Dr Akerman and his staff are phenomenal. Not only did he take me on as a new patient, 32 weeks pregnant, and high risk, but he took every precaution that my former OB was blatantly ignoring. He handled my third trimester very well. His referrals to specialists are all great quality. He unfortunately was not on call for my emergency c section, but he stopped in my room and made me feel that I was in good hands. His humor is very dry and he is very direct, but for someone with a high risk pregnancy, a little laughter feels nice to break the tension. Dr Ashrafian and his NP were equally wonderful. I saw Dr Ashrafian twice postpartum for mastitis, and she comforted me while I cried in pain and exhaustion. Forget the negative reviews. Yes, he's always in a hurry, and has a very dry sense of humor, but you're in good hands under his care. He is wonderful at what he does. I promise you. read more

I've been debating whether or not to share this, but I can't stop thinking about the traumatic experience I had here with Dr. Akerman. On October 9, 2024, I was induced at 40 weeks and 3 days pregnant. In the beginning, some staff members were attentive and helpful, but after midnight everything changed. The care became careless and dismissive. I had to receive the epidural three different times because I could still fully feel my contractions and was in extreme pain. Each time, my fiancé or my mom had to leave the room and ask nurses to come check on me because no one was responding on their own. Every time, I was told, "You're fine," even though I was terrified and clearly not fine. One nurse checked my dilation and told me I was 7 cm dilated. I was crying and screaming in pain when Dr. Akerman walked in and said, "What is going on?" I explained that I could still feel every contraction despite the epidural. Instead of taking me seriously, he laughed and said, "We've already given you so much." He then said he was going to check my dilation again. I told him I had literally just been checked 5-10 minutes earlier, but he ignored me. My fiancé asked him to please go slowly and explain what he was doing because I was already extremely sore from how many cervical checks had been done. At that point, I already had a catheter and another internal monitor inserted, so I was already in significant discomfort. Despite being asked multiple times to be gentle, Dr. Akerman ignored us and aggressively inserted his hand, causing me to scream in pain in a way I never have before. He continued moving his fingers around roughly while I cried out. I felt completely violated. Afterward, he suddenly stated I was 9 cm dilated, which confused me because only minutes earlier I had been told I was 7 cm. My fiancé became upset and confronted him, but Dr. Akerman completely ignored him. At that point, I decided I wanted a C-section because I could no longer handle the pain or emotional distress. They prepared me for surgery and took my fiancé and mom to another room to wait. Then, moments later, they returned and told me another emergency C-section was being done first, meaning I had to wait another 15 minutes while still screaming in pain and discomfort. I remember thinking, "Is mine not an emergency too?" When it was finally my turn, they administered anesthesia, but I was given so much that I blacked out completely. I was not awake for the birth of my son. I never got to experience hearing or seeing him come into the world, or seeing my fiancé cut the umbilical cord. It has been over a year and a half, and I still carry the trauma from this experience every single day. What should have been the most beautiful moment of my life became one of the most painful and violating experiences I have ever gone through. I will never return here again. read more

I've been debating writing this review but it's something that I've been thinking about more recently since I am pregnant again. My OB-GYN was unavailable when I went into labor, therefore, the hospital provided me with an on-call OB-GYN, Dr. Ackerman. Dr. Ackerman was professional from the moment he introduced himself to the moment where he safely delivered my baby (reason why it's not just 1 star). It was immediately after delivery where I became extremely uncomfortable and disappointed. While I was still on the table, physically and emotionally vulnerable, he said something inappropriate and deeply unprofessional--he asked if I "want an extra stitch." That's also known as the husband stitch --"An outdated and misogynistic practice of adding an extra suture after childbirth, to increase the male partner's sexual pleasure. It is not based on medical necessity and can cause long-term pain, discomfort, and trauma for the person who gave birth". I was so caught off guard that I just said no thank you and dismissed it so I can focus on bonding with my newborn. After he was done stitching me up and left, I developed postpartum hemorrhaging and I just forgot about the whole exchange. Reflecting now, I feel so violated. His question was disgusting, unethical, and completely unprofessional. Giving birth should be treated with care, dignity, and compassion. I would not recommend this provider to anyone looking for a compassionate or respectful OB-GYN. read more

