Please don't believe the reviews you see on yelp. Do your research on OB's. Dr. Akerman is a nice and funny. But honestly he's all about business. Every time i had my check up he was always running around trying to get patients out. He didn't really care. I went through depression and i told him and he's like well that's life. He's not a woman and doesn't know what it feels like to go through pregnancy. Yeah he's a dr but physically he's never been a woman and doesn't know what pregnancy is like. It honestly just seemed like he didn't care or maybe he takes too many patients and he can't handle it. I ended up having a "emergency c-section" and if you do your research he's always doing c-sections when you don't need too. I personally think it's bc of business and of course the insurance money. I wouldn't recommend this dr. The staff is nice and debbie is incredible!!! read more

Dr Akerman and his office team have made each of our pregnancies a great experience. My wife and I feel very lucky to have selected him three times to help us through the journey of adding a child to our family. His bedside manner is excellent and he is very knowledgeable and trustworthy. When you ask him a question, he just puts you at ease with his expertise and previous experience in the field. Warning with Doc, he is really funny and will make you laugh, so be prepared. Lastly, after each delivery he will always tell us, "see you guys next year for the another baby" and he continues to be right. I highly recommend Dr. Akerman. He has delivered all 3 of my children with the 2nd set being twins. We had identical twin boys and had complications and developed twin to twin transfusion syndrome . He was with us each step of the way and I fully trust him. Wouldn't let anyone else deliver my babies besides him! He's exceptionally knowledgeable and a great physician. He delivered my 1st and I started to hemorrhage after (which he thankfully stopped) and he handled it all with such ease and grace I wouldn't trust anyone else with my mine or my babies lives! read more

Ughhh.. their billing service is atrocious!! i Saw Dr. A in the very first month of my pregnancy for a confirmation check only, it took them 6 months to charge my credit card, even though i mailed in my credit card information with the invoice, and here i am about to deliver 9 months later, AND THEY ARE STILL CALLING ME TO PAY!! NEVER pay with a credit card, you will NEVER be able to prove you actually paid. and they will never stop calling your phone and sending you invoices.. read more

