After experiencing the heartbreak of a previous stillbirth, this pregnancy came with a lot of fear and anxiety. From the very beginning, he was incredibly supportive, reassuring, and compassionate. He always took the time to listen to my concerns, answer my questions, and reassure me that we were going to do everything possible to make sure my baby arrived safely and healthy. His confidence and constant reassurance helped me get through some of the most difficult and emotional moments of my pregnancy. When it was finally time to deliver, he made sure both my baby and I were safe and well cared for. There are a lot Of Doctors, midwife's & Np that you will see through out your appts (unless you request to be seen by a certain person) From start to end everything was clear, they sent me for bloodwork when needed. Dr. Sogol Ashrafian is the best OB I have ever seen. I will never go to anyone but her! For YEARS I have had pain and doctors told me "it was just stress" and dismissed it. I have always been scared of going to the OB because I have had bad experiences. In my very first appointment, Dr. Ashrafian was so validating, caring, confident, and informative. She was quick to order any tests I needed and was with me every step of the way. She is an angel. She also did my laparoscopic surgery and did a fantastic job. She has been my biggest advocate and support and has helped me take steps towards healing. I'm so glad I had the surgery and was validated that it wasn't "just stress" like other doctors told me. Again, I will never go to anyone else but Dr. Sogol. I'm so thankful for her. The front office gals are so nice, funny and caring too. All of my experiences in this office have been great. I have mixed feelings about this place. At AkermanMed, you have to be seen by every Obgyn and midwife before you can officially choose a provider. Wait time can get pretty long depending on the day. For the positive, I would say that after meeting everyone, Dr. Lao was the best here. She was caring, empathic, and knowledgeable. She listened to every concern. She was also a great surgeon. My pregnancy and delivery experience were made better by her. Sarah who works the front desk was also very friendly and sweet. Now for the negative. I had an IUD placement at the office by Dr. Barr that ended up being a very traumatic experience. I received a diagnosis afterward that the IUD perforated through my uterus into another organ. I wish that the deployment was stopped if something didn't seem right. Some offices offer ultrasound-guided IUD insertion, so look into that instead. I felt like I went through hell and back the subsequent months after insertion. The office tried to fix it, but the experience just went downhill from there. I had multiple procedures, but it couldn't be removed. I requested CT/MRI scans, but didn't get them. The IUD location was discussed as possibly being in the stomach cavity, which it wasn't. Scheduling appts were also difficult. I ended up going to UCI and thankfully met an experienced Obgyn who found it through ultrasound, confirmed with MRI scans, and collaborated with another specialist to remove it for me. All in all, I would still recommend Dr. Lao for pregnancy and childbirth. However, I would be hesitant to recommend anything else here. read more

Nicole and noami are the worst workers I've ever had to deal with when they refused to look in my file for a results they just said I have no other option to talk to anyone else in the office over and over and over and over and over and over again bickering for hours they also sent over the wrong medication and we bickered about that for 3 days they refuse to get anyone else to look at it and ask the doctor for the right thing. finally I had to get a hold of somebody in medical records to get me help and the office manager Liz got a doctor who is available that same day to get on the phone with me and she figured it out and sent over the correct medication and i told them exactly the times on the phone when I had to deal with those two, and even tried to bicker without b a vking down saying that I never got a pap smear done!!! ...I'm like hello, I remember being on the table with a scapula in me, just a week ago that they said, the tests never get taken and trying to call me a liar. Like I'm so stupid! Zero help trying to get it resolved. Horrific bad stubborn goat attitudes saying theres no way to fix it and refused to look in the file and tell me the doctor ordered a blood test for it!!! I delivered my third child and last child, our first boy, at St. Joes after being in the hospital for 3 weeks due to complications. Dr. Lao was not my doctor (Akerman was) but she's who was on call when my son decided he wanted to come at 36 weeks. She has such a calm demeanor and her voice as well which really helped me as I have very bad anxiety and I worry so much. At 3:30am my son was born via c section and the whole experience was just great! My whole pregnancy I wanted Akerman to deliver my baby as he had delivered my others and nobody else but I'm so grateful to Dr. Lao for making the whole process amazing. read more

