I met this Dr in 1984 after several years of pain & undiagnosed problems. Dr Mark was knowledgeable & most importantly honest. He told me I would most likely have cancer return in 20 years but it's 20 years later, now 31! I've had 3 different cancers now & survived them. It's been 17 years since Dr. Rettenmaier did my full hysterectomy. I was doing a search just to see if he was still practicing & came across this. Little did we know even after doing my pre- operation blood work, etc. that I inherited a bleeding disorder so soon after my operation I was bleeding internally. I was looking for a female gynecologist oncologist for a friend and came across Dr. Rettenmaier. I called his office to leave a message after hours. I received a call shortly after from Dr. Rettenmaier himself. I explained my friends diagnosis and that although his Yelp reviews are excellent, my 82 year old friend would be more comfortable with a female gynecologist. Without any hesitation , Dr. Rettenmaier made a suggestion of a female physician that he felt would good for my friend and her circumstances. I thanked him and was genuinely surprised how generous and kind he was. I immediately contacted by distraught friend who at her age with a serious diagnosis was feeling scared and lost. With the information given by Dr. Rettenmaier, we were able to secure an appointment for my friend and feeling less anxious. Dr. Rettenmaier also followed up with me to check on my friend and offered any help he can give. I can't say I've ever met a physician quite like Dr. Rettenmaier. Although we haven't met, I feel like his patients are the luckiest patients amidst some grave medical news. They have a doctor that is compassionate and truly dedicated to caring for not only his patients but even to someone he has never met. Omg! I didn't even know doctors like Dr. Rettenmaier existed! I contacted his office online for an appointment and 10 min later I heard from him on my cell!! We spoke for at least 15-20 minutes where he inquired on my issue and provided detailed guidance on next steps. His office is under construction and so he's not seeing people officially but is making himself available to help those reaching out to him regardless! Seriously one of a kind doctor and so very genuine and helpful. Would recommend him to those looking for an amazing Gynecologic oncologist. Can't wait for his office to open! read more

I am so happy to see that Dr. Rettenmaier will be practicing again soon! I found it very hard to believe the allegations against him from the original reporting. He is absolutely one of the best Dr's I have ever seen in my 56 years and thankfully I have not needed an gynecologist oncologist since he successfully treated me several years ago. I have also been told by my regular Dr's since my vulvectomy from Dr. Rettenmaier what a great job he did. This is from Dr's in the south bay where I have since relocated and don't even know what Dr. performed my surgery. Dr. Mark Rettenmaier is the best of the best. He saved my life in 2008. For over 20 years I was in excruating abdomen pain & NO other Doctor could figure it out. Insted, they ALL just kept prescribing me pills for this & that and saying that I had to learn how to "manage my pain". Then finally, I ened up in Hoag (emergency) where they did a complete work-up, test after test. End result.. I needed immediate services of an OBGYN Oncologist. This is when I met Dr. Rettenmaier. And, in just a FIVE MINUTE EXAM, and after so many years of crippling pain and countles Drs & Specialists I met with, it was Dr. Rettenmaier who diagnosed my exact problem & recommended an emergency 4-hour long surgery. That was done right away, and after a long stay in Hoag Hospital afterwards, I have NEVER had even 1 day of abdomen pain since then. My review on Dr. Rettenmaier is long overdue. Without a doubt, in '97, he saved my life. I was diagnosed with an advanced stage of cervical cancer. In short, Dr. Rettenmaier performed the surgery, and I was completely healed. When i was referred to him (and just the mention of his name to other doctors), he was well known by his peers as a prominent and highly skilled surgeon. Thinking back, I remember him as being genuinely kind and warm; thorough and honest; and his medical facility was so clean (yeah, i don't forget stuff like that LOL). He put me at ease through the entire procedure from pre to post. I will never forget what he did for me. He was definitely a stand out. I was extremely disappointed in the care my mother received from Dr. Rettenmaier. When he met with me after surgery to deliver the bad news that he was not able to remove her cancer he did so with very little compassion. He saw my mother one additional time which was when he deemed it time to remove her staples. We questioned whether the wound would hold, even his assistant questioned if the wound would hold. His response was we can steri-strip it closed if necessary. The assistant proceeded but was shaking her head the entire time. When the wound started to open he did in fact use steri-strips to try to hold her together. Given how much ascites her abdomen contained, the strips didn't hold long. We had to rush my mother to the emergency room and then after she was admitted to the hospital Dr. Rettenmaier never came to see her. It wasn't until the next day that another doctor from the practice showed up to order wound care. My mother passed 3 weeks later. Her cancer was significant enough that she would've passed no matter what transpired but perhaps it would've been easier if she wasn't also dealing with a wound vac. read more