Dr Akerman saved my life. I went in with abdominal pain thinking cramps and within a week he had me in front of an oncologist. He was kind and thorough and if I could clone the man and send him to friends struggling with their doctors in other parts of this country I absolutely would. I've seen Dr. Akerman before for a yearly Pap I loved him, he was kind and answered all my questions, he seemed a little like he was in a rush but he was still very attentive. Just recently I found out I was expecting and made my prenatal appointment. Dr Akerman and Debbie are amazing! This is my first pregnancy and they have been with me every step of the way, answering all of my questions and spending extra time with me if needed. I would stay away from this office. Although the doctors are great here, their front office staff is THE worst you'll ever encounter. They don't care about your well being, extremely lazy and messy. They lost my paperwork and then turned around and yelled at me saying they already gave it back to me. They actually yelled at me. And nope they never gave it to me. They just lost the 2 copies I gave them. Then onto today. I had to go to the ER yesterday because I had heavy bleeding. I thought I lost my baby but by a miracle she's still okay but I'm still lightly bleeding right now. The ER doctor told me to see my OBGyn ASAP since they couldn't determine the reason. I called into let them know and all I got was the most unsympathetic person telling me they're busy. No "omg how's your baby" or "are you okay?" Like any normal human being. She didn't care but I guess at least she finally scheduled me for end of day tomorrow. Again no "hope you feel better" and just hung up. She didn't even bother to check with the doctor to see maybe since this is an emergency he'll be willing to see me earlier. The receptionist here make all the calls for the doctors!!! So basically I was fed up and called another OBGyn to transfer but they need my medical records, so I called this office back to request for it and they said it'll take them 7-10 business days and they were gonna close out my account and cancel my appts. I'm BLEEDING and that's all they can do for me. I could literally be having a miscarriage right now but do those girls in the front office care? No they don't. They care about their $25 record fees and who cares if I lose my baby, it's none of their business. Even after I paid the $25 fee they sent me the WRONG form then went off to lunch. I'm literally sitting here in tears because I'm so scared and frustrated I'm gonna lose my baby and my doctors office, who I'm supposed to be able to depend on is leaving me to deal with this by myself, even making it worse. VIcki truly was the best person we could have ever asked for to support us. She was kind, comforting, and made my wife feel very safe throughout this entire journey. Best OBGYN for sure. I went to Dr Akerman and his team for the whole care of my third pregnancy, and I would definitely recommend them! They always responded to all my concerns and questions - if I forgot to ask something during the visit, I would ask them in their patient portal and would always get an answer within the day. I was referred to Dr. Akerman by my former Gyno He had retired and was referring his patients to Dr. Akerman I knew that I would be in good hands. My daughter in law had already been to Dr. Akerman as well I was pretty pleased by him back then. Fast forward it was now time to have my yearly visit at the time I called to make an appointment Dr. Akerman wasn't available, but I was given a choice to see another one of his associates. I made my appt. The young ladies at the front were very polite and welcoming. The office was clean as I usually know what to look for considering I myself have been in the medical field for the past 30 years. I look for cleanliness, knowledge and friendliness. At any rate I was seen by Vicki a mid wife that is part of the staff. She was very thorough and gave me so much information and had great bed side manners. I left very satisfied with the whole staff. Don't believe all the reviews you see. This man has the worst bedside manners unless you have a baby in your belly. I recently moved to the OC so i haven't been able to find the time to look into medical care. I came in to change my birth control from an IUD to something different/new IUD since my body began to give signals that it was time to change. I literally saw people not even check in with the front desk and walk into the office. I thought that i messed up when i checked in with the front desk, but nope, i still had to wait in the lobby as people made a direct path to the exam rooms right after checking in. After i got into a room, i waited an hour as i heard the doctor and nurses go into the rooms around me and take care of multiple women. I understand that there may be other issues that are higher priority than mine, but not even a check in or a peek from the nurse? I could've left for food, came back after an hour and still be waiting. When Dr. Akerman came into the exam room, the first thing he asked me was if i was planning to get pregnant, i said "no". He said "you would look better pregnant" and laughed. I can understand trying to make a joke to lighten the atmosphere but I literally have nothing but a paper blanket hiding my lower half so his statement made me feel uncomfortable. He brushed aside my previous history and issues leading up to removing my IUD, bashing my previous OBGYN for inexperience (even though she has delivered all of my nieces/nephews and given all the women in my family the best care). After everything was said and done, he literally told me to come back pregnant and left. No follow up on birth control options or even sympathy for the pain i was experiencing after my IUD was removed. I'd rather go to a Planned Parenthood for my care than come back to this office, at least i know that the doctor would be respectful even if i choose to not have kids at the moment. read more

Don't expect to see Dr. Akerman or Dr. Lao if you're not considered a high risk pregnancy or one of his planned c-section patients. I'm 30 weeks pregnant and NEVER met one of the Drs even during my initial consultation. Rachel, the midwife, is nice and takes her time until your case becomes complicated. Then she'll start to give vague answers and rushes through your appt, literally inching towards the door to get out while you're asking questions. On top of that the front desk workers are rude when you call and unhelpful. I switched to a different practice after realizing I was getting ignored here and never being able to meet one of the Drs. What's the point of being the patient of a top OBGYN if you never get to meet him. Will definitely not be coming back here or recommending this practice to anyone read more