Beware of going here even if they are "IN NETWORK" providers for your insurance. Dr Lao is considered a "tier 2" on insurance so you'll have to pay a higher copay even though it says she is "in network" with my insurance. It took me a long time to be able to write this review, over 3 years to be frank. I went to this office for my first pregnancy and was initially hoping to see Dr. Lao and had been told good things about her. when I began going here, I looked past the fact that the wait was 45 min past appointment time, every single visit. They told me I'd have to see different providers each time so I would know who was delivering me in case it was an on call. Aside from the long wait times, things were going smoothly until it got closer to talking about my birth plan. This was during Covid so I could only have my husband present during birth, doula and extra support person were not allowed so I had to put my trust in this providers and the nurses at st Joseph's. Towards the end of pregnancy, When I told Dr. Akerman I desired an unmedicated birth and would like to labor at home for the first stages, he laughed at me. He asked me "how did you get to this office", I told him "I drove" and he responded with "why didn't you ride a horse" and I responded "because I have a car" and he said "exactly, technology is there use it". He proceeded to tell me about a young patient he delivered prior who wanted unmediated also and caved at 2cm and that I would also cave. I was defeated knowing I was close to labor and felt like I couldn't switch providers, but was seeing Dr. Lao next visit and would talk to her about it. She was also rude and basically told me there was no reason to not get an epidural and that I should just get it because it's easier. If that was their personal belief, that is totally fine but to make someone feel small for a choice that does not relate to patient safety is wildly inappropriate and disappointing. The reason I feared epidural was because of fear of stalling and creating a cascade of interventions that would lead to C-section. Well, my water started leaking when I was about 37 weeks and when I went to the office they told me I needed to go get induced (I know know better as I was GBS - and could have waited to see if labor started on its own and monitor for signs of infection at home). They started pit very fast, I was told I could only have liquids, I was .5cm and after 10 hours of pit with contractions less than 1 min apart, I was hardly progressing. Dr Ackerman came in at some point offering no help just wanting me to get an epidural and to be honest I knew I wanted one but was so upset by the things he said, I didn't want to prove him right, so I suffered through for hours, in pain, hungry but also nauseated (I was throwing ip when he walked in and he legit didn't give a heck), with no progression until my sweet nurse convinced me it was okay to get an epidural and it would help me progress. Of course this started a cascade of multiple interventions for low HR and I ended up with a C-section. The biggest blessing of all was that no one from this office was on call and I didn't have to see any of their faces while I was cut open. Postpartum I saw the NP or PA (I think her name was Debbie) a few times and expressed concern with PPA and graphic images I'd get in my mind (more than just fear of dropping my baby, more of exactly what that would look like, blood etc) she told me this was NORMAL and I suffered through PPA for over a year and not once did any one ask how I felt regarding my experience, my C-section, etc just handed me the depression scale and that's is. I just want this office to know, that fast forward 3.5 years, I moved back to Arizona, found a wonderful provider who gives a damn about MOM AND BABY (not just getting baby out without having to work hard), and I had a beautiful UNMEDICATED VAGINAL BIRTH AFTER C-SECTION. I couldn't recommend this office less l after knowing now what it feels like to be seen, heard and cared for. I'm also an RN and have never pushed such bias on my patients and made them feel as tiny as this office made me feel. I could say so much more, but this is enough of my time and energy. I keep thinking about to this appointment I had a few weeks ago and how frankly awful it was. First appointment of the day. They made a huge deal about completing my paperwork before I arrived - even called to make sure I had. I did, they got it . I emailed it over along with a ton of information about my medical history and my reason for my visit. I showed up ten minutes early and the door was locked so I just waited until they opened it. It took them forever to figure out how to get the files saved to my file. It was about 20 minutes until I was seen. When I saw the doctor, they chose to spend a lot of time talking about something else in my medical history that wasn't relevant to my visit. I am very aware of my pre-existing condition that I am managing with my primary care doctor, it wasn't necessary to speak on it. It was also very clear they didn't look at my files because I had to rehash everything I sent over. "You seem to be kind of anxious".. My concerns felt kind of waved away as anxiety. I was given a follow up appointment. I really have no idea what I expected but I don't feel like I was helped. In woman's health, this is a common problem. Women know their own bodies. They know when something is wrong. They know when they might need help. I was looking for some more medical guidance then the Internet searches I've conducted on my own. I wanted to have a conversation about my health and be educated by a professional. Instead I was told some of my symptoms might be related to anxiety? What woman hasn't heard that load of crap before only to find out she was in fact right, it wasn't anxiety but a biological reason. For me I even came loaded with the paperwork to show this.. but instead of taking the time to look at it, I was shrugged off. I really hope this practice will start to slow down and take patients concerns seriously, actually listen and learn why your patients are seeking help and maybe be a little slow to dismiss concerns. In the end I spent $40 to talk to myself. I mean, I am shocked that they didn't schedule a pap or pelvic exam for me since I'm overdue but frankly relived because I would just be canceling that appointment. read more

