10. T Bone Lamb Steak
Ariana J.

My husbands favourite Middle Eastern food in Melbourne area. He's been to this restaurant many times and raved highly about it. We had goat shank: super yummy tender delicious fall of the bone meats, huge chunk of goat leg piece, layered on top of delicious fluffy and tasty flavoured rice. Served with chilled and yummy taziki and garlic sauce that paired deliciously with dish. We also got the chicken shawarma wrap, delicious tender meats, on warm lavash bread, and veggies. The mint yogurt drink is very refreshing. Must visit!! Ambiance is alright. Inside a store. The lamb shank takes quite sometime to arrive as it's made freshly i believe. Service is good.

Fantastic!!! Best middle eastern food we have had in this state. The flavors were so authentic. The flavors that came out of the schwarma were incredible. Best grape leaves ever! The hummus was light & happy! They gave me a side of garlic sauce that made it even more special. The wife had their falafel in a pita. What made this special was they add a coating of sesame seeds to the balls of deliciousness! Fantastic all around. Our new go to place. Thanks all.

Omg I sent my mom on a mission with this place. She ordered like 4-5 different meals. All were fantastic, packed with flavor, authenticity and love. The menu is so extensive but so many good things. Guess we have to keep going back to try more. Small family shop. Good people, they recommended a lot of the meals she ordered. Sorry not sure of the names of everything but you can just show them the pic! Enjoy

**INITIAL REVIEW** I…read moream currently on a Greek/Mediterranean food kick after eating it, which was fantastically made and indulged in, when I was at the Sponge Docks in Tarpon Springs, FL. To my delight, Melbourne Main Street a.k.a. Historic Downtown Melbourne finally had such food added to its food scene when Aya Mediterranean Cuisine (which I will shorthand simply to Aya for the remainder of this review) opened up. Eventually, I got to try Aya out albeit their lunch menu initially. What I got was a fantastic meal in which I long to try more of their fare. Aya is located on the northern side of New Haven Blvd. in Historic Downtown Melbourne. It is the last business on the west side of the train tracks, which used to be Continental Flambe if anyone remembers that. I went in at the latter end of Aya's lunch hours as they close around 2 p.m. to prepare for the dinner rush. The decor looks more like a rustic upscale tavern flanked by fine dining decor, both from the 1980s. Aya was clean with the space optimized to fit the most patrons during a rush, but the restaurant does need some TLC. Almost all the ceiling's tiles had water damage and the carpet was frayed. Not sure if this is something Aya can fix or if the landlord of the building is blocking them from doing renovations, but it is noticeable. To keep things simple, I ordered the Gyro Wrap ($13.99), which was seasoned beef and lamb with feta cheese, onions, lettuce, tomatoes and tzatziki sauce. Side options can be more traditional sit-down with rice or a salad (I assume it is a feta salad), but more of the "fast food" route with fries. I like how they deconstructed the wrap with the slices of beef and lamb, veggies, and sauce being separate, but assembled with pita cut into corners/chips. Yet, all the lamb and beef are on top of one small pita so you can add the veggies and sauce. And if you ordered fries, you can add them in too for the "food truck" experience. Not sure if Aya will allow you to use ketchup on a gyro wrap though. On a sidenote, there was a back "bar" area where alcoholic beverages are sold, and the restrooms - at least the men's restroom - was clean. Ultimately, Aya blends class with a family-feeling when eating at their restaurant. They even give more specification to their food as the generalization may be Greek/Mediterranean, but they have specialization in Lebanese and Moroccan cuisine, something I am sure the family whom owns it, spearheaded by the owner and chef Ziad Aseid, envisioned when they opened this restaurant. Despite the visual issues I found with the restaurant itself, Aya is a solid four-out-of-five stars for their initial review. If they are consistent with their food and service, I will give them their fifth star for consistency in an updated review.