Vicki is an incredible midwife with Dr. Akerman's practice. I first met her in February 2020 and she delivered my baby at St. Joseph's hospital in October 2020. She encouraged me throughout my pregnancy and gave excellent advice and resources to support my desire to have an unmedicated birth using hypnobirthing techniques. I'd had a difficult birth experience with my first child and I was afraid to go through it all again. Vicki was so supportive at every visit and she assured me that my plan for a birth without medical interventions was absolutely possible. Her positive energy during the labor and delivery assured me that I was doing exactly what I needed to do. She provided top-notch postpartum care and even helped me with some breastfeeding issues I was having in the first couple of weeks. I felt so empowered by this birth and I am forever deeply grateful for Vicki's support of my positive experience. read more

WOW!! even thou in my first visit I had a negative review because of the staff. That got taken care of right away. Anyways the staff didn't matter. I went in late till I was 30 something weeks and I am so blessed I found a person so kind to help me deliver my 4th baby and specially being a v-back. Most doctors just want to back off; because it is dangerous. But coming out of another v-back that was really rough. I wanted to do it again. With no pain medication or having to get induced and I did it!!!! all thanks to Vicky!!!! She believed in me and knew I was capable. On 4/1/2021 I had my 4th baby all natural v-back. It was the most natural experience, still painfull but awesome so AWESOME EXPERIENCE!!!But Vicky's techniques and guidance made it a much more smoother ride. She respected my belief, my decisions. I am writing this review so any woman looking for an obgyn or midwife will know this is where you wanna go! I drove from santa monica to orange county for my appointments. Even got a hotel on my due date just to be near Vicky. GOD made it happened and HE put the right person for me. Just know if you experience any negativity with the staff just tell them and they will put them on check. Thank you doctor Akerman too for believing I could do it too even with that slight doubt you had. But you knew I could.. lol. This front office is terrible. The front office staff and nurses have absolutely no compassion for pregnant woman. This is my first pregnancy and even though I was told by the Dr. Akerman at my 1st appointment to call if there was any spotting/bleeding, I called and was treated as if I was bothering them and I was an idiot for calling; the nurse practitioner said she would order a urine test to rule out a UTI and she never did it. I also had Covid while pregnant and called and was again treated as if I was an inconvenience while simultaneously being made to feel it was my fault I got Covid and told I may have caused damage to my placenta since I've contracted Covid. Most recently I had blood work done that concerned me as I had it showed I was anemic( the results go to be as well via Quest)--over a week went by and no one bothered to call to advise me on what to do next, I would have never gotten the time of day if I didn't happen to have my regularly scheduled appointment. I was upset and shared how disappointed I was to the front office staff and Nora replied aggressively to me as if she was in a street fight, "I don't even know who you are."This did send me over the edge, you are working with scared, hormonal pregnant woman and this is how you treat them? She continued to treat me like garbage when I checked out. In the seven months I've been here, I've seen a Doctor twice, all the other times have been various Nurse Practitioners. I won't even know who will deliver my baby since I have a relationship with no one in this office. I feel as though no one here cares about me and the health in my baby and I'm just a number and an inconvenience. When I go in for appointments, I'm never seen on time, I wait no less than 30-60 minutes and the office does seem to have high turnover. I'm later in my pregnancy and I am in the process of switching OBs, as a result of all that I've listed. I was going to try and stick it out but I'm starting to fear it may cost my Baby's life if I stick around. My opinion would be to avoid unless you want to add extra stress to your pregnancy. read more

I really like my provider she was nice and personable and she took care of my pregnancy. But I have had issues with how the office bills my insurance. There were four specific times when they billed my insurance incorrectly and stated that I had $40 copay when in fact the coverage should have been covered completely with $0 copay. The front office staff are not friendly. I will be looking for a new ob after this visit since I do not want to deal with the stress of incorrect billing issues and having to call my insurance for every visit. Additionally, the wait times for appointments are long too. There have been times when I waited 1.5 hrs after my appointment time. Find a different ob/gyn. read more