Before I start, The only thing that upsets me is I'm being charged $50 for a "no show appointment" or "cancellation" but I canceled 48 hours before my appointment. I have another appointment in August but one of the front lady's was being rude about it when I canceled it on the Healow app. The front people didn't tell me about the app until I was ready to have my baby. I don't know who to reach out to if anyone can help please let me know now, I found out I was pregnant and called to make an appointment here they made me an appointment as soon as they could. I was nervous for my first visit but I got treated very well and even got sent home with an extra ultrasound picture of my baby lol. I went here my whole pregnancy from 9 weeks until I had my baby. With being in the hospital several times he was always quick to respond to get the best results for me and get me through for my iron and blood transfusions every other week having a high risk pregnancy and high risk anemia. Having a c section was super scary for me but Dr Akerman gave me the support and told me everything will be okay and pretty much helped me calm down with my anxiety and nerves. The procedure was very quick and my healing process went well. I plan to have one more baby in the future and will definitely come back here as he was super helpful and the staff as well were very nice. read more

Pros: 1.Accept most insurances, 2.Availability is usually not a problem, 3. Front office staff are receptive and generally helpful Cons: 1. Restrooms are not clean or upkept. Example: they don't have supplies like toilet seat covers. 1. The OB drs are usually behind which isn't a problem and you'll probably end up seeing a midwife anyway which is fine because it's a certified professional but I don't think it's necessary to make multiple trips when I don't get to see my attending doctor or even have imaging done in office, I could simply have telephone appointments. I'm currently almost 30 weeks and i've only seen an MD 2 out of the 5 times i've been there. Overall: Would recommend for gyn services, however, would not recommend for Obstetric Services if continuity of care is important to you, perhaps it's just this location, I can't speak for the other offices but this was just my opinion and experience here. UPDATED: After my last visit and having the Doctor personally speak to me on this matter after coming in 30 minutes late for my appointmet , during my personal appointment time that was supposed to be for my baby, when I couldve received a call from somebody instead about why their plumbing does not work well enough for them to have toilet seat covers I changed my review to one star because he was very unprofessional and stated that the reason he is not present is because of the type of insurance I have, and that he can name 10 different doctor's that would see me but I would have to pay cash. This is my third pregnancy coming to Dr.Akerman. My first one unfortunately ended in a missed miscarriage but when I found out I was pregnant again I knew I'd had to come back to him but more specifically his team. I've got the pleasure to meet all of the doctors that work in his office, Dr.Lao, Dr.Mayra, and Vicki (midwife). I was offered to be seen by their midwife,Vicki, whom delivered my baby and made sure my birth plan would go as planned. Although, I made some decisions at the very end that changed my plans but baby got here safe and healthy and that's all that mattered. After delivery, Vicki made sure that I was properly taking care of myself. She would message me to make sure I was getting plenty of rest and help from family since I did have a 2 year old at the time. This was 2 years ago in September 2021. Now, 2 years later I'm back with her. I highly recommend if you are looking into a midwife, she's the one. I wanted an OBGYN team that focused on the medical side as well as the holistic side of things (best of both worlds) and WOW did my husband and I find it! From the moment I called the office to postpartum I was well looked after and taken care of. We ended up using midwifery through Dr. Akermans office and it was the best decision for my pregnancy. Both Vicki & Shayna made sure my pregnancy was progressing smoothly and if anything popped up, they were on it! We delivered at Hoag Newport and had the best experience, Shayna worked hand in hand with the night nurse on staff and it was an All-Star team, both my husband and I said when we left that we really wish to have them both again for our next delivery! Postpartum care from Dr. Akermans office was again, on it! So caring and kind as they are well aware how difficult those first few months are. I even received a text a few days after giving birth from Vicki checking in and Shayne made sure to check in as well. It made me feel seen! Let me just say I have been seeing Akerman for over 14years he is by far the BEST OBGYN that I've ever crossed paths with. The second to the last visit with him we had a talk about his office staff being rude unprofessional and overall lazy. I was set to get a iud in the start or the year I made it clear only wanted him and I was told it was ok. Two days before the appointment I get a call saying he had to reschedule but assured it would be him. I went to my appointment it wasn't him. That happened twice. I ended up