching online for a highly recommended eye doctor in Alameda. However, when I arrived for my first visit, I was told that I will be seeing Dr. Sheppard without any apology or asking if this is ok. I decided not to say anything wanting to give her a chance. I now know that this was a case of "Bait & Switch" due to my 3rd reason below. (3) My last appointment before I left was ironically with Dr. Nelson as I was always scheduled with Dr. Sheppard. I found him to be more thorough and knowledgeable with sound advice. For example, Dr. Nelson admitted to me that he would not have recommended progressives for me at this stage of my prescription, as Dr. Sheppard had done, as he felt it was too soon. I had already tried progressives at Dr. Sheppard's recommendation and they did not work out which mean I had to forfeit the extra cost. Dr. Nelson also found a condition with my eyes that he stated Dr. Sheppard should have caught but did not record in my chart. I did find Dr. Sheppard to be very nice, however, she is not as thorough, calm, focused or experienced/knowledgeable as Dr. Nelson. This is why I initially chose Dr. Nelson, but due to a "bait & switch", ended up with Dr. Sheppard. read more

My eye doctor recently retired so I am very pleased to have discovered AOG. I have Glaucoma and need to have my eyes checked regularly. The doctors are great and they have all the equipment needed for testing in the office. They also have excellent eyewear department. Support staff is excellent and really make sure glasses work for their customers. Everyone is very friendly and they're opened on Saturday. Highly recommend. read more

Like the doctor to which the Julianne Moore character in *The Big Lebowski* refers The Dude, Dr. Nelson is very "thurrah". (That's 'thorough' to those of us who don't typically speak with silly affected accents.) Very, very thurrah. Too damn thurrah if you ask me. For instance: Just what exactly does an optometrist need to take your damn blood pressure for anyway, if I may ask? Just to tell you it's high? See, this is the exact reason that I avoid all manner of doctors like the plague. And, as if that isn't enough, he goes and takes images of my retinas and upon examination proceeds to inform me that contrary to popular belief the eyes are windows not to the soul, but to the heart; that the arteries in the retinas tend to mimic those in the heart and, that being the case, I should maybe consider popping into the ER on my way home. This is exactly the kind of thing that I go way out of my way to not know anything about. In fact, it is for this very reason that I'm seriously considering either a) taking my eyeball bidness elsewhere or b) taking up Christian Science and letting Jeebus deal with it. But I gotta say, Dr. Nelson is very thurrah. Very, very thurrah. At the risk of repeating myself, too damn thurrah. read more

These guys were really nice and friendly. Everyone from, the doc down to the receptionist were amazing. I went for an eye exam and to get my contacts. The last place I went to charged me all most 400$ for the eye exam and contacts, while I got everything done here for 80$. Also the doctor did not even charge me for my eye exam. He did an excellent job of explaining everything he was doing and told me how my eyes were in comparison of other people and etc. Overall it was a great place and I will be back here again. read more

Please note that this review is for the office staff, not for the doctors.. Lack of initiative and unclear correspondence. My first visit was an emergency as I had a swollen eye, not sure what it was. The doctor was great and advised that it was an allergic reaction. The staff on the other hand, unsure if they could accept my insurance advised me that they would bill me if it didn't go through. I offered to pay cash up front but they said not to worry. About a month later, I scheduled an appointment for a regular check up, with the female doctor. I asked the staff specifically if my insurance went through before and they said there was no problem. I called to reschedule my appointment, since I had family unexpectedly visiting, and they said the female doctor would be on vacation so if I wanted her, I had to wait quite some time. So I said, never mind. I will keep my current appointment because I preferred the female doctor. Note: Nothing against the other doctors. It was just a preference since I had already interacted and met with the female doctor. I show up for my appointment and upon checking in, they advised me that the female doctor was on vacation so I was to meet with the other doctor. I asked why they did not advise me of the change prior to my appointment, since I specifically mentioned that I preferred the female doctor... No answer. Then they ask me if I called my insurance since they were not sure if they could accept it. Again, I asked why they did not tell me this over the phone when I asked SPECIFICALLY about my insurance when I tried to reschedule. The response I received was... I could call my insurance "really quick", it will not take that long. Yes, it would be a quick call. But at that point, I was annoyed with the poor communication and customer service. So I left and will never go back. read more

I liked working with Dr. Sheppard, she's kind and knowledgeable. I loved their frame selection and walked out having gotten two pairs. The whole experience was painless. The only caution I have is, try to avoid Tammy if possible. She's nice and all, but perhaps should consider another line of work. She hit me in the nose with a piece of exam equipment, was unusually confused by my very standard insurance, and didn't seem competent with frames. When someone else took over my frame adjustment it went fine. So, yeah. read more

Today was my first visit to AOG and from the minute I stepped foot into the office I felt very welcome and already like I was a long time patient. And he was thoroughly impressed with the health of my eyes, so much so that he said I was a "showoff". :) VERY VERY nice folks with a small town touch that you just can't get in San Francisco which is where I had gone for years to impersonal places like Lenscrafters and Site for Sore Eyes. They were very thorough, explained everything, very friendly and easy to work with. Dr. Sheppard was great, very nice, easy to understand, great personality. You have to park on the street, but it wasn't difficult to find a close spot. They book pretty far out, at least for regular eye exams, so plan ahead to get in when you want. I have been using Dr. Gary Nelson long before he incorporated as a group with Dr. Shelly Sheppard. His tradition of quality eye care has only gotten better with the expansion of the practice. The practice uses state of the art diagnostic tools including retinal photography. The office staff and optical assistants are knowledgeable about all aspects of insurance and coordination of benefits. They are experts in fitting and adjusting glasses. The selection of frames and lenses is great and includes "something for everybody." As a former contact lens wearer I can attest to the doctor's knowledge of and availability of a wide range of lens types.