I feel bad writing a poor review for this team because I don't think the doctors a the issue, it's their reception and office workers. I went to this clinic for a simple prescription that gets regularly refilled and after 2 years of working with this office I rarely ever get a refill on time. Time and time again my pharmacy is telling me that they can never get in contact with them for a refill which means I'm usually out of my prescription for a week (or more) each time. The office ladies that I talk to for help have been rude and unhelpful when I am trying to resolve issues which just makes everything worse. Ive also been charged for an appointment that took place over a year ago, and when I asked them why my insurance didn't cover this charge they told me I didn't update my insurance. I actually have messages and call records from that day confirming I had called them giving them my updated insurance before I took that appointment. Whoever in that office who was meant to update the insurance never did and they said there was nothing they could do and ended up charging me hundreds of dollars for THEIR mistake a YEAR later. It's unbelievable. Despite how wonderful I hear the doctors are I would never recommend this practice because of how unprofessional and lazy the office ladies are. read more

I will not be coming here ever again. Had some blood work done for an issue I was having and they then sent me to get some additional tests which I didn't even need per my new doctor. When seeing Sogol Ashrafian she was very dismissive and didn't listen to me, didn't want to hear me out, I felt rushed, and I felt very judged when stating I didn't want to have kids. Doctor Ashrafian was quick to move on from one patient to the next and left an unfortunate impression as a first time patient... Secondly, when going over my results they had a mid wife go over all my blood work. Why would they have a mid wife and not a doctor? The mid wife then told me due to a high level in one of my tests "it's most likely a tumor or it could be something else." Who immediately jumps to a tumor? That's not great, and for a month straight I was scared, fearful, yet eager for a second opinion. *thankfully I don't have a tumor and the mid wife was WRONG when giving out information.* Lastly, my experience with the office ladies was great up until I asked for my medical records to be sent to my new doctor. When sending in the request I came into the office and asked them to send it that day if possible to which the admin stated she would.... It wasn't until 3 days later and the day of my appointment did I learn they just sent them over 5 minutes before my new appointment. As stated before, I will not be coming here ever again and cannot and will not recommend this location so long as Sogol Ashrafian is still at Ackerman Med. read more

I visited for my first several prenatal appointments before switching groups. The front desk girls are very nice but I felt like I could never get a word in with any of the doctors. After waiting about 1.5 hours to be seen (each appointment) the doctor or midwife was only present for 5-10 mins. I felt very rushed, I was repeatedly spoken over when trying to ask a question or explain a feeling/concern in more detail. The rooms and equipment carts were dirty (caked in dust) which I had never seen before in a medical setting. There was no enthusiasm or excitement from any of the doctors or midwives that I had met with; this is not the end of the world I understand anyone can have a bad day or be tired, but when it's your first pregnancy, first prenatal appointment, first everything, you'd expect at a least a "congratulations" or a "are you excited?" some sort of human connection. When I called to say I was switching offices they didn't ask a thing or if I had any reason (maybe this is protected by HIPA) but it seemed more like they weren't surprised. If you are someone that can afford 2-hour mid-day appointments and wants minimal interaction with staff, then this office might be great for you. I am personally hoping for more support while I learn about pregnancy for the first time, so this was not a good fit for me. read more