I have had the worst experience with Dr. Akerman's office. They are very impersonal and it's like they don't even read your chart before seeing you. All of the providers that I have seen have conflicting treatment plans. I have to advocate for myself because all they do is tell you what they can't do for you. They are more worried about billing than they are about you as an individual. I've had hyperemesis for most of my pregnancy and Dr. Akerman's advice is to just go to the ER and get hydration and won't put me off of work or help in any way. He tried to rush my visit and gave me vague answers to my questions without even looking at my chart until I told him to review my chart. I honestly can't describe a more honest and understanding OB !! Since day one they have really stepped it up to make sure they know every detail and every problem that I have so they can take all the proper precautions for me and my baby. They take the time to figure you out and give you a pleasant experience. I'm a high risk pregnancy and they take me very seriously with all my concerns not like other OB"s who dismiss your problems and say " it's normal ." I was recommended here by family and I can say I'm not disappointed. Makes me want to have another baby after this. read more

Dr. Akerman's entire practice is A+! I went to a big fancy office for my first prenatal appointment and just felt like a small fish in a big pond and then a friend recommended this office. At Dr. Akerman's I felt like he and his staff really cared about me and baby. Dr. Akerman put me at ease about my pregnancy and gave me really good tips for the nerve-wracking first 13 weeks of pregnancy. Although, every appointment can't be with him I've been mostly comfortable. Debbie, the NP is amazing, she is so knowledgeable and experienced I felt as safe with her as I did with Dr. She's definitely a gem and an asset to the practice. Through every bump in the road (pregnancy is not all fun and games, who knew!?) they tried to keep me as calm as possible and keep the positivity going. The front desk people are very kind. They're always willing to answer my questions no matter how silly they are. Jimmy in billing is so gracious and nice, if there are ever any issues he will listen, explain and work with you so the result works for both patient and the practice. I have to say I did my research and hands down, Dr. Akerman and his staff, PA Debbie and his med. assistant are phenomenal! My two kids were delivered by Akerman in 2016 and 2018. The staff always answered all my questions, greeted me with smiles, great phone etiquette, did all the paper work as needed. They are a very busy office and they do a great job at holding down the fort. Akerman is a very busy Dr. as he is ranked as #1 in OC. He definitely had quick appointments but if there were concerns or question he took extra time to answer and help guide the delivery decision. He has a great sense of humor and good bedside manners. Debbie is AMAZING! She was very personable, she is comforting and also knew how to answer questions and guide me along my pregnancy. I felt as though My baby and I were in GOOD Hands and that is all you want. I had some issues with my first delivery and DRM and I were trying our best to do natural delivery but we had to do an emergency CS. he did a phenomenal job on delivering a healthy baby girl and stitched me up beautifully... didn't even touch my tattoo On the 2nd delivery, this was the BEST experience of my LIFE! wWho knew an OR room would be so much fun! scheduled CS... Akermans Med asst. played my favorite reggae music, the anasteologist was so good I didn't feel a thing! and when I got nausea he fixed that in split second. All I remember is Bob Marley playing and Akerman saying your healthy baby boy I bet is 8 lbs... we all had a bet going.... the winner was me.. 7.01 lbs! There I was crying with tears seeing my husband smile and THE BEST moment was when Akerman pulls him out and peeks my boys head over the blue apron... hearing his first cry. I switched to doctor Akerman after a not-so great experience with my previous doctor (doctor wouldn't see her patients until the 2nd trimester). My very first consultation I met with doctor Akerman and he was very upfront with what to expect and gave me good advise to ensure I had a healthy pregnancy. When it was time to have this baby, I encountered complications but luckily doctor Akerman was there to deliver and follow up with me and my baby for several days after showing how much he cares for his patients! I highly recommend him and will come back to him when/if I have a second child. read more

Dr Akerman is extremely helpful and an amazing doctor. He helped my wife twice when she had two scares during her early stages of pregnancy. He took her in the same day as a new patient after we contacted him two hours before his shift was over to see us. He also answered a call from us at 8:30 pm on a Friday night on another occasion.
