Niki and Angelo have served me fresh, homemade Greek food that transported me back to Chora, Santorini, Chania, Vamos, etc. LOVE their Tadziki, Felafel, and Gyro. What sounds good? Ribs, hearty soup, spinach pie, gyros, homemade desserts ... or potatoes made from powder? (Ha! That one's for you Meg.) Except for the instant potatoes, you need go no further than the Akropolis, 3311 South Street, to satisfy your hunger. Owners George Xioufarides and his wife Maria Xioufaridou have been serving up authentic Greek cuisine in Lafayette since 1985. George says "There are still people out there that appreciate fresh cooked food. We are proud because we see a lot of repeat customers coming back-- maybe even the third generation that says their father or grandfather brought them here. We are not a fancy place-- it's not big." But trust the Out to Lunch gang, it is good! We ask George for a bit of history while waiting for our food. Bev is curious how the family, originally from Cypress, ended up in Lafayette. George explains, "We came here on April 16th of 1977, the day before our visas expired. We came originally to Chicago, then here for the restaurant business. When we started it was at the Parthenon in West Lafayette with Maria's brother Jack." Jo quizzes George about his favorite dish. "This is a problem we have every day," he laughs, "but the best-selling item is the gyro," a sandwich on pita bread with roasted meat, tomato, onion and tzatziki (a cucumber, yogurt, garlic sauce). "We make everything here; we don't buy heat-and-serve food." George describes the steps that go into preparing the large vertical cylinder of meat that slowly cooks in front of an open electric broiler. "We have a big grinder, mix in beef, lamb, salt, pepper and spices, and build it up in special bases. Making the meat this way keeps the juices in." No wonder this is a customer favorite. Bev chooses the combination dinner which includes a gyro; moussaka made with eggplant; pastitsio, a lasagna like dish with ground beef; cheese pie baked in thin phyllo dough; dolmades, a rice and ground beef stuffed grape leaf treat, in an avgolemono sauce. "Everything is excellent, I appreciate it even more knowing that they're made right here, real comfort food." A great deal at $15.95 and enough food for two or more! Today is Kay's first time to the Akropolis and she orders the swordfish kebob for $13.95. "I never order swordfish because it's usually dry as a plank, but this is delicious," she says. "I taste dill and lemon and olive oil and it's moist and wonderful. And it's served with the best rice I've ever had." (underlined for emphasis because Kay says this multiple times during lunch). "Lots of lemon and spinach in it, thanks all, it was a real treat!" In an email the next day Kay shared that her husband, Dick, is dying to go try it now. Jo orders the mbriame for $9.84, simply described on the menu as a vegetable stew. "It looks very different than I expected. It was listed as a stew but it was very ordered and stacked. No doubt that the eggplant, potatoes and zucchini are fresh, not frozen and reheated. Nice texture and flavor. No tough skin on the eggplant. It's just good!" Margy's empty plate once held a spinach pie, $3.74, and an order of hummus with pita, $4.05. Bev asks, "Margy, can you tell me about your food?" Margy, "Ahhh, it's gone! ... but seriously, the spinach/feta pie (spanakopita) is my first choice and so flaky. The pita is great, heated on the grill and wonderful to drag through all sorts of dips and sauces." The menu at the Akropolis is substantial considering the size of the restaurant. Kay has many seafood items to choose from including a salmon fillet special, octopus, scrod and cod. There are vegetarian choices too, with rice, hummus, falafel and vegetable options. For the less adventurous, there are made-on-the-premises burgers and really great fries, onion rings and green salads. It is also rumored you will find the BEST barbequed ribs in town. Beer and wine are available. Did we mention desserts?! Save room or better yet, go sometime for a special treat. Already full, we conservatively decide on one order of baklava to share among us when Maria arrives with a tray containing one of every dessert on the menu! Dipla, a beautiful roll of layered flaky crust covered in honey and nuts; a piece of baklava and one of coconut cake, both served warm and oh so buttery; AND custard pie. The custard has a hint of rosewater in it which increases in flavor as the dessert cools. Count 'em, four desserts! We dining divas take our volunteer jobs seriously. Before rolling out to our cars we all agree to Greek coffee after Maria describes, "It's strong and when you get up, you have some and you're running all day! It's a different bean, very finely ground, roasted more; and sits at the bottom of your cup. Don't drink the grounds." As we prepare to leave George and Maria's son Chris comes in for his seasonal favorite, Yia Yia Soup (Yia Yia -- Greek for Grandma). It sounds wonderful; a vegetable, lemon, egg, rice and broth soup. The Akropolis and it's' sister restaurant, the Parthenon in West Lafayette, served top quality food. The family originated in Cyprus, and moved here from Chicago some 40 years ago for a better quality of life, and a better education for their children. Everything was handmade, and at the Parthenon still is. The yogurt was hand made, and the gyros meat was constructed in the store. The few premade products, i.e., the pita bread and onion rings are excellent quality. You really could not buy higher quality Greek food than what was produced in these two restaurants. It was superior or at least equivalent to anything in Chicago or NYC, and I have been told that the same is true for the food in Greece. The couple who owned the Akropolis wanted to retire, had no family to pass their restaurant on to, and sold it to a married couple who were friends. The quality has deteriorated dramatically. The new owners buy their gyros meat premade, and I found it inedible. Greasy, fatty, and poor quality. Disgusting. Their yoghurt sauce is watery and flavorless, and again is purchased premade. I was appalled to read the reviews that praised the food at this restaurant. Their original clientele have abandoned the Akropolis, and take refuge at the Parthenon. (The exodus puzzled the new owners.) Sorry, but when you have had the best available for years, no one with taste or knowledge will settle for third or fourth best. Those who praise this restaurant simply don't know any better. Take the trouble to drive a little further to West Lafayette, and enjoy this food as it was originally made. The original owner of the Parthenon has retired, and his son and wife now run it. They do everything old school, just like their elders. Extremely nice people, and for old timers there are some nostalgic photos of the old days on the walls. They have an extensive menu, and everything is excellent. My only criticisms are of the baklava and spinach pie; they don't use butter, which is essential to the quality of these dishes. You can easily make something far superior at home. Even so, we will still sometimes indulge in the baklava, which is otherwise very good. The spinach pie filling is a little too thin and bland for my taste. read more