Last time I waited one hour then they said dr. has an emergency surgery and she left then a nurse (Debi)met me! And before she walk to my room she said to receptionist " oh, doctor left, why she us still here?!" This time, I've been sitting in the room for 45 minutes and nothing happened yet! I can never speak more highly of a physician than Dr. Akerman. I myself am an RN, so I am overly critical because I have seen the good, the bad, and the ugly in the medical world. Dr. Akerman has delivered 3 of my 4 children. I've had 2 operations with him as well. My last pregnancy was trouble from the beginning. I started hemorrhaging at 11 weeks. When I called, the girls said come in right away. No questions asked. Thank goodness my miracle baby was still hanging on. I had developed a large subchorionic hemorrhage. We shared hugs and tears, and I was put on bedrest because I was at a huge risk of delivering early. I had quite a few medical issues arise unrelated to my pregnancy during the pregnancy. Dr. Akerman was there every step of the way checking on me and my baby. 2 weeks before I delivered my son, my dad, my hero died suddenly. I was heartbroken, Dr. Akerman heard the news and personally reached out to me to give me his condolences. If that doesn't speak volumes about him, I don't know what does. I've watched Dr. A go from 1 practice to now have grown 3. He spends so much time making sure the doctors, NPs, Midwives and PA's he brings in are the right fit. Dr. Lao has been one of the greatest additions to his already incredible practice. I am forever grateful for Doctors like him and Dr. Lao! They are what medicine should be! I went to see Dr Akerman at the Irvine office and I would without a doubt recommend him! I had to get a cervical biopsy which if you rely on Dr Google and/or Dr Tik Tok, it's not something that has a lot of reassuring info you can gather. So yes I was beyond nervous expecting to be in a serious amount of pain per Dr Google. The moment I went in from checking in to getting my vitals I was reassured that I was going to be OK. Everyone was so nice and welcoming. The procedure itself Dr Akerman explained the process and everything to me-- going over what he was doing and what was being used. The biopsy itself couldn't have gone better in my opinion ( I mean getting the "all clear" is the goal). I wouldn't even call it pain that I felt, it was more discomfort if anything. The first sample that was taken I didn't even realize it happened until after. Plus he was fast!! The office space is also very clean. I am very happy with my experience! read more

Truly the best. I am so happy to have gone with Akerman as my OB for both babies! Had my daughter May 2022 delivered by Dr. Akerman and just delivered my son June 2023 by Dr. Lao. Both deliveries were completely different given my circumstances but I never felt so comfortable and assured that I was most definitely in the right hands. Their check-in, scheduling and overall service is A1. There can be a little bit of a wait from time to time but where don't you wait at a doctor's office? I've waited 30-45 mins at max and that's less than a handful of times. Just check-in and use to restroom to leave a urine sample to save some time! The appointments are straight to the point and the the entire staff is really there to answer any questions if needed. Some people might think the visits aren't worth the wait or even unnecessary given how quickly they see you but just go to all your appts and you'll be in great hands when the time comes. I am beyond impressed by their overall efficiency in service and care received for both myself and my babies! I highly recommend this facility to all soon-to-be mamas -- you will not be disappointed! Oh and the office is literally right next to St Joseph Hospital so should you arrive to the hospital almost too late and need Dr. Lao to sprint over to deliver your baby in 22 minutes, she will LOL. I was seen at this location up to 25 weeks and NEVER met Dr. Akerman at any of my visits. Every appointment I had felt really rushed.. I waited longer in the waiting room to be seen than the actual appointments. Negative reviews for front desk are absolutely true. Make sure you confirm with your insurance if they are within network because the front desk won't even tell you. I've met my deductible and was paying all these high copays not thinking anything of it till I called. Last minute finding another MD I called Dr. Akerman's front desk to forward my docs. They estimated 7-10 days to get this done but since my appt was sooner they'll do this "one time courtesy". It's probably because I'm leaving them as a patient I don't have any importance anymore. Fyi, I was having really bad nerve pain on my leg and they referred me to a physical therapist which I've been seeing twice a week. They won't sign off for work disability until 36 weeks which I found so ridiculous. I love my new MD and glad I didn't settle here. read more