pregnant had no heartbeat so November he performed a D&C. I've been struggling since the week after the procedure and kept calling after hours line no luck other doctors on duty don't return call. The women who answer aren't able to assist I has two blood transfusions since that procedure. I'd like to see akerman and it's been impossible On 11/17 I had an appointment I called on my way down from San Diego with my husband and child present the women on the phone say yes if I was 10-15min late it was ok. I advised her my father just had a liver transplant I'm still bleeding I'd really like to see him. I'm assured I will my appointment is 915 I arrive at 923 I'm told have a seat didn't check in since I'm late at this point I tell the girl I'm going to the car I stained my pants. My husband goes up the street gets me pants and I'm calling office explaining I'll be up in 10min I keep getting put on hold the Santa Ana office number after about 10min transfers you to a voicemail I keep calling back and getting placed on hold at 948 I get told that I can't be seen they only have a 15minute grace period. I call orange looking for lupe the office manager to be told she doesn't work on Fridays. I was upset yes but I was still respectful last week I receive a letter signed by akerman stating I am being dropped as a patient for missing appointments and being rude to the staff and I am at a loss for words. I just spoke to him about this topic and he agreed with me yet the level of disrespect I felt from the staff but to see Akermans signature I was shocked. He's delivered two or my kids healthy and I have been more then understanding as he's replaced some staff and training. Per the letter I was told I had until 12/19 to see him and I've been calling since office staff refuses to make an appointment and keeps putting me on hold and now I cannot get a return call from lupe. Akerman always appreciates positive reviews and I've left many on google for him but I have no nice words for him to not even give me a opportunity to resolve this matter 14years I am stunned. He was very caring when he treated my wife and went above and beyond in an emergency situation. His business is also very honest. I received a check in the mail from his office two years after an emergency visit, for a refund after he was eventually able to bill my insurance when we initially paid with cash. I call over to simply get an appointment and Leonor refusing to give me one first she goes around looking for a scan order from the gyno that doesn't exist before asking me where it is, and then she tells me I'm supposed to have my doctor send one over and I said why don't you look it up on wave and then she goes hold forever for that and then I say how about I email it to you okay email it and then call us back in 5 minutes to make an appointment. After visiting both locations, I found the Santa Ana location to be most convenient for myself. We live south of OC and this location is conveniently located nearby the 405 fwy. Parking is much easier to access and you don't need to worry about getting your parking validated or driving around to find parking on the street. The staff is amazing! They are super friendly, welcoming, and bilingual. The office has a great variety of music playing in the background at a adequate sound level. They have a diffuser with a very subtle and tranquil scent. Their restroom is always clean and so are the lobby and exam rooms. Our doctor Allan Akerman MD Facog allowed us to have a birth plan and our doula join during labor and delivery. I loved the fact that he delivers at Hoag. We ended up delivering at Hoag Irvine after a mixup, but we wouldn't of had it any other way. He ensured that our birth went from least invasive to most invasive methods of induction and kept baby and mommy's health in mind. He followed ACOG's research suggestion on inducing at 37 weeks due to our high risk pregnancy due to Chronic Hypertension. His team of nurse practitioners, ObGyns, and midwife's gave us peace of mind throughout our pregnancy. We got to meet mostly all the of nurse practitioners, midwives, and OBGYN. We opted to have Dr. Akerman deliver our child because of his experience, knowledge, and expertise in the field. The fact that he was rated top 3 OBGYN in Orange County it offered us peace of mind during the unknowns of labor and delivery. Dr. Akkerman reassured us about the benefits throughout every decision like induction and epidural. Best thing I could have done, was to get an epidural! He had mentioned it during our visits. I was very adamant about getting an epidural, yet during active labor I needed to get one. We had baby 20 minutes after the epidural was placed! I was so close to make him my OBGYN but then I realized he was the one who delivered my son in 2021. Canceled that appointment real fast. He took his time to scrub in and let my son slip out of me. The nurses caught the baby luckily. His report of medical care was not accurate. He failed to mention my son's chord was wrapped around his neck and he was not breathing. He also failed to mention the huge amount of blood I lost in the report. He did nothing but watch me bleed out and tell me to quiet down. All this doctor did was sew me up very aggressively and leave. He was the OBGYN on call at ST Joseph's. What a horrible and traumatic experience. No thank you! read more