We ordered the large mixed kebab platter and it came with salad, hummus, Baba ghanoush, garlic paste, warm pitas and olives. Terrific appetizer and a fantastic kebab platter that the 2 of us could not finish - truly enough food for 4! We took all our leftovers home and enjoyed them the next day. We also had some excellent baklava (with pistachio our favorite) and took one home. And then they gave us some tasty rice pudding too! We were beyond stuffed! We are definitely going again even if it is 50 minutes from home. Lastly, the price was very reasonable and the service was excellent. A+ experience! Highly recommended if you're looking for something different and special. Update: went for second time and it was less impressive than the first. We ordered the same platter and the Kibbeh appetizer. The Kibbeh was dry and not very flavorful unfortunately. Also the platter was not served in the same impressive way, smaller portion, and less WOW. We may give it a third try but this moved from 5 Stars to 4 on the second outing. Hope the 3rd visit is better or it may be our last as it's 50 minutes from our home.

We each got a glass of wine, and Toni basically gave us a whole tasting of Lebanese wines. She is extremely knowledgeable about wine in general. The food was next level. I have never had middle eastern food but this was a great introduction. The only minus is that this place is NOT kid friendly, and you absolutely must call ahead and get a reservation. Chef Toni was actively turning people away who did not have a reservation because she simply cannot fit more guests into her restaurant. There are no kids menus, and I don't even think there are high chairs. Toni did try to accommodate as best as she could- she made our entrees shareable for our toddler and she made sure he had extra pita bread! I paid over $18 for a Shish Kafta sandwich that was basically all bread and garnish. I'm not exaggerating--there was barely a morsel of meat in every bite. It felt like a total rip-off!!! As someone who has worked in Middle Eastern kitchens for years, this was a massive letdown. Red flags from the start: the waitress claimed Shish Taouk (tawook) is the "fastest" item (proper chicken takes time!), and the cook wasn't even middle eastern and clearly had no idea what he was doing. The Tabbouli arrived dry and unseasoned, no lemon juice or even wedges??? I ordered the Shish Kafta ($18+), and it was an embarrassment. There was so little meat it was practically a salad wrap. When you pay nearly $20 for a sandwich, you expect a proper protein portion, not a "hint" of Kafta. No lemon, no napkins, no utensils, no attention to detail. This place relies on the name of the food without understanding the food combining principles of the recipe. Check your bag before you leave, or better yet, go elsewhere. The only thing that seemed authentic about this place is that the owner is arabic.

With multiple dining options at this shopping plaza, that is to be expected. Fortunately, a few cars pulled out as I was pulling in, so I got lucky. Walking in, the place is definitely a no-frills type restaurant. There is nothing wrong with that. There is nothing fancy about a gyro. I ordered at the counter and as I was paying with my credit card, the woman pointedly told me that there was a tipping option. Also, be advised that they do charge three and a half percent more if you use a credit card. I went with a special gyro combination, which consisted of a gyro, a side (I went with French fries), and a drink. It was about fifteen dollars after tax. A bit steep, but it is what it is. My food came out in a somewhat slower pace, but it was the height of lunch hour. The gyro was not as filled as I would have liked (especially at fifteen dollars). The French fries were your standard frozen fries bought out of a restaurant supply store. My meal was okay, but nothing overly remarkable. I am torn between giving Gyros & More II either three stars or four stars. It wasn't bad, but it was a bit expensive and I would have liked to have had a bit more meat in the gyro. But still, it was a decent enough lunch. It was also obvious that Gyros & More II was popular. It was pretty crowded when I was there. I guess ultimately I will up it to four stars (though I wish I could give it a three and a half star rating). Oh well, four stars it shall be. If you are in the area and craving a gyro, Gyros & More II offers a decent enough gyro for a bit higher than I think that you should pay, but everything has gone up in price. Four stars it is for Gyros & More II.

We both chose a combo platter and he recommended the salad and a delicious eggplant moussaka (Lebanese style, not Greek).