Not only were the doctors, and all the staff in the office super helpful during my pregnancy, helping me navigate high risk situations and guiding me through every step of the way. Although Dr. Akerman was not on call to deliver my son, (babies come when they want not when they're supposed to LOL) I was pleased that he consistently checked in with the doctor on call, and came to see me as soon as he was there. Not only did he check on me, but he also checked in on the baby as well. The other reviews about the front staff are true!!! The receptionists suck. Was on the way here when I received a call that they needed my insurance information. Due to static as I was driving, the receptionist said she couldn't hear me clearly so I asked if I could bring in my card to which the receptionist said sure. Arrived early for my appt, printed and completed the required paperwork at home and the receptionist says my insurance isn't showing up on her end. I ask her to call the insurance company as I had never had any issues prior and still work at the same job, she's annoyed and says I'll have to wait because they're short staffed and busy. Apparently she calls at some point and says they hung up on her and I'll have to reschedule my appt because of this. I tell her that I will call the insurance company myself. I obtained a reference number that they asked for within five minutes and I'm still here waiting 45 minutes after my appt time. Do I have to do their job for them? Being short staffed is not my problem as a patient. The physicians might be good here but like others have said, what's the point if you can't see them? They need some serious retraining for the front staff. I have never had such a terrible experience. read more

I kept waiting to the end of my pregnancy to write a review to be able to write an accurate review. This office is busy, and sometimes the wait can be over an hour to be seen especially if the doctor is running to get deliveries done, and sometimes the visit with the doctor would be really short. But at the end of it I had a really good experience. I'll start by saying the ladies at the front desk are always helpful. They always responded to thins promptly. If you have the Healow app you cash get any question answered without even calling in. I originally came to this practice because I knew Dr Akerman is a great high risk doctor. I was worried about starting a family at a slightly later time in life. He told me not to be worried and that he would make it happen. I didn't end up needing any help with that but the kind of confidence he showed made me have a very positive feeling toward his office. Dr Akerman is a great surgeon and if I needed surgery I would want him to do it. We trusted only him with our son's circumcision. I loved Debbie the nurse practitioner during all my visits. She's caring, very informative, yet respectful of choices. I wanted to try for a more natural birth so I was stoked that the group has midwife Vicki on staff. I was able to get in touch with her after week 36 and she was just very available for questions and help. She was supposed to be off work for a few days when I was due and she offered to come in to help me since she was still in town. I was so touched by her love and dedication to her work and the patients she cares for. She is scientific based but also believes in choices. She helped me come up with a plan I was comfortable with and resources to get ready for the kind of birth I washed. She also guided me in the right direction when my son wasn't moving a lot one night and she kept in touch and let me know I needed an induction to save him due to really low amniotic fluid level. I was really despondent but I was able to make the right call because of the trust I had in Vicki and oh boy was I happy at the end. We found out after delivery that my placenta was definitely failing in parts. Vicki made sure to make it in from a different office to help me deliver. Though my birth plan had gone out the window I felt empowered because of the relationship I had with Vicki. I knew I had made all the right choices and I had a very positive birthing experience. She offered for my husband to help pull the baby out and cut the cord. She was even available for after care questions. FYI If you're choosing a hospital st Joseph maternity was absolutely excellent. I had a really hard time figuring out a hospital but I would definitely go there again. All the nurses on the labor and Delivery floor were trained on spinning babies. They help move the baby down which reduces needs for intervention. I'm so grateful to this office and the experience they gave me and above all for saving my little bundle of joy. read more