Finding Dr. Ackerman was BLESSING! My OB had retired not only was I 7 months pregnant but I was high risk. No OB wanted to take me in. I called Dr. Ackerman and they saw me that week. Ever since I knew I was in great hands! The staff is amazing as well. At my delivery I did see Dr Lao and Vicki the midwife. I was overall impressed with how comfortable they make you feel. I also had a complication after birth which required surgery and he got to the ER at 5 AM to see me then later performed my surgery. I can't say it enough: I get the best care here. Dr. Akerman delivered my son in 2018 and Dr. Lao delivered my daughter in 2021. Both pregnancies kind of sucked for me but Dr. Akerman and his staff always took good care of me. I've seen him, Debbie (NP), Dr. Lao, and Midwife Vicky throughout my time as a patient here. Everyone always took the time to answer the millions of questions I had and I was always treated with care and respect. Shout out to the girls at the front desk, too. I had my 3rd baby girl with Akerman , My Jaylani Rose Reyes was born via c section & Dr Akerman corrected my previous scars from the other 2 sections i received. My visits were always welcoming and very time efficient , i enjoyed the cute office rooms and more than anything i appreciated all the time that went into each visit , if i had a question or concern. The after care at Saint Joseph was amazing , i was already a mother but having a new born after 10 years really had me anxious . Dr Akerman, I wish you can read my story, please cheer your team up so other patients like me wouldn't have the same bad experience. I was scheduled an annul woman check back in October 2020 after my last prenatal visit. ( I always follow their instruction and sometimes even they have a few minor management mess, I tried not to complain. ) However, June 28th I received a bill from them and they changed my annual OB check to office visit. I was very surprised about the change and learned from their staff I should not go to visit my family doctor the entire year of 2021 if I scheduled with OB office. The accountant told me most people know this in unite state ( by the way, I immigrated to unite state 12 years ago; anyone in Akerman's office please correct me if the accountant didn't repeat this 5 times) To get more paid they have to change my patient code without inform me. During the phone call with different people in this office, they just read the bill to me again and again, no one is willing to face the mistake. I have to face their Impatience and unprofessionally customer service. Because Dr Akerman just helped me with my delivery last year, I don't want file any complain to any organization so I paid the bill. From the minute he walked in I felt like he was looking down on me and judging me for not knowing all the of ins and outs of pregnancy and what to expect from child birth. Dr. Akerman and his staff are amazing. I have had 2 previous miscarriages (not while under Dr. Akerman's care) and when I got pregnant again I was terrified. I found Dr. Akerman, him and I am so grateful for him and his amazing staff. My pregnancy was complicated because of my high blood pressure, subchorionic hematoma and etc.. The office always made me feel comfortable and they all are so caring. I delivered my rainbow baby in January 2020. Also had another baby boy November 2021 (also another complicated pregnancy). I couldn't be more thankful and grateful for Dr. Akerman and his amazing staff!! Now I am back with a ovarian cyst and once again his team has been amazing even with all my questions. Dr. Akerman is an excellent doctor decided to go with him again for my second pregnancy and don't regret it one bit! I have recommended him and will keep doing so just because of how great of a doctor he is. Dr lau also the most sweetest doctor and also very helpful. Yes there can be wait times but that is normal, they are normal people who are busy and can get backed up totally understandable. The fact of the matter is they are great doctors and know exactly what they are doing I've always felt taken care of. Dr Akerman is the best . He was straight to the point and informative . As this was my first pregnancy he ensured that I was guided through the whole process and preventative tests . Most important he was forward with me when I was at the delivery room and he did not hesitate to make the best decisions for my baby and I . The staff is wonderful which includes Jennifer , Anabel , and Mayra . They gave me tips and support . Every time I called they made sure I was given the best service and all my questions were answered . The samples that they have available are only the best . My wife and I used him he seemed good until he discovered that are baby was not going to make it. After that he told me that as the husband I need to have my wife termite the baby because there is know reason to carry a life that can't make it outside the womb. After we made are decision to carry he wouldn't take are calls or set any appointments with us. Once we found a new Doctor for my wife and Adelaide Dr. Akerman didn't send files any files to the new doctor. I'm the end he show Gross negligence towards my wife