I use to love this place and have been going here for years but the last couple of times I went there to eat was horrible. The lemon soup tasted like it had been sitting around for a month and the gyro meat was room temp at best. I've worked resturaunts enough to know that you have to keep your meat up to temp to avoid it going bad (food poisoning, etc). I don't think they could pass a health inspection any time soon. We had some time to kill while we were in town, so we stopped here for lunch. It is quite obvious that this is a favorite spot for local diners. It seems that the owners don't know many strangers walking through their door. Of course, we had never been there, so we weren't sure what the protocol was, but we figured it out rather quickly - so no loss there. My husband ordered a gyro basket and I ordered a souvlaki basket. We placed our order and took a seat. Our food was delivered promptly, and the staff was friendly. The food was pretty average as far as Greek fair goes. The most remarkable thing was the tzatziki. It was extremely different from the tzatziki I have had at other Greek restaurants. It was milder and runnier than any tzatziki I had ever eaten. It wasn't BAD, it was just very different. I would be interested to try one of their dinners some time. read more

Have never been to Greece, but did enjoy the combination plate immensely! Pastitsio was wonderful, and the skanikopita (spinach-feta pie) was excellent. I thought the gyro meat (lamb) was moist and tender. Baklava was very sweet so you could get a sugar high from just smelling it! Prices were moderate and portions were large. The people were very friendly and spoke Greek to one of our companions (who once lived in Athens) which was amusing to the rest of us!! Very friendly to children. read more

My family has been eating at the Akropolis regularly for more than 25 years. The food is always great and it is quite affordable. Everything I've ever had there has been good. I love Maria's lentil soup--it's just the thing if you are feeling under the weather. You can't go wrong with a gyro, but the dinner options are all quite good also. The service is quick and the owners are friendly. We often see other regulars there--a testament to the quality of food that keeps people coming back again and again! read more

I can't believe I've been missing this great place all these years! Tried Akropolis this evening. Fantastic! To get a good idea of what they have to offer, we tried their combination plate.--dolmades (stuffed grape leaves,) moussaka, pastitsio, cheese pie and gyros. Oh, and it comes with rice and soup or salad. The lemon rice soup and the lentil soup are wonderful. All of the entrees were delicious and authentic. All the food is prepared in site. The owner even makes her own Greek yogurt for the gyro sauce. The combo dinner is huge, so plan for leftovers. And save room for the baklava. It is scrumptious--not sicky-sweet like the mass-produced baklava. The owners are right there, preparing and serving, which is a nice touch. Greek music in the background, warm, comfortable environment, a carafe of wine and delicious, authentic Mediterranean food. Perfect! We WILL be back. I've eaten here several times. It's owned by a very nice local couple. I've never had bad food here. They always let us take a bottle of the sauce to our table. Never seems to be too busy so you should be able to find a seat rather easy even though it's small. Only complaint would be the portion size of the side of fries, that's all! read more

My first visit under new ownership. I ordered Chicken Souvlaki pita sandwich with fries and iced tea. Other than the tea having too much of a lemon taste, I enjoyed it all. I had heard stories that the portions were small, but they have apparently corrected that. The interior is brighter as well. I intend to go back and try something different next time. We went on a Saturday night and the place was nearly empty, which is too bad. Lafayette, check this place out! read more

My family has gone to the akropolis for years and loved it. We seldom stray from the gyros and fries, our favorite. With new owners come change, but not for the better in my opinion. Gyros meat seems more processed and bland. Sauce seemed to be a sour cream base without much other flavoring. Very disappointed. read more

First time I went here and Got the gyro with fries special for $8.99 with my buddies. Literally got 7 fries on top of the gyro. I don't think it is worth the price. I'm going to continue going to Captain Gyros. read more

The food is incredible. This is one of our favorite places for date night or even a family dinner. All the classic Greek dishes done right. The only reason I didn't give 5 is the entrance which reminds me of entering the school cafeteria. Would love to see them remodel to make it less congested and more inviting. read more

The restaurant is transitioning to new owners, but the old owners are providing on-site training. This is more of a fast food Greek restaurant. Definitely not fine dining. That being said, there is plenty of seating and the counter service is fast. We had the Athena Salad (gyro meat added), spinach pie and some pita bread. The food quality was very good. The gyro sauce seems like it is just plain yogurt with no flavoring. We will return. read more

Shocked to see this so highly rated. The food is awful. I literally took one bite of my meal and gagged. My boyfriend was with me, and he got sick after eating here. I considered it a 5 star food experience with the previous owners. I have gone their maybe once a month for years. Today was my first experience with the new owners. Staff was friendly. The place was clean with mostly same menu. Looked like some new specials were posted. I ordered the usual. Gyro with fries. I was so disappointed I won't return. The gyro meat looked and tasted different. It was a lighter shade in appearance. The cucumber sauce did not at all resemble what I was used to. Frankly, it was nasty. I could not eat more than 3-4 bites. The fries were ok, but thinner and less tasty. I thought I read in the J & C that things weren't going to change, but it looks as if inferior ingredients are being used. I could be wrong and it is just a matter of taste. Disappointed, but hope they bring back old quality and taste. read more