Were it not for Dr. Ackerman and his staff, at least one of my beloved twins would likely not be here today. I don't say that to be melodramatic. I wish I did. The fact is, I had quite the high risk pregnancy and our family would have lived in fear daily that things could have really gone south at any moment. I'll spare you my emergency c-section play by play, and tell you what really mattered and matters most in my opinion in an OB. He listened. He listened and his office listened and they responded with advice or xtra testing without acting like I was being unnecessarily concerned. When we discovered fairly early on that one of our twins had a problem with his cord he stayed ahead of the game in having us monitored constantly. Mommas this made me feel So much better! Knowing not only is He watching out for my boys- but MFM's that will assess every last side of the situation and together.. well we got to keep both and they're just disgustingly cute and we couldn't possibly imagine a world in which one quite possibly wouldn't have made it had they been more lax with the situation. My surgery was not only sudden, because of PreE; but scary as it uncovered something wrong with twin b's placenta that very well could have killed Him Too if Dr Ackerman hadn't acted when he did. I can't possibly thank them enough for the prompt action when it was needed.. things went from not great to life endangering for the babies and myself in just hours. You Want a doctor that stays on top of your status if things go south. And finally- my surgical scar is a teeny 4" pale pink hairline in the bikini area- that I Know will be next to invisible in time. No regrets on our choice. Such good reviews but I've never been to the office. I called and try to make an appointment and had the worse experience with the receptionist. Completely unhelpful. I'm sure the Dr. Is great but his staffs really need to get though to customer service training again. read more

I have been seeing Dr Akerman for 3 years now during that time he has helped me with a cervical cancer scare and gave me a leep, delivered my healthy now 2 year old, and lastly was there for me providing knowledge and support during my most recent pregnancy loss at 20 weeks. There is nobody I trust more than this doctor when it comes to my obgyn needs. My husband is a doctor at UCI. When we moved here we had to find a new doctor and he asked around and majority of his colleagues recommended seeing Dr Akerman. He is knowledgeable, hilarious and gets straight to the point. If you are someone who does not want your doctor to be straight up with you then look elsewhere but for the rest of us who wants the best care and can appreciate honesty this is the place for you. We love Debbie as well who is equally as amazing and qualified and Nicole at the check out desk is always so sweet and kind. All the good reviews led me astray! After reading all the good reviews, I went in for one of my first visits in my pregnancy. The front office staff was rude and lazy as other have mentioned, but even worse as Dr Akerman. I could tell that he didn't care about me or my pregnancy at all and just wanted to get on to his next appointment. I tried to ask a couple questions but he was terse and barely answered them. I'm definitely going to look for another OBGYN for my delivery. read more

Please don't believe the reviews you see on yelp. Do your research on OB's. Dr. Akerman is a nice and funny. But honestly he's all about business. Every time i had my check up he was always running around trying to get patients out. He didn't really care. I went through depression and i told him and he's like well that's life. He's not a woman and doesn't know what it feels like to go through pregnancy. Yeah he's a dr but physically he's never been a woman and doesn't know what pregnancy is like. It honestly just seemed like he didn't care or maybe he takes too many patients and he can't handle it. I ended up having a "emergency c-section" and if you do your research he's always doing c-sections when you don't need too. I personally think it's bc of business and of course the insurance money. I wouldn't recommend this dr. The staff is nice and debbie is incredible!!! read more

Ive been seeing Dr.Stephanie Lao for quite some time now since having my tubes removed , honestly, she is the best gynecologist I have ever had not only is she very compassionate and understanding . It almost feels like she's family. I recently had cerene a procedure for heavy bleeding by Dr. Akerman this was my very first time meeting him and he was very nice and made me feel comfortable The procedure was very fast. The pain was very mild. I was moving on with my day right after leaving the office. Honestly, I would recommend coming here for gynecology.