and baby. After doing some research about Dr. Akerman months later I found that was pretty common practice for him to neglect patients like this. I'll post a photo of his license. Dr. Akerman is a wonderful Physician, he has delivered my other child in the past and pretty soon, another. The problem I have is with his Santa Ana Clinic. About 1 month ago, I was 3 months pregnant and I rushed to the St Joseph's ER for Threatened abortion (Possible miscarriage). I had heavy bleeding and blood clots. Thankfully, everything went was ok. That same day I already had scheduled a Nuchal Translucency Ultrasound and a regular OB appointment. The Santa Ana office called me and asked if I could come in sooner due to a cancellation they had that day. I specifically asking receptionist if I could see a MD because I was just discharged from the hospital due to a possible miscarriage? She said "yeah, yeah, yeah that should be fine" and rushed me off the phone. Upon arriving, I had my NT Ultrasound and my appointment. Both the Ultrasound Tech and Medical Assistant announced my name, No AIDET, no introduction just turned and walked super fast and way ahead of me in a hurry. The Medical Assistant took me into a room that was still dirty and was just used by another patient. She Didn't wipe anything down. She ripped off the table paper and pulled down a new piece. Firstly, COVID! and Secondly, I don't know if a patient just had a pap smear or a vaginal exam. That's disgusting. Now, I'm a nurse and I would never bring a patient into a dirty room. I ended up seeing a NP who was very pleasant, but again, after what I had experienced that day, I left unsure of what the bleeding was or could have been caused by. Lastly, upon leaving the discharge receptionist was not very pleasant and was rude to not just me, but other patient's. My NIPT lab order was not scanned into my chart and she was unsure of what to do, so she called the Orange location to help located my lab order. Overall, I was not a happy camper at all that day and the office appointment was not satisfying or a bit at all relieving, especially as an expectant mother and the 'miscarriage scare' I had experienced. At the end of the day, I just wanted Empathy, and I didn't feel like anyone gave a care in the world. Bedside manner is just not the same anymore. read more

Dr. Akerman is completely unprofessional and makes very disrespectful sexual jokes. He is dismissive of what the patient is saying and is very insisting. I went in for my last check up before having my baby and he didn't even ask just stated i would be getting an IUD, i responded to him saying no im fine and he kept saying yes. Once again i repeated i would not be getting and IUD and my husband and i would be discussing our option after giving birth, well his response was yes, you are getting an IUD we will be putting it in. He also asked how did i not know i was pregnant until my late pregnancy and stated i was in denial and asked if i didn't know how babies were made that he has DVD's there. I recognize and appreciate quality care and wanted to share my experiences. I came to Akerman Med due to dissatisfaction with my previous OBGYN and have made the best choice my OBGYN needs. The clinicians at this clinic have always treated me with courtesy, respect, and professionalism. Dr. Akerman is knowledgeable, keeps a positive attitude despite long and stressful days, and has a good sense of humor. Dr. Liao is friendly and compassionate. In particular, Midwife Vicki A. is second to none. She is compassionate, knowledgeable, experienced, confident, and very personable. She took great care of me from day one of my challenging pregnancy to date (post-partum) and is patient with me as well as actively listens. Though she is busy and being pulled in different directions at times, she often makes me feel like she has time to listen, dedicates attention to me, and goes above and beyond to attend to my care even during her days off. Vicki is always supportive, encouraging and is very understanding of my unique needs. She addressed my medical needs holistically and supports me in any way that she can. One of my other specialists who have treated me over many years commended my OBGYN clinicians for doing a great job at managing my case given my complex medical situation. There need to be more clinicians that care about their patients and have excellent bedside manners like Vicki in healthcare. She is an asset to Akerman Med. It is also easy to communicate with the office via phone and online portal as their phone menu is brief to get through to staff and they are well-staffed. I'm so glad that I was referred to Dr.Akerman by a friend. Being under Dr. Akerman's care and seeing how amazing his team is, there is no one who can compare. From the start, Dr.Akerman made me feel comfortable because he is easy going, funny, a really good person and doctor overall. He is straightforward and that's what I like about him. I know that I can trust his words. I've also had appointments with Silvia and she is just as amazing, she's a good listener and is supportive in every way. Love her ! Also I love my girls! Anabel, Myra, and Jennifer. They make my appointments so much more fun. We have a lot of laughs and I know they really care about me.